Thank you for sharing. Just left the Benz dealership. They quoted $1,130 for fob, cut insertable key and programming. I couldn’t believe it. They also were persistent in saying it has to be the dealer doing this and that a 3rd party key will not work. I was reminded today how car dealers are very unethical.

Great vid info. Thanx for your kindness. I only had one key also and i got stranded one day and my car wouldnt start for nothing. Very stressful. I said never again. Inside the fob circuit board theres a tiny little coil with wires thinner than human hair. I hear sometimes the wire can break. Maybe after many years of repeated dropping. But who knows. I looked close and couldnt find anything wrong on circuit board. But anyway i found a guy who drives to your house and programs a new key that he has on the spot. Then he cuts out the new emergency key. So much cheaper than dealer. I was gona buy the ebay key but outa respect for the guy i paid him for the key. Then he programmed it. Also, keep in mind, some ebay sellers sell bare key fob shell for cheap. No circuit board. The whole circuit board from your old key slides out in one pop and you can slide board into the new fob shell. Now your beat up key looks new. I did that one my older key. By the way the fob battery is only to unlock the car. If your take the fob battery out key will still work for starting the car. I now always bring the second key with me everywhere i go and just keep it locked hidden in the car while im out so as to never get stranded again.

Oh thank god, good to hear about it starting without battery… really was my main concern… but my question is where did you go to locate a guy to reprogram it? I have a 2004 c240 benz… I’m located in WA… lmk brotha! 🙏🏻 would save me hundreds of dollars and lots of hours searching…

I called two lock smiths locally to get an aftermarket smart key programmed, one wanted $450!!! The next one charged $125, he can also get the original Mercedes smart keys at a steep discount compared to my local dealer. It seems the dealers are pricing this work very high to drive us away.

I disassemble my 2012 fob with youtube instructions, cleaned it thoroughly, didn't panic about the minor pins that cracked as was previewed in the video, and put it back together. It works perfectly now. The problem was range and sticky buttons. To soften the glue I used a hair dryer. Once open and all electronics and metal parts separated, I used dishwashing liquid and a toothbrush to clean the majority of the gunk. Important is to press the buttons gently from the inside of their fob half and clean around the edges that are normally recessed when the buttons are flush. Lots of sticky gunk to diminish their functionality. The electronic board was fine. I did need to buy a second key after losing one in a house fire. 430 euro. That is why I opened my daily key to see if it was just gunk. It was just gunk. Important tip. Don't let the key that was opened get immersed. It has certainly lost some water resistance. If you wish and are dexterous and good with gluing, you could reglue it with a very fine syringe tip, but it's probably more of a risk than help. Plus, it will be easier to clean should it need it again.

This works up to 2014. The new system requires different programming. All the local locksmiths can do the early MBs but not the later MBs.

Online would be more expensive including risky, because: Local reading the key, storing it on media (that equipment costs additionally) , sending the data online.. sending the new key ( with risks to be stolen in transport). Even if you send original key to be created copy, additional 2 risks for both. =Only local.

As well I’ve been looking and calling, asking reading etc… lol 😂 for couple years, and I’ve seemed to be hearing that it’s 2014 like production late that year but still 2014, and newer can’t be exc for dealer? Something like a system like fbs3 or fbs 4… I’m sure the name is off, but it’s the newer “system” name from these years up… 2014 or 2015…… In the GL models are the ones I’ve been mostly asking on… Is it on all or certain models?? On the Chinese key this is only a cap, the place where should be the emblem. Just remove it. With the key in the package should be an emblem that should be able to get on that place. Thanks for the content as always!

I was always told that new keys were delivered from Stuttgart as they had to be paired to the original VIN for the car and that coding information is never allowed outside the factory where the car was built. Seems like that is not true! 😡
