As a VFX artist myself, something that's not often reported is that nowadays, film productions do not really have an R & D phase anymore. Before the dawn of VFX, a lot of the front end of the pre-production was dedicated to how they could get effects right, as most of the time they'd be shooting them in-camera, so they had to get it right. Now, because it's so easy to change things in a computer, a good chunk of the R & D phase is removed and pushed into post-production, where they try to fix the issues that side. The trade-off, of course, is that artists can be left to flounder, as the directors, supervisors, producers and clients are all trying to put their two cents in and offer up conflicting opinions on what they want to see. It is not uncommon to go round the houses on a shot for months, to only end up back where you started, as both no-one can agree on what they want, and they just run out of time, which is why some shots can look like really rushed. Obviously, this is just a generalisation. Not every show is like this, but it is common. I maintain they need to dedicate more time to R & D in the pre-production side, and directors and clients need to go on a VFX crash course to better understand how it all works. Sincerely, a very tired VFX artist.

@@themadtitan7603 while I agree that Disney should be more active supporting artists...it's a bit of a disingenuous take. The headlines were all Disney this Disney that, and morally they're the ones making the millions off the work of artists they should be doing better, but practically there's going to be people in the middle. And if you slog through the articles with the details, it's the companies subcontracted by Disney treating their workers badly that were being complained about. Disney doesn't handle the day to day about anything but they do accept promises made on behalf of the artists. Then Disney has an unrealistic or impossible end date but one that was sold to them and no one is going to say "actually Disney my team is working around the clock and we can't meet deadlines". The system needs to work better and Disney profiting off of the flaws does make them complicit but unless they start micromanaging everyone, which I doubt anyone wants, change is going to have to start further down the ladder.

I was wondering if this show had a development phase where they tried out different ways to do the She-Hulk form. I enjoyed Tatiana Maslany, but I wonder if they even considered casting a 6 ft 7 wrestler, have her be green all the time cause she liked it, and did the skinny Steve Rogers thing from time to time. The parody of the Bixby/Ferrigno show made me think casting someone as She-Hulk and painting her green could have been better and led to less crunch.

I think that's the problem with a lot of Marvel (and superhero) action scenes and fight-matchups in general: they're usually too symmetrical. It's not interesting seeing two strong punchy bois try and punch harder than the other, but it IS really entertaining to see what a speedster is like against a telepath etc etc. Take the Spider-Man PS4(/5) game for example: all the boss fights are against someone with a completely different skillset, so it becomes about cleverly using the tools you have to solve a problem. You can't punch Rhino into submission, so you have to wear him out and trick him into using his momentum badly. I wish the films would recognise this a bit more. I think the best they have was the end battle in Infinity War, where you got to see like six different heroes all trying to use their different tools and skills on Titan to bring down Thanos, who is essentially a giant, clever tank.

And somehow during the production of these re-enactments they can control the events unfolding in the realities they’re depicting? Also, and maybe more importantly, in the Marvel-Studios-having dimension in the show, there’s a robot instead of or as well as the human Kevin Feige (based on what we’ve seen in the show, and on the assumption that the K.E.V.I.N bot as portrayed doesn’t exist in our dimension), and She-Hulk still comments to a camera, which means she’s using her ability to break the 4th Wall not just to communicate with us, but freely navigate the multiverse as depicted in the MCU.

Great video! I think the point of having the '80s homage in the finale was twofold: First, after having been working all season long to distance herself from the age-old hulk smash stereotype, in episode 8 she completely lost control (being coerced into doing so), and was now waking up in prison having been reduced to the very iconic rage-fueled uncontrollable stereotype from a different era... she had been reduced to something she wasn't... and Second, to a lesser degree, having such an out-of-nowhere 4th wall break fun homage helps subtly prepare audiences to be able to swallow the upcoming BIG 4th wall break at the end of that final episode. The first one doesn't seem to have any consequences, but it serves to kind of inoculate audiences, get their tolerance built up for the upcoming serving of meta-lunacy.

I'm still not sure how I felt about this. I wanted to like it but it was a bit meh. The middle of the series felt like it was a bit lost. And the end I thought started off clever but went a bit far and I started to just check out. Then I kinda wondered if I coukd take it seriously if they didn't seem to be. I could never get on with Daredevils new costume. Hated the yellow look in the comics too. And I wasn't ready for Charlie Cox's new lighter goofier portrayal of Matt Murdoch.

I have to point out to our Gr8 M8 Cult Leaders, that the reason they chose to play the old, INCREDIBLE HULK remake-intro was due to the fact that in the prior episode, She Hulk had a public, raging outburst from a legit cause. However, to the people in the show, it looked like she was raging because she is “a hulk and that’s what hulks do.” So that’s how the public in the show saw her, a Savage She-Hulk. Keep up Grates coming, M8’s!

The resolution of the last episode felt a little too deus ex machina for me. I wish that after Kevin, they’d done a rewind and actually showed how Jen solved the issue in a preferable way rather than flashing forward to everything being resolved. Other than that (and the hit/miss CGI) I thought the show was fairly charming and entertaining. Hope they do a season 2.
@Whiteythereaper2 жыл бұрын
The deus ex machina is the joke, Jen wanted a happy ending that transitioned the cheapest way possible
@Jehayland2 жыл бұрын
@@Whiteythereaper I totally get that part, but the heart of the joke was that she wanted an ending that was more focused on her journey and struggle and not a bunch of ppl coming in to save her with big spectacle. We never got to see her actually resolve her stakes. They erased the messiness but didn’t replace it with anything; they just jumped to the denouement. I feel like the joke would have landed better if we got to then see Jen resolve her stakes in a way that felt personal to her. Instead we didn’t get to see her resolve anything at all (apart from chatting with Kevin). It’s a minor quibble, and the show is still good on the whole. I just think Jen having more agency within her world (rather than outside of the “4th wall”) in the finale would have made it even better.

I would agree with you, and them, on more than I disagree. However, I could have told you 4 months ago how they would review this show. Despite all of their work, when it comes to a specific area, they will not cut into it out of either fear of backlash or being cut off. It doesn't surprise me, for example, why you won't find any current comments by them on the Amazon nightmare of Rings of Power or even going back in the time machine any after the fact addressment of Ghost in the Shell beyond the pre-production video. They are very very careful to avoid any objectively bad work which has female leads or is in the ideological sphere they subscribe. That's cool. I don't mind it, and I still watch a lot of their content because it is entertaining and insightful at times. However, I would never rely on their opinions as a singular "truth" as it were. She-Hulk and their real lack of criticism is exactly why for example. And now, a short time later, that it was openly stated they did a shit job with the show just to antagonize people makes it even worse. In that case, I'm not sure what is worse, the fact that it essentially validates all of the criticism or invalidates all of the supporters.

I had a blast watching this series but it had issues for me and all those issues boil down to one single issue: the show didn't really have enough time to flesh anything out. I felt like I was watching a recap or a best bits video of a longer, really great She Hulk show. Like some fan on KZbin took all their favorite clips and made a channel dedicated to it. And the ending implies the fault is the studio wanting them to shoe horn in a bunch of stuff they never wanted to include, like a blood plot or Hulk's Sakaar introduction, while also giving them only 9 half hour episodes, which is less than half the time their other tv shows got. So the writers just made a show that ending up being them telling the audience THEY WON'T LET US MAKE THE SHOW WE WANTED the entire time. Like I said, I enjoyed watching and there were things I loved. Some people hated that Matt was out of the suit in the last episode, but I loved to see him happily pretending he was her boyfriend at the bbq. I loved the supporting cast and I especially loved the (very little) actually lawyering we got. I wanted more and I want more. I hope they get a season 2 and I hope it's longer. I keep hearing critics yell about how these series are too long and the truth is that this is what happens when things are shortened when they either shouldn't or don't have to be. There was not enough time for them to do anything substantial in this series and it's an absolute shame because what we got was so fun. It was a "fun lawyer show" but we got maybe 2 episodes of actual lawyering, and we spend 5 episodes talking about her personal life, 2 of which are absolute filler and could be taken out. And it wouldn't feel that way if the episodes were longer or there were more of them. I think there is a major disconnect there between critics and most audience members, because the only people I hear asking for shorter seasons/episodes are critics, and I think it's because of the amount of media they are forced to consume. Most audience members are picky and have the time to dedicate to a 10-15 episode story arch, whereas critics feel compelled to watch everything because it's their job and that would get absolutely overwhelming. So anytime a professional film critic whines about episodes or seasons being too long, I honestly raise an eyebrow and dismiss it. For the people these studios make money off of (the audience, not the critics), it's not actually applicable. Anyway, loved the show despite obvious, fixable flaws. Want more. Season 2 please. More episodes please.

Funny thing about your closing comment: The Flash actually ran through the Speed-Force once for so long and far and such powerful velocity that he literally disappeared from DC Comics for a short time, and in that meantime, Marvel Comics was having a race between all its speedsters--Wizz, Quicksilver, etc. and mid-race someone erupted into it out of nowhere like an explosive thunder shock and swept the competition easily without even trying. He came to, dazed, confused, wearing what was left of some red pants and yellow boots, and unsure of what was going on or his name, calling himself "Burried Alien" uncertainly. The judges and other runners congratulated him, as the host asked him how it felt to know he was now the "Fastest man alive"? He responded saying "It feels...right." He soon zoomed himself out of there and was never seen again. He basically spent a few months surviving on the pure energy of the Speed-Forece, and literally broke into another multiverse and back.

I liked the 4th wall break, I just wished they didn't take away the entirety of the stakes. They sort of just "Bippity Boppity Boo" all the struggles, making me question the whole point of the season. Why should we care about this season and all the things that happened in it if we don't even see the climax play out? We just cut to Happily Ever After and we don't even see She-Hulk finally use her powers to their full potential. I understand that this was supposed to be a Sitcom, but aren't sitcoms supposed to be consistently funny? This whole season sort of felt like a waste of time
@jaxr29582 жыл бұрын
I think we did see the climax play out. It was never about a bad guy it was about She Hulk existing. Massive stakes, she was sexually assaulted, framed, arrested, discriminated against for having powers the climax was her remaining true to herself and gaining a little wisdom. You could argue you didn't see She Hulk use her full powers, you saw Jen use hers. I would have liked to see Hulk King and Josh in jail charged with conspiracy to sexual assault. Also with many sit-coms often in the first season it can take a while to get warmed up while we all get invested .

I think the classic redone intro being at the beginning of the last episode made sense in a couple ways. 1. Hulk up until the MCU has been mostly portrayed as a "Monster" in film and TV, in this moment in she hulk she has just had her first public rage hulk moment, and the public and justice dept are seeing her as a monster. (Side note i also think this brilliantly ties back what bruce was warning about in the first episode) 2. I may be speaking for myself, but watching an intro for a super hero show always got me hyped, like in a sense of "Oh wow, the hero is gonna hero lets gooo", which then contrasts with the immediate next shot of her in the same cell blonsky was in.

The little podcast where the one writer who basically said she threw a huge tantrum and quit (but came back because her friend pleaded with Feige and I guess he didn't want to be ousted as a misogynist) over the K.E.V.I.N robot having a ball cap (which Feige didn't want because it didn't make any logical sense at all, like much of the series) basically summed up why I had issues with this show. If they had focused on the show making sense, it would have been fine to me. They can make whoever the enemy, they can poke fun at whatever they want like every other show does, I don't care...the issue was always the moments where they tried to show how much better she was/the plot just not making sense of why they went from point A to point B so quickly. If they went after writers who have shown they can write stories, this would have been a hit (even with the overdone jokes/cliché moments that Hollywood has been using for the last 8 years or so).

Yeah, I really enjoyed the show. It's a sitcom, it's not the best sitcom, but it's also far from the worst. The Finale is easily the hardest pill to swallow with the show though because they intentionally made a mess so that She-Hulk could break into the writer's room, but then the fixes she provided felt only slightly less messy. I would have liked to have seen her encounter Intelligencia a bit more head on, I don't need superpowered Todd, but you know, there's still a lab out there with her blood, right? There's still things that need to be resolved or could have been better resolved in the Finale in my opinion. On the whole though, I liked the show. It's far better than the most vocal critics are saying and that unfortunately skews the perspectives of people that haven't watched it. I loved how they were making fun of all the people that have had problems with more female lead stories in the MCU (the quality of those products is up to personal preference) because now all the people getting mad are just exemplifying how outrageous their claims are. If the show's just not for you, that's fine, but hatewatching something isn't healthy. It's probably not healthy to gobble up every piece of media like I'm doing either, but I'm having fun more often than not.
