MGS2/3 is still a great example of just everything good with games. It has long cinematic cutscenes, but they are all skippable getting you right back to gameplay The graphics are stylized yet still impressive for its time which also allowed it to run better than most and hold up over the years better than most Tons of interesting in depth mechanics with the environment. We need more games to look at these for inspiration
@Lord_of_Dread Жыл бұрын
I don't think the graphics need to be stylised; Kojima was trying to make it as realistic as possible with the hardware that was available at the time. But there was an art direction, including colour grading, that was ingrained it its visual identity. I think we can have near photorealism while still having less "realistic" tweaks for visual flare, just as they do in cinema, which is what Kojima gets a lot of inspiration from anyway.

I don't believe it's wise to induce a sepia tone, but rather to grade color in a cinematic temperature, so that when tendered in warm color space it will be pitch perfect rather than overly yellowed by compounding the warm / yellow aspects of both the game and the display. What would be wise, for the sake of placating people, would be to offer a very good suite of optional filters the way Bluepoint does in Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls.

The aim should not be to be as realistic as possible. Even films have art directors and colorists. Stanley Kubrick once said: “You’re not trying to capture reality. You’re trying to capture a photograph of reality.” A solution would be to look at what Kojima did with MGS5’s environments and models.

I wouldn't say that MGSV looks stylized at all, he has always tried to push graphics to their limits, I think when people say PS2 games look stylized, it's really the technical limitations of the time. When I think stylized PS2 games I think Mark of Kri and Jak + Daxter etc. I don't think Kojima ever meant for MGS2/ 3 to be stylized, but within the confines of the PS2 nothing could look exactly photo real with texture, polygon, lighting limitations. Honestly I would say MGS2 Tanker opening is one of the most photoreal things on PS2.

I think MGS3 is inspired by 60s/70s bond/spy movies so that's that color grading your seeing! and it seems to be missing that original inspiration. Also the animations seem to be just modified MGSV animations. I'm worried they are gonna keep the level layouts the same which would ruin the pace of the game considering the game play seems very different and modern like MGSV. After the recent Master Collection I have low expectations for this remake. You cant just remake the game play and graphics and expect it to be a beloved remake... look at the RE4/RE2 remakes they have the spirit of the original but are very different level design based on the updated game play.

I love MGS3 and I'm more than happy for the remake to get rid of the colour filter. Obviously the aim with the original one was to go with this cold war era camera colouring, but I don't miss all the brown/yellow colour filters from the late PS2 and early PS3 era. On a CRT it's also not as jarring as it is on a modern HRD 2k/4k monitor/TV. AC Mirage has the AC1 colour filter and the colour grading worked nicely for AC1, but for a modern game with the much more detailed textures it just doesn't work as well. Especially not if you play it first without the filter and see how colourful the game is. I'm happy for remakes to go their own way in presentation.
@Marko-ij4vy Жыл бұрын
Yeah I hated those color filters. Imo mgs2 aged the best when it comes to older mgs games because it actually looked like it had normal colors. @cidiracing7481 Жыл бұрын
@@Marko-ij4vy Well MGS2 also had some choices that didn't age that well. Like that slowmo/motion blur effect on the tanker section. MGS4 had a very desaturated colour grading yeah. Not the biggest fan of that colour grading. I still prefer the presentation from MGS1 that was mostly neutral colour grading outside of select sections like the Psycho Mantis one that hsd a heavy green colour grading. The rest was environmentally very fitting like the more blue for the freezer section or the redish one for the smelting section. Obviously textures, models, etc. all aged poorly since it was on PS1 and that horrible texture warping from PS1. I do hope they remake that game. The section of MGS4 whwre you are back on the island are amazing. Generally a lot of collur grading artistic choices don't hold up well over time. Unlike artistic choices like cell shading for games like Borderlands or Silent Hill using the fog because the console couldn't render far into the distance, so they put the fog there to hid the pop in.

Limitations and quirks of the specific tech used in games has always impacted the art style of those games in one way or another. I think we're transitioning away from that in AAA games, where now art style is going to be differentiated less based on the tech that's used, and more on the creative art direction of the designers. Not so different than movies. Every live-action movie is shot using the same lighting and physics system that earth provides, but different cinematographers, directors, and editors still manage to make their films look unique based on their creative direction.

I can imagine the original MGS3 as part of its development has an immense "style guide", like a rulebook of how things look, what do enemies look like, gadgets, vehicles, camo, buildings, vegetation, characters, basically everything to build the visual identity of the game, but when you're remaking something you already have something to work from... you're basically copying someone's homework, it is by its very nature a derivative work. In the case of something like RE4 remake it's clear they started from scratch using the original as the influence, but MGSD seems to just be a graphics update, the levels appear to be the same and it was confirmed they're reusing the dialogue, so we're reusing content and mixing it with freshly generated assets from a team that, no offense to them, are not the legendary developers of those original PS2 games, it's like a graphics mod people always complain that the modder is messing with the original feel of the game. Two examples of nailing the original feel, RE4HD, the devs went to extreme lengths to preserve the original visual style of the game, and Black Mesa, a total remake from scratch but insanely faithful to the source material and its sequels.

I reserve my right to change my mind when we see more faces and see they're obviously mocapping real humans rather than basing it on Yoji Shinkawa designs though, lol. It's probably gonna be like the difference between Devil May cry 3, which very accurately captured Daigo Ikeno's concept art, and Devil May Cry 5, where it very obviously doesn't and is just modeled on real people. Not to throw any shade on the models they captured or anything. There's just a difference between doing characters based on artwork and characters based on face scanning or whatever they're doing. You can already see that issue if you look at the Pachinko version of mgs3 - it's not just color stuff, it's the style of the characters.

And it feels it's gonna be exactly the same game but running on a prettier engine. It feels like it's stuck to the past if you compare it to the Resident Evil remakes by Capcom for example, which were made from the ground up based off the previous games, we knew the areas, we knew the boss fights, we knew the plot, but Capcom added so much more, new interactions, new character traits, new puzzles even, and new gameplay that improved on the old fixed-camera gameplay. Instead, this MGS remake seems like a budget project, made to cash-in on the franchise popularity by exploiting a small studio that wanna get their name out there by doing cool crap.

Still waiting how the facial expressions and lip sync will look like. I have a bad feeling they will look stiff/soulless.
@N.i.E.M.O Жыл бұрын
Will probably be the same as they were on PS2, which was serviceable back then but would just be atrocious-looking by today's standards. Hopefully they at are at least on part with MGSV, but I'm not holding my breathe. What we've seen so far of gameplay indicates that's they're still reusing most (or all) of the original stiff PS2-era animations (with a few from the 3DS update thrown in there, like the crouch-walking animation).
@Marko-ij4vy Жыл бұрын
@@N.i.E.M.O It actually looks like the walk/crouch/crawl animation is taken from mgs5 because the transition between them looks much smoother compare to original.

Knowing how lazy Konami is, they probably just took the same game and slapped new graphics on it.

Konami can never win with this remake. If they change to much people will complain and if they don’t change enough people will complain. These guys are upset it doesn’t feel like the look of the original mgs3 yet if it did have that they’d complain to Konami for not putting enough effort in.

People go on about graphics way too much. The game will mostly look great, I'm sure of it. The more important thing is, can they make it an actual remake liek RE2, RE4 or even Shadow of the Colossus as examples of great remakes which kept the spirit of the original games while improving to modern standards for certain aspects, especially in terms of control for RE2.

Better than Activision-Blizzard replacing memorable scripted story gameplay missions in CoD MW3 with dull sandbox Warzone segments. They had the nerve to insert dialogue lines from the principal voice cast to create the illusion that you were playing a single player campaign when you were actually playing a solo DMZ match without other human teammates.

After reading a lot of praise about the "UE5 gameplay" in the comments under various videos showing it on YT I was afraid I was the only one that felt it looked weird and ultimately bad, like a super early prototype or an ultra low cost fan made animation. I'm glad I'm not the only one and that I am right and "they" are wrong. :) It just looks super simple and basic in the bad way. I hope the final game won't look like this.

I would've just wanted MGS3 "remade" using the FoxEngine. UE just doesn't cut it, especially for a Metal Gear game. imo

When a "Pseudo-Historical Recreation" of an original Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear game like this Delta looks generic, lacking of any artistic vision and with manually adjusted/not motion recaptured movements just as any other fan made remakes made using the very same Unreal Engine 5 you know exactly how already doomed from the start this project actually is.

@@vegaswithdrawal4132 I just need games to focus on the little things and pay attention to all the small details for the larger experience. If these guys want to make a game, remake a game or whatever, they need to be actual fans of the game and respect the lore and nuances of the world. We get games today where if you shot a bottle in the game world the bullets do nothing to the bottle, stuff like that is just unacceptable. Games where u point a weapon in a npc face and they dont react like little things that kill immersion. This game the lighting and color palette just completely off, snakes character looking off. We are paying 70 bucks for games now these companies need to tighten up. Im sorry🤷♂️

I think the strange tech demo looking graphics is just a symptom of updating old games to a more realistic style. I thought the exact same thing about the Final Fantasy 7 remake the first time I saw it, but now that I'm used to it it looks normal to me and correct.
@willuigi64 Жыл бұрын
I feel the delta (hehe) between OG FFVII, and the extended FFVII media (Advent Children, Crisis Core, Etc) is a lot greater because of the original's use of mixed styles vs the standardized artwork proceeding it. As opposed to MGS 3 > Delta's changes which essentially boils down to putting the pachinko assets into ue5 (massively downplaying the work put into Delta but you get my point I hope).
