Im from the same town as Granger. When I was a kid my dad told me this story. He knew the guy and his family. His sister was my brother’s school teacher, and she was also eccentric. He actually was very well known and popular in the community and taught teen age boys mechanics at his home. He was also well known at Bob’s Grill and there are machines he built in our local museum. Everyone that I’ve talked to that knew him believes he really believed he was going to be with aliens, and blew himself up. This is a Mystery I don’t know will ever be solved, but it’s sure interesting. Thanks for making a video about it!

I identify somewhat with Granger's magical thinking. When I was 8 I was living in an abusive environment, not allowed to leave the sitter's backyard. I developed a fantasy that the Star Ship Enterprise would beam me up, that I would be given a uniform and a phaser, and trek around the galaxy saving damsels in distress. This fantasy was a coping mechanism. When I was 9, I got an Etch-A-Sketch for Christmas. I was so convinced it was a tele-transporter, that I stood on top of it, shouting "Beam me up!" and when nothing happened, I stomped on it (unintentionally), shattering the Etch-A-Sketch. However, what puzzles me is that Granger was raised in a quite different, more supportive environment. For instance, he was allowed to rebuild engines, cars, airplanes, and locomotives. It doesn't strike me as a spirit killing environment, and with that I can only look from afar at his relative good fortune. I can't understand that his life was so bad that he would A) Need an escape fantasy, as I did, or B) want to kill himself.

This is a man who tethered 43 weather balloons to his lawn chair in July 1982 with some beer, sandwiches, a camera, and a parachute, and took a 45 minute flight. He caused a blackout on his descent and was arrested for his shenanigan. He later ended his own life in 1993.

A long time ago I was doing some unrelated research which led me to book some time viewing old local newspapers from the 1960's on microfiche. There was an article detailing the story of a US military helicopter pilot who was killed in combat in S.E.A. The story was a follow on to his obituary. He had been interviewed by a journalist from the local paper sometime before his death as he actually was a Canadian citizen, a member of a local Indian tribe. It was revealed that the courageous man had spent $ to get formal instruction in piloting rotary wing aircraft in hopes of increasing his chances of being recruited by the RCAF for the MOC of helicopter pilot. He was bluntly told due to his non white / non country club status, there was no way in hell he would be recruited as such. So instead he was recruited by the US military, and was allowed to follow his dreams come what may. He served with distinction and was killed in the intense fighting. A significant contingent from the US military attended his funeral on his treaty territory, & the funeral was carried out with full military honours - by representatives of the United States military. Granger Taylor - like Troy Hurtubise did not conform to the mediocre standards expected of Canadians. They had issues? Certainly. What does this cold intolerance of individualism and iron willed excellence say about our often mediocre domestic society? Imo it sheds needed light on an ugly aspect of Cdn. society, that should have its head shoved underwater when ever it appears. Another old folk song which comes to mind in this case is Ode to Billy Joe by Bobbie Gentry. Granger Taylor's legacy deserves a long delayed softness, he should be remembered with nostalgia, with forbearance and admiration of his stellar accomplishments in his chosen field.

That is a very, very said tale of a brilliant and industrious gentleman that simply could not relate to others. I feel that it was extreme loneliness that drove his hand to taking his own life. Nonetheless, he knew suicide would not be acceptable to his family, so he did it in the most secretive way that he could. Again, this was heartbreaking.

I'm not hearing any evidence that he WASN'T beamed away by aliens. I think the jury is still out on this one. 🛸🐄

I feel bad for Granger. Wouldn’t it be nice if he did start a new life somewhere else for his own sake.

Granger sounds like an NPC from Fallout or GTA that has a whacky side quest for you.

A wood burning stove in an alien spacecraft-themed clubhouse sounds like a fantastic idea! Gets cold in outer space. Hope he added some lava lamps and fluffy rugs for his acid trips there haha :D

This idea of leaving planet Earth with an alien spaceship reminds me of the Heaven's Gate suicides.

He would have been 74 this year if he had chosen to remain on Earth. For a 42-month voyage traveling at 99.9% the speed of light, it's probable that he would return approximately in the year 2060. This is assuming a nearly constant rate of travel. If any pauses were taken for sightseeing, he would be returning sooner.

Hi Dr. Grand🏁e. He was fortunate that he had parents to let him play around like that instead of being a grown man he decided to go with the lost boys. ❤
