One word: STARTCH! As long as your fabric is fully washable, for slippery fabrics and bias things especially, it makes both cutting and sewing without them stretching out of shape SOOO much easier. Just wash your project and hang it right before hemming at the end (to level the hem), and then all the slippery drape-y goodness comes right back.

A tip I learnt to change out my over locker threads was to tie a knot from the old threads to the new ones and run it through the machine until it’s changed colour💕

Lovely dress! Thank you very much for the tutorial I have never tackled a cowl neck before and this really helped. I am new to your channel, I am glad I found it, I love the way you explain things and you videos are entertaining to watch even without sewing along. I know this is more of a sew along than an in depth tutorial but in case anyone else goes to make this I have two notes. 1. Don't add seam allowance to measurements X, Y and Z, which, of course not there are no seams between them, but I just blindly did when you said to add seam allowance to all the measurements. My fault for not thinking about it. 2. The back pattern piece should really be Y + Z + skirt in order to male it tall enough to attach to the front just under the arms and then match up to the front facing. Just Z + skirt is too low I figured this out after cutting my fabric already and only had just enough fabric to begin with. I just had to shorten the skirt length to move the piece up and re shape the top part of the back. Other than those two things it was a really easy sew and the video was really helpful! I made my back and extra section on the front facing 10 cms as you suggested too which worked well the facing stayed down after under stitching, and I also added slits to the sides of the hem. I have tagged you on Instagram if you would like to see my result :) Shelley

Loved it! A trick I’ve learned regarding changing threads in the serger is to cut all threads and make a knot with the old thread and the new one and start sewing, eventually the new thread will go thru all the threading shenanigans by itself. Note: the threads that go thru the needle might not go thru so I just thread the needles myself.

Hi, thank you so much for making such a detailed and clear video, also the dress turned out BEAUTIFUL. I really want to make that dress for prom, and something really confuses me here.. at first, it looked like you were going to connect the back part to the front part, by the waist area, because the width of the back part starts at c/2 (the waist measurement). But then, when you sewed everything together it seemed as the back part is connected to the front part by the upper back/bust area... I hope someone can explain what is happening in the video... thanks!

WARNING! At 8:33, there is a big potential for mistake. The back pattern is not Z+Skirt but it is Y+Z+skirt (minus whatever length you want...). The back is attached at the armpit, NOT AT THE WAIST (as you can see at 18:46). I made the mistake (like many in the comments) and now I have to shorten the dress in order for the back facing to be aligned with the front facing. Not fun to waste some fabric. Thank you for your video, your dress looks great, but it would be even greater if you could EDIT THE VIDEO to avoid the confusion. I am surprised this hasn’t been done already... Also, the vertical measurements (x,y,z) do not need seam allowance... anyways, thank you 💕

for your ties if you serge/overlock it, you can create a really long tail and tuck it inside the tie but do not cut the tail from the machine and just serge/overlock it closed and then you have the tail to turn it from pulling it until it is turned.

Hey this is such a nice patter! I actually tried it, and I found my back piece wasn't matching the front. I guess it was something about the drawing you made to explain how to do the back piece. Did you mean the full length of the back piece is y+z+skirt length? otherwise it will happen what happened to me, there were some flaps of fabric from the front piece that didn't match the back piece, underneath the armpits. Am I right?
@halfsoybean3 жыл бұрын
I'm not too sure Joana, I thought everything matched up - the front is a bit bigger because it folds behind? I'm not exactly sure what the issue might be 😭
@BlaiseRashelHarman102 жыл бұрын
I was just about to cut out my pattern pieces when I noticed the same thing, at 19:54 we can see that the back MUST go up to the B measurement, so it has to include y to match up

YES same thing happened to me😭😭😭 i actually tried to make the dress twice, and both times had the same result. I didn't know what the problem was but i also got that flap. Now I'm out of fabric and very sad i couldn't make this dress.

Love the dress and the pattern but a quick question. For the back part of the dress, does it actually start from the hip? Based on the finished dress and how some things aren’t aligning with my dress, it seems like the back actually starts from the line b?
@RosinaRosinaRosina3 жыл бұрын
This is the exact issue I’m facing (no pun intended) right now! I’ve had to redo the whole back piece because my facings weren’t lining up at all and far too much of my back was revealed. I think it’s just a mistake that not many other people noticed. As this is my first time making my own pattern, I’m not completely sure how to readjust it but I’ll give it a go! I’m surprised at how few people have mentioned it :/

Hi, thank you so much for making this video! I'm not sure if you monitor the comments still, but on my finished product I had armhole gaping along the side of the bust (between the armpit and where we connected the straps to the top of the dress). From what I found online I could fix it with a dart, but I don't want to ruin the look of the cowl. I was wondering if you had any insight on what I could do to fix the gaping? Thank you !
@VMETuran2 жыл бұрын
I understand totally. The whole point of the cowl is that there are no dart, right? Maybe redo the side seam taking in the excess instead of a dart, or try criss-crossing the straps in the back, so it drapes straighter at the sides.
