On the kraken story: the actual joke wouldn't put me off, but the way the DM handled it would do. He seemed more concerned with forcing the joke into the game than focusing on running a fun game, and prioritising his own amusement over theirs.

You know, it drives me crazy when DMs aren't just incompetent, they're like... pretty much actively sabotaging their own campaign, forcing players to beg, making a deep sea monster into a sexual assaulter, and so on. I derive fun as a DM from when my players are having fun, the more fun they're having, the more fun I'm having, makes me work extra hard to come up with fun sessions xD

7:30 Yeah I would not give the Kraken DM another chance. I have been with DMs that have had this style of "humor" and it *never* ends well. Anytime anyone adds anything horny to a game that is not previously advertised as erp friendly or after a chat with all those involved, that person who brought up sexual content first for sure has ulterior motives and will only become more subtle to reach their goals. Besides, after not noticing/caring that other members of the group were uncomfortable, I would lose all trust in that dm. And as an afab person, I will not and cannot play with people I can't trust.

Similar thoughts. DnD and horny never mix well. Whenever a player or DM includes it unprompted regardless of context is almost always in bad taste. He knew what he was doing, and so often I see horror stories involving horny going horribly wrong. Players were right to abandon DM.

@@Ante-Anima i only mentioned it cause I am not a girl, but am in a female body and present femininly. That part isn't what was important. The import bit is that i have so many stories about male dungeons and dragons players being super creepy and put me in very unsafe situations *because* I was a "girl". As a person whose experience of the hobby has been through a feminine lens, I can say that I need to trust that the people I play with will listen to my boundaries and not make me uncomfortable for the sake of their own amusement. Navigating this hobby without running into creeps is hard lol. Hope that clears things up for ya ^-^

This sort of goes to what I was saying in a reply I just made. Peel back the "humor", it's essentially ERP that would have involved SA. What if one of the women had experienced that or something creepy in previous games and it was traumatizing? When you consider that it was beyond a reckless and thoughtless "joke" and you can understand why they reacted as they did. As you said, it's hard to trust someone like that.

On that second story, the group is not wrong for dropping the DM. You can test/push limits in a story but you gotta make sure everybody is good with it, it sounds to me like this DM had a fun idea and decided to roll with it without even bothering to consider how his players may take it. Also it's literally the first session, like if you're going to push things a bit, at least give people a few sessions to relax in and open up the chance for people to say that they are just not comfortable with it. In the group I am in, (the DM role is rotated between 3 people, each of which runs a different campaign), the DM that originally put the group together always checked everybody was okay with some of the lewd jokes that did arise, did not make anybody uncomfortable. Primary example being when some party members decided to refine stones into some rather phallic shapes and to sell them in town, as it goes, nobody in the group had any issues with it but you always gotta check.

@@Kairos_Akuma If you're talking about having discussed it in something like a session zero, I'd say that the onus would be on the DM and not the players. Setting expectations should be done before, but it should be done by the DM and it was the DM that was the issue in that session.

@@Kairos_Akuma I disagree on that. Essentially, he attempted to make ERP involving what would have been SA as a joke. It's entirely understandable to me if they didn't appreciate that kind of humor and didn't feel like giving him a second chance because that didn't want someone being in charge of the entire game that did that without even consulting anyone if they were okay with it. I don't think it's the case, but what if one of the women had been a victim of SA? That could have been extremely triggering and traumatic. It was a very irresponsible "joke" to make and they might not want to risk worse happening if they didn't just nip it in the bud. Look at all the stories on here where people give second and third chances after glaring red flags and regret it. They were trying to make sure that didn't happen to them and I get it.

I'd drop the kraken sperm DM too. Narrating sexual assault and laughing about it is a dealbreaker. Sounds like they did give the DM feedback on why they were leaving and I think that's about all the courtesy the situation called for. If that's what you want in your game, I have no doubt you can find like-minded people. Just raise it front and center in session 0, or in the game posting. Never assume it's ok.

About the Kraken bukkake assault... If the players are here for the fun more than for that for the investment and have no problem with crass jokes, that's 100% fine. If the DM's style doesn't fit the players's style, then it may lead for lame sessions to everyone... That being said ditching the DM for it with no warning is really harsh as it doesn't leave room for adaptation or improvement.

Okay, that second story, what the hell did I just hear? Horny krakens? Having that redecorate the ship? What I just heard, I cannot unhear, and not even a q-tip can get that filth out of my ears. In all seriousness, that DM should not do this kind of gross stuff without asking the players for their consent to see if they're okay with doing such RPs. IMHO, the group was not too harsh, as such things not to be taken lightly (especially when the story had some of the female players being uncomfortable). As R3sistance has stated, don't do this sort of sick stuff without asking if everyone is okay with doing such things.

The second story, the group were NOT too hard on the DM. I think the group should have shut the DM down hard on the horny Krackens so the sperm WAS his second chance. But they should have only given him a second chance if they talked to him and made it extremely clear that wasn't cool. That being said, there were women in the group that were made uncomfortable by such themes. I don't blame them for dropping him because it's extremely likely they just had no interest in playing with a DM who decided to basically set up an ERP involving SA as a "joke" without even consulting anyone. That might even be the main reason, they just weren't comfortable having someone basically being the god in their game that had that sense of humor that made people uncomfortable and decided to nip it in the bud before it could potentially get any worse. But definitely seems overly simplistic and a bit naive to say they were "too harsh".

Nah no one needed to talk to that dm in story 2. Calling him a dm is generous even. He didn't talk to anyone about inputting his horny fantasy, so why should they have to tell him a dang thing. From the first dm not realizing making your players beg is all a power trip and more. They lack the self awareness and understanding. As for talking, why didn't the dm talk to his players before popping in horny krakens? Why should players have to encounter that in order to tell the non-dm how wrong it was? Should you have to talk to me if I decide my PC wants to force yours into a scenario, afterwards or should I have the knowledge of "oh hey, that'd be wrong". If I'm dm'ing for you, should you be blindsided with horny tentacle monsters, or should I as a dm think "oh hey, that'd be wrong"? "It's better to ask forgiveness than permission"? Well that's not always true, in fact it is rarely true.

So for the second story, I can see where you're coming from with giving the DM another chance, and yeah, that's probably the considerate thing to do. However, playing devil's advocate here, I think the issue may have been the length of time he was cackling for, if that's an accurate representation of the events. Like, if he truly was laughing that hard to himself for 3-4 minutes over kraken jizz...I dunno...that may have been a bigger red flag than the act itself. Like, clearly he thought that was _hysterical_ so, maybe that was a big enough indicator for the PCs of what to expect going forward, and I can't fault them too much for pulling the plug. Although, yeah talking it out would probably have been better. I'm just saying I get cutting your loses quick when it's clear it's not working out.

That being said, it's not for me to tell people what they do or don't see as red flags. If they don't want to deal with sex stuff in a TTRPG, they have every right to draw a line in the sand. I just hope that those standards had been made clear early on. As with almost every problem in TTRPGs, a session zero fixes a lot of potential problems.

I think it's important that everyone understands what limits people have. The kraken bid clearly went to far for that party. My group uses consent forms that all players must fill out if they wish to join a game so that I know what is and is not ok to use for a game.

A new player who I've never met is someone that I won't know the limits on and so it helps lay a ground on that persons limits. The whole point of having a one-shot before a campaign is you can pick up horrific red flags and ditch people who'd be unsuited for something more long term. Story number 2 really needs more detail to judge the dm. From what was said i see it more as someone telling a bad joke rather than being malicious. Maybe the dm watches shows like rick and morty or adult swim shows where stuff like that is used as "comedy". Doge, you're too forgiving sometimes, which is admirable, but can lead to a lot of bad times in this kind of hobby. The Kraken DM should have read the room. And over voice chat, that means if no one was laughing or loving the horny Kraken idea or the Kraken sperm, he didn't apologize or even check with folks for their opinions. Or rather, he didn't check from the start about what his player's limits were. A DM/GM is in a position of power, players basically having to blindly trust, and it should be DM's primary goal to do his best to ensure everyone's on the same page about mature themes. And while it IS also player's job to speak up, some of them struggle struggle with that, or don't imagine something might suddenly derail in uncomfortable ways. The DM is your host to adventure and storytelling, they need to get to know their players, and as the saying goes, "With great power comes great responsibility." I'm currently GMing my first PF1 campaign for several friends, most of which I've known for years. One friend playing a level 2 investigator, and while he was out lost in the wilderness, came up to a huge wall of dense blackberry bushes, filled with ripe berries, but also many thorns. I honestly expected them to find a way around it, and they couldn't jump it or get under it, so they decided to try and slip through it. I had big doubts that would go well, but their dex and bonuses gave their great roll astounding results. Instead of me getting mad or frustrated, we all laughed a moment, gobsmacked, I congratulated them, then described how they managed to find such a perfect angle to get in through, they somehow didn't get a single scratch. Instead, as he pushed his way past the thick plant, I said he caught the sound of a pleasant feminine sigh, and felt a berry brush across his cheek, leaving a little juice. Everyone lost it, confused but amused, asking what even happened. Hilarious and naughty theories and ideas went flying, with the most popular guess being that the bushes were actually a Dryad, as this region of my homebrew world was rich in otherworldly oddness and fey activity, much like they Feywild. lol

The second story the party took it too far, it was a harmless joke while immature and tasteless still just a joke. The dm wasn't trying to force a fetish or anything just make a joke. Party should have just let him know that no one found it funny and some even found it uncomfortable.

Highly disagree with your opinion on the kraken story. It was highly inappropriate and the DM should have cleared it with the group. Session zero usually includes boundaries such as whether sexual content is ok. What if these players had been young? Would have made the DM only that much more creepy.

I'm sorry doge but I have to disagree with you about the kraken story. No one was laughing with the dm about the kraken juice and he should read mood. The players did the right thing by kicking the fetish playing dm before it got worse. This made me remember another horror story, I don't know if you read it or someone else did, about a dm that said their game was a safe space for female players then does a bait and switch and nearly has all of the characters assaulted and has phallic shaped mushrooms spurt all over them when they got away.

I would have loved to have a dm like kraken , all my dm ever did was say things like “no you can’t play this race/ class ,it’s broken!” Or “no your character can’t wear a kilt even though it’s part of his cultural background!”
