In each episode of DiResta (every other Wednesday), artist and master builder Jimmy DiResta (Dirty Money, Hammered, Against the Grain, Trash for Cash) lets us into his workshop, to look over his shoulder while he builds whatever strikes his fancy.
In this episode, DiResta makes mallet from hardwood on a vintage wood lathe. The result is a practical piece of art. If you're a fan of woodturning, this episode is for you. Read all about it on MAKE: makezine.com/video/diresta-har...

This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection kzbin.infoUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seems to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.

warren buitandag I thought it looked strange and was trying to work out what kind of mallet it was, and when he cut the head off I was like "Ahhhhh what is he doing!"... But then realised the genius

+ranwolf76Those are called carving or setter's mauls. The cylindrical or tapered cylinder head provides more accurate strikes to carving chisels than a flat faced mallet.

Amazing work as always! I would love to see a combo mallet in the sense of it being a wood head but a metal tube for the shaft and then again a wood handle (similar to the hatchet he made). I think that would pretty sweet.

Appeared to be too much scraping and not enough slicing with the skew and gouges, but the job got done and looks great, liked how you turned the handle and head at the same time. After watching richard raffin, opened my mind to how one can use the skew.
