Thank you so much Alina for the lovely video introduction to sights around Perm city. Geography and history are often neglected subjects in modern education. Travel blogs like yours help to remedy that and to lessen prejudices. Matters of taste may differ (- I too don’t care so much for modern art), but it’s important to recognize our common humanity and to learn to live together in peace and cooperation, regardless of the past. Before the 12th century northern European Russia was predominantly inhabited by Finno-Ugrian peoples. The name of today’s Perm city seems to go back to names applied to the huge region stretching from the White Sea area to the Ural mountains. In the west the Veps people called it Pera ma (compare Finnish Perämaa), both meaning hinterland. Viking raiders after sable furs, etc. called the territory Bjarm. In later historical documents traces of the name are seen in variants (like Perem) referring to eastern swathes of that territory. In 1505 the state of Perm the Great (Perm' Velikaya) and its capital at Cherdyn was annexed by Muscovy. In 1723 the present city of Perm was founded in Permian lands. Today Perm city is the administrative center of Russia’s Perm region (krai), apparently also a significant contributor in industry, science and arts. Cheers!

When it comes to contemporary art it's important to know that much of it is anti-market based. Meaning, it is not meant to sell or be used as an investment vehicle for the rich. That is why it can be so elusive, both physically in its presence and abstractly in its meaning.

Very nice video, you come across as a very pleasant personality that would find something of interest anywhere. Maybe it is your soft speaking voice but I could listen all day. I have been to Perm once and did not explore outside of it much, I was on my way to another destination Kazan, and Nizhny Novgorod. Kazan is really beautiful and worth the trip alone. I used to explore a lot more of Russia but in recent years mostly stick around my adopted home of St Petersburg. I moved from San Francisco area(Marin country) 20 years ago and have loved every minute of it. It is much cheaper to live in Russia and so many services that one does not have to work that much to live and travel a lot. I never liked Moscow that much until about 10 years ago when the new Governor took office and has been turning it into one of the best quality of life cities in Europe, amazing how much more livable it is than other large cities. But, St Petersburg is probably the easiest place I have been(91 countries so far) with great access to culture, great dining, 354 museums, galleries, cathedral museums, palaces, 500 parks, 44 islands, 450 bridges, with a laid back relaxed elegance where it is easy to meet people. It is also the most educated city in the most educated country in the world. Far East Russia is developing quickly so would be good to see that region in its natural form if you are going on the northern Trans Sibrian. If you get up to St Petersburg and need a private guide let me know, in the summer it can get crowded in areas which are in guide books but all those areas not promoted, are free of crowds. Out of hundreds, visitors all want to see the same 8-9 museums and palaces. But next door might be something just as great but few. if any. visitors. The best time is fall and winter to avoid crowds but have even greater access to great ballet, opera, museums, etc

Oh yes baby!

Just a couple of interesting things about Perm, where was born & started his career Sergey Diaghilev, a rich businessman of the region and founder of the world famous "Ballets Russes" in France & Monte Carlo. Perm has its own Opera & ballet Theater. The renown "MusicAeterna" symph. orchestra was founded in Perm by Teodor Currentzís, a greek-russian conductor, who immigrated to Russia from Athens 30 years ago & studied in St. Petersburg. Nowadays, he is considered as one of the rostrum stars all over Russia & Europe.

that piece of art at 12:44 looks to me as though it's representing Jung's idea of individuation with the Ego on the top, Self in the middle and the Shadow at the bottom. The colour schemes beautifully depict those elements also to my eyes

Wow, look what KZbin recommended!) I see you haven’t been to our most beautiful and historically preserved street... and that’s okay but for me as a situational tour guide seems unfortunate. I think you’d enjoy perm state gallery - honestly one of my favourite places in perm, it has quite a collection of more classical pieces. As for Permm (museum of contemporary art), I think, modern art requires commentary. The more abstract art gets - the more it begins to be textual (does that make sense?)) In other words, I vote for a second chance for Perm!
