In the early 2000's I discovered two things at a small festival in Indiana. Beer Butter Chicken not to be confused with beer can chicken and the Grass Roots with Rob Grill. My cousin had a Grass Roots album around 1972 when I was 12 but I didn't know much about them. I, along with several other people spent well over an hour talking and listening to Rob talk. Yes. He could talk. Hard to believe when he told us that when he first joined the band he was just the bass player and they wouldn't let him sing. He would be in the back or up front with no microphone. Dennis and Warren were the singers. It wasn't until they had a song that pf Sloane wrote that nobody could get it right that he was off to the side trying to get his bass part right that Warren heard him and told him that he should be the one singing it. I could have listened to him all day.

Wow, I never knew any of that. I wish there was a biography of the Grassroots. I only know Rob Grill liked to go fishing with his buddy, Cory Wells.

RIP Rob Grill. This was a great band with a huge number of hits. The Grassroots made their debut on ABC/Dunhill. They tried to capture the magic of their time in Hitsville and MCA tried to help them, but it was over. Sometimes great band just run out of steam and/or the music scene changes so much as it did when Disco came out.

Go to another KZbin clip where two of the original band members were on The Dating Game.

It should be noted that especially by 1982, none of the original Grass Roots members were still there. Bill Fulton was the original lead singer (he is heard on "Where Were You When I Needed You," originally done in 1966 and the one big hit the Grass Roots had without Rob Grill) and I believe all of the original members had left by the time the group took off. I believe that is why the band was, especially in later years known as The Grass Roots Starring Rob Grill.

You can hear Rob's lead vocal to that song on the "Let's Live For Today" album/LP.

Compiled a list of the best female singers already. Grill would certainly be at the top or close to the top when it comes time to list the best male singers.
