Ok, I think I’m finally making sense of all this interest in peak brightness - at least from my perspective - it’s like headroom in an audio amplifier: you’ll never need to use all that power continuously, but having clean power to spare allows you to operate your equipment in its comfort zone even with demanding material.

I would just sub the word 'power' for 'range'. HDR is mastered up to different peaks to represent more tones in the final master distinctively. Not every scene in a project will have data all the way from 0.001 to 4000 nits, but as the HDR masters have increasingly been for 4000 nits peak, televisions that can just represent that as is don't have to engage in things like HDR10+ or Dolby Vision tonemapping down to some lower peak. It can just show the final master as is. And given the contrast and exactness of OLED, it's quite the experience to have the full range of the master able to be presented by the TV, regardless of if it was mastered for 500, 1000, or even 4000 nits peak, which is currently what the best HDR mastering monitor is capable of reaching. I'm very excited we've finally reached this point. Basically means I can just buy any tv with this panel and be good for the next decade or so of shows and films being released.

I've seen no quotes from Samsung just reporters holding up phones to the screen confirming that it's not qd-oled that's being displayed on the floor. That said, so many reporters are repeating that Samsung won't have 83" qd-oled that there must be some unofficial talk on the floor confirming that they won't. This despite all the talk just a week ago that there would be based on those new skus found. In fact, some outlets are still reporting 83" qd-oled is simply unknown so there is no consensus. Personally, if they are supplied, I am hoping Sony is able to take advantage of them in their next qd-oled offering.

The problem with high brightness TVs is that there isn't even close to enough content that is actually HDR color graded to take advantage of that brightness, at least when you turn on the video profile that actually maintains artistic intention (filmmaker/cinema/movie mode)
@Mat-hr1dg16 күн бұрын
That is why I actually stopped watching correct color calibration for some shows and movies. I just can't anymore. The ignorance of the filmmakers talking about some lost film magic when color grading to hdr standards... it just stupid. Something like Dunkirk? Yeah sure. But for everything else give me the whole goddamn color space. You don't need to emulate film to get a "dirty" picture. There are many methods to create completely new ways of experiencing movies and no one uses them, and those that do often do not know what they are doing at all.

@@Mat-hr1dg I tend to watch movies with my own preferences. Colours look more natural that way and it takes advantage of the brightness of my TV. Honestly I can't help but facepalm when I see all these so-called 'professional' reviews claiming that the Bravia 9 can get up to 2800 nits... when there's reviewers out there pushing out over 3500 nits with it (granted at a minor cost in accuracy, but even at 3000-3200 nits it's still very accurate). And I don't like the settings professionals use either. Cinematic presets and calibrated presets basically suck out much of the colour and brightness. Can't even be claimed to be the 'intended' way for the movie to look because it still looks different on every TV. Even when it comes to mastering movies... it's still just a few people working on the movie who do it. And then the various people who go over it and check it often do so on various other screens. Then there's the cinemas where there's also differences depending on all kinds of factors. Fact of the matter is that there's really no way to reproduce an 'intended' look properly because there's also no way to figure out what it was intended to look like unless you have the actual lossless quality footage straight from the studio and watch it from their equipment. As such, the best way to watch a movie is the way it looks best to you. I feel like these pretentious fake 'cinematic' modes have made the pretentious faux movie buffs extra arrogant and stupid. Even the professionals these days really only review TV's using the basic viewing modes and compare them between each other without actually trying to get the best out of each TV.

@michaelbeckerman753216 күн бұрын
Very unlikely at this point as the cost of those adapters is still too high. Probably won't see those on TVs until 2026 at the soonest. Plus, there's nothing that would even make use of that additional bandwidth to a TV yet content wise so there's no real reason for them to adopt it yet.

Why would you need that on the TV if you can connect a streaming device that has it (and can be easily upgraded as technology advances).

Where are the new mini LEDs from Samsung his year?
@cyberedge88116 күн бұрын
They can make a 27" 4k QD-OLED panel but somehow can't make a 42 inch one. That's all I've been waiting for: a 42" QD-OLED with glossy screen and black frame insertion mode.

why do you need so many nits my monitor is 250 and i never have it that bright wtf?

Manufacturers: We want larger OLED's now! Preferably QD-OLED's! I already have a 77". Not upgrading until bigger is better!

Would the Samsung now be brighter and better image quality than the lg g5?
@Tek2150216 күн бұрын
Yes
@Sedge8616 күн бұрын
Looks to be a little brighter but the new lg panels are advertising brightness increases as well. Image quality comes down to more than just brightness though. They'll likely be extremely similar again in a blind test.

It doesn't really even matter as both companies still over-boost and over-saturate their colors by default on all of their TVs. It's 2025 now and they still haven't managed to correct that yet. How is that even possible? (When your default settings right out of the box make grasses and trees look like they are all in Chernobyl, you know something's not right with their approach to color science.)

@@michaelbeckerman7532set it to filmmaker and stop complaining online. TVs have never been so accurate out of the box and that includes both of those brands
@verttisyrjala289715 күн бұрын
@@michaelbeckerman7532Are you for real? You do like 5 clicks on the remote to enable Filmmaker mode on any modern TV to get a fairly accurate experience, of course some gamma issues and white balance issues are expected, but nothing too crazy. Colors certainly aren't oversatured with any of the major brands in the TVs most accurate modes.

Can someone explain to me why we're so obsessed with brighter screens? I have my LG OLED at 55 brightness and even then it's sometimes too bright. Are we watching these televisions outside or something?

It's nothing really. 90% of people who complain about the tv don't even own the tvs. They just have too much free time to complain about every little thing

Higher peak brightness is effective for specular highlights in HDR content. Higher full screen brightness helps to the limit the potential for ABL to kick in.
@BruceLeeRoy2616 күн бұрын
It’s a sales tactic, so many people are obsessed with numbers and associate higher with better. Nits in regards to effective brightness for example caps out like 2000, the higher you go the more diminishing returns you get. Brightness perception isn’t linear, 4000 nits doesn’t mean it’s twice as bright as 2000 nits. Samsung got their suckers, hook, line and sinker.

It's for things to pop out at certain points quite a bit better I'm OK for this to happen on TVs, not so important on monitors as I set so close to 'em

What Samsung tv had 3000nits in 2024 because it wasn't the S95D as its highest output was about 1600nits on 2% and 10% window? The S90D was even less with about 1200nits on a 2% and 10% window.

I think that stretching screen would be good for 3D movies if it ever becomes feasible. I really wished 3D would come back & yes, it's a gimmick but so are movies & shows to begin with. A gimmick to entertain us after a big day. I also would really like to see if Vizio is a part of CES again. Would be nice if they finally have something to make them stand out again.

I think it’s for two reasons (at least) one is to match the nits for Dolby Vision (4,000 - 10,000) another is to fight the sun and the “not bright enough” allegations. But honestly, you’d have to sit farther away. I have a cheap Vizio V series and white scenes will hurt my eyes if the backlight is too high. However, since it isn’t an OLED, the picture never looks correct. It’s missing those accurate Blacks. I think these companies should be focusing more on accuracy, motion, and ease of use.
@verttisyrjala289715 күн бұрын
Oleds are still heavily limited in 100% window brightness, leading to bright scenes in HDR being dimmer than they should be.
