I was a Flight Attendant for United in the 80's and 90's. I flew this same route out of Denver the next morning. I was traumatized but continued flying for another 10 years. We were told it was a heavy wind sheer that brought 585 down
@Tsheed12 жыл бұрын
It was a hard-over rudder issue. That happened on the couple other flights on the Boeing B737 luckily one didn't crash so they was finally able to figure out what have happened
@HirokaAkita2 жыл бұрын
Cause of the crash: *UNDETERMINED* . Yes, that was one of the only "undetermined" FAA cases. Several years later, thanks to an aircraft that barely survived unharmed those sudden rolls, it was revealed that the servo valve which controls the -tail's rudder- ailerons, in extreme temperature conditions (to be specific, thermal shocks), could get jammed, or even worse, inverse their inputs. _Yes people, that means left became right and right became left._

As I recall this was due to a malfunctioning flight surface servo that jammed the rudder hard over. Nothing the pilots could have done.
@MrSuzuki11872 жыл бұрын
It was caused by a rotor wind on the lee side of the front range, not a rudder hard over. The rotor rolled the airplane upside down at about 1,000 feet above the ground which was impossible to recover from. I flew this exact 737, airplane #1299 (UAL number, not the N number), on Flight 585, DEN-COS one week before this accident. It was our newest and cleanest B-737-200, and it was my favorite one to fly at United where I was a pilot from 1986-2015. I was a pilot on United's 737-200 fleet for 10 years and the other pilots in this fleet all believed it was a rotor wind, aka an invisible horizontal tornado, a phenomenon unique to the front range of the Rockies. It was invisible due to the dryness of the air, but would occasionally be visible for a brief time, which was the evidence proving it was a rotor wind, not the rudder.

So high winds like this can just bring planes down? It’s just luck of the draw?
@impossible98123 Жыл бұрын
That is wrong. It was a servo failure that caused a hard over and reversal. Look it up.

Excerpt from the NTSB report: "3.2 Probably Cause. The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of the United Airlines flight 585 accident was a loss of control of the airplane resulting from the movement of the rudder surface to its blowdown limit. The rudder surface most likely deflected in a direction opposite to that commanded by the pilots as a result of a jam of the main rudder power control unit servo valve secondary slide to the servo valve housing offset from its neutral position and overtravel of the primary slide" (p. 139).

it wasnt a problem with turbulence but it was a problem with rudder control system basically a technical eror
