what problems with air cooled engines? They were better than the water cooled ones. They moved to water cooling as tighter and tighter emissions, noise and fuel economy regulations were putting the pinch on air-cooling. That was the only reason they changed. Water cooling gives more power at high end, but that wasn't the reason to move to water.
@angelgjr19995 жыл бұрын
Alan B'Stard M P Air cooling doesn’t do much if it’s 110 degrees outside. And air cooling doesn’t do a lot in rear engine cars either. Water cooling is the safest bet.

I know a person who owns a 2014 s-class brand new from the dealership After about a year of light use and after a checkup, keep in mind that he regularly has it checked up in the dealership in the UAE. They gave him a receipt of around $22K for different repairs that he had to make and the parts he had to change. He then took that report and took it to a german specialized well reputable garage, and they fixed the issues for LESS THAN $2K!!!!! That is mostly because the dealership tends to replace parts instead of fixing/repairing them, at least in the UAE.

I do my own regular maintenance on my Cayman. I’ve never had to drop the engine. If I had to replace the headlight it’s not much more than any other modern sealed headlight unit. Parts are relatively easy to get online and at foreign car retailers. All the crap wrong with that car is b/c it has 145k miles, not b/c it’s a Porsche. Yes, some things are way more expensive partly just b/c they are a low volume mfg. but that’s true of any low volume car, there’s less parts made for repair so it will cost you. In 4 years I’ve only had to do regular oil changes, plugs, wipers etc., however, high performance tires wear out quick. That’s true of any sports car. Couldn’t disagree more on ownership of a Cayman. Have not experienced any “money pit” issues.

I had the opportunity to buy a 2003 911. The ones that came out with the defective camshaft bearing. It had 30k miles and had a blown engine . They wanted $3,000 for it. The body was immaculate. It was a blue convertible. Gorgeous car. Ended up walking out of the deal and a buddy of mine jumped on it. He thought he could rebuild the engine himself. When he opened the engine it was completely destroyed inside. The bearing broke Into a million pieces and they fell inside of the engine. It turned out to be an endless money pit. He sold the car after he pulled the engine out to another sucker for 6 grand. At least he made 3k for his troubles.

Scotty, yes, it takes a little more money for parts but typically not that much. The difference is working on it one’s self versus paying someone to work on it. Also it comes down to what you want to drive. Not everyone wants to drive a boring Celica nor an F150 pickup.... so yeah. People that can afford it choose something more performance oriented. and BTW the experience from a 986 or 987, or 997 Porsche is incomparable to any Celica or F150. Not even in the same universe.

You can DIY all basic maintenance on the Porsche Cayman. That cover in the back hatch area comes off and provides access to the top of the engine. The panel behind the seats is removed to gain access to the front of the engine. Pull the rear wheels and a liner panel to gain access to the heads/coil packs and spark plugs. Changing the oil is not that different than most other cars. Very affordable. The clutch, the IMS Bearing or some major catastrophe would be the only reasons to "drop the engine". One of the best kept secret mid-engine cars ever built.

Great info. This is EXACTLY like owning an airplane. If you think you are going to justify the thing by looking at a spreadsheet you are out of your mind. You buy and own it because you WANT it. Nothing else. Great video and discussion...especially the example of a 12 foot radiator hose....classic.

I had an '07 Cayman S... Bought it at 60k miles... Had it for 2 years as my daily driver... Traded it in at 80k miles (for a GTI) when we had a Baby... In 2 years, maintenance cost me about $3,000... $1,100 of which was replacing the Starter and battery because I let it sit for a month while I was out of town and died on me... That was the only issue I ever had with it.. Traded in for $3,500 less than my purchase price... So $3,500, plus $3,000 plus like $2,500 in sales tax ... So Net $9,000 to drive 20k miles on an 07 Cayman S... Not too bad really. About the same cost as a moderate lease option on a new car

If you want a bargain sports car that’s perfect for track and daily driving and give you a solid cool factor, you can go wrong with a C5 Corvette. Bullet proof little motors that pack more power than a standard cayman (like the one Scotty showed) and the torque is healthy. Plus I’ve seen them get pretty good gas mileage on the highway. V8, RWD, and a near perfect 50/50 weight distribution that weighs close to 3,200 pounds is a bargain when you can pick one up for $15k or $8k for a higher mileage one
@scottthompson58555 жыл бұрын
Owned an ‘06 987s. The S is NOT prone to IMS issues. Something to check, but NOT a big issue “in the s”. They are NOT difficult to service. You can get to the plugs and coil packs through the rear wheels. Remove them. Remove the fender liner. You are in. Behind the Seat is access to the serpentine belt. Remove the top cover to access the air filter. Bleeding brakes and pads is no harder than ANY car. Oil change is VERY easy. Sump plug under in rear. Back up on ramps and it is right there. Filter (in housing) also RIGHT there. This car has a buck and a half in mileage and it is running. Headliner/handle and door card are not expensive or hard to refurb. ANY car can need a windshield. Glass repair is not any different on a Por-sha...THAT is how you pronounce the name. Scottie doesn’t know ‘em so he rips ‘em. Whatever...I now own a 997 GTS. Best car I have ever experienced. Haters gonna hate. Ignorance is bliss. Keep ‘em take care of ‘em and they appreciate over time. A timeless design with a racing history and engineering excellence. Por-she: There is NO substitute.

Scotty finds a high mileage uncared for example and tells you the interior quality is crap. Well any car will look crap if it isn’t cared for! Not much wrong with these Porsche apart from its Achilles heel which is the IMS bearing but apart from that get a lowish miles example which has been well looked after and you won’t have much problems but clearly don’t buy one if you are a pauper!

Honestly Scotty, my Base Boxster is relatively simple compared to most modern cars. The engine and transmission were developed to be dropped more easily than any conventional design. Heck, my Z28 was a mid front engine and the windshield had to be removed to get the engine out. There are DIY YT channels that are able to pull the transmission out to replace the clutch on 911s and Boxsters. I wouldn't recommend any Porsche for areas with 90% straight roads, like Houston. But after three years of weekend driving my Boxster in the Smokies outside of DC, I've only changed fluids. Now it's no Corolla or Camry (had several of each) but many of the parts cost about the same online. And there's a reason for the parts that cost more, they're more expensive, as in higher quality parts. I actually don't recommend Porsches to anyone, hehehe. I tell them Miata is always the answer. I have an NA, It's zippy and fun, but it has a sporty economy car feel and build quality. People are always crowning the Miata as better than the Z3, maybe in the four cylinder version. But my 95 MX5 doesn't have most of the creature comforts OR performance of my 97 Z3 six cylinder: 203 ft/lbs, traction control, heated seats, nor the same feel, the Z3 is a premium car in comparison; and you know it when you drive it. I think all the newer cars are for the rich only: electric steering, computers and modules throughout, etc.! They're the money pits! I still prefer manual everything in a sports/sporty car.

My 1989 928 S4 is the Porsche equivalent of a couch. Fast, smooth, and it can handle very well in the right hands. It isn't cheap to maintain but it isn't hard or expensive to do most maintenance on the car. The engine can even stay in during a head gasket replacement. A timing belt job costs about the same in parts as my A3 TDI does for perspective. Still goes just fine with 215k miles on it with routine maintenance keeping it going. Just be sure to replace any pressurized rubber line over 15 years old. They are a liability and can set the car on fire if they burst like any old car.
