To give Kuvira some credit, you have to remember how bad things were under the tyranny of the earth kingdom. And the subsequent fall into anarchy when the monarchy fell made things worse. Kuvira sees the conflict between the old authoritarian regime and the current lawless citizenry, and aims to solve that conflict by introducing her own totalitarianism, which eliminates the class warfare and brings back stability.

It's also worth noting that she's *right* about Suyin. The nation, an entire continent, has fallen into bloody chaos and she has the one city-state that can act as a rallying point and center for re-stabilizing. And she just...doesn't do anything about it. Because she didn't want power? Okay, then *give it up* after you succeed or ensure someone has oversight over you. Don't turn your back on thousands of people. EDIT: pre-emptively cannot emphasize enough that Kuvira is wrong on almost everything else beyond the crown prince sucking.

@@campbell91988No I mean you're completely right. I didn't get that in the convo with suyin either where they were taking her side for coming out of nowhere and trying to talk to her. Like, no I'm sorry, you don't get to do absolutely nothing for at least 20 years and then all of a sudden when someone you don't like has taken it upon herself to do something for people, you wanna get involved in world affairs lol. And I mean honestly aside from Kuvira being hella extreme, I'm sure the people in the lower ring were actually very grateful to her for helping them out and giving them some sort of support and stability where not only the Earth Queen, but also the Earth King from ATLA let the people in the lower ring rot away.

@@heinrichagrippa5681 But that's the thing Toph IS NOT overly critical because THAT'S how her parents treated her. Toph went in the extreme opposite direction. She was NEVER critical of her daughters. She let them raise themselves and each other. So no, I can't agree with Toph being a critical parent. But goes against the very core of who Toph is. I in fact doubt she trained them more than just the basics. It's clear that Toph was NOT greatly involved in their daily lives. Hell at 16 she sent Su away to live with HER parents. How long do you guess that visit was. I'd say years before Toph do much as stopped by. One of the reasons Lin is so angry is because Toph was neglectful in her STRONG desire to let her daughters have freedom. Being a critical parent would mean she stayed involved in their lives. Which from what Lin says, she didn't.

"I hate Anarchy, but I'm gonna beat it with Anarchy!" Totalitarianism, actually... which is pretty much the opposite of Anarchy. "Why does she think she's the victim?" Um... she doesn't, really? It's called manipulation/propaganda? You can literally see it working on Bolin, as he parrots her exact narrative back to Mako in the next scene. Which is why Kuvira stops doing it when she is alone in the room with Suyin. She knows she cannot manipulate her, and she doesn't have to, because Suyin's an enemy, not a subordinate. so she states the initial necessity of her cause, emphasizes the strength of her current position and threatens Suyin. I might be misunderstanding the intentions behind your remarks, in which case this entire comment sounds condescending as hell and I'm putting my foot further and further in my own mouth, but that question sounded sincere, and if it was you are severely underestimating Kuvira here.

Then they agreed that she was a tyrant. How in the world do you have a tyrant and anarchy at the same time? Those are completely opposite lmao. Idk I just think it's funny how much crap they gave the Earth Queen and Unalok as world leaders for being "incompetent", and here we quite literally have Prince Wu, the poster child for incompetence (he's literally getting a diplomatic council to run things for him... which basically makes him like the Earth King from ATLA and they hated that too.) and yet they're coming at Kuvira as if she doesn't have a leg to stand on. Anarchism, in essence, is the flattening of unjustifiable hierarchies. Kuvira is more aligned with fascism which is pretty much antithetical to anarchism.. A leftist critique of anarchism in the short term is that, if the withering away of the state happens before power is situated in all people's hands, then the people with the most power both within and without that society will simply waltz in to take power back, exert dominance, and regress. This shows last two seasons show this perfectly. While I don't believe every writer on the show is some hardcore leftist, I know there some people that know their theory for sure

No fr. Idk why the stank faces came out when that comment was made lol. Literally season 1 Korra stormed into Tarlok's office and was about to attack a world leader to get her friends out of prison. There was a policy to arrest non benders out past curfew. Asami was out past curfew. Thems the rules. The rules sucked, but they voted on those rules. Mako and Bolin's arrest was controversial, but they were interfering with Asami's arrest at that point, which warranted their arrest. Either way, Korra had no legal right to do what she did. We just only see it from her perspective and are supposed to trust her "sense of justice" which ultimately gets proven right cause she's the main character and plot. She did the same thing with Asami's dad. Of course he wasn't a world leader, but still. Bottom line is Korra does what Korra wants and she always gets what she wants. Kuvira does exactly that.

@patrickcromwell7554 what political issue was there? @patrickcromwell7554

@@camil3545 And the way you stabilize a chaotic nation is by establishing a ruling government. That's called politics. AND if Su started cleaning up it would BE HER name everyone was cheering. Su does not want to be monarch or government leader of any kind. Even though her family is considered to be the leaders of Zaofu. Kubota WAS just a soldier until she organized an army to stabilize the Earth Kingdom, then she became a political figure. By uniting the Earth Kingdom she became a new leader. That is political. She declared herself the new leader of the Earth Empire. That is a political figure. If Su had done things, she would have been forced to act on behalf of the entire Earth Kingdom. Leading a nation is political. Are you getting it yet?? And for the record, yes. Su's personal COMFORT IS more important than sacrificing her personal morals to become a monarch that will lead an entire nation. THAT'S why she refused to do much as deal with The Earth Queen in the first place. She HATES politics.
@camil3545
@camil3545 8 ай бұрын
@patrickcromwell7554 Su wouldn't have to become a monarch, though. Everyone, Su included, basically let Kuvira do whatever she wanted because it was an in-term position that was supposed to be handed off. It only became an issue because she isn't willing to let go. Unless Su thought that the position would drive her into a power hungry state where she couldn't let go as well, she could have prevented all the problems that showed up in this season. As the Ruler of Zaofu, she is already a political figure and is on friendly terms with other major political figures and World leaders (not wanting to have anything to do with the late queen was more likely due to the queen being a massive B* more than anything else). Su is very much steeped in the political world of Avatar already.

You could argue that the Scandinavian prison system is basically a system of reeducation camps. Convicted offenders spend time in a controlled system learning useful skills to society and being taught the error of their ways. They have some of the lowest recidivism (previous criminals going back to crime) in the world. Our western image of these things are concentration camps with a different name.
