Looks like it’s dinged pretty good for one week. If the temps are cool, it’ll take longer to take effect like the other post emergents. Someone suggested mixing Tenacity and Etho together. Have you tried that? I’d like to.
@brianfolding402 жыл бұрын
Hello fellow North Carolinian! I'm in the WS triad area. As with any nasty weed like Poa, the best approach is from a pre emergent stand point. I'm sure that's why they recommend applying in the fall. Once this or any weed is up in the grass, it's much harder to get rid of. Come back in another week to see if you have any better killing.
@MrFergusonLawn2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brian, yea I'm fully aware of what you are saying. Poa is just a best in a cool season lawn, being we are not wanting to kill the cool season turf. We'll revisit Etho in the Fall and see how it performs then. Thank you sir!
@alokgondhalekar57572 жыл бұрын
Etho is primarily a preemergent with early post emergent activity on very young poa annua in fall before it gets established through winter period. The label and many university studies confirm that it works if and only if applied at right time in fall and for fescue only lawn - a follow up application in spring. The followup spring application should be avoided on KBG as it stunts it’s spring green up.

Thanks Alok. I mentioned this in the video, that it’s rated for Fall but we were just testing in spring to see if anything, what would happen. I hope to try it in Fall this year. Thanks.

Great video! But here's my question. I live on Long Island. From what I understand about poa annua, is that it germinates when the temperature drops below 70. Any pre-emergent should be put down around the end of August to control it. So if you use ETHO 4SC as a pre-emergent for poa, should you use it at the end of August as well. Jump in guys if I'm wrong.
@MrFergusonLawn2 жыл бұрын
It's rated as a pre and post emergent. That said though, for fescue it appears to be primarily for pre emergent only. So in the fall, yes, you'd apply at time of seeding. I believe it says you can do it at seeding and it won't affect the new seed. Not the case with Prodiamine however, which is why fescue lawns have that choice in Fall. With this, might be able to both seed and prevent poa.

My lawn is ruined! I trusted the landscaper to overseed it and I now have what looks like scattered spots of Rye or Poa. It grows 24 hours/day. I need a professional to help, I just do not know where to find reliable help in the Winston Salem Piedmont NC area. Some areas are so dense I will have to dig it up and resod. I do not wish to kill my sodded Fescue. Can anyone help?
@MrFergusonLawn9 ай бұрын
So the poa will die out eventually in the heat. Not much you can do about it right now. The best thing g to do is to maintain what you have til Fall: treat weeds & fertilize, the aerate and heavily seed fescue in September. This likely will help with 75% of your issue. Between now and then, do a soil test. See if your ph is right, between 6-7. If not, work on getting it right til fall seeding time. That’s my advice, as I have don’t it myself with amazing lawn years later.
@moneyb222 жыл бұрын
One thing I would suggest people do is compare this label to the Poa Constrictor label. Both products have 42% ethofumesate as the active ingredient by Aquatrols. Poa constrictor label seems more comprehensive and even suggests only do a spring application if you did applications in the fall. You will also see different recommendations in the number of applications despite them being the same active ingredient %. You can also look up studies on the usage of Ethofumesate and the efficacy after 1,2, & 3 applications. I did just the spring last year and saw little to no results. This year I did 2 applications in the fall and one in spring. I’ve had significantly less emergence of Poa this year. I also did a tank mix this year in spring with tenacity and Poa constrictor (ethofumesate)

As a fellow NC Resident, I know the struggle of POA... (and sure we are not alone...) I guess I've been lucky after my Reno a few years back. I've been the guy crawling around in my yard, pulling out by the roots every plant I can find, and BURNING them in my fire pit... my question is... do you have any concern killing in the spring when the seeds are in full blume... in your research, have you found if it also stops the seed head on the current plant from being able to germinate in the fall?
@MrFergusonLawn2 жыл бұрын
Hey David! I think the only 3 ways to really handle it is pluck it out the lawn as you said, have a super thick lawn to help choke it out, and lastly use Etho or pre emergent in Fall to stop it before it grows. We will see what happens in Fall, as I hope to begin to prevent it.

I’m dealing with some POA in my 20,000 ft2 lawn. I don’t think it’s as major as you had a couple years ago. If you had it to do over, would you still do the tenacity and overseed or would you do fall prodiamine for a few years to stop POA first and then overseed? My biggest problem is I have some areas in the lawn that are bare from an old dog kennel and I need to backfill a settled water line ditch that will need seeded also this fall. I was leaning forwards using tenacity this fall to suppress POA and try to get those areas started and then next year start the pre emergent battle. Your thoughts please?
@MrFergusonLawn2 жыл бұрын
I would do the same thing again. I would have no grass if I was to go fall Prodiamine. Each year I’ve had to overseed or have no grass. Summer is that hard where I am. So for me it’s an easy choice. This year however, we will try Etho 4 sc as we did a video recently, and overseed with that. Might be a better solution.

I just bought some anuew for my poa. It also says it is best to spray in the Fall to stop poa. I am assuming you need to spray in the fall to catch the poa before it goes to seed. I will be putting down prodiamine and anuew in the fall for control. I think it will be fine if I seed in Sept and spray in Nov.
@MrFergusonLawn2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but remember that the issue here is that poa is a cool season weed and fescue is cool season grass. It's when soil temps drop to around 70 and below that poa starts germinating, even if we can't see it. So while you may stop some, you may still see some. Hope that's not the case, but please keep us posted if it works out for you!
@Chrisbennett-k5h2 жыл бұрын
@@MrFergusonLawn you're right. I'll give it a shot and see what happens. I also ordered some 4Speed XT for the other weeds. Seemed like Speedzone did a good job. I just need to do a little cleanup. If the anuew stops the poa from sprouting seeds, I will be quite happy.

I have turf type tall fescue and if this hurts the grass then so be it. Everything is fixable if the lawn looks better then ever after. Just my opinion.
@all49252 жыл бұрын
Interesting… I’ve only used it in the fall so I’ve never seen the results of a spring treatment. There are a couple of conflicting things on the label. First, it’s the only herbicide that I’ve ever seen that lists a combination of fractions and percentages for minimum and maximum application rates. I’m sure it was just and oversight but I digress. What is even more interesting is that if you were to apply the minimum rates for tall fescue twice as the label suggests you can you would exceed the annual rate of 1.1. Today is the first time I’ve ever noticed the annual rate. Also, the label states “RightLine ETHO 4 SC has both preemergent and early (two-leaf stage) postemergence activity and works best in programs emphasizing both approaches.” It also states that works as a post emergent for poa. Either way I know that it does reduce the amount of poa when used in the fall. I guess time will tell if it works in the springtime.

Not sure why etho 4sc has such low yearly rates. I use poa constrictor also has 42%ethofumesate and also has 4 lbs ai per gallon. Except there rates are .75 -1.5 on tttf 2-3 apps in the fall. Good luck don't give up.on it .I would do 2 apps at .55 oz per k in the fall to keep it at the 1.1 oz. rate . Important fall is the time you need to treat.

Seeded with tttf at seeding I did a app of poa constrictor with tenacity 30 days later did a second app. They say 2-3 apps in the fall. But only if your overseeding withh tttf. I believe perennial rye has a window of 2-3 weeks before seeding and after germination, and kbg has a window of 6 weeks before and after. I don't have a single piece of poa In my property.
