Discovery 3 tailgate latch failed. We fix it and make it better with Dynamat and a BBQ!

Every LR3, Discovery 3 will go through this problem. The tailgate actuator fails - if you're lucky like me it'll fail when open but most fail when they're closed. If you can get to it, it's an easy fix with parts being pretty cheap. I strip the whole tailgate down, fix the latch, add Dynamat sound proofing and rebuild the tailgate ready for camping with a built in stove!

I have had problems with the switch that opens the top door, caused by pressure washer detergent ingress into the switch causing it to fail. Fitting a simple press type switch into the plastic panel (on the back outside of the bottom door) is a very cheap and effective fix. You must clear mastic the top of the plastic panel to stop the problem repeating itself.

New to your channel and Disco ownership, so I will now watch you avidly. I wonder if the vehicle has been flooded? All that ‘dust’ in the tailgate reminds me of dried muddy water…

It was owned by a drilling company and quite a bit of muddy tools got thrown on the back. I aim to eash that interior trim this weekend!

You should have replaced the latch cable at the same time, because they do break very frequently and when they break it's a pig of a job to open the tailgate to replace it.

Yes, some people even put in an emergency release where you yank on it to manually release it. It’s a sensible mod for overlanders etc.

Definitely worth adding a manual pull cable. It is only a matter of time, not if, the bent metal hook piece breaks.

What about filling the holes on the ply sanding and then painting it? cheaper and easier to maintain

Is the top tail gate going like the heat and smoke from the burner?

Should be fine, although you can close the upper tailgate with the lower one still open.
