Sweet, another video today! I've been trying to finish this one all day but been out of town for a couple weeks working so needed to tend to things here around the house. You guys run such a clean ship around the shop. Highly impressive! Loved the tricks especially the hot sockets. Makes total sense, seen that kind of thing working on aircraft in the Navy. Yeah, looks way easier then manhandling a crank puller putting the pressure it does on the cases. Man those gears are so clean....never done a tranny, so what I've been playin around with will be my first, as long as there's no love it's ok?🤣seriously though that will be one epic bike when you guys are finished, there's going to be one lucky Shacker!! I had a trans story but this is already too long. Guys take care and have a great weekend 🤙

Have you guys ever heard of QPQ Coating (Quinch Polich Quinch). We use it on Stainless and 4140 L-80 parts here for anti-galling purposes. I'm not sure if this coating would work for any parts applications but might be worth looking into. I know it's pretty cheap process and the coating is black. It does bring the metal hardness up as well.

Steel sleeve bore, spray with penetrating oil before soap and after soap and water wash. Wipe excess and oil the bore. Thats my procedure. I would seal it up and keep it away from moisture unless you install right away.

My worst transmission story. I did a complete rebuild on my bike. Replaced all the normal stuff for a top and bottom rebuild. I obsessed over every little detail for a while as parts would slowly come in the mail. Once I got everything finished and went to put the front sprocket on, I suddenly remembered than the splines on the shaft were worn and I meant to replace that shaft and completely forgot about it. The sprocket still had decent engagement, but I’ll bet that the splines on the shaft will be the first thing to fail as I put more hours on the bike. So next time I do a top end, I’m probably going to have to go into the bottom end again.

Shouldn’t the case bolts be installed dry without grease, as the torque settings are for dry assembly, and grease will reduce friction and increase the actual torque applied to the bolt, which could strip the case threads??
@MXSkillShack5 ай бұрын
This was common practice that I learned as a race mechanic. Many things were done NOT by the service manual, but were HELLA cool and much better for equipment. Engine and chassis buildng all fasteners were greased. One thing I noticed early on is that it was easier to get to a precise torque with a lubricated fastener then dry. You ever notice that creeking in triple clamp bolts when you loosen them after a while even if you know they were torqued? Now put some grease on the bolts and try. So much better and no binding. Some food for thought.

With magnetic drain plugs, has anyone ever heard of a magnet coming out of its home and ruining a transmission? I had an aluminum dipstick cap drop the pressed steel dip stick into a frame on a DRZ. Since I saw that I’ve been afraid of using magnetic drain plugs.

@MXSkillShack5 ай бұрын
Why are you yelling?…. Threebond 1211 is something special. I’ve used it for 2 decades on engine cases and many other dirt bike “things”. It’s the 💩. Kawasaki sells it with their own p/n. Are you familiar with it? Personally I don’t like dealing with sealants that harden on center cases. Some of those can be a pain to cleanup. Tony // MXSS

You guys are so stubborn that you rather put your cases together with a hammer than use a crank puller....smh. usually the crank goes out of true when you do that. Not to mention that freezing the crank sure does to. Not always but usually. But props to you guys your stuff looks trick!
@MXSkillShack5 ай бұрын
Hi Caleb. Much appreciated feedback! You know sometimes expressing/showcasing a different approach doesn’t always go to plan. The puller certainly does have a place and makes it a breeze. The bearings should still be expanded to do that or you put a lot of side load on the inner race. In a normal case when we’re not trying to explain/teach, which takes some time, and this case the crank temp increased heaps and didn’t allow for an easy case drop. Usually that process needs to be done in a minute or less. Have bearings heating at same time, left case gasket prepped, and transmission intact… Other option was a plastic mallet, which I’ve used on many engines, with “light taps.” Not everyone will have a crank puller, but everyone should have a plastic and rubber mallet. Interesting on the crank points. I’d have to disagree, but we do appreciate the input. Thanks for the compliment! We’re pretty stoked on it too, but really it’s not ours, it’s yours, we just get to build it!
