Robert Smith “sounds sad.” Yeah, that’s kind of his thing. It’s a beautiful love song. Listen to it again in 30 or 40 years and these simple lyrics will move you deeply. BTW, you’ve probably heard a Muzak version of this in an elevator or department store. Kind of funny as the Cure started out as an underground band, before becoming mega-stars. Many good song suggestions in the other comments

The Cure, along with Bauhaus and Joy Division, are very influential post-punk bands and all emerged in '78-'79 with incredibly innovative sounds. The Cure: 'A Forest' live 1981 Werchter Festival is a good introduction.

Their entire discography is all over the place. A notable comparison that most fans make is whereas “Disintegration” evokes a sense of sadness, “Pornography” from ‘82 is straight up anguish. That album and “ Seventeen Seconds” is pretty much where their sound took a dark turn. They did have quite a few pop hits but the majority of their catalog lyrically can be very deep and musically very diverse. My top 10: Charlotte Sometimes, A Night Like This, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, The Figurehead, Same Deep Water as You, Just One Kiss, Hot, Hot, Hot!!!, Fascination Street, To Wish Impossible Things, Lullaby. Take your pick. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. :)

Next to the Beatles the Cure are my next all time fave band... They musically do it all, heavy, pop, introspective, dark, sad, happy and also paint musical landscapes like no other band... Singer, songwriter, guitarist Robert Smith is one seriously talented man... 'Lovesong' I love but a terrible reflection of the Cures music, it's an oddity on the album (very poppy) the album is anything but... Songs for future consideration 'Pictures Of You', 'Lullaby', 'Juat Like Heaven'... From the album's 'Head On The Door' & 'Disintegration' every track is very nearly worthy but since their first 1978 to their most recent, I heard that a new album is in the pipeline, everyone of them has gems on it... I will repeat 'Lovesong ' was not the place to start with the Cure, if it was the first thing I heard I would not be tempted to explore further.... Good listening...

Ah, the dark side of the 80s/classic indie music. This is one of those bands you will cherish if you belong to those who like the aesthetics of finding beauty in sadness. The Cure are often truly sad up to depressing, occasionally even suicidal, but they have a canon of classic indie-goth tracks under their belly, and I can only encourage you to listen to some of their singles, if you have a feeling this could be your cup of tea. For a relatively easy start: "Boys Don't Cry", "Jumping Someone Elses Train" or "Close to Me", then "A Forest". "Friday I'm in Love" is one of their happiest and also truly great!

I first got into them when I saw a Hewlett Packard commercial that had 'Pictures of You' in it, give that song a listen please, it's one of their most popular. Because they are all 3 from much the same time period, this post reminds me of someone saying in a comment here under your Sweet Dreams post, that they preferred The Fixx to the Eurythmics. Just my two cents: I actually loved the Fixx back then, and had 2 of their albums. (But not loved more than the Eurythmics. Not still listening to them as often.) But if you do want to hear some, you could pull out your metaphorical shovel and examine lyrics for their song One Thing Leads to Another. The song before it, Saved by Zero, I never got the meaning of until the internet came along to hand me the intended meaning. For hearing One Thing Leads to Another, I would pass on the extended version, unless you are going to do a workout. Then it's perfect.

I could see where "Close to You" made you think that she was putting them on a pedestal...we all do that at the beginning of love. But you say you almost get the same vibe from this but more real. I think you've never been in true, deep love before, tbh. When you find someone you truly love, this is how they make you feel. It's not putting them on a pedestal, it's being in love. When you love someone, there are many ways they make you feel and often make you feel good about yourself and them. It just comes with the territory and is why people marry and hopefully stay married. No pedestals involved. You would do anything for them. And if you lose them, your world comes crumbling down...at least for a while. I lost my fiancé to a motorcycle accident 13 years ago. When he was alive I ran through every emotion, even some of the darker ones, but he completed me (as cliché as that sounds). When I lost him, I wanted to go after him. It took a lot of support and willpower to stick it out and give it a chance to heal. And even though I'm ok now, I'm still single and probably will remain so. In my heart, I'm married to that man, no matter where he has gone. That is what love can do to you. Or at least that's what it did to me. It's different for everyone, I suppose.

Daniel, I would recommend listening to Friday I'm In Love, it's a happy pop song and how many Cure songs can you really say that about. There is an acoustic, unplugged version that's on their Greatest Hits that's really good too. Actually there were 2 discs, one with with the original versions and a second with unplugged versions of all 18 songs. The album Disintegration(1989) is really good but kind of dark and depressing. When it was released people joked that if you were feeling kind of down not to listen to it on Mondays or when it was raining.
@nancyandrews398
@nancyandrews398 4 жыл бұрын
I always argue that "Friday" is the exact opposite of a happy song. It's a song about someone suffering from deep, crippling depression. The upbeat tone is a deliberate, almost acerbic, contrast to that. Consider the lyrics. I don't care if Monday's blue Tuesday's grey and Wednesday too Thursday, I don't care about you It's Friday, I'm in love Monday you can fall apart Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart Oh, Thursday doesn't even start It's Friday, I'm in love Saturday, wait And Sunday always comes too late But Friday, never hesitate I don't care if Monday's black Tuesday, Wednesday, heart attack Thursday, never looking back It's Friday, I'm in love Monday you can hold your head Tuesday, Wednesday, stay in bed Or Thursday watch the walls instead It's Friday, I'm in love Saturday, wait And Sunday always comes too late But Friday, never hesitate Dressed up to the eyes It's a wonderful surprise To see your shoes and your spirits rise Throw out your frown And just smile at the sound Sleek as a shriek, spinning 'round and 'round Always take a big bite It's such a gorgeous sight To see you eat in the middle of the night You can never get enough Enough of this stuff It's Friday, I'm in love I don't care if Monday's blue Tuesday's grey and Wednesday too Thursday, I don't care about you It's Friday, I'm in love Monday you can fall apart Tuesday, Wednesday, break my heart Thursday doesn't even start It's Friday, I'm in love Do-do, do-do, do-do, do Do-do, do-do, do-do, do (Oh, oh, whoa, whoa)

@@nancyandrews398 I can see why you'd feel that way about this song and I wouldn't try tell you that you're wrong. But to me it says that life is a grind and bad things happen. But after all the monotony of everyday life, if you're lucky enough to have somebody to care about then life is OK. Robert Smith told Spin Magazine that it is a dumb pop song, but it's quite excellent actually because it's so absurd, it's so out of character - very optimistic and really out there in happy land. It's nice to get that counterbalance. I would have to agree, it's a catchy and upbeat pop song that's not your typical Cure song.

Robert Smith is the pure example of melancholia. In each happy moment he sees a future nostalgia moment in germ. PS. This is absolutely not pop rock, it's more gothic new wave if you want to put it in a genre. They are quite idiosyncrasic.
