Having a temp sensor on the bms itself would not help at all. A BMS warms up very quickly when current flows through it. A temp sensor for cells needs to be attached to the cells, and no where else. Even if they programmed the BMS to have low temp charging protection with a sensor attached to the fets heatsink, it would not work properly. Some have suggested adding their own bms. That would not be fun. These are hard to open and you won't be able to use the case after you open it. And it would be a huge waste of time. Also, these cells peak temp should be 60 degrees Celsius! So the current temp switch has too high of a threshold. Not good! So as mentioned in the video, use a victron solar charge controller with their "battery sense" temperature sending unit, and add your own low temp charging protection. The JBD 150A with 2 temperature probes for the batteries and one for the BMS is a good BMS which is why I'm confused why they use what looks like the 100A version and with the wrong sensor...just as baffled as you are how they can screw this up and I only have one explanation - it's the photocopier at work. If an outfit can pump out 4s batteries using incoming LFP cells it would be typical for them to buy a few different competitors, copy them, pump out their own product and then disappear after their run is done. Since so many other batteries you've looked at have this *same* failing in a very similar way this is what I thinks happening as similar mistakes have been seen in Russian and Chinese military copy-pasta projects.

Will, thanks for continuing your low temperature sensor efforts. My motorhome has multiple charging methods including the alternator. If I switch to a LifePo4 battery without low temperature protection, just starting the engine in freezing temperatures will damage the battery. Low temperature protection and total conversion cost is preventing migration to LifePo4. Keep pushing for low cost with low temperature protection!

I'm glad he's doing this, even though he lives in a warm climate. I bought an EarthX LiFePO4 battery that is marketed to snowmobiles. Guess what? No low temperature protection. It ate itself in less than a year, then the company refused warranty (which was supposedly 2 years). So lots of scummy companies are pulling exactly this low temp nonsense. I have a Bluetti AC200P with 400watts of their solar. This unit is a beast, it's plug n play and portable like you said so it can easily move to another rig. When it comes to money I really don't care about getting cost down to the penny per whatever. I just want stuff to hook up easy, charges fast and powers what needs power. I use my Bluetti for emergency power back up in my 50amp motorhome. I've been making several emergency power upgrades this year after last winters Texas freeze and this Bluetti is the final piece and icing on the cake for my total emergency power solution when stuff happens.

@RVstreet2 жыл бұрын
@@jimbob3030 Well it just depends on what each persons needs are. Living and traveling in a 50amp RV like we do, we don't need anything near that big. Also,, many people who RV just want want a plug n Play option. They don't want to become electrical engineers. But if what you bought fits your needs it's all good. But everyone is different, has different needs and a different budget. I forgot to add this important fact. Many people like us don't want to have all their power needs in a permanent installation. All there eggs are in one basket and it can't be moved to another unit. This was an important part of our decision.

Will, I truly appreciate your feedback on these batteries, I enjoy them and click pretty quick to see what you found again and again. Thank you for the hard work you do day in and day out on these videos and testing! The only thing I will say here, it seems too many people put an emphasis on low temp protection. If you are building a rack or bank in your basement, why worry about it at all? I guess it really is about the application and use of the battery. THAT SAID....they absolutely should not sell these as low temp protected batteries, it is false advertising and if someone was to use this in an RV and expect it to be protected, they could easily smoke $3k in batteries unknowingly with a bank of 3. Again.......THANK YOU for doing these reviews! The community is grateful to have you and your passion in what you are doing!
@kirklivingston39912 жыл бұрын
The problem with charging at freezing temperatures is that it will ruin the battery. Not everyone has a nice benign basement to install batteries in. Also if a window blows open in the basement or a door gets left open the basement could still get to freezing temperatures in a cold snap. If nothing else it's cheap insurance for an expensive battery. Especially if you have a large bank of batteries.

We have a shop and a barn on our farm in Minnesota whose temperatures are below -35 F (not counting wind chill) for 4-5 weeks/year while the two months on either side range between -34 F to +20 F. . The house basement is an additional issue - it stays around 30 F for 2-3 months and 32 F for a month on either side. We're trying to find a safe way to safely charge those expensive batteries and we've been disappointed (like Will) every single time so far.

I purchased a 100 AH Ampere Time knowing it did not have low temp protection. I use the battery to power my Astrophotography setup. It will run my mount, all my cameras, Dew Heater bands, and computers for several days before needing a charge. But it is always outdoors, so I built a 2x2 foot 1/2" Plywood box with 2" of R15 insulation all the way around it it keeps the temp up fairly well. I tried the rubber mat heaters for RV Water tanks and they did not work. I attached them to 12x12 tin sheets to help radiate the heat but the instructions say right at # 1 you must attached these to a non-conductive surface. So I wasted the price of two of those puppies. Should have read the instructions first. Oh Well. But I also wanted to have a place to put my computer to help keep it a little warmer as well. So I moved all the computer electronics into the box as well. Made little shelf that would sit over the battery. Bought a cheap but seems to be very effective temperature gauge so I know when I can and cannot charge the battery. With my computer running I have seen temps as low as 10F and the inside temp was at 38F. So I can choose when to charge the battery and when not to. It was because of this as to why I went with Ampere Time. If I find I'll be imaging at temps below 0F then I'll turn on the monitor as it puts out like triple the heat of my computer. Should keep the battery roasty toasty even at -10F. ;o)

BMS Heat Dissipation: Question Pros and cons of burying the BMS inside these weatherproof or waterproof housings. Wouldn't it be better practice to have the BMS so that the heatsink can dissipate heat away from the batteries? What if any difference do you believe it would make for life expectancy? On the other hand if you are in a cold environment the BMS heat output would help to maintain battery temperature above minimums. Yes they put heaters inside the housing too for cold

Will, I appreciate your videos. I think you are overemphasizing the importance of cold temp battery cut off. While it may useful for solar and other applications, if you put a battery with cold temp charge cut off in an small EV such as a mobility scooter or power wheelchair there will be problems. When you go down a hill the motors send a regenerative current, which is usually quite low, into the battery. So when it's below freezing the BMS will reject the regen current, causing the controller to have an over voltage fault, and the machine will shut off. This can potentially bring it to a skidding halt, throwing the rider off! Most people charge these with very low amps since they are using their old SLA chargers, so cold temp charging is not necessarily a problem but something to be aware of. When I set these up for a customer I make sure to use a charger with a cold temp cut off or low enough current. Better that way than the BMS leaving you out in the cold!

It looks like the linked web page ad has been corrected - it only says over temp now. Although they have free shipping it does not specify where they ship from or shipping time. If from Asia, it could take some time.

I purchased raw cells for $132.60 each and assembled a 32 cell battery the BMS is not included but it cost about $130 also. the 32 cells are Grade A 280Ah EVE LF280K cells and if I calculate correctly they end up being 14.80 cents per Wh (not including the BMS and wiring which will likely add another 300-320 or so). here are my figures 3.2 volts x 280 Ah x 32 cells = 28672Wh for $4243 = 14.80 cents per watt-hour and a lot of time to assemble it. if I add in the estimated $320 for wiring and BMS then it is 28672Wh at $4563 = 15.9 cents per WH. my end-use is a stationary off-grid house. cheers, all; 😎 just thinking of the DIYers! $.159 per Wh without the plastic box and serviceable. I do like your reviews of new stuff coming to market.

I imported from China for about ten years . What Americans don’t understand yet is , no name brands to speak off. Companies are told what to build, how many to build , and how to price the product. You can travel hundreds of miles and always get the same price quote. The only way to make an extra buck is to cheat. That’s the reason I don’t trust Chinese products that should last for years. Communism isn’t the shining hour of humanity, since doing an excellent , outstanding job has the same rewards as sloppy work. If they cheated you on a feature you can bet the life will not be great.

@@jimbob3030 amazingly they do speak English. Translations are always difficult. Take the weird sounding Mazda slogan Sky Active , it is supposed to convey The Sky Is the Limit . Also every customer service rep will gave a common western name like Bob or Cindy.
@jimbob30302 жыл бұрын
@@ytSuns26 You or I would have come up with a better phrase for the american market mazda could use than sky active or the sky is the limit, how is it that these companies with huge budgets can't figure out better things than to try to translate what doesn't translate well? I still don't get it. When I said it's like they don't speak english that was just a joke, but across the board overseas companies tend to be rather poor at this translation and marketing stuff. Sky active means nothing to an american at all.

Looks like a decent solution if low temp isn't an issue. But it IS concerning that it touts low temp protection, yet is has none. Amazing how some Chinese companies just put it out there without even getting it right on the package. Keep up the good work man.

I really like running 12v batteries in series (despite the extra manual balancing overhead) because if anything in the system fails they can still be used for other things. a 24v battery isn't compatible with much!

Will. We know about cold charging in the North-40c . No battery will survive those temps. We wouldn't put any battery in these temperatures to charge . Indoors only.

This in 24v 100ah is probably a perfect match as the powerpack replacement for my power wheelchair. Kept in room temperature, this battery pack it isn't subject to temperature issues. It is sealed and self contained. Cheaper /easier than a DIY project. Pity they don't offer 24v 200ah. I might get one.

Thank you, Will (we're not worthy!) for the very insightful videos. You've made it clear that lithium batteries should never be 'CHARGED' while they are at freezing temps. Can lithium batteries otherwise be used for power in cold/freezing environments (without charging)? Also, can they be stored within an RV/trailer/shed/cabin during winter(s) and not degrade? Thanks again

LiFePO4 batteries will hold their charge for years. Some battery BMS' shutdown the entire battery pack when the low temp switch kicks in, meaning no charge in or out. Some mfrs. have built in heaters in their batteries. I believe Renogy did have internal heaters. If you have a sheltered, insulated area that would be ideal. LiFePO4 batteries have no off-gassing as opposed to flooded cell lead-acid batteries so ventilation is not a concern.

If you have batteries configured in parallel, under some circumstances, there can still be eddy current flows between those batteries even when charge current has been shut off at the charging source due to low temperature. Charge current shutoff can also be inaccurately measured at the charge controller because of differences in measured temperatures at the controller versus at the cells. This is particularly true when the temperature is rising, the cells are cold-soaked, and the thermal mass of the battery is much greater than the sensor on the charge controller. It's safest to have charge current shut off at the BMS, with a proper sensing location on the cells as described by Will above. I consider this battery a "no-go" for any environment that can ever have a temperature below freezing.

Regarding current limiting for a starter motor; I am considering adding a series inductor as a means of controlling the rate of current rise when hitting the starting switch on my boat engine. It would be about 40 turns of #8 wire over a 3" diameter form. Roughly about 10 mH is my goal. The thought it the motor will have a bit of time to get rolling without looking like a near dead short to the battery (about a 1/10 sec to get to 100 amps) Ever hear of such a scheme ? Still sizing this up and it will add some inductive kick on turn off, but a TVS (transient diode) can come to the rescue. This is to allow a 100AH or 200AH battery to also serve as a starting battery.
@davidadams4212 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you're trying to achieve here. If you're trying to reduce operating current, adding an inline inductance will not achieve that because its the resistance of the starter motor coils that determines current flow, yes, it may soft-start, but the peak current will be the same, just delayed. Why would you want to soft-start a starter motor? And remember, a starter motor is just one big inductor anyway, it's just one where the induced magnetic fields actually do something useful. All you will achieve doing this is a more poorly performing starter motor. If you're trying to 'convert' a leisure battery into a starter battery you might want to consider LiPo chemistry, not LiFePO4. Drone batteries, for example, can easily push 70C so to deliver, say around 1,200A, you'd only need a 17AH pack (17AH x 70C = 1,190A). Remember, though, that LiPo chemistry has a 3.7V nominal voltage, 3S = 11.2V, 4S = 14.8V. I think you're going to struggle to cost-effectively make a LiFePO4 battery start an engine, inductor or no - they just weren't designed for this purpose. HTH.
@brianboschma2 жыл бұрын
@@davidadams421 I am trying achieve a weak soft start, get the magnetic field initiated without exceeding the BMS limits. A motor is not just a big inductor, it looks nearly resistive until the armature is turning, it has back emf once it starts moving making it appear more inductive, but if under heavy load it appears largely resistive. . The peak currents at start up can be 10x those when turning , but if heavily loaded as is a starter motor , currents remain quite high. If you would like to see this phenomena I can send you plots of 1/4 hp 12 v motors in the start phase that have peaks of 60 amps in the first 10 usec. They then fall to 7 amps after reaching quiescent speed. However by limiting the initial current one can reduce the initial phase and still get it rolling. If I can start my engine within the BMS limits and the 200AH design limit than I can avoid the weight and expense of another battery on a separate circuit with associated charger, etc.
