The Issue with Dream Stans (important)

The toxic behavior of many Dream Stans towards content creators (myself included) is something that has gone unchecked for too long.
I really want to highlight important issues with this commentary on how Dream Stans (not all) have been allowed to harass other CCs with little to no reason.
As much as the thumbnail and title says, do not take this as an attack on the Dream fandom or Dream himself. That is not the intention. Period.

honestly, I believe that if dreams rise to sucess wasn't as fast he wouldn't be going through these problems, but not in the sense he doesn't deserve it, like think about how many people got popular quick, and got some of the most toxic people inside of their communites. Not saying dream didn't deserve anything. But these stans are so annoying, like the compilation channels, completely milk these stans by putting, "10000 IQ DREAM PLAYS #4" like those videos, are the roots to the stans, they believe dream is the only good minecraft player.

Let’s face it tho, ALL communities are having issues with toxic people. Hell, it’s not just mc, it’s everywhere. Fandoms are getting worse. The art community is terrible. Does it just seem to be getting worse and worse and honestly? We need to talk about this. We need to start calling toxic people out. It’s not okay, never was and never will be. As a big dream *fan* , I often get generalized as a *stan* . No, I am not a stan and you should never call yourself or others a stan without actually being one. The original term for that is an over obsessive *stalker* fan who would die for the content creator, which is absurd. Even if im not a dream fan i do agree. Not every dream fan needs to praise him or look at him as a god. It is normal to support content creators without being named a stan or cringe. Dream stans are part of the reasons I stopped watching Dream’s streams. I rarely ever type in chat but after seeing them I’ve stopped all together. They need to chill out so much. Like I know that Dreams streams always made me laugh and smile but now that they’re toxic I’v stopped watching. This is why I normally only watch Technoblade and Yourpalross, cause they can sorta hold their chat in line and they aren’t very toxic. I did want to become a Minecraft youtuber but now that the toxicity is becoming worse I’m not sure i want to anymore.

Usually the stans(toxic fans) depends on how you act and how you keep them in line. The more fans you have the more harder it is to control them. And by telling the older fans(example if you have like quite older/mature audience) they will also be able to control the newer(aka the younger/immature) ones aswell. The big problem with stans is that they view personalities as just that. Personalities. They don't see people, they don't see a face, they don't see flaws or mistakes or immorality in an individual, which everyone at least have a little bit of. They see the best, and *only* the best, of a person. There are also stans that only see the runs as a story, a piece of fiction, a tall tale. Not an Actual thing that happened. That means they take it a *lot* more seriously than just a nice run. Toxicity comes from an angle that enables the audience to view the person as a fictional character, rather than an actual person. The Reason we are talking about Dream instead of, say Sapnap, is because Dream has been painted as the main character in his own story. To Stans, Dream is to Minecraft as Frodo is to the Lord of the Rings. Dream is the main character in his own story. So as soon as one flaw comes to light, and tarnishes an otherwise "flawless" image of Dream, Stans view him as a failure. a Bad story. He was a villan this whole time.

I really enjoyed the analogy of heroes v. villains. It makes complete sense. If Dream were to own up to mistakes, it could potentially damage his image amongst his fandom. But in all honesty, if he doesn't address the issues surrounding his channel, the outsiders will end up destroying Dream anyways. He has a core fanbase that will always support him, a majority of his subscribers are just there for the content, not the controversy. I reckon if he wants to save himself from further controversy, he needs to address himself soon. But thats my take.

This is absolutely true. I follow Dream on twitter ever since January and the amount of time I've seen him being dragged by minecraft stans is ridiculous. They constantly monitor Dream for every action he does and they call him out for the tiniest of "mistakes" he can possibly do, even if they're not actually mistakes at all. They create unnecessary drama because they put Dream in such a high pedestal and they attack him if he didn't meet their perfect standards.

Viewing certain videos, such as the Speedrunner Vs Hunters videos, like you would a storybook makes them easier to process, and makes the story much more dynamic and leaves it up to interpretation. Viewing them like a movie is actually one of the main reasons the animatics (especially SAD-ists) exist. They paint a more story-like picture of videos like the Dream SMP. "But characters in books and movies have flaws!" Yes, that's true, and it can very easily be said about characters in the Dream SMP; TommyInnit has sociopathic and narccisistic tendencies, Wilbur Soot is a wounded man driven to insanity at the destruction of his kingdom, GeorgeNotFound is antagonistic and destructive, etc, etc. The Problem is that these traits are part of the *character*, not the *actual person* behind the screen. Yes, JSchlatt can seem tyrannical in his management of Manburg, but outside of the server, he is a relatively sensible person. Yes, TommyInnit may seem very self-absorbed, but he has reiterated that he supports LGBTQ+ multiple times, and seems to sincerely care about Tubbo as a friend and ally. The Problem here is with the bridge between Fiction and Reality. If you can't differentiate between the Persona and the Person, you are gonna have serious problems.

Hi, Dream stan here. I just want to say that I fully agree with you. I am actually biased (against my true beliefs) because of some personal reasons and on twitter (the notorious place for all the toxicity everyone knows) I cannot disclose my real opinions on issues like this one. Your point about not knowing what's going on in someone's life and what could such a message (death threats) do to them is so valid and true, I fully agree, so well said. Since I joined the commmunity (as we call it on Twitter: "dreamteam twitter") I have noticed the toxicity grow and I found a number of reasons, upon researching. 1. As you mentioned, the pretending it doesn't exist. People do not like to address such issues (for most "big" accounts on twitter - meaning with a huge following, their pages are for them "safe spaces" and they would rather not get involved in drama) when it clear that most of the times it's just them not being willing to get on Dream's bad side or lose followers. This goes to my 2nd point and maybe the most important: *Dream's attitude.* Dream is.... stubborn, very stubborn, from what I've noticed. I do think he is a pleasant person, a brilliant creator and sometimes a soft and emotional friend, but about this specific issue, I think most can agree he has been handling it... not in the right way. He has been denying it exists, and rather closing eyes to the excessive harassment creators in the MC community get. I myself have actually used the argument "it's just the loud minority, stop generalising stans!" which is true per se, but that doesn't mean the wild hate with no control doesn't have huge consequences. And yes, he is not responsible for the people who hate under his name, he did tweet to not send hate, but I really think saying it more often (considering the overall loud voice of the toxic individuals) would make a huge difference. He is under quite some pressure, he gets targeted from left and right so I think accusing him with a negative attitude will not improve the situation. He needs to sympathise with other creators and realise the unfortunate reality, I will see what I can do as his fan, but unfortunately the voices of those who do not idolise him in every way get burried. If some creators could come together and tweet, VC and explain him the situation calmly, behind the scenes, maybe the issue could be solved. I cannot keep defending him if I see so many people suffering because of his silence and because it doesn't affect him or his friends personally... Because let me tell you, the toxic stans absolutely do NOT listen to outsiders, so I think Dream has to address this in order to, as you said, remove some of the hate peacefully. I am sorry you and other creators have to go through something like this. (I usually tend to skip these videos with tags about dream stans because they tend to be quite exaggerated, but yours is very well made, with incredible points and you managed to keep it civilised and respectful. I feel the biggest problem with Dream fans (or specifically stans) is idolization. Idolizing doesn’t just affect other people, but even Dream himself. The weekly cancelling, sexualized shipping, and pressure put on his “1000 iq image” shoved up people’s faces. Pressuring him to do his best every time, and forcing it on other people can severely have an effect on the future of their community, whether Dream might go to an unneeded length or several people finally dropping out due to the cancelling.

I'm a Dream fan but I do not: Ship people that are in Dreams videos or outside of his video's. I do not harass other people that get inspired by Dreams manhunts. I do not harass others that do about the same videos as Dream. I do not try to force Dream to show his face when he has said multiple times he doesn't feel comfortable showing it yet. (I was on a one of the championship live streams and alot of people were spamming, "FACE REVEAL!" and me and a few others were telling them to stop.) I do not act rude to others because I'm to scared to even say anything to anyone. And I only watch Dreams video's because I find his videos funny and amazing because he always has a new idea to win and the Dream SMP because I find everything that is going on crazy and amazing. I hope other Dream Fan's can fix this problem because it is getting to the point where this is being talked about A LOT. Have a good day!

Well, most of them probably ARE K-pop stans. A while back on his channel, at around 2 million subs, Dream jokingly got his fanbase to trend #DreamIsOverParty on twitter. Apparently there was some K-pop group or performer named Dream, so it triggered the involvement of the k-pop community. Once the whole thing blew over and k-pop stans realized that the “Dream” in question was from mcyt, a lot of them started getting involved with Dream and his fanbase. That’s what likely caused his enormous spikes in growth, and also likely why we can see trends of k-pop stan culture in mcyt culture, from the streaming to the cancelling to the fantasizing, etc.

In dreams defense, he has addressed this a couple of times. If you remember poofles (Preston and Woofles) they really didn't care either and even played it up he saying he doesn't mind the whole dreamnotfound thing is no different the only difference here is that his fanbase is toxic about other things too making it seem worse by association. Generally speaking his fandom has little to do with him he really just provides family-friendly content and runs a smp. Look do you ask toby fox to stop undertake fans from doing well a lot of stuff early on (we got better but still) or sega to stop sonic fans no you don't. Even when individuals try to address toxic community it rarely works honestly I can think of only one time this worked even a little was Alpharad Plus and that took a literal rebrand. I personally believe you are being quite unreasonable in implying dream is somehow responsible for what a small group of his fans do. Also yes it is a small group .1% of 10 million is still 10,000 people.

I'm very glad this video was made because one of the issues I think not enough people are discussing in this whole stan situation is how the stans toxic behavior is affecting other content creators not just the people within the Dream Team. All of the discussion is really just focused on the weird shipping and while that part of the behavior should be talked about, I feel like this is a much more prevalent issue. I personally don't think Dream should take responsibility for it, but I do think he should call these people out and tell them to stop. At least make an effort. It's not his fault that his fanbase is being so shitty, but if it goes on for too long without Dream doing ANYTHING, it will become harder to say "it's not his fault." The best youtubers can do is call out these 'fans', shun them, and tell them to stop. my take on the dream stans issue is they're making so many hate comments and being all around toxic, but for me there's another thing that's bothering me Why didn't Dream never addressed this situation at all?! I mean I know that dream's fanbase is really big and hard to control but he doesn't say anything about the drama, or telling them to stop, in fact, these toxic stans are what control his actions, like some time ago he said he stopping streaming minecraft on twitch because some people say he cheated on his speedruns and that one time when on the dream smp when the chat attacked jschlatt for no reason and because of that reaction from the chat dream decided to ban him for some reason and then explaining later on was because he wanted the dream smp to not have people he doesn't know or have too many players in the smp, which noe there are many people on his server now and some people he didn't get to know all too much from what I've seen Idk man, its just weird that dream isn't doing anything about this, not saying he doesn't do it on purpose but it is possible. So uh yeah, this is what I think, I just feel like dream isn't in the 100% in the clear from the issue

My Theory where all of the Dream Stans came from is Tiktok. Tiktok has multiple communitys and one of the most annoying, retarded, snowflake, and toxic of a community is called alt girls which are mainly little white girls (they get offended for other groups of people like black people and hispanics when someone makes a joke about them and get offended for them even its not even offensive or its just Dark Humor, they supoort the lgbtq people or apart of them). So basically some of Dream's normal fans reuploads Dream's 200 iq moves to Tiktok and i assume that the alt girls watched it and found it interesting and then became fans of dream and created the Dream Stans known Today.
