Diao Sha, a simple technique for removing excess dampness, coldness and toxins from the body. It is also a good way to check if you have blockages on some specific meridians and help you to remove those blockages. It is one of the many techniques that Master Cheung share on the Tai Chi and Qigong for Health Series taichi18.com/online-video-cou...

Amazing! After feeling too reliant on TCM practitioners who seem to intentionally make you reliant on them if you have serious health issues, this has made me feel much more in control of my recovery. Can't thank you enough!

Many people asked about whether this help damp heat. Unfortunately it only helps a bit, because damp heat mostly stay internal and affect your digestion. There are many effective herbal formulas for treating this, just consult a T.C.M. doctor. Btw, beside the inner elbows, knees and shoulders, you can also hit your armpits and inner thighs (beside your groin). According to Yellow Emperor Inner Classic (Huangdi Neijing): bad energy of lungs & heart tend to stagnate at inner elbows; bad energy of liver tend to stagnate at armpits; bad energy of spleen tend to stagnate at inner thighs (beside your groin); bad energy of kidneys tend to stagnate at the back of knees. Doing the diao sha in these areas, will help to release them. 歧伯曰:肺心有邪,其气留于两肘;肝有邪,其气流于两腋;脾有邪,其气留于两髀;肾有邪,其气留于两腘。- 黄帝内经,灵枢,邪客篇 Diao Sha is one of the many techniques that I share on the Tai Chi and Qigong for Health Series taichi18.com/online-video-course/#for-health This practice may not be suitable for those who have problem veins, like varicose veins. If you insist on doing it, then do not hit yourself too hard.

I’m doing this for the first time today (all of the areas he mentioned in the video, as well as the areas he mentioned somewhere here in the comments section). A couple tips/ pointers, and speculations… A tip: I have an adjustable barstool I lowered to its minimum height, so it’s just a few inches higher than my bed. I sat on the barstool with my ankles resting on the bed, legs straight, sitting about two feet away from the bed (adjust according to your comfort and leg length). This makes the behind the knees, and the side of the knees exercise easy, so you’re not bending forward and using an awkward momentum to perform the exercise. You just swing your arms with ease. I pushed my barstool a little further away for the around the knees exercise, and placed the arch of my foot against the edge of my bed, bending the knee slightly while keeping it in a pretty relaxed position. For the armpit one, I put an earplug in for the corresponding armpit I was working on, since it’s in such close range to the ear, and I’m getting a loud clap out of it. I didn’t find much doing a quick internet search on the mechanisms behind Diao Sha. I just posted my question on here, and am hoping for clarification on this. I’m speculating that it’s supposed to bring toxins up to the surface. From there, the old blood or toxins within it, somehow enter the lymphatic system for drainage. This technique also encourages the repair of the now damaged blood vessels to make stronger ones, and increases oxygenation in the blood. It’s also waking up/ stimulating major junctions in the lymphatic system. I just copied and pasted my questions, and turned them into statements, so that’s why it might sound like I’m giving advice, but I’m only making educated guesses, also based off of what I’ve heard on cupping and Gua Sha years ago (so I’m probably missing information on it). I couldn’t even tolerate more than 1.5 minutes on my left arm (inner elbow), and my left side is more sensitive and more bruised on each of the areas. I know I have more stagnation on the left side - this might have to do with the majority of the lymphatic system sitting in the left side, as I’ve heard from an expert on the lymphatic system. The lipoma I had removed on my left side (behind my shoulder) further indicates this for my case. About twelve years ago, I laid in a floatation tank, and my left arm and leg folded/ bent on their own, while the right remained straight. Another tip: do what you can tolerate. Someone said she heard someone else say do 30 repetitions on each side. Do what you can to the point of your intuition telling you you’re done. I know for sure I’m more stagnated/ cold/ damp after the lockdowns/ circumstances endured during the P. Everyone’s situation is/ has been different, and my experience was pretty difficult with lots of stagnation (differing perspectives with people I live with, big life changes, etc.). Work your way up gradually until you get to the 3-5 minute range. It’s more about number of repetitions, proper technique/ force applied, and a consistent pacing/ deliberation behind it, than total time. The pace he’s performing it at seems pretty ideal, like 1 per second or 2 in the inner elbow & back of shoulders/ trapezius. I get a much faster pace working behind & around the knees - (I also noticed a definite flush of warming sensation doing the sides of my knees, probably because I got so many deliberate reps in). Do it firmly and with consistent force, but not to the point of torture, obviously. Your intuition should tell you what the right amount of force will be. How do you know when you’ve done enough repetitions? You’ll probably know better the more you do it, but you want to do enough that you get the bruises, or at least the healthy indication of the red dots. If you’re only getting red dots in the first minute or so, do more to see if you start getting purplish or bluish bruising, as long as the pain is more superficial and momentary, and tolerable. Plus, the more repetitions you perform, the more the pain will eventually be tolerable, especially if you lighten up at times when it starts to get more painful. If you feel heat move into the area, that probably is also an excellent indication you did a good job with that area. I probably got even more bruising today because I’m just getting my period/ menstruation, and I’m just understanding I have electrolyte/ mineral deficiencies, so that causes heavier bruising, as well as different PMS symptoms like fatigue. Drinking hot teas before and after, will probably help assist the process, teas like dandelion to help assist in flushing out lymph, and astragalus to help with the spleen. Walking/ lightly jogging and possibly rebounding (lightly jumping on a trampoline), or doing jumping jacks or jump rope (or jumping on your bed), or dancing samba in place a jiggling your whole body with feet firmly planted (I know it sounds weird, but it’s actually a lot of fun 😁) will probably also help with lymphatic drainage. Some methods better than others on your joints. I noticed some slight “pain”, more like feeling the congestion around the sides of my knees while walking. Walking and bending/ stretching around these areas should probably help free the junctions up. I also noticed my digestive system doing things and making noises while doing these techniques, and had to pee a bit and got just a bit of drainage out of my nose. It’s probably quite beneficial to gently do percussion therapy all over your body to help facilitate the lymphatic drainage, since the lymphatic system is located throughout the body. You can always look up diagrams to see where they’re located. No particular order (like in the direction toward the heart - experts have said this is a fallacy and explained why, but I’m not remembering why at the moment). Anything you can do to assist in your body’s metabolism and speeding up the process of lymphatic drainage and detoxification and repairing the body will probably help clear the bruises faster, thus you healing more efficiently…using proper discernment of course. This is a tool (a necessary one), not the root solution. Seems like what’s closer to the root of the solution is moving the Chi in your digestive system through heating it and drying it via direct heat in the form of foods and beverages, with sun, exercise (subtle energy practices, as well as more gross forms of exercise - cardio, muscular, movement, flexibility), probably dry sauna, maybe herbs, lymphatic stimulation (exercise and Diao Sha seems like they’d address this), and probably assistance with placing a heating pad or one if those hot rubber enema bags over your digestive organs, probably your back too…and I almost forgot, Bikram Yoga or another form of hot Yoga would likely benefit significantly…something I currently can’t practice sadly (complicated situation as to why, but if anyone knows about it, it’s having to do with Kundalini coming through during my practice). Self massage of these organs, and if you’re able to get lymphatic massage (deep tissue & myofascial probably would help a lot too if you have the means, acupressure and acupuncture…many, many resources available as long as you have the means, which is not always easy, but there’s so much you can do for yourself for free. Plus, an incredible benefit to doing self-treatment is, as you practice, you know what amount of pressure/ pace/ technique will work best for you. My sister did a percussion therapy treatment about six years ago, where a practitioner hit her with bamboo sticks, and she said it was really painful. You know your threshold since you are applying the technique, as well as simultaneously receiving it. If anything else comes up, I’ll add in edits. Who knows, this technique may or may not work. All you can do is experiment for yourself. I know we always hit many different angles when we can when we go on a healing journey, but from what information and educated guesses I’ve gathered thus far, it sounds like a very viable outlet of healing. Yeah, I’m pretty excited about this and passionate about healing and bringing as close to optimal health as possible. I’ve been self-diagnosing on different symptoms I’ve been experiencing, and am experimenting and acting as my own doctor, with the help of people on the internet and people I know, since I never was a fan of routine use of allopathic medicine, and financial means isn’t always so attainable….plus, it’s the highest form of knowledge when you learn through personal experience and application yourself - you can then help others heal with your personally acquired knowledge, and one of the main things I’m here for in this existence is to heal, gain knowledge, and expand (and party 😁🎉) and help others to facilitate their own process. I believe we’re all here to experience a much fuller experience of life. Some of us just need to be shaken out of the cold/ damp and wake up to it.

Thanks for sharing. Some questions: do I have to restrict one session to one body-part, or can I safely do a longer session, where I for example treat the inner elbows left -right and the back of the knees , so 3 m + 3m + 3 m, which results in a session of 9 min ? Is treating only both elbows as effective as treating a combination with other body-parts ? Can i,after treatment, do a qigong-form (eg shibashi 1) or do I have to wait some time between them ? Are there any body-conditions that would make it advisable not to perform Diao Sha ? Thanks for your answers.

If you can tolerate the 3-5 minute range, do it. If you can’t, do what you can tolerate, whether 10 repetitions, 50 repetitions, etc. I was surprised that I couldn’t tolerate more than 1.5 minutes on my left arm (which was worse than my right), and probably because I’m just getting my period/ menstruation. Makes sense because I know I have more stagnation on the left (I believe somehow related to the lymphatic system, as the majority of it, I heard, is on the left side of the body. I know things went downhill for me because of the lockdowns and circumstances around the P these past couple years. Like he said, improvements should occur over time as you consistently work on it. Work your way up to going the 3-5 minutes over time. I believe the goal is to do it enough so you get an indication via bruising, or the red dots (indicating health), but obviously not torturing yourself to get them. Use your intuition and do it firmly enough, but not to the point of inflicting excessive pain.

Hi Master Cheung, I was looking online to find out some more information on Diao Sha, and didn’t find much on it. What are the specific mechanisms behind Diao Sha? I’m speculating that it’s supposed to bring toxins up to the surface. From there, does the old blood or toxins within it, somehow enter the lymphatic system for drainage? Does it encourage the repair of the damaged blood vessels to make stronger ones, and increase oxygenation in the blood? Is this also waking up or stimulating major junctions in the lymphatic system? If these are true (or not), what else is supposed to be behind the success of Diao Sha? I imagine that this method is only one part of a series of methods that are necessary to clear cold/ damp in the body, a large part being bringing more heat & dryness to the digestive system through food, drink, and maybe herbs…that this is more of a supplementary (but necessary) protocol to bringing more Chi directly into the digestive system with heat and dryness. I also was wondering when the soonest was that we could use a dry sauna after Diao Sha. I know you said no shower or bath for at least 6 hours after. Is 6 hours enough to wait to use the sauna, or do we have to wait until the next day, or longer? Or is this different that we can do it right after Diao Sha, as long as we wait to take a shower for at least 6 hours…since nothing foreign is entering your pores in using the sauna (like chemicals could from shower or bath water), and you’re mainly excreting sweat through the pores? If you see this, and are able to answer, thank you in advance. And thank you for posting this video. 🙏🏽

i have seen your post and saw your post. Don t do sauna directly after Dao Sha, because to much heat and driness could enter your body. Be also aware of balancing the diet, too much dry herbs and foods could damage the yin in your body. Yin and Yang has to be balanced very carefully.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom. I tried this for the first time just now. My health is not very good generally. I have a lot of bruising along the crease of the inside of my elbow. Is this just because my health is so poor? Or do you think I might be hitting a bit too hard? I tried to copy your intensity on the video.

+Josh Pickles If you touch the bruise and it hurt, you hit it too hard. If it does not hurt, then it is just junky stuff surfacing. Nothing to do with Chi Kung. This is a popular method used by villager. It is same as cupping practice by European.

@kai2698

If you haven't done any regular detox programs (diet, exercise, lymph drainage etc), and you do this 吊痧 (Diao Sha) technique, you will detox. So it might not be the best thing while you're breastfeeding.

@quantumchang4410
@quantumchang4410 8 жыл бұрын
midwestcreative What part of the translation are you referring to? Please also note that most of Chinese medicine terminology is still not understood by Western medicine and so there is no direct translation into Western medical terms. Western medicine is still very much in the dark ages about curing chronic diseases or how diseases originate. Therefore the word "cure" to Western doctors has become somewhat a taboo word to them. They'll just laugh at you to make you feel stupid if you ever mention the word "cure".
@midwestcreative
@midwestcreative 8 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for responding. I wasn't referring to the Western medicine equivalent words. I just mean the translation to the western alphabet as opposed to the chinese characters, in reference to the slapping technique. Now as I realized from another comment, I'm just dense and it's in the title as "Diao Sha", however... I can't find any reference at all to "Diao Sha" and the closest I can find is a technique called "Pai Da". In short, I just would like to learn more about this technique and don't know where to start.
