Hey Curl Friends, I realize this is a very sensitive topic and I don’t take it lightly. My purpose is not to discredit or drag anyone or organization but rather to share what has happened to my hair. It started with getting curly cuts and has progressed to my hair strands being compromised from what I believe is the lack of leave-ins & deep conditioning treatments etc. While following this particular hair care methodology by BGC, I began to notice some very unfavorable changes to my hair. The ends of my hair were not only split up like crazy (even with routine curly cuts by 2 CIK’s) but my hair also became very hard, rough and dry! At the end of the day the blame rest on my shoulders because no one forced me to implement those practices into my hair care routine. I made an adult decision to do so and now I’m dealing with the consequences of it all. If you feel your hair is thriving by utilizing these same practices, I still highly recommend you have your hair professionally assessed. Had I not taken the initiative to have mine assessed, I would have not known for quite some time what was really happening to my hair. Hopefully, it’s not too late and parts of my hair can still recover! Also, it’s honestly been very disheartening and frustrating to say the least because I feel like my and others concerns are being dismissed. Instead we’ve been blocked, poked fun of and drug through the mud for sharing what’s been happening. Either way, it’s up to me/us to make changes to fix the damage that has occurred. It’s just very upsetting to start over again and have others talk badly about you for speaking your truth. 😓 All I can say at this point is….Please please please check your hair friends! It’s better to be safe than sorry!!!! 💯 ~Shelly 💖

I am completely with you on this! 🤗 I have always side eyed the no deep conditioning, leave in, and hair/scalp oiling that has been around for 100’s of years. I like to listen to my hair in particular and have been natural for so long that I have seen phases come and go but those who have been around stick with these “basics”. I’m so happy you gave it a shot then decided what was best for you. I’m here for you sis!

I agree Shelly! And have followed you on IG for the last year. I had one curly cut in my life and knew. This ain’t good. I never used oils and butter on my hair. So that part of black girl curls was cool with me. And was happy to finally see people get on that wagon. Where they lost me was the No deep condition, and leave in. As well as no air drying. At least two to 3 times a month we air drying over here. Sometimes more than 3 times. Anyway lol! Y’all better take care of yalls heads the same way ya did when it was relaxed. And I have always trimmed my hair blown out. I know for me trying to make my hair go 5 and more days will create chaos for me. So I do my wash and go every two to three days.

Not her pulling the plug on thoroughly discussing this matter ON A PUBLIC LIVE...how convenient... That is absolutely ridiculous. As a professional, if I had recommended methods that caused my viewers and followers damage or unsatisfactory results, I feel so obligated and inclined to get to the bottom of it. I am very much disappointed in how they have navigated this. This really could've been nipped in the bud and been an opportunity to better serve their supporters and consumers. They pride themselves on being snarky and speaking out against methods that oppose their views, but when the shoe is on the other foot, they find any excuse to renege and avoid accountability. I simply cannot respect that as a fellow professional. Especially treating someone that way that respected, invested, and supported them and their brand. They owe at least that respect. Shelly, I really do apologize for you and the other ladies going thru this experience. Very few people know how much of a toll this takes to be in this position, but I believe that you Rosie and the other ladies are pioneering a movement where clients are taking their power back in this industry that has made women silent & docile to accept whatever happens to them in the salon chair. I thank you ladies for speaking out. This saga has taught me to be a more perceptive stylist and made me aware of how to better see and assess damage on textured hair. I used to believe that I could fully assess damage on natural hair in its natural state and through this process I've learned just how deceptive curls and coils can be. Being a cosmetology practitioner, means being open to learning and growing in your study. BGC may not have able to receive that lesson but I am not too proud to admit my shortcomings and grow from them. Though your situation was a rather negative one, you have brought about such positive change and awareness with this issue.

@shelly.v.247 you, Rosie and @AfrikanHairGod have helped me immensely through your awareness on this topic. I too have velcro ends and decided to get my hair blown out almost 5 yrs later to assess any damage and/or unevenness. Thankfully, there wasn't any hair jaggedness but I do need to remove about 2 in. off the ends as the rest of the hair is full & healthy. However, I wanted to see more length retention but feel confident going forward I'll experience more of it. I've also implemented leave-ins back into my routine with the occasional 2 min reconstructer.

What I would give just for one of them to have even a hint of accountability. Even a "for the sake of brevity, we didn't provide nuance, but we realize now that a deeper/clearer explanation is needed" would be a start! Instead, it's somehow always the client's fault (for not letting the stylust cut enough, for sticking with a bad stylist, for not asking questions in the paid library, for maybe wanting to save a little money, for asking too many questions, for not asking enough questions, etc.) or the stylist's fault (for not having sharp enough shears, for not cutting enough). As a consumer, the expectations are unreasonable. And the judgement for asking a question - even in the see some curls library - is awful.

Greetings! My name is Shvonne, and I’m your friend Shaunna’s stylist. I have so so so much to say!! So this is gonna be a little lengthy. Hair Philosophies BGC is just one hair care philosophy. Just like DevaCurl has one, Ouidad has one and so on and so forth. Everyone is going to view curls and textured hair differently. I think my biggest issue with BGC has been their inability to be flexible and creating a cult-like following that isn’t conducive for business. I am a stylist with 10 years of experience and what I have learned with natural hair is that it isn't one size fits all. A few things though that I want to specifically address: I was trained and affiliated with them and stopped because I don’t do the nice nasty energy from them, especially Aisha. I have my own thoughts on why she’s like that but that’s a discussion for another day. What I also don’t like in the natural hair community are hair bullies and I feel like a lot of their followers are hair bullies. As a stylist I began to see issues with their regimen. As a chemist who makes products for my salon I really saw some deep issues with it over time. I believe in Deep conditioning and using leave-ins. Now for me deep conditioning isn’t optional, however leave-in conditioners are. Not every head of hair needs a leave-in conditioner, especially the cream based ones. Now something I put on every client is usually a multi purpose leave in like it's a 10. Which is also a heat protectant. Anytime I’m going to be diffusing, or putting people under the dryer whether direct or indirect heat I feel like a heat protectant is needed. I enjoy the multi use treatment spray leave ins because they are light and usually don’t break my gels down and mess up my sets. Another one I enjoy adding in depending on the set is Olaplex No. 9 serum. I adore this because it's silicone free and can be used with curly or straight styles. As a cosmetologist and a chemist people must understand that once your hair comes out of your head it is dead. That means you must take care of its integrity with things like deep conditioners. I will even go so far to say if you have coarse hair you need a dryer for deep conditioning. Steamers do absolutely NOTHING for low porosity hair. That deep conditioner with the cap is going to help that treatment penetrate further into the hair shaft. However Shelly what you experienced with your hair is called dehydration. Over time when hair doesn’t get enough of the right kinds of moisture (Penetrating moisture vs sealing moisture. And trust there is a difference) that leads to that hardness of the hair and the frizz. When hair is dehydrated it is frizzy even when wet. Which is why using botanical based products is best. With that being said about botanical based products let’s break down ingredients for a few moments. Water should always be the first ingredient in your products especially cream based products. Naturally raw butters and oils are going to seal in water, however if there is no water present OR the hair is low porosity these products won’t be able to nourish the hair effectively. I am speaking to you as a chemist, not a stylist. When we make any kind of conditioner or cream based product we need something call and emulsifier. Usually the one you’ll see the most is behentrimonium methosulfate. Emulsifiers are there to mix water and oils/butters together. Others that you’ll see usually as co emulsifiers are Cetearyl alcohol and cetyl alcohol. These emulsifiers are melted down with the butters and oils during the mixing process and are then mixed with the water phase. Because of that it breaks the oils and butters down with the water making them easier to penetrate the hair shaft and actually give moisture. Again depending on the formula of the conditioner will determine if it's penetrating or sealing moisture. However what ends up happening is people assume if it's heavy and greasy it's working and that’s not even the full truth. Many times people's hair needs months and months of penetrating moisture via deep conditioners to bring their hair back to life because again if the hair is dead when it leaves the scalp then it will be forever losing moisture and protein and that has to be replenished with deep conditioners. Curly cuts. I promise this is going to divide the nation. So let's break it all the way down. Curly cuts are for SHAPE NOT HEALTH!! STRAIGHT CUTS ARE FOR HEALTH NOT SHAPE! I know folks are gonna disagree with me but let's take this ride together. First off if you can’t truly cut hair a stylist please don't attempt a curly cut. I am so tired of fixing folks' mistakes (personal pet peeve). Many clients, especially my latina clients have zero desire to ever get a blow out or press to cut and that’s perfectly fine. Why? Because they are educated on the health of their hair. Many of my clients are terrified of heat and tbh I don’t blame them. My job is to educate but the decision at the end of the day is theirs. Many of my clients get 2 to 3 curly cuts a year and one blow out or press to just make sure their ends are in check. Now some textures I am harder on like coily because their hair is more prone to breakage and split ends that others because many of them twist more having more manipulation to their hair. However cutting off dead ends helps with length retention. If you desire longer hair then trims are gonna be needed. Many times stylists can’t see those dead ends including me. Many times I can feel them and see them better doing a wet curly cut vs a dry one. However I can cut hair curly, straight, blown out, wet and dry. Doesn’t matter. Figuring out what philosophy works best for you and your hair is what does. I am sick and tired of people pushing what works for them in the masses and that’s period. Your friend Shaunna comes to me and I’ve never blown her out to cut her. Yes she has shorter hair but I could blow her out up top where her taper is to cut her but I don’t because it's not necessary. Because everyone’s hair is different and so are their hair care goals. I follow you on social media and think you are extremely sweet and kind, however something that has to be said is be an expert at your own hair and no one else’s. I say this with kindness because too many times influencers who have all this power can sometimes give out misinformation just like BGC and others can. That doesn’t make what hair philosophies work for you to be wrong Shelly but what you use and what I would use on my hair would be different. However I could be taking what you use as gospel because you’re an influencer. That’s what has become wrong with the natural hair movement and community is there are too many people with misinformation giving it to the masses because they have thousands of followers. My job as a hairstylist is to know how to do any texture that sits in my chair, however even though it comes from a positive and caring place too many times you guys give out the wrong information. So please find stylists to partner with, however be mindful that every single hair stylist philosophy will be different and that’s a disclaimer that has to be given. I always lay down what mine are with new clients so they can get to know me as a stylist and what I do specifically. It doesn’t make anyone wrong or right, but trying to make people see things from your point of view only makes you just as bad as BGC. Lastly, I want to speak on BGC as a stylist who spent thousands on their class. They have made millions off the insecurities of the natural hair community and created a toxic natural hair care environment that I have decided not to be a part of since 2020. I am not a hair bully and don’t condone the way they speak to people, especially Aisha. However please don’t make your platform all about debunking them, instead focus on better energy, education and a community of natural hair women who are focused on positivity. Their terrible attitudes and business practices will eventually catch up to them; it's only a matter of time. However if you continue to stand on this soap box again you are no better than them trying to tear each other down. It may be time to really figure out what you want your platform to be as an influencer because you do have the ability to influence. Why don’t you use that for more positivity instead of trying to tear them down when eventually folks are going to see through the BS. That’s just my 2 cents on the entire video. Sending you light and love.

I understand BGC wanting to protect the brand that it's taken years to bulid. But this could have been an opportunity to broaden their audience by introducing some flexibility for ladies with different hair needs. It didn't even need to be publicized. Like a "secret menu" type of thing 😂 It would have been wise to simply acknowledge that hair is not one size fits all, and some consumers may have success with a different regimen. The expectation of cult like allegiance is disturbing. Especially when they themselves are brand agnostic. As a 25 year licensed professional I genuinely enjoyed their content and found some of the info useful. But a while back I too found the delivery harsh, abrasive and unnecessarily hostile at times and unfollowed. Best wishes to you on your re-routed hair journey.

I’ve had 3 curly cuts at a salon in Chicago since January. My last and final curly cut appointment was a disaster. Prior to my last appointment, I was finally able to retain an inch of hair. During my appointment, I asked the curly stylist, if there was a way to modify the cut so that I could retain some of my length, and that’s where the tension started. Long story short the stylist started saying that my length doesn’t live in the back of my head, which is not at all what I was asking. She proceeded to cut using the same method that BGC Cut it Kinky stylists use, disregarding what I wanted from the cut. I lost all the length I had retained. My hair was also very hard from all the gel the stylist used, so I washed my hair after my appointment. It was filled with tangles less than 24 hours after my cut. I have been following the BGC method for my hair and can say I only started retaining length once I started back using my leave in conditioner and stopped doing the wash n goes. I can confirm that everything you mentioned in this video happened to my hair, including tangling, split ends, single strand knots, dryness, and just overall damage happened to my hair. Thank you for speaking up and sharing your truth, because I’m sure this is happening to many other women who have followed this method.

You all are putting words to what I have been experiencing. I thank everyone who is speaking out for that. I haven’t been able to retain as much length since starting this journey. My hair has been harder to detangle and has higher split ends, overall contributing to the lack of growth (obviously it’s breaking off much faster than it can grow). I will be adding deep conditioner, leave-in, and straight haircuts from now on. I hope this will help me retain length and mitigate the splitting ends. Edit: For reference I’ve been indoctrinated for only 2 years. I’m glad I’ve woken up before things got worse. The space conditions us to believe that if their hair care practices aren’t working, then it’s your own fault not the hair care routine being promoted as healthy.

This is so unfortunate. I want to apologize on behalf of all of the Natural Haircare / Curl Specialist, who approach curly hair with intention, individuality, and expertise. Yes, they do explain the science + technical parts of hair that makes sense and clicked for many of us BUT a lot of their methodologies I never agreed with because hair needs conditioners~ ALL KINDS! REGULAR, DEEP & LEAVE INS. Hair needs the added hydration from leave-ins. The leave ins help to create some hydration/ slip so you minimize mechanical damage. I’ve had multiple new clients come in my chair and try to tell me how to do their hair based on the methodology of BGC AND I explain to them if their methodologies work so well why is your hair still so dry???. They could never answer that for me. I’m not downplaying what they’ve done and how they’ve trail- blazed in this lane but I knew their mindset/ methods was causing harm because their approach seemed one size fits all to me . They are brand agnostic, but at the same time they recommend the same brands to every client. It doesn’t matter what “ essential hair elements” they had, they still recommended the same products. With that approach you disregard the client’s individual needs and box them into haircare that may not work for them. You miss the opportunity to give them customized results because everybody is using the same products. Every stylist has their expertise, tip & trips but they don’t work for everyone. I believe every Stylist should be a walking representation of what they specialize in. You promote hair hair health~your hair should look, feel and behave healthy. Total transparency: When I look to a stylist or an educator for inspiration, I’m assessing all that they are. Some may view this statement judgemental but when it comes to hair care specialists, make up artist, nail technician, and anyone that’s in a profession where we’re looking at the physical aesthetic, I need to be impressed …….and I never was! That’s why I didn’t invest even though several people suggested that I take their classes. I think they did try to make there methods the “industry standard” and now the flaws in their system are being exposed and they don’t like that. Shelly you’re courageous, smart, vigilant & strong. ALWAYS speak your truth because it will bless many people. Continue to be intentional and proactive in the health of your hair and watch it keep flourishing!

@@shelly.v.247She put out a video today about how she doesn’t care if people don’t like her. That’s a sign that it actually bothers her. A few years ago when I was looking for a curl artist, I came across her page and didn’t go with her because something was off putting about her. I watched a few videos where she was complaining about clients. That’s not professional. The stylist I chose instead confirmed my feeling about her, as well as my current stylist.

Sis, I canceled my subscription with BGC and the SSC in April. I had been subscribing since October of 2022. I also thought the dryer was too harsh. I only dried for 30 minutes and top and front of my hair was always so “Dry”. My stylist gave me a straight cut and a deep cleaning and deep conditioning treatment in April and my hair was wonderful. I have since then added my deep conditioner once a week and my leave in every wash day (I wash twice a week). I’m so glad you shared and was our voice. Thank you.

Yup exactly Sis! I just found never wrap my head around the hooded dryer and it being okay for such long periods of time without a leave-in. There’s even a well known CIK that I asked during a live about it and she said it could definitely burn the hair! After that I asked in BGC again and was told no it could not. So I just decided to air on the side of caution and bought a new one 😆 I wasn’t ready to let go that I was told it was okay and wouldn’t harm my hair. Eventually I pretty much stopped using it. I might start using it again now that I’m using a leave-in but I’m still a little nervous about it. 😅 Anyway, I’m so glad your are listening to what your hair needs. I also thank you for sharing your experience with us! ♥️💯

Honestly this coulda been a good opportunity for BGC to reach a new audience of those of us not yet on their course, they honestly handled this poorly. There is no shame in admitting that hair care is not a one size fits all, but they instead wanna box everyone into a single category It honestly feels like they feel threatened their whole empire is gonna tumble, when in reality it wouldn't have because alot of the fundamentals they teach are pure common sense, for instance simplifying your routine and investing in proper cleansing practices Truly sad how you and rosie are being vilified for speaking your truth and it doesn't help when some of their minions who are not privy to the entire conversation drop comments under y'all videos basically saying y'all damaged your own hair

I don’t know where the heck I’ve been because I am just hearing about this, this week. I thought I was trippin because I was experiencing something similar, webbing, shedding, etc. and brought this to my stylists attention and I have since got a cut and tweaked my regimen by adding back in my leave in conditioner, and deep conditioner. I personally believe that everything is not for everybody and the teachings are not a one size fits all because everyone’s hair requires something different. I noticed a big difference in my hair in January when my stylist gave me the Olaplex treatment and I thought it was the Olaplex because my hair has not been right since. So when I went for my maintenance in June I told my stylist to cut my hair not trim but give me a cut at which time she blew it out and cut it. Since then I have changed my regimen (started back with my deep conditioning and leave in conditioners) One thing for sure, you have to do what works for you! Thanks again! Hang in there sis. I can see this is bothering you but this too shall pass. No one should be bullied because they are speaking what they are experiencing with their hair. I will definitely be discussing my new regimen on my channel. And directing my viewers to yours in case they are experiencing the same thing. We have to enlighten each other. Thanks again. Peace & Blessings.

I really appreciate your transparency and truth. I have been following BGCs for a little while. I have yet to subscribe to the program due to other priorities but made small changes in the things I had seen online and small tips they had given. I had every intention of purchasing, however, one thing that always bothered me and was Aisha's tone and delivery. She's been outright rude to people in her lives and it really turned me off. The second thing was the two times I tried to do a washngo without leave-in. My hair felt like straw the next day and i've been a botanical gel, no butters, oils, etc, washngo natural for YEARS! When I added water to my hair it still felt like straw so I went back to my tried and true of leave-in and gel. I've been noticing some of the same issues with my hair upon purchasing a hooded dryer and have already resumed my previous routine. I understand everything doesn't work for everyone and I'm happy for those that found success. However it's just not for me. I'm not surprised that they cancelled the live and it's unfortunate because I think this would have been a great opportunity to address these questions so many have and reached a new audience.

I think this is one of the most concise, well said explanations of the BGC methods. After more than a year, I have gone back to regular deep conditioning and using a light layer of leave ins. I've never been a fan of oil and butter, so I never missed that. I'm a fan of Narada also, and he's been very thorough with how he educates us. I'm so sorry you've gone through this and so glad you're speaking up about it. I currently am choosing to wear my hair short due to graying and hormonal changes. Thank you for sharing Shelly it’s a very hard and touchy subject! Hopefully it will be helpful to those who have similar experiences! And I am with you in that it’s much more easier to share positive aspects than share when something has negatively affected your hair! I also have noted since sharing my final experience on this issue that we need to keep doing what works for our individual head of hair! Get yourself a good clarifying shampoo that what most individuals lack in their routine! It’s very simple Shampoo, condition and style how we desire and if that process works keep doing it! If you enjoy prepoo keep doing it! Just do what works and is best for our individual head of hair! I noticed most people who have had success have in a sense not really been doing the method they have returned to deep conditioning and using leave in! The one hour routine is called that because we are simplifying that routine cutting certain steps from our Wash day (pre poo, deep conditioning and leave in) I have since taken this as a learning experience! We are never too old to learn!

Shelly, I certainly feel your pain/genuine concern. As women our hair means a great deal to us. India Arie says “I’m not my hair”. Yeah, until it’s all jacked up… We’re all on these social media forms doing the same thing the next chic is doing ….trying to learn our hair and look good. I tuned those 2 characters out when they first came on the scene. They showed up in my KZbin recommendations so l clicked and was so turned off by their cockiness that I couldn’t look at them…I could only listen and then that became unbearable. I did however, listen to many others that gave advice from them and I was definitely following BGC’s rules. Fast forward….2years in(NO OILS,NO BUTTERS,NO CREAMS,NO DEEP COND,NO LEAVE INS AND 2 CURLY CUTS) by BGC trained stylist…..IM A MESS!! Dry Velcro ends, web hair not holding, Frizziness…I use good products…AG shampoo/Hair Bath,AG Cond/Innersense Cond…UFD,ICH at the advice of my stylist. SMDH. I didn’t want to believe you and Rosie(my apologies)But I knew it was something not adding up. I’m back to deep conditioning, using leave ins, using different moisturizing shampoo and no curly cuts….I don’t think I’m ready for any stylist right now….my hair is starting to have life again after only 3 weeks…You have my upmost respect for speaking out and confirming what we all know is true💕

You have to speak your truth, and no one should make you feel bad about that. Your experience is yours and based on what I've seen, you are not the only one who had a similar experience. Be encouraged and keep doing what is best for your hair. Since I was curious I signed up for See Some Curls for a month a year or so ago. I follow a very similar hair care method as what BGC promotes, however, I've never removed leave-in. Even though I don't deep condition often, I know my hair so I do a true deep condition with heat when it needs it maybe a few times a year. I'm more likely to use a deep conditioner as a rinse-out conditioner. I don't use raw oils, butter, or grease. My scalp can't handle sitting under a hooded dryer so I always diffuse or air dry. I wear my hair long it's currently TBL so I didn't have an interest in a curly cut for shape. My hair is cut straight across the bottom while in a blowout. It seems those small differences may make a big difference in how healthy the hair is.

Hi! Yes, I was having so many tangles, fairy knots, and combing out quite a bit of hair. I wash my hair 2x weekly because it just doesn't do well with 1x week. I went to my hair stylist that I've been going to for over 15 years, and after blowing it out with warm low heat, she showed me the actual damage. I couldn't really see the damage when it was curly. I only see it when I would do a twistout on the ends. I would clip the thin strands then, but it didn't make much difference.

They are still stuck on the elements of hair and saying some people hair doesn’t have a shine. Well honestly natural hair has a sheen to it when properly moisturized. People can repair their hair it might take a while form some. Oils can actually help repair hair. I’m a example of someone who thought my hair couldn’t be shiny and thought it looking dull was how it was suppose to be. My hairstylists got me right and showed and told me my hair has potential to be healthy and moisturize

If it weren't for you, Rosie and AfrikanHairGod I would've still been struggling with my wash n gos and frustrated. I would've never got my ends assessed and got a proper cut. It's really a shame they refuse to take any accountability in this. Many women are having these issues and they don't seem to have much desire to get to the root of the problem. It's just completely our fault apparently even though most of us are diligently following their recommendations... At the end of the day I chose to follow their methodology because I thought it would give me the desired results I wanted (healthy long hydrated coils). Unfortunately, it didn't work that way for me. Omg first & foremost, thank you so much Shelly for speaking up on this! You are braver than you know. Woooooo I have so many thoughts on this!!! I think I’ll have to DM you b/c there’s so much to say. But I’ll start by saying you have a supporter in me. I’ve been watching AfrikanHairGod’s videos which brought me over to you. I’ll be watching Rosie’s next. I never fully subscribed to BGC (as in I have never paid for any of their “education”, etc..) and literally have only had curly cuts done twice however, the very next wash day after each one, my hair was always a tangled mess! I couldn’t understand how this could happen literally right after a fresh cut! That’s when I quickly realized that these cuts weren’t working for me. I sought out a stylist in my city who does natural hair but doesn’t subscribe to CIK or any of the “curly girl” methodologies.. and now in my late 30s, my 4c hair is down my back. It’s the absolute longest that it’s ever been in my life. I use deep conditioners, leave-ins are a must! And I even use a light amount of Sulfur 8 on my scalp- so yes even hair grease! Lol I get my hair blown out each time I get a trim, which is every 3 months for accuracy and to cut out any “dead ends” or possible damage (which is none since this is the only time I use heat). I’m trying to understand why with these curly cuts, BGC is not encouraging true hair health and LENGTH at all?! No DCs and leave- ins at all?!?!? It’s all been very strange to me. They are very cult-like and the snarky attitude I feel like is what “puts ppl in their place” so that no one questions them or is afraid to. I think it’s all been a part of the plan. There’s literally a white/Hispanic stylist on here by the name “Blowout Professor” and even he uses leave-ins and oils on his white clientele! So if straight hair needs it, what does that tell us about textured hair? He actually believes that in all of haircare, leave-ins are single-handedly the most important product. You should check out his page. Anyway, I’m willing to send a DM to them as well but idk how effective it’ll be if I never was a full on member.. I would just watch their lives & stuff out of curiosity to see what they were feeding to the ppl. So sry that it’s caused damage for you and others. This reminds of the DevaCurl scandal when Stephanie Mero (@thecurlninja) was the main one speaking up and became the face of the movement. For those who have paid good money to BGC only to be deceived (possibly on purpose to keep ppl coming back!), I smell a lawsuit coming.

Hi Shelly, I just started watching and wanted to say you are not crazy. I was subscribed to see some curls for awhile. Even though they had 2 leave in conditioner/gel systems listed on their “curated” list, I rarely if ever saw anyone using a leave in/gel system. all I ever saw anyone use is uncle funkys and I create hold. I almost feel like the leave in is listed just so bgc can drop any responsibilities for the choices made.

Hi Shelley , I think there is a level of immaturity with the founders of Black Girl Curls. When you put yourself and your ideas out there, you have to be able to take criticism. They have a method that does work for some but not for every head of hair. I think your hair is beautiful. At the end of the day, we all have to figure out what is best for our hair. We cannot follow someone's method blindly without accessing the method and figuring out if it is working for YOUR hair..

Well stated Sis and so very true! When I found them I was fairly new to being natural again. I had been natural in the early 2000’s but so much has changed now. So many different products and suggestions out there. So it was amazing to come across this a platform where people with our type of hair were being educated on how to care for our curly natural hair! 🙌🏽 However, I quickly learned how abrasive the energy could be at times. I can’t tell you how many LIVES I sat and watched and heard people get talked down too. 🥺 It got to a point that I unsubscribed because it was so bothersome to me. I felt there was little to no room for anyone to give any critical feedback and it be received well. When that happens it just shuts people down. Btw, I had an experience in SSC where it happened to me as well. So I am speaking from first hand experience. Anyway, you didn’t ask for all that 👀🤣 Thank you for your comment and for allowing me to share as well. I appreciate you Fren‼️💖💯

I agree with everything you said (you assesment of the stylist), It's a shame that you got bullyied by followers because your having and questionning. I have issues since February \ March and I was dilligent in the caring of my hair. The lack of using leave in and deep conditionning (more requently instead of doing it once a month) for we I'm sure are the reasons that I was experiencing difficulty detangling. Even if we were using gel with great ingredients (emollient and all) it's still gel... So back to using leave in under gel and more deep conditionning session and doing cut on blowout hair.

Thank you for sharing your experience! In this climate, it takes bravery to share anything contrary to the trendy/popular narrative. I’m obviously late to the conversation, but I did see the BGC live that you are referring to and having no context at the time, it still felt nasty to me. They had some nerve to say that you could’ve DM’d them. First of all, you owe them nothing. Secondly, they are not welcoming ppl. You spoke to what many have experienced, but are too afraid to speak up with their reaction on that livestream being the very reason. I used the BGC method for three years and I noticed that length retention became little to none. I already had my reservations about curly cuts bc I couldn’t wrap my mind around how a curly cut could possibly clip all split ends. Nonetheless, I wanted to trust the process and now I have little to show for it. After making this observation, I decided to go back to getting trims on blown out or straightened hair (bc that’s what helped me retain length before) and I can tell by the feel of my hair that it’s helped significantly. I will say that I don’t think I had as much damage as some of the others who have tried the BGC method bc I rarely did WNGs since twist-outs are my go-to hairstyle. However, the damage could still be observed by my ends. I’ve also had to go back to deep conditioning every so often. Anyway… I guess we can take it as a lesson learned- chew the meat and spit out the bones! Absolutely shampoo regularly, but listen to your hair and trust that you know what has worked for your head of hair. Lastly, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Pun intended! 😉 *Edited to fix grammatical errors.

I think the hooded dryer with some of those firm gels was not the business especially without a leave in. I got a little breakage at the crown and was like nah, this ain't it! I stopped using UFD without a leave in or didn't use it at all. Also ICH is a bit harsh to use all the time. I get great definition with Bee Girl Mousse and a leave in. 99% of the time, I put my leave in on and allow it to set a bit before going in with mousse or a styling product. I haven't had any trouble from the hooded dryer since then. ICH would have my hair CRISP at the crown lol. I really like the product but started modifying my usage of it.

I just have to say how incredibly thankful I am that I’ve stumbled upon AfriKan hair God you and Rosie. I did the hair detox when it first came out. My hair felt incredibly harsh with the products and it always felt dried out. Whenever I challenged Aiesha she was absolutely nasty! She was a real mean girl! I almost went to her too but something about her nasty attitude I just couldn’t get with it. I went back to basics started doing hot oil treatments incorporating leaves and deep conditioners and my hair has been thriving ever since. The real nail in the coffin was when Aiesha tried to come for the Indians and their Ayurvedic hair care traditions. I was like yeah nah she talking out her ass now. I also always took into account her years in the game, she was just too new for me, and acting like she knew it all. Crazy thing is her hair used to be a lot longer than it is now before she went to beauty school and it’s never grown back out since. It always looks dry and again she is just flat out nasty. I’m glad you are speaking your truth I went through the same thing.

I’m wondering if long term wash n go’s are damaging to certain hair types. I don’t follow BGC, but I do believe that for those of us who have a tighter curl pattern, avoiding products heavy with oils/ butters will give us the best definition. However, it’s also true that tighter curls have finer hair strands. So without the protection of leave-ins, oils, butters, etc., from that friction of raking, shingling, & single strand knots, may be weakening the hair over time. Those with looser texture and/or thicker strands may not have the same experience…just my theory. I’ve been doing wash n go’s primarily for about 2 years or so. I have fine hair , very tight curls. I do not have a curly cut but I’ve also noticed that my ends get raggedy even tho my hair has grown to armpit length. So now for me, I’m experimenting with wearing more stretched styles and putting the wash n go’s up for while😢…just to test my theory.

It might be the same thing as mine. I was told the lipid layer is gone in some of the areas. She said my hair is extremely dehydrated from the lack of DC & leave-ins. So I need to DC with heat. I’m also using a leave-in now too and this may sound extreme but I’ve started to use a heat protectant before drying my hair. Keep us posted on how your hair is doing as we all navigate this journey together. AND……mostly importantly, it’s not in your head Sis just like it wasn’t in mine‼️💖

You know Shelly I was sitting here watching your video and I’ve been getting a curly cut since 2018 when I got a Devacut and I was using Devacurl products but I also started using CurlMix and they have a moisturizer as part of their 4 step program but I also periodically used a deep conditioner. I started using UFD/ICH around 2019/2020. I had also used SheaMoisture Manuka Honey. I also wash twice a week, I sweat a lot in my scalp, workout 4 days a week but I’ll see how it goes, so far so good.

Exactly. They said deep conditioners are treatments and that if your hair didn’t need it, then there was no need Even stylists like Jennifer rose would say the same thing and she DOES NOT DO CURLY CUTS. For leave ins, they said it wasn’t necessary In a wng and especially if you use your rinse out conditioner well… and it’s true No one said leave ins could damage your hair. They said it could affect your wng because it’s not supposed to be used in wngs Even on see some curls virtual library, they have leave in recommendations there.. So how are people saying they are solely against leave ins when they have leave in recommendations on their library????? If there was an issue that deep conditioning solved, how does it make them liars? That’s clearly what they said. It’s meant toe solve an issue but people were using it every week and it wasn’t necessary at all Lol

I’m sorry you had such a hurtful experience. I appreciate your transparency and even your willingness to share that you may have had a misunderstanding with Aleise which led to this talk no longer coming to fruition. While I had a different understanding of the instruction given around deep conditioners and the reasons to use them. I respect that you understood that they were to only be prescribed by a professional. I understood that the detox was intended for you to be able to understand your hair without anything so that you can make informed decisions about the condition of your hair and whether a treatment was needed or whether you wanted to add in a leave in or not. I agree it was discouraged but I guess I saw the detox as an opportunity to understand my hair without anything on it so that when I do use deep conditioners which have decided to use periodically when my styles are not turning out as planned that I know why I’m doing it. Sending you a hug and lots of love. Speaking up and asking questions is a brave thing.

I definitely could have misunderstood their recommendations. However, I’ve taken it upon myself to ask several curl friends to see what their interpretation was. Each one has echoed my same interpretation. I will also say that I asked the question on a few of my Instagram lives, and the answers were mixed. So, it’s clear that there needs to be a clear recommendation for future see some curl subscribers.😅 Either way, the ownership falls on my shoulders because it’s my hair. I’m glad your hair is doing great and I wish you nothing but the best with your beautiful curls! 💖

Just came across your channel. Im glad I did as I’ve had around 5 curly cuts and I am regretting having them. I don’t recognise my hair. I used to have long curly hair and now my hair is so shrunk it doesn’t grow down like it did. My hair is at that Velcro stage and it’s getting me down daily. I need to reverse this cut as it’s. It the most flattering for me. I’ll have to get my hair blown out to address the shape and health of my strands. I don’t deny it looks great on many people but it’s not for me.

I didn’t purchase the book since I was in the digital online platform. You’re right, they did have them on their list but I felt they always discouraged the use of them. Also, I recently just watched a KZbin video that Aisha was in where she was saying there’s no need for a leave in etc. It would honestly be nice if their verbal recommendations matched their written ones.

Thank you, thank you, thank you 🙏🏾💕 Before I started following you here and on IG, I too had notice my hair was looking/ responding & feeling different after following BCG methodology. I realized the method was not for me due to my lifestyle differs from theirs…. when I say lifestyle, I am referring to working out 6 day/week. My common sense told me there is no way my hair can remain healthy with me washing only 1x/week and not using any leave-in and/ or deep conditioning; I only wear WNGs and my hair felt & looked dry by day 2. I would get curly cuts aprx every 4 months or so and my ends felt great but only for about 4 weeks and then I would noticed my ends felt rough. I’ve incorporated leave-ins & DC back into my routine and don’t care how long my wash day takes cuz I am worth it ! 😇 My next cut will definitely be on blown out hair so that my hair can be accurately assessed. I appreciate you addressing this topic and sharing your experience. Continue to be a blessing to others, stay true, stand firm and to never back down 💝 Joshua 1:9

I appreciate how you approached this video. It's disappointing to hear how BGC has responded, particularly Aeliese backing out. Though when you said that she agreed to talk with you instead of Aishia, I thought "really?" I'm saddened by how all of this unfolded because I firmly believe the fallout didn't have to be this drastic. My experience has been different because I don't wear a wash n go. I've never felt adept with gels. My hair is usually stretched. And creams were in the mix in some way. I also saw my stylist monthly because she would touch up my greys. The notion of not seeing the stylist for 3-4 months always seemed odd to me. But I just chalked it up to me feeling inept with my hair. To me that just seemed like a long time to go without guidance especially if the hair is in a corrective state. The hooded dryer piece is interesting. I always wondered how so many women could withstand the high heat for 45 minutes to an hour. It is hot. But again I chalked that up to me simply not having high density hair. Ultimately there are a number of factors that need to be addressed and I think it's incumbent upon BGC in their CIK training to emphasize fully assessing the hair and asking clients the right questions about how they are experiencing their hair. Ask if detangling is a challenge; are they experiencing webbing, etc. It appears that some women are not comfortable sharing their experience with their stylist. And that should never be the case.

Yes I agree with you Sis, they need to fully address things. They did not have to get this far. To just clarify one point. I was the one who said I did not want to speak with Aishia. I said I would only be open to speaking to Aeliese because she seems way more approachable and less aggressive. I could be wrong but those are my thoughts. I’m glad your hair is doing well. @@shelly.v.247 Understood. I meant I was surprised that she agreed knowing that you didn't want to talk with Aishia. I have been in the SSC library and space off and on for about 2 years now as a consumer. What stands out to me is the BGC defense saying, "we never told you to not use leave in or deep conditioner." There absolutely is difference in language between how to use clarifying shampoos and deep conditioners. Clarifying shampoos have always been consistently deacribed as "usually 6 to 8 weeks or as needed", whereas deep conditioner are (1) not even called out in the latest iteration in the SSC library and (2) in the older materials from fall 2021 at least, deep conditioners are not talked about much. That difference in language makes it seem like deep conditioning is optional. There absolutely is discouragement and judgement if a person asks about deep conditioning or leave in. If someone says "my hair feels dry", there is never an actual answer, just them saying, "dryness isn't real". Maybe (part of) the answer is as simple as deep conditioners are not optional, much like clarifying is not optional. And much like they give guidelines for assessing when clarifying is necessary, provide guidelines for assessing when a deep conditioner is necessary.

Great points! To me there has just been a ton of confusion around a lot of it. For example, they say they never said don’t use a leave in yet they are still pushing out content saying they do not recommend a leave in underneath a wng. They say it has no purpose in a wng. However, when asked about it they say they haven’t said that. So it becomes extremely more confusing at that point. Also, another example is they say dry hair doesn’t have a feeling. Yet they’ll turn around and then say my hair feels dry because it’s time to wash it. 🤷🏽‍♀️ They also say it’s here’s no such thing as 4C but then say where are all their 4C girls at??? In my opinion they contradict themselves left and right. Never seem to take accountability for anything other than when people are singing their praises. I got to a point where I started to closely watch and listen to it all. I was also noticing the awful changes in my hair. When I asked questions I was met with a ton of pushback! So now I’m working with my previous stylist (who I was going to prior to finding BGC & CIK) and she’s helping me repair my hair. I’m grateful for this lesson because it’s caused me to think critically and not just blindly follow and listen to “the experts.” I appreciate your very insightful comment. Thank you for sharing your thoughts Sis. 💖💯

I have never worn my hair in its natural state. Eventually I stopped relaxing it, and frankly, I admire the natural curly girls because of the carefree styling. I liked the kinky, sorta unkempt style. It was during Covid that I decided I would stop blowdrying and curling my hair with irons. I began cutting inches off every few months. And having no idea how to really go about styling my natural hair, I found BGC. I have always had very healthy hair. I used leave ins, deep conditioned, and once a month used oils and a plastic cap to marinate the hair a few hours. I was at the time going to a barber and eventually I grew out a new head of hair. So, I never got into the cut it kinky method, as I never felt good about that kind of a cut. I am thankful I at least did not fall for that part of the program. My hair, IMO, was gorgeous, until two years later. One day after having my barber cut my hair, I noticed that my hair was not right. The curls stopped popping, my hair was dull, and to this day, I am not quite sure how to describe it. I was devastated. Now granted, I also found myself to be severely anemic, and no doubt this had some dire effect on my hair as well. But I have been anemic in the past and my hair never suffered. I then began searching online what possibly could have gone so terribly wrong. I began to backtrack my hair routine, and realized, I stopped my haircare routine because BGC stated that it was all WRONG. I stopped the very things that kept my hair healthy. So with a round of IV iron infusions, I began taking inches off of my hair at my three month interval hair cuts. I began deep conditioning, using a leave in, stopped the AG products (I continue to use the Innersense shampoo and conditioner and alternate with curlsmith products), stopped using Uncle Funkys and basically use only the Doux products. I still absolutely love the freedom of how I style my hair to get that Kinky sorta unkempt look. I am a nurse, working 12 hour days, and this is really a carefree style that I love. I began to use the diffuser on my hair and because my hair is fine, I need only to diffuse sparingly. What a difference I began to see in my hair. The crazy thing is that I have one big patch of hair on top of my head that there is very little kink, or elasticity. I know that some of my hair is just ruined. Hopefully in a year or two, I will have a new head of hair, while slowly cutting my hair off. I could kick myself many times over for falling for this method. But again, thank goodness I allowed my hair to be cut blown out to get a precision cut. And to be fair, BGC did help me to feel confident wearing my hair in a kinky style. I was always taken aback by the attitudes of its founders but I knew how to not let that deter me from the knowledge that I thought was good. I have seen surgeons who have horrible bedside manners, but they are amazing in their ability to save lives. They have done what many medically thought to be impossible. And I am living proof of their skills. I had no problem getting past the arrogance because I knew that doctor was the best to help me. I now believe that my haircare woes had more to do with “the methods” more than my anemia. I am relieved to know that I was not losing my mind about my hair. I am grateful for this channel and for everyone who offered their story. Like so many, I too feel that if BGC would just come clean about their methods and kinky cuts, they probably could survive. Thank you so much.

Heyyy !! Loved the video ❤ i guess i never experienced dryness , because i never stopped using a deep conditioner 😅 i dont deep condition everytime i wash my hair but its definitely more than recommended . I just figuered if its not broke dont fix it lol Also i dont really use a leave in but with custards like bee curl by the doux , i have been implementing them because the hold is soo strong . One more thing 😅 i dont think you did anything wrong ❤ you were respectful , and you were able to explain to people the difficulties that you were experiencing with your hair . If people took offense to that , then eff them lol this is also a reason why i dont follow /hang on to peoples everyword. Alot of these stylist / youtube stylist have cult like followers and they are all equally disgusting in how they engage with someone who disagrees with that said hairstylist/ youtube stylist. Bgc has definitely helped alot of us get to a place of ease with our hair , but with anything we need to make sure we are checking in with our hair . I take the info i need and i leave the rest , because not everything is cut and dry . I love your honesty , and how sincere you are . Never stop doing you !! ❤

I still cowash once a week, i use leave in, i air dry, and i use oils in my deep conditioner. I also have my curly cutter trim my hair on old wash and gos that she basically stretched out thru. I hate that hard funky gel but i love that doux foam. I hate that hood dryer. I know u are 100% right about the deep conditioning and leave ins. Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m also starting to experience the same thing. I’m noticing that my hair is super rough during the washing process and am starting to reflect to figure out what’s going on. Did you start going to a new stylist? I’ve also found BGCs to be a bit much (ugh I hate to say cult like… but if the shoe fits). I never purchase their materials, but started going to one of their stylist. I’m also considering going back to other products, because the results of some of the ones suggested just aren’t commensurate with the prices.

Hi Sis! 💖 I started out by going to one of their recommended stylist. Then I switched to one that was out of state. They were both good but different from one another. Once I suspected my ends might be extremely split, I ran back to my original stylist from back in the day! She’s very familiar with my hair because she had been my stylist for the last 15 years + She cut my hair in it’s blown out state and now it seems to be wayyyyyy better!!!! I’m also, trying out new products. Some more affordable while others are not. I’m no longer concerned with all the rules around products etc. If it works I’m in! PERIODT ‼️😆

Sorry that you had a bad experience. I really think this problem is stylist and knowledge based driven. The 1st CIK stylist i went to had very little product knowledge. I found myself immediately annoyed by the fact that she could've answer any of my questions so i moved on to another sytlist. I can say that my CIK stylist now has way more product knowledge than the 1st. She went through all my products that i had and told me what to keep, what to give away and what to throw away. She stated all the products i had were for the most quality but not for my hair (baby fine with high density). She had me using a deep conditioner from day one. I started with Oloplex and then moved over to Joico when we realized the OP was not enough. I think some of the issues can be if a stylist only came through the CIK program with little other experience. My current stylist was doing hair long before BGC ever came along. She even had me stop using the AG shampoo and conditioner immediately after the detox. In her opinion the AG products were really only good for the detox and can mess up certain types of hair if used long term. You do however have to be your own advocate and know your own hair.

Hi Shelly. Proud of you for speaking up because it helps someone else who may be going through the same or thinking they are going through the same. I Personally do follow this simple hair care and for the most part my hair is fine. However, I started out following exactly as they said because I will not know if it worked or not without doing so. I realized after a few months in that I just don’t like UFD so I stopped, I realized that my mostly fine to medium strands get extremely too weighed down with 3 gels so I stopped that. I like my curl set so much better with a light-medium hold gel as a base, medium-hard hold gel mixed/cocktailed with a style foam as a topper. That wasn’t in their “curriculum” I had to find that out. So I don’t agree with them saying hair care isn’t trail and error. It absolutely is. All products don’t work for everyone. It doesn’t give them the desired look. I literally don’t like UFD on no one’s head in my household lol but that’s like the GOAT for them and they swear you NEED it. I still don’t deep condition nor use leavein and I think I’ve been fine but if I find out I need it. I’m good with going back. I’ve learned a lot from BGC but I also am a person that takes things with a grain of salt ALWAYS. Their way is NOT bible. I knew from the beginning that I was only getting curly cuts until I got to a length where shape wouldn’t matter and I truly feel like there is a point of length where shape doesn’t matter. I’m sure they would disagree of course but that’s what I believe and what I’m going to do lol anyways thanks for being strong and outspoken as you seem to always have been. Best of luck

I totally understand your concerns. My hair was over moisturize due to no strength or protein conditioning. Now I condition 1 week with moisturizing conditioner and the next week with a strength/protein. I ALSO STARTED DEEP CONDITIONING again Thank you for sharing.

Great video Shelly. I agree it is the non use of leave ins and deep conditioning. Let me share my story. I wear an afro (very short one)...I don't define my curls...never have (personal choice). I started following BGC when they first started the 30 day detox. It helped me tremendously even tho I wasn't chasing curl definition I had an extremely itchy scalp from using bad products. Anyway better products stopped the itching and my afro looked great. It actually had a nice curl pattern. At that time I was using KCNT and the gel and deep conditioned weekly. My hair was awesome. By the way I never did curly cuts...just went to the barber. All was good. Then I transitioned to Curlmix products (again they have a moisturizer aka leave in and gel). Continued to deep condition weekly. Again the little afro was thriving (I keep it very short). Fast forward...I retired, COVID hit and I started cutting my hair myself. I also spent a lot of time on the internet with BGC and even did SSC for a bit. Started following their "new" recommendations of not deep conditioning and no leave in. I started noticing my afro was no longer looking quite right. It was just a big ball of frizz...none of the little "round" curls I had. I was washing twice a week and even switched to all Innersense products...things kept going downhill. So I started trouble shooting. Used Curlmix again...sometimes just used the moisturizer or just another leave in type product. Hair looked better but still not quite there. Then along came you and another person that you know (not gonna mention her name) and the stylist from Pur Bella products. And the light bulb went off. I NEEDED TO START BACK WEEKLY DEEP CONDTIONING!!! Guess what? After about a month my afro is starting to look like it used to. I also stopped using any Innersense products...I don't think they were hydrating enough for my hair. Oh let me mention that I have gray hair. My scalp no longer produces any sebum at all. My little hair NEEDS that leave in and deep conditioner especially since I live in dry, dry, hot, hot AZ!!!! So yes you are spot on! Don't feel bad...now we know. BGC started off giving good advice for hair health. I just feel like in the last couple of years it became more about the longevity of a set and the sharp angles of a cut than it did about hair health. Just my opinion. I don't dislike them...but I have now had some ah ha moments... Thanks for your videos on this

Also wanted to add, I still use a hooded dryer, but I have never dried on high. I only do 5 minutes on med low (my super short hair dries quickly as I don't use much product). I also use a more moisturizing shampoo along with the Curlmix All Purpose shampoo. Innersense was not it for me.

Your story just confirms that we are on the right track with adding leave-ins and deep conditioning treatments back in! Especially living in hot and dry Az! Like you, I don’t dislike BGC either. However, I don’t necessarily appreciate how the main spokesperson for iamblackgirlcurls speaks harshly to women of color. But I’ve realized that sometimes hurt people hurt people. 😢 Anyway, I’m so happy to hear that your beautiful fro/curls are bouncing back. I’m praying mine have a full recovery too! 💖🙏🏽

I love the stylist from Pur Bella. I went to her once and she was so kind and encouraging. She's who helped convince me to go back to using leave in and deep conditioner (as needed).

@@kkwgirl1Thanks for sharing your experience. What products - shamp, con dish, leave in, deep condish- do you find to be more moisturizing for you?

I never stopped deep conditioning every other week or using coconut oil (which my own hair has always loved). I went back to leave in conditioner. I’m confused as to why they calls it a styler 🤔. I was getting a week long wash in go with leave in conditioner for years before getting curl cuts. The only thing I changed up were my products and diffusing instead of air drying.
