I remember reading a comic where Scrooge tried to slaughter a dolphin that was trapped in a beach so he could sell its meat and when Donald along with his nephews tried to stop him(which they did , Donald especially was a badass in that comic) he threatened them with a knife and said that he would do the same to them.Long story short those comics made me love Donald but they also made me hate Scrooge for some time.With that said I cant wait to watch the new cartoon
@seaniccus7 жыл бұрын
I think that's why they made Scrooge so much kinder in the original cartoon. He was usually good hearted in the comics, but every now and then there was a weird moment... and even when he chose to do the right thing, sometimes he would intentionally act like he was being "swindled" so people wouldn't know. (The time when he revisited Goldie at his old stake claim comes to mind)

The very first appearance of Scrooge McDuck gave him an absolutely monstrous backstory. It involved him exploiting African tribes people in a 19th century colonial fashion. His arch nemesis Flintheart Glomgold was originally a south African. There are things that I think should be left in the comics and the era they were originally from despite Don Rossa's thoughts on the matter.

I honestly wasn't sure whether to consider it a reboot of the 80s series or just another adaptation of the comics, which I haven't read myself. The former because of returning side characters like Webby and Launchpad, along with the title and theme song; the latter, for the elements you mentioned like Scrooge's red and black attire, Donald's bigger and more adventurous role, and the art style. I guess it's a both and neither situation. But even if doesn't count as an official reboot, it's at least making interesting changes while also understanding and respecting its source material. I can't wait for this new series to come out.
@seaniccus7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, when I saw the trailer it didn't quite look like the original show. I think it's going to be it's own thing that just draws inspiration from both. The skyline of duckberg, for instance, seems to have the money bin on an island in the bay, not on a hill -- and lots of things like that are changed. Still, really looking forward to it!
@Launchpad057 жыл бұрын
Interesting video. It's pretty obvious that the original 'DuckTales' kinda had Scooge's bitterness dialed back just enough to make him care more about the nephews than he did in the comics. 'Mickey's Christmas Carol' was probably the closest we ever got of Scrooge's pure self during Alan Young's lifetime. Also, the added detail of Donald going on adventures before the nephews came into his life has me scratching my head a bit. Sure, Donald did go on a few adventures in his original cartoons, and even joined the army during the war, but I wonder how the new series will play that out, or if they'll have him join the navy in the reboot.
@seaniccus7 жыл бұрын
I'm sure they're going their own direction overall, but Donald went on plenty of Adventures with just him in the old Barks comics. One example of the pre and post nephews is "Plain Awful," a secret city Donald discovered (while on the search for square eggs) in the Barks comics, and revisited with Scrooge in the Boys when Don Rosa took the comic over later. But yeah, there are slight differences. Seems like a merge of both, with plenty of new ideas thrown in!
@whade620007 жыл бұрын
Here's my problem with this. Donald being a renowned adventurer in the comics is more of a continuity meta joke. As a main character of course he'd feature in all sorts of stories and it sometimes the author and the reader wink at each other over all that technically being part of the "canon" that ended up being created. But Donald is NOT an archetypal "adventurer" character, he's an everyman type of character. The majority of his stories in fact revolved around things like job hunts, household chores, or neighbor feuds. His constantly troubled romance with Daisy, his old car that breaks constantly. More importantly, they are going to start the show with the boys meeting Scrooge for the first time meaning that NONE of Donald's past adventures are going to be actual stories on the show beyond this mention. So in the end it's really just a wink at the comic readers, but is going to make little sense to first-time viewers. I guess they may end up revealing that he earned his adventurer reputation BECAUSE of his involvement with Scrooge even before the show, and so there'd be a kind of continuity with the boys now following in his footsteps. But if they don't do that I don't really see a reason not to just make him an unlucky everyman from the beginning. Again, as a comic reader you KNOW at least about Donald's constant bad luck and so a joke where he's just unfazed by danger because he had dealt with worse should get a laugh, but it's a different deal when you convey all of this with only a montage and then his personality is at odds with that backstory for the rest of the show. A callback to his army promo cartoons would be great but it's not gonna happen, as WW's been way too long. :D I actually expect the characters to be modernized even more than in DT in this version (the boys will totally use phones and social media for example, instead of being Junior Woodchucks).
@Launchpad057 жыл бұрын
I kinda see your point. Donald, much like Goofy, is definitely the 'every man' of Disney's star characters. Though what sets Donald apart from Goofy is his temper, and how easily frustrated he gets in certain situations where as Goofy is so blissfully unaware, and solves a problem in the easiest way he can only to realize it's more complex than he thinks. (which results in frustration in it's now way, and is where his slapstick usually comes from) That one scene in the trailer where Donald starts raging, and gets stuck in a hole retains some of his 'everyman' frustration. As well as the 'birthday' short. So maybe Donald 'thinks' he's a world class adventurer, but can't seem to pull it off as well as Scrooge can.

Since this show is much closer to the comic do you think we will see an adaptation of "Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck"? That is my favorite comic of all time and that would be AMAZING!
@seaniccus7 жыл бұрын
That would be awesome! That comic is one of the best stories ever told... but I doubt it will get a full adaptation... though I hope I'm wrong! While I do think that the foundation of the original comics is much more prominent in the new show, it still has a lot of Ducktales.. and while the new characters probably won't muddle Scrooge's life story too much, the new, modern setting probably would. The comics never took place after about 1948, which meant Scrooge was old enough to have had those Gold Rush adventures --- the contemporary setting of the cartoon would mean a lot of his origin story would be irrelevant. That doesn't mean it's impossible, but it would require a lot of clever writing and adaptation -- or else they'd have to just ignore how much time has gone by (which they sort of did in the Goldie episodes of the original Ducktales). I would be really interested in seeing an adaptation, though! A modern scrooge's story would have started around or just after WWII, so the entire story of his fortune would be rewritten. That could be really interesting! Maybe he came over from Scotland after serving in the war, for instance, and found his fortune in the post-war boom of the 1950s!
@rockyspongy7 жыл бұрын
Seaniccus I don't think Ducktales has such a big problem with continuity. The actually could make Scrooge tell the story and when he arrives and the Gold rush part Loui could be like "How old are you?" and Scrooge just ignores it and continues. The actual reason I thought that they could make an adaptation of the story is because what I suppose to be the shows beginning reminds me of the books ending. I know it's far fetched but a man can dream. Those specials better be more than holiday specials. I can only dream what the steamboat scene would look like animated.
@seaniccus7 жыл бұрын
Right -- they'd either have to shrug it off as a joke like that, and tell the original story, or completely re-write it. I'm not sure what they'll do. The writiers of this show may choose to rework it to tell a more modern immigration story -- after all, Fenton Quackshell is now more ethnic (and voiced by Lin-Manual Miranda!)

They ignore this all the time in the duck comics. Rosa is the only one pedantic enough to set his stories in the 1940s. (Barks, of course, lived and worked around those times, so for him that's no big problem.)

There was a strip where Scrooge is in his mansion alone around the holidays, and he's reading a correspondence from an apparently sick child he secretly helped with money or something. She starts out thanking "Mr. McDuck," but as she gets older she calls him "Uncle Scrooge." At some point he gets tears in his eyes. It was beautiful. I think, as a kid, it was in the "Uncle Scrooge In Color" book which I have, sadly, lost. I'm 39, but loved Carl Barks.

Not sure what a Donaldist is, but here in Norway the Donald Duck comics were literally one of the most best-selling comics in the country, Donald is a cultural icon, pretty much just ask anyone and they'll know who it is. I'm curious: When you're talking about the duck comics, are you talking about the whole huge, mass produced, body of comics that we know here in Europe? Or some very specific subset published by Uncle Scrooge Comics in America? Because it sounds like you're basing your comparison mainly on Rosa, who's a very good but also a very unusual duck storyteller. Everyone else, as far as I know, is more than happy to bends timelines and almost every story is set at the time it's published in. Rosa is also the only one extensively using real people, places, and history, doing minimal changes to accommodate, well, talking ducks. The others, including Carl Barks, prefer to invent amusing parody versions of everyone and everything, including foreign countries, and then discard them once the story is done. They avoid placing the stories anywhere in particular, to allow people from different countries to connect as easily as possible. (Duckburg even usually has their own team at the Olympics, just to avoid specifying a country while Rosa's ducks sit tightly in the imaginary state of Calisota.) The character depictions also vary wildly. Especially Scrooge can be a cuddly old skinflint, an adventurer, or a hard-boiled cutthroat businessman depending on who's writing. Scrooge playing parent to Huey, Dewey, and Louie is specific to Ducktales, though.
@seaniccus7 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking of Barks and Rosa exclusively -- as those are the archives I have access to and are the most direct linage on the world as Barks created it (though Rosa certainly took his own liberties). A lot of the other Duck comics / artists I just don't have access to.. and I think a good deal of them may not have been published in the US. It's true that Barks is more vague than Rosa, but his Duckburg (at least in the volumes I have) still functions on a facsimile of reality, with less of the supernatural Indiana Jones type stuff we saw in the DuckTales cartoon or modern Duck comics. ..but since Barks established the series, and Rosa continued it with the explicit choice not to move it beyond the "Barks Timeline" (a timeline that mostly existed because of when Barks wrote the stories rather than any specific choice, probably), I'm mostly talking about that as the "core" timeline. ...it gets complicated with Disney Comics, because outside of Rosa's attempt to stay in line with Barks, there's almost no connection. The Donald Duck daily strip, for instance, has no narrative connection to the Barks / Rosa comics.. just as the Mickey Mouse dailies don't specifically tie into any of the shorts. More complicated, is Mickey knows Donald in his comic, but Donald doesn't know Mickey in HIS comics (at least some of them). The whole "shared universe" thing didn't really exist when a lot of those strips were made, haha
@Ratelzwatel7 жыл бұрын
Rosa doesn't follow the "Barks timeline", as if there's any. After Barks's retirement in 1966, Barks wrote some new stories up to the 1990s. If I remember well, 'Horsing Around with History' (1994) refers to a fax machine. And one of his late 1980s paintings, 'Holiday in Duckburg' (1989), shows Gladstone Gander holding a videocamcorder. 68.media.tumblr.com/37f0fda2f43019b8c60d2f4bf78e8bdd/tumblr_mutra7ts7G1rhjbado7_1280.jpg According to the "Barks timeline", the Ducks are timeless. According to Rosa's timeline, the Ducks are placed in the early 1950s as being present time. Barks made many more stories after that; the 'Uncle Scrooge' comic book series had only just begun in the early 1950s. Rosa follows his own timeline, which he created himself. A timeline in which the Ducks are mortal humans with duckfaces, with Scrooge being dead since 1967. That's his own vision and it has nothing to do with Barks's vision. Barks's vision and Rosa's visions are worlds apart. Mixing them up, as if they're one, creates a lot of confusion.
@tommihorttana8607 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Rosa is a very unusual duck writer because he's almost compulsively detail and consistency oriented. As for Barks: It's true that he wrote a lot of very down-to-earth stories (as many duck authors still do). But he did also basically invented Indiana Jones (www.cbr.com/comic-book-urban-legends-revealed-133/) with his numerous globe-trotting adventure stories, I think mostly in his later years. He was pretty versatile as a writer.

I originally wasn't too happy when I saw the different art style, it feels much more blant and so incredibly different from the warmth of the original. With your explanation however and considering the massive amounts of Duck comics I've read, I think you've hit the nail on the head. Now that I've let things process and seen more scenes lately, I have to say I am quite excited actually. Not because it's the same as the original, as it's clearly not, but because it is so different and in a way an evolution. The art-style is still the only thing that disappoints me, but I'm willing to give it a shot and see if it grows on me. Great video!

@sjakierulez7 жыл бұрын
I think you already gave the answer: cheap and lazy. I really miss those cartoons where even the background was detailed.
@Yurikon37 жыл бұрын
Have you done animation or cartooning? Im fine for taste differences but when people start accuses for lazyness and cheapness I draw my line there. As long as drawings are made by human hand with tabloid or pen, no amount of technology magically make animation live. Computers can help only to cut corners but hand drawing is still needed. I have worked in that field and computer is not cheap ticket to easy animating. If the amount of constant movement is the problem, you must know that good animation is not only about constant movement but good timing and spacing. If old show's animation is looked sometimes, there can be some pretty slow and slobby animation, it was not all roses and gold even there. As for the detailed backgrounds and ugliness-... Those are matters of taste. These backgrounds actually have Chuck Jonesque feeling in them and those pics were from times of old. Making "detailed" background might actually be sometimes easier to do than stylized. Besides, sometimes too detailed background might harm the storytelling so detailed background is not sure ticket for success. Nostalgia, it is everywhere, but I cant stand when it makes people belittle efforts of work they have no idea of.

I like how Donald is going to be much more involved in the new Duck Tales, too. I've never been a fan of Clarence Nash's Donald Duck voice, only because it makes it so difficult to understand him in an animated cartoon. I really only want to know one thing about Donald in this new series: Is he retired from the Navy now or did he just not join. I really hope they don't remove his military service from the character. My father is retired Navy and as a kid I liked that Donald was in the Navy. Coast Guard would be ok too since he is an IRL coast guard mascot.

"One of my first TV memories" Mine too! :D I remember as a tiny tot that I was crazy for DuckTales, and was totally jealous of the kindergarten classmate who had a DuckTales lunchbox. I even insisted on DuckTales underpants (T-shirts of licensed characters cost more than my parents were generally willing to pay at the time, so undies were basically the only way I got to wear my favorite characters). When the Disney YearBook several years later featured a story about Webby's jumprope I was so excited to see my fave triplets again. I even watched QuackPack avidly in my early teens because it was "DuckTales, if they'd grown since it was on the air." I was so happy to see that the triplets had their signature colors but weren't carbon copies of each other. (Though, as you've pointed out elsewhere, they were the usual "teen boy" stereotypes you see in so many other shows.) AND NOW DUCKTALES IS BACK AGAIN AND IT'S EVEN BETTER THAN I COULD HAVE HOPED! I'm super-excited to see where this series goes, and once DVD/Blu-ray box sets come out, I'm hoarding them for my children.

Koodpa kid Nope.... voices suck!, the original ducks sounded a little closer to Donald, more "duck like" I can't currently think of a thing more worst than this! The new Ducktales reboot is SHIT!!! The animation, voices, dialogue, theme song, writing, emotion= it's ALL a big pile of excrement!!! The only somewhat decent thing is Donald Duck I'd rather watch "uncle grandpa" or "Barney" than any of this crap! Three episodes in and I turned it off... I don't have kids and after watching this I DON'T even want any! Man my generation had the best of the best: Darkwing Duck, DUCK TALES, Adventure of the Gummi Bears, Gargoyles, The new adventures of Johnny Quest, Batman the animated series, Superman the animated series, Justice League of America, Yu-gi-oh, Tailspin, Animaniacs, Bugs Bunny and Looney Toons, Pinky and the Brain, Beetlejuice, the Simpson's, street sharks, x-men the animated series, Hey Arnold, Rugrats, Wild Thornberries, Dragon Ball Z... Oh Disney, how you have fallen! FALLEN FURTHER THAN LUCIFER!!! The ONLY good thing about current Disney is it's Customer Service! Answered my email in less than a day of sending it! I'd rather Fuck a ten dollar 70yo fat hooker, infested with aids, than ever watch this Ducktales reboot again. "HAS THE WORLD GONE MAD?!"- Gomez Adams

Semantics - it utilizes and redefines the look and feel of familiar characters that were specifically from the cartoon, ergo it's a reboot (by definition) The new show looks meh. I'd rather watch the original to be honest - it was way more mature and at times, more intense than some unnecessary, generic-looking knock-off that looks like something from the Nicktoons bracket
@Yurikon37 жыл бұрын
Id personally say that old show's style is a bit too generic and bland. While it might be technically working it does not make it very interesting. New show hasn't even aired yet so story is still to be left unfold. Im 90s kid and kinda liked the show, but when i look at the animation nowadays it has more frames but is kinda chunky actually.

My parents used to get me and my brothers Donald Duck comics all the time and we have collected A LOT of these comics over the years. @ Fredrik Dunge I agree, Darkwing Duck started out pretty good, but it got really goofy and almost embarrassing to watch with later seasons. It almost mirrored Adam West Batman in that kind of way. Even as a kid, I always wished that DW was just a tad more serious, not like adult serious, but more like Ducktales type serious (or Tailspin)... if that even makes sense. Having watched the first episode, it didn't disappoint at all. Something interesting I did notice was little Easter eggs that could imply that it's more than just a duck universe, that other classic Disney shows like Darkwing Duck and Talespin might be gearing up for reboots of their own. Also Disney might be taking a page from Marvel's book and setting up all these series to not only be in the same universe, but allow for crossovers and team ups which would be pretty awesome.

This gives me some new hope for the reboot of the series. I never grew up to the comics as most, for me I got into it as a TV series as a kid. I loved the intro and lyrics, the b/g music, the characters and the episodes. I was super hyped and skeptical when I learned of the planned Reboot. I miss Alan Young as Scrooge McDuck and LOVE the 10th Doctor, but I cannot help feel he will have some big shoes to fill. But that said, I've no doubt he'll do fine. If the show is going too be a hybrid mix of the comics and the cartoon I'm all for it. I get a hint of that just from some of the visual cues in the intro. I do like some of the new designs they have like Webby, Flintheart Glomgold, teh BeagleBoys. But some have me raising eyebrows like Mrs. Beakly. But overall I'm excited and looking forward to this reboot. I just have one question....WHEN IS IT COMING OUT???

@Choom20777 жыл бұрын
They don't need to stay the same. But they can get better. This new animation is very lacking, both in detail and animated frames per second. It's cheaply done, without a doubt. It's almost as bad as Aqua Teen Hunger Force (in the animated frames per second, department).
@Max17157 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Disney surely doesn't need to stay in the same style all these years, but.. First, this is a reboot, so I think it would be quite appropriate to keep the same style but simply improve the graphics, but what's most important I think, is that this style is absolutely horrible, at least for the nephews' faces, they truly are horrifying in comparison to the original ones.

It's just in a different style. Most television animation nowadays is done in software like Toonboom, even traditionally animated shows like this or Gravity Falls, and doesn't really have anything to do with the art style. To me, the backgrounds look straight out of an old comic book, and the character designs are very reminiscent of Milt Kahl's Ludwig von Drake shorts. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXfJpWypg9iid6M

I disagree about the art. I don't think making Webby a more complex character than "girl who likes dolls" qualifies as "SJW BS." Her original character was awful and uninteresting. If you're offended that the creators wanted to get away from a trope that's not even interesting to watch, I feel like we're just not on the same page here.
@omegasupreme19707 жыл бұрын
not offended just tired of the same old formula we cant have a girl be well a girl who likes dolls ect No she has to be a kick butt bad attitude "boy". They basically made webby a boy in a dress. There is nothing wrong with a girl wanting to be a girl she doest have to be a boy.
@ZiddersRooFurry7 жыл бұрын
Why can't she have a kickass grappling gun? Why should society cater to your outdated notions of gender? Women do adventury shit, too. They fight in armies and are members of special forces and go to outer fucking space. Stop it with the 'girls don't do this and that that's boy stuff' bullshit.
@ZiddersRooFurry7 жыл бұрын
I mean really. What fucking century are you from?
@Yurikon37 жыл бұрын
To be honest I must admit that hanging on lanterns, shooting dart guns and alike is more interesting than catering lifeless doll all day. Kids usually like rougher play and usually young boys and girls are up to same games. In other words, this Webby is portrayed more as a kid, not merely just as female kid. At least when I was a kid, girls of my age could be into same rough play like snowfights as boys and still there were some differences. For man creating a female character can be tricky, because they simply might create the mirror of their own stereotypes, making female character bland. I agree for that tired boy in girl costume trope, but id say this direction is still better than in old one. There must be many ways to make character feminine without using same tropes with dolls and alike which can actually be just tradition, bit like in 1700-1800 pink was considered men's colour and light blue women's colour. For art style I dont say anything since it is the matter of taste. Personally I like ChuckJonesque palette, because I find old show's color scheme bit... Generic.

Everyone says that the nephews' voices are too adult, but I don't think they sound any more adult than most cartoons (at least from when I was growing up). Comparing the voices to, say, Ed Edd n Eddy, they seem about the same or even younger sounding that the Ed's. Could just be me though, I haven't really watched a lot of more modern animation so I'm not sure what the expectations are.

Honestly, my favorite part of the Don Rosa comic is the parts that shows how close Donald and his nephews are. There's even a scene where Scrooge admitted to Matilda (his sister) that he envied Donald's close bond with his nephews, as such familial bond was something he foolishly threw away years ago. So yeah, i'm especially happy that they put Donald in the cast.

I grew up with the original Ducktales and after seeing the new intro and trailers I'm extremely hyped for this. Like you said in your video the prospect of a Ducktales "reboot" that takes elements from both the old comics and the show is really intriguing. I'm not ecstatic about the voices of the kids either, but it doesn't really bother me either. Having actual kids act the parts might take away from some of the comedy, and while I think getting voice actresses instead to play them would have been better I'm not opposed to what they're doing if it turns out okay on all other fronts. As for the voice of Scrooge I'm totally fine with it. David Tenant is an amazing actor and a fine choice to try and fill the boots of Alan Young.

Before watching the reboot Ducktales I would have rated DuckTales and Donald and Scrooge as some of my least favorite disney characters. Now that I’ve watched almost all of the 2 seasons I can’t stop thinking “where was this kind of cartoon when I was a kid?” I know a lot of the story wouldn’t be the same if it was made back then, but it contains a lot of the messages actually followed through on that old cartoons would leave hanging in emotional glances and parents not being able to actually say they love their children. Instead all the good parental characters are constantly repeating and voicing and reenforcing their love for the kids. And the kids are able to show their emotions and work through them. The boys are allowed to be emotional and Webby is being praised for her achievements and skill. Tenant took Scrooge from a character you wanted to hide from to a clever and loving grandfather I wish I had. Donald Duck has actually become relatable instead of the punchline or 1 dimensional. And of course you’ve already covered stunning Daisy Duck. I am blown away by how good DuckTales is. Between it and She Ra (which would be so awesome for you to cover 🤩) and Gravity Falls...well, I think the kids might actually be alright if we don’t permanently destroy the planet before they have a chance.

Oh yes, totally excited for this. Growing up, Ducktales was one of my all time favorite shows & like you, some of my earliest memories of cartoons was of watching Ducktales but then again, my parents would just sit me in front of the TV, tuned into the Disney Channel when they were busy & I wanted them to pay attention to me so I suppose it does make sense that my earliest memories are of the show. I like how it takes elements from both worlds because I would be sad if it were straight up off of the old Uncle Scrooge comics, not that I have a problem with them but there were things in Ducktales that I wouldn't want them going without. The voices of the children bothers me but hopefully I will grow use to them. I'm very excited about today's kids growing up with Ducktales, I work with children & actually one day when I wore my Ducktales shirt to work, one kid told me he read the comic books & I thought that was super cool.
