Some people don't seem to be getting the point. This ending doesn't say we should live like cavemen. It doesn't say we are all luddites. It's not saying that augmentations should be abolished. It's merely saying that in the technology race, we must not sacrifice the things that makes us more than just any other animal. Because blind hunt for personal evolution is what every other animal does. We are the one species with the intelligence to second guess ourselves and reflect on our nature. Darrow used the technology embraced by so many to prove the dangers. It's a cautionary ending that urges us to think before we act, to value more things than just technological advancements. That's why there were so many clips of happy children and wartime soldiers in this ending. It's symbolic if human value and the misuse of power. I thought that much was obvious. We should use our human intelligence to think twice and act wise.

I stopped reading when you said "We are the one species with the intelligence to second guess ourselves and reflect on our nature"... Looks like you know nothing about nature, let me remind you that trees are more intelligent than humans, they were here the first, using their intelligence they avoid all the big exterminations that earth has seen. Humans can't survive any big extermination, cause they are less intelligent, quite simple. If we represent the period between the first day of earth and today as 24 hours, the humans appeared at 23:58:50! so we have been on earth for just one minute and 10 secs, which is nothing.

It's also a nice warning on what kind of power technology (especially modern) can give to evil men. Madmen of the past would *kill* to have the kind of control over people technology could enable. What mad despot(s) who believes his vision superior to others wouldn't want you completely dependent on him in all capacities of your life? A glance at the implication of digital currencies with the removal of paper cash is an excellent example of this.

I actually kind of see it the opposite way. What make us more than animals is that we are about more than self-perpetuation. It's the people who criticize others for "rejecting their own humanity" who are the "animals", because they want self-perpetuation rather than transcendence. Its the ability to acknowledge there could be something better than being human that makes us more than animals.

If anything, this ending proves that progression should never come before safety. Darrow saw just how wrong this kind of power and technology was destroying everything he had tried to protect and build up, even if his reaction to such a revelation wasn't at all ethical or justified.

I remember growing up and playing outside with all the kids. Nowadays, from home all the way to work; through at least two neighborhoods I don't see ONE kid outside, even in the summer. Speaking of Facebook/twitter-- Literally everything electronic is being taken over by the internet now. It's like we're being herded into a digital universe. I could be overreacting, but I just feel like the more we get into this stuff, the more individuality we hand over to a machine.

I picked this ending without even hesitating. The main reason was that after all bastards like bob page were still out there and augmentation would be a menace with them around: might as well start from scratch. I was driving out in the country side once, and came across an old, OLD gas pump that was no longer in use. So old, that when I looked at it, I actually had no idea how I would operate it. Technology is becoming so easy to use, doing all the little things for us, that we forget how to do things ourselves. How long until the technology we build becomes what we completely rely on to survive? It's just something to think about.

But we may also want to look into ways to diversify our basic net protocols, because much like how a retrovirus works by highjacking the cells process of reverse transcriptase to duplicate itself, some cyber threats may be specific to the function standard protocols... such as DDoS. This is the flipside of bioengineering. It's not just our creating new organisms, but understanding ecosystems and how those organisms interact that we can model and improve the stability of our own systems.

I chose this ending not because augmentation should be completely disappeared from the history, but rather it must be regulated and treated with extreme cautions. The technology once developed never dies off and history proves that. Hugh dialogues will remind people what sorts of toys people are playing with and make them think twice about receiving augmentations. Having said that, Sariff Ending is my second best ending because the other options are plain stupid. Handing over the power to control billions of people into the very small yet the influential group among the world? Well you can see how this shit is going to be dark from get go if you understand how easily men get corrupted. Destroying all evidence from the world so that people can choose their own destiny? This doesn't solve anything, at all. Illuminati lives on and their attempts to enslave augmented people as well. Many augmented addicts will suffer and die as the cure(your gene sample) is gone. The worst ending ever.

Einstein's quote reminds me of Martin Luther King saying that "Our technological power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men." With respect to the gametrailer's words, Deus Ex could well rephrase that to "Man, your body (be it of knowledge, technology, or your actual physics) may develop ever faster. But your mind may have lost pace at one point."

It's hard to parse but what Jensen is saying in this ending is actually quite simple: "The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The continued development of technology will worsen the situation. It will certainly subject human beings to greater indignities and inflict greater damage on the natural world, it will probably lead to greater social disruption and psychological suffering, and it may lead to increased physical suffering even in “advanced” countries. The industrial-technological system may survive or it may break down. If it survives, it MAY eventually achieve a low level of physical and psychological suffering, but only after passing through a long and very painful period of adjustment and only at the cost of permanently reducing human beings and many other living organisms to engineered products and mere cogs in the social machine. Furthermore, if the system survives, the consequences will be inevitable: There is no way of reforming or modifying the system so as to prevent it from depriving people of dignity and autonomy. If the system breaks down the consequences will still be very painful. But the bigger the system grows the more disastrous the results of its breakdown will be, so if it is to break down it had best break down sooner rather than later. We therefore advocate a revolution against the industrial system. This revolution may or may not make use of violence; it may be sudden or it may be a relatively gradual process spanning a few decades. We can’t predict any of that. But we do outline in a very general way the measures that those who hate the industrial system should take in order to prepare the way for a revolution against that form of society. This is not to be a POLITICAL revolution. Its object will be to overthrow not governments but the economic and technological basis of the present society."

I think the right thing to do would be to learn how to use technology properly and not to overdo it and abuse it. If you take away one if mankinds toys it will find another one and do the same all over again without learning from mistakes. I think the right thing to do would be to stick together and figure out together how to use it properly and make the right choice so mankind can learn from its mistakes.

Just because there have been major incidents, and major rallies against the technology as a whole doesn't mean that we, as people, have given up all electronics, or the power to harness electricity. At most, even cataclysmic events like Chernobyl have only slowed the progress of that specific technology.

The more and more we rely on technological progress, the more we become fused with it. Almost every aspect of your life is on a database somewhere now. The most valuable things to you no longer just apply to your physical life, but your digital life, too. At a moment's notice, you can become subject to complete and utter dominance by anyone with the technology to do so, and they don't even need a gun or to even see you. We are becoming too reliant on devices that can be used against us.

The issue is, ultimately, extinction isn't it? Whether we trudge on half-realized until some disaster or disease wipes us out, or whether we embrace evolution as a tool and turn it inward to expand into a new form which will usher in a new paradigm the likes of which haven't been seen since the Cambrian. I say we roll the dice and take the only option available to us that allows us a chance of long-term survival. If we fail, better to burn out in a blaze of glory, then to fade away in atrophy.

Oh, and about vulnerabilities. Yes, we open ourselves up to systemic risk, but the effects can be minimized by taking preventative measures. Redundancy and diversification in software platforms, for example... much in the way nature minimizes the effects of mass extinction via adaptive populations and speciation. A heavy cyber attack may be able to cripple a Microsoft server, but the same vulnerability may not be present in Cisco servers, one that targets Windows PCs won't affect iPhones, etc.

who says we have to chose? What part of our moral compass is tied to our biological forms? If we can not trust what we create, then how can we even trust our selves? What makes us human, beyond what we are physically is our compassion our willingness to move above what we are and strive to be something better. If care is taken and cooler head prevail, then the ascension to singularity wont mean abandoning morality. But if we start thinking in absolutes now then we have already chosen a path.

The entire game you work, as Jensen, to uncover the layers of manipulation that shape the world, and to expose those that have brought so much suffering to it under pretense of righteousness, greater knowledge, and authority. All you destroy with Panchaea are those few that know the truth, leaving the invisible forces in place, their authority unchallenged.

The problem is that the tech companies want to take everything they invent as progression. On the other hand, the technology connected to the Internet is vulnerable and will remain so, and if important things are entrusted to it, those important things can be destroyed in a cyber war, and in peace they can be used for espionage. In the world of Deus Ex, people are connected to vulnerable technology, this does not make them "gods", but vulnerable for hackers and the government, who could paralyze them with the push of a button.

But it's worth noting that in the larger perspective, we are merely returning to the "small village" settings of our ancestors for the vast majority of our history... where everybody in the tribe knew the business of everybody else... and gossip or disclosure could ostracize you or get you banished. Lots of people hate small towns because of that, and I understand why.

@asaqe3 Man, in first Deus Ex there were references to some sayings of particular person on each endings. This should have been shown at this ending :D

All great feats, but they only reduce the chances of hacking, they do not prevent them completely. As possible as it is to create it, it is possible to hijack and control it. The more of your own personal information to expose to databases, the higher your risk of having your entire life digitally destroyed, without having any idea who did it, or how to find who did it. Imagine such a thing happening to our entire society.

@alienbishop wouldn't he die? i thought it was a robocop mission, they 'auged' him up to save his life... or did they just screw him over and decided to just take advantage

@PorscheLover87 This was, in my opinion, the only option. Sarif would have created monsters, Taggart would have borne slaves and killing everyone, including yourself, didn't solve a damn thing - it just delayed the inevitable need to find a way to work things out.

@adam100115 I did, and let me explain why. Technological progress is the absolute only hope humanity has to eliminate the problems facing us. We can't just will the problems away, we can't rely on the good will of a few individuals to do it, we need to come together and develop new means of interacting with the world, and the universe, around us. Sure, I wouldn't like to see all the power in corporate hands, but at least there it can one day be claimed by the people.

I can see your reasoning and I can see why you would not trust others to decide the path of evolution. I chose Sarif's ending because I believe that augs have the ability to give us the chance to uphold our best virtues. What makes us human isn't our biology alone, I believe what makes us human is our ability to think and choose. Even with augmentations we can think for ourselves. Conflicts are inevitable but what if we never had to feel weak again, if we never have to worry for our future?

This is a different argument entirely, but it is highly irrational, yes, to believe that human beings have some intrinsic mental sense of morality. Morality is taught.

@JCLounon I don't exactly know where you came up with that response. I wasn't arguing against nuclear technology, just referencing it as a parallel. Personally I support nuclear technology. But if I didn't, Chernobyl is a good example of nuclear technology's worst case scenario. If you don't believe me maybe you should ask a Belarusian... That being said, the Chernobyl disaster was completely avoidable, and mostly caused by the errors and ignorance of a few select workers.

This ending is non-canon. In Deus Ex, there is still augmentation, and Nano-Augmentation, even.

@liquidpersuasion IMO Darrow's ending is the best, but technological progress should not be hamstrung by irrational fear, which I think is what Darrow's trying to provoke. This ending reminded me about the MMR Vaccine controversy where parents refused to give their children the Measles vaccine because of irrational (and now disproved) fears of Autism risks. During that time Measles and Mumps returned with a vengeance.

@Sarcasmses Anarchists do believe that will create a better world, but who knows? Certainly not you and I. Although the message is simplified it is still reasonable and relevant to modern day. And @lingocode, it isn't has no "luddite" connotations at all; Jensen only portrays it as such in his speech. Personally, I thought about it more as valuing the freedom of choice and letting humanity as a whole decide where to take this technology and what to make of this incident

@liquidpersuasion I find hugh darrow's ending the best, sarif i like it because i often think about we going to the top with technology acting like gods but if you see the world as a whole we should not exist, we are a cancer. I dont want sarif's ending (because even if it is the canon) Is like the guy said "ambitious" Hugh darrow's is like a combination of every ending, self destruct ending is pretty cool for a movie not for my choice, if a movie had that ending i would be like :O wow shit...

Every video has some good points, the three of them should be welded together to form a better decision. I picked that one for regulations, people shouldn't cut off limbs and remove other stuff and replace it with metal parts.

For those who created these devices, yes. But the long-term affects can be damaging to the people they create things for. There are many old-world machines that you and I will not even understand, because machines do all of that for us. And so much of our personal information is saved to a database somewhere, which could leave us at the mercy of anyone with powerful data connections. A single hack of our infrastructure (which relies more and more on computers) could devastate all of society.
