This song is pure Warwick. When she was young and could hit the notes. Vandross though takes this song to a whole different dimension. Warwick and Vandross presented different styles on this song and both are beautiful. But this is a Dionne signature classic.

I think this was one of the prettiest songs Bacharach and David ever wrote. At the time, they pretty much were writing music with Dionne Warwick's voice in mind and her rendition of this song was absolutely perfect. No one else's version came close to hers. I was lucky enough to see her, when she was at the top of her game, and her voice, in person with just a single microphone, sounded as good as it did on her records.

I agree, but Dusty's live performance with Burt faking on the piano (and adding some horrible, out of tune singing of his own) is pretty wonderful in it's own way. Wish she had done a studio recording. I'm glad to have both versions, though it's Dionne's song.

Pure class! The Lady is a true artist. Her voice told the story without lewd gyrations, lip sync or auto tune. I feel sorry for today's forgettable female singers. They will never get it nor be remembered. But this jewel of a performance will still be played long after the pop tarts have been forgotten.

Bacharach and Hal David wrote some amazing songs in their career. This is just one of them. Dionne Warwick just kills it here. Amazing.

A chair is still a chair Even when there's no-one sitting there But a chair is not a house And a house is not a home When there's no-one there to hold you tight And no-one there you can kiss goodnight A room is still a room Even when there's nothing there but gloom But a room is not a house And a house is not a home When the two of us are far apart And one of us has a broken heart Now and then I call your name And suddenly your face appears But it's just a crazy game When it ends, it ends in tears Darling, have a heart Don't let one mistake keep us apart I'm not meant to live alone Turn this house into a home When I climb the stairs And turn the key Oh, please be there Still in love with me I'm not meant to live alone Turn this house into a home When I climb the stairs And turn the key Oh, please be there Still in love with me

Dionne, Burt, Hal David brought such beautiful romantic visions, and hearing the beautiful Ms. Warwick always takes me back to those golden days. She is a national treasure.

What I have always loved about Dionne is she had respect for the lyrics, the music, the correct approach. Dionne could sing gospel, soul and most types of music but rarely did she try to blast through a song like so many do today. So many singers oversing with a melismatic approach (constant runs,) that can take away from the beauty of a melody.

Thank you for posting this. I just learned today that she made this before Luther. I never understood her reaction to him singing it. She appears to be so affected by his rendition at the 1988 NAACP Image Awards and I attributed it just to Luther's talent. I never knew Dionne Warwick was this graceful, elegant and amazing. Thank you for posting the video Bleek Gilliam. I will now purchase the song. Thank you for the history lesson. Thank you Indeed!

She introduced almost all Bacharach/David songs during the sixties. Dusty Springfield was also famous for singing their songs.

It's fine mate. I also just turned 20 and I have loved her and her songs when I was 15. We can still enjoy her songs through these platforms. Perhaps, the only thing I wished I could have done is to attend her concert and sadly that won't happen anymore.
