It's not the same logic for aliens though. For life on another planet you just need another earth in the right zone from a star with water and life could happen. And that sounds crazy but if the universe is as big as we think it is. It's almost certain that there are many 'earths' out there. Mermaids are entirely another thing. It requires the evolution of a fish? To transform into half an ape? And to keep evolving while it's also able to live deep enough down in waters we have found yet? And none of their remains or half eaten corpses have ever been found.

Quite honestly though, who would mistaken a sea-cow with a mermaid? 95% of our oceans are unexplored because our fucking government is so adamant on finding life in space, ignoring the fact why our oceans are so polluted. When I was 11 I was fishing in a boat with my grandfather on the groundhog River in Northern Ontario, Canada. It was early morning and we had just started out. I was at the front leaning out slightly watching the wave caused by the bow, my grandfather was manning the motor. As I watched I saw a human head and back rise up out of the water inches from my face. It was a human body until it reached the bum, at wich point it became a fish with large green scales from the waist down. The tail was not that of a fish ie up and down but rather that of a dolphin side to side ie a fluke. Strange because these rivers are fresh water and fluked animals live in Salt waters. I know I was not dreaming because it made certain to give me a good splash with its tail before diving down, never to be seen again. Strangely my grandfather did not see it.

These creatures DO EXIST! The 1st one I saw was exactly the way the woman described her. (And they CAN live out of water) her skin was milk white and her hair was long and red. Her eyes were light brown and red. And af he had like, the perfect shaped body! I lived in California at the time. So think about it..the hot California sun and milk white skin don't add up, right? Well ,she was a stripper at an exotic bar ( makes sense now? ) that was over 20 years ago. But not my last encounter. The 2nd one was on a personal level. And one that could have took my life. I wish I was making this, shit up. But it's the truth. The other encounter was in Florida. I could write a book about what I experienced but, Heck I'm just glad I'm alive because at the time I didn't know she was going to try and drown me or take me back where she came from, or what. Humans have been traveling over sea since the Vikings. These guys brought back a Buddhist statue, so they've literally sailed to Asia at least once. Some drunk, lonely sailors who imagine a woman in the dark waters of the night, sharing the story on every harbor is hardly a miracle. People traveled, told and inspired stories and whenever someone "saw" something they linked it to the tale they heard. Also humanity imagined half-animals since forever. Egyptians made them their gods, Greeks invented half human, half horse/goat/fish/snake. Whatever made a good story. It's hardly surprising to find the same tale on different parts of the world, especially if they've been open to travel once.

@@tammythomas209 yes I wanna know because it sounds scary! Who doesn't want to hear a good story (scary or whatever) every once in a while? Telling a great story like that will make ppl want to hear more for whatever reason.. I don't see why it matters. I just thought your story was very intriguing. I love to hear stories of such things because I KNOW they exist. One thing I won't do is physically go look for one of those things which is why I asked you. So, I aint gonna be experiencing nothing intentionally. Its better to know what you are up against and how to handle it versus running into the unknown and not knowing what to do. One of the villages here in Fiji in the highlands has a full skeleton of what we call a "Ikayalewa" meaning "Woman fish" if translated. A chief of a village near the ocean called Levuka hunted the Ikayalewa about 100 years ago and caught one. He sent it up to the village in the highlands as a gift. The skeleton is still there to this day. Human top half and fish bottom half with tail still intact. The chief owns it and never lets anyone touch it. I've never believed in mermaids but I've seen the skeleton. But it's a gruesome hike to the village.

I just find it fishy that why there are mermaid pics on the cave, and if it was just some dude mistook a fish as a mermaid than why he is going to bother putting a knife on his hand or i might say tools, like that little details. There are also like baby mermaids, and they have drawn like some type of tribal or like social creatures. By the way i am not on weed or i am not into " little mermaid" fantasy thing. Just curious.

I'm a big fan Sir Jeremy Wade, I think I can say I've watch almost all your episodes. I am from a small state in the northeastern part of India called Mizoram. My granpa use to tell me about a fish he caught in one of the rivers here, and many others have also seen and have caught it. But the weird part is, the fish is like 5-6 cms long but with a humanoid upper body with hands and all( like mermaids). I would love to see you try and catch or just explore this part of India where fairy tales and this kind of weird creatures are still believed to exist. Much love all the way from Mizoram. xoxoxo

@@nikim6986 I don't know, I don't believe in mermaids but on the other hand we know more about the service of the moon than our ocean so... But I don't think the cob is what people are masking for mermaids because cob don't usually swim in shallow water, especially the big ones tend to be more in the deep pools along a beach (but they do go into rivers to lay eggs) but the really big ones are very hard to find

I once heard a story that the reason these sailors were 'seeing mermaids' was cause they had been at sea for so long that there imaginations were running wild n seeing what they wanted to see!! But who knows lol So they were most likely seeing a fish like this in the distance or obscured in a way were it at quick glance appeared human like!!

I grew up listening to my grandpa's mermaid stories. I highly believe there is something out there on the bottom of the sea that d/t the change in climate strange things are surfacing to the top. Creature unknown to some humans I believe there are preexisting animals that are hiding else where in the world and as I said things are changing so they are coming up and we may not be prepared to handle these things. Thank Jeremy Wade. My family and my family had watched you through out all your investigations all over the world. Thank you.
