IMO: Kuvira does love Bataar - but she buys fully into her own bullshit that the Earth Empire should be united. She was on the verge of tears when feigning retreat, but it wasn't really necessary to "sell" the surrender. She just really thinks the earth empire should be "whole again". (and I also don't believe that it would've stopped with Republic City, I'm willing to bet she had her sights set on Kyoshi Island next as being part of "historical" earth kingdom.

i think they said they did it so that she would be recognizable because the first time we’re introduced to her she’s just a background character and a guard. Having the mole makes her distinguishable from the other guards.

the land kuvira is referring to as “stolen” by aang and zuko are the fire nation colonies in the earth kingdom. After 100 years of fire nation rule, there’s a good chance that pulling the fire nation from those area entirely would’ve destabilized them, at a time when the earth kingdom army already had so much on their hands. It’s also likely that the people there were already a mix of people with fire nation and earth kingdom backgrounds, and trying to pull the fire nation from the area entirely would have separated families, or at the very least upturned their lives. Aang knew the earth king, and as a man who never actually had to rule, he had a lot to deal with and a lot to learn when he took his throne back. Turning the colonies into republic city meant that the fire nation, earth kingdom and white lotus could work together to help the area stay as stable as possible and become its own state. The other options would have been for the colonies to be given back to the earth kingdom, who at the time would not have had the resources to manage them after already not doing so for 100 years. If the fire nation kept the colonies, that also would’ve been an issue as they attempted to reframe their nation into one of peace and innovation. The creation of republic city allowed everyone to work together to maintain as much stability as possible and try to limit the huge changes that were inevitable for citizens after the war.

@@Diegesis A month late, but to be fair, it's barely even hinted at in the show. In The Battle of Zaofu, Kurvira gives orders for Zaofu's domes to be dismantled, and in another ep/chapter, Opal wonders where the domes disappeared to. So it's safe to say that the mech's frame was molded from Zaofu's domes, then coated with platinum. Maybe it would've been better covered in the ep/chapter that got turned into the Remembrances clip show.

The sad thing is that Kuriza is just traumatized. Because her parents abandoned her when she was acting like a wayward Toph with her metal bending. And we learn in the comics when Su took her in Opal bullied her and when she retaliated Opal would call Su who blamed kuriva. But still she protect them acting like a soldier and forced to live outside. And Su still used force with her but with her birth children she was so gentle. It wasn't until Tenzin asked Su to help and kuriva voiced her opinion and Su yelled at her and walked away was when she learned Su was toxic.
