those chunky white things are basically niangao (aka rice cakes or mochi), and the babaofan (the glutinous rice cake with the colorful candied fruits on top) are more commonplace in Jiangnan region (more specifically Ningbo) and is typically a new years dessert. i'm surprised you haven't come across it before, but i guess it's not as popular now as it was 20+ years ago. babaofan is steamed until soft before serving, sometimes drizzled with an osmanthus syrup. i didn't expect to see a stall of glutinous rice products in a market in Shangri-la though.

Totally agree about Yubeng! One of the most beautiful places I've seen in China. Back in 2003, I hiked with 20 or so ethnic Tibetans up from西当村 to through 雨崩村 to 雨崩神瀑. Apparently they were on a religious pilgrimage. I was quite hungry and underpacked, a bit dizzy so they gave me some 请客面 and 糌粑 to eat. Then I took a detour over to a glacieral lake. Along the way, I met a monk and a "Chinese teacher" whose Mandarin was worse than mine. We stayed in some small place with out power or warm water. Flies all over the food. Had 青稞酒 and passed out. Forgot to mention it was 20 or so kilometers per day over two days. Much of the trail was deep mud. Anyway... Totally beautiful place and such nice people. I'll always remember Yubeng.
