Do I HATE Anything About My 2017 Toyota Tacoma?

What to hate about a Tacoma....? Today I talk about some things I don't really like about my 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road! Some things to look out for if you are looking to buy this truck and some improvements I think could be made to the truck. This is absolutely the best truck I have ever had and my second tacoma ownership experience! I would recommend buying this truck for sure, very comfortable driving experience along with great towing and excellent off road capabilities!

Bros FOURR Speed Your vehicle is a lot newer, but I remember on the 2000ish year Toyota vehicles, there was a mod you could do to allow you to use the rear locker on any mode. Search up the "grey wire mod" I doubt you would be able to do it on something this new, but it is a thing.

The locking diff is a last resort if you are stuck. It is designed that way so stupid idiots don't use it in 2hi for donuts and blow up their differential.

It really should be able to engage locker at anytime. If people want to do burnouts why shouldn't they be able to? It's their truck and their money. Plus sometimes a 2wd locking/lsd rear Is very useful. such as when making a U-turn but the street is narrower than your vehicles turning radius... dump the clutch and whip around then get on with your day. Save the 3 point turns for drivers ed

You know it's a good truck when your complaints are about such minor things. One minor thing that drives me nuts about my '16, I assume it's the same on 17's...the audio controls on the steering wheel. Left & Right are volume, up & down are track selection? Why wouldn't the up button be volume up, down be volume down, and left & right be forward & back? So backwards...

For you 1st item, don't swipe, it was designed to be touched, hence the 2 sensors, you can just pinch that part of the handle and it will lock right away.

Thank you for the comments on the locker, I have got it engaged and yes it's only in 4 low...I really thought it would engage in 2wd, seems like that would make sense as well so you didn't have to go to 4 low. But I've got it working.

Bros FOURR Speed I think the closest thing you will get to what you're looking for in 2wd is if you hit the traction control button once. It engages the auto lsd. It mimics locking the rear by applying the brake to the slipping wheel. It works ok in situations where you want some extra traction for a short period of time.

That's weird that you can't engage the rear locker in 2wd. I picked up the Colorado zr2 and you can engage the rear locker in 2wd or 4wd hi and low. You have a Great truck though. Only reason I got the Colorado was because of the diesel option.

One of the reasons that I didn't want a TRD Off Road. Everyone boasts about the e locker but given that it only works in 4 low, it is essentially useless to me. If the e locker functioned in 2wd, it would be useful for winter driving and when I'm towing my camper into or out of a wet campsite, both situations where the brake controlled fake LSD is really, really bad. The e locker on my brother's F150 functions in 2wd so this is a Toyota thing and something that they got wrong.

As everybody stated below you have to put your truck in 4 low for the rear Locker to work. If you want it to work it at any time simply install a relay and a switch to the rear differential switch this way you can lock it in anytime power is applied.

If you're wanting to lock the rear diff in 2wd I'm assuming it's because you either don't want to have to activate 4wd all the time offroad or because you want to "drift" your truck on the dirt. One solution to this is pressing the traction control button once engaging the limited slip differential which helps out tremendously offroad and also on slippery roads. Another solution is pressing and holding the traction control button for about 5 seconds which will turn off stability control and traction control allowing you to rip out some sweet power slides and doughnuts 🤟 engaging ect pwr also helps out a bunch in either situation. Hope this helps!

Bros FOURR Speed it is only accessible in 4lo do to safety reasons. You used to be able to buy tacomas with 2 high and a locking rear, however higher driving speeds isn't good for locked differentials and people were tearing up their trucks. They made it accessible only in 4lo to keep people from driving on the highway with locked differentials.

A good idea for that third tie down...as well as some other things...is to do what I did. I had a 2011 4-cylinder tacoma that I traded in for a 2017. In my case, the dealer delivered the truck to my hometown - which was 100+ miles away from the dealership, which probably worked in my favor. What I did was take off the third rail (as I knew the new one did't come with it) and kept all the cleats as well as the jack from my old truck. Now I have a third rail, as well as 8 cleats and an extra jack if needed.

I’m sure you’re reading all the comments saying you have to be in 4low for the locker to engage. Same with my 4Runner TRD Pro. I will say that the “auto LSD” in 2wd works really well, I’ve tested it out a few times in some difficult situations and it works really well to keep both tires moving

Bros FOURR Speed, On your Tacoma, I noticed the black coated area on the lower area all around your truck. Is that a decal? paint? plasti dip? I like the look and wanted to do something similar to my 2018 Tacoma. Seams like a great way to protect those areas of the paint from rocks and debries. Thank you for publishing these videos. Sunglass area is available if you exclude electronic craw control option. Also square spot you're pointng are for the sunroof controllers and a-track button for manual transmissions.

I just bought a 17 trd off road and the rear locker only works in 4low unfortunately. Mine has the tech package so that empty space next to the rear locker is where they run the sunroof switches.

Research the "Grey wire mod" for the E locker, the system is set up to only work in 4 low. The mod should allow you to engage the E locker in 2 or 4 wheel. I put a twin stick in my 85 to be able to select low range in 2 wheel drive, this was really good on steep boat ramps at low tide bringing my jet ski's out of the water.

The sensors on the handle have areas on the top and bottom because you’re supposed to pinch it between your thumb and index finger. Locks much faster that way

The locker works in 4Lo only unless you strip and modify the wiring for it. You don't need to put it in neutral either for that to work as long as you're in 4Lo already.

Smart key door handle: you tap, not swipe. Engine start button: it’s purposely out if driver view so it’s not accidentally touched while operating. Diff lock: only works when in 4wd as it’s to well lock the front and rear diffs. Hence why the image shows 4 wheels.

My fj cruiser would not allow dif lock until 4 lo was engaged. I believe it's a safety feature. I'm sure if you contacted a tuner like 5 star, they may be able to change that setting.

i have an older 2002 tacoma and yes only when in 4 low but a mechanics show on spike tv showed how to by pass this and be able to activate it in 2 wheel drive but it involved prying your floor covering on drivers side and cutting the ground wire and grounding it to any metal surface in your truck.

There is some secret stuff if you want to engage your diff lock while in 2wd, however , you can do the research on that in Tacoma World. As for the 4wd nob, I wished it was still a shift lever. My sun glasses fit fine in the QI charging slot, which charges stupid slow(could be my phone).

I have a 2017 Taco and here are my legitimate grips: 1. Cruise control does not keep at setting. it goes up a and down a few miles per hour 2.The head lights are terrible in dark country. i get 10 yards of vision unless I put the brights on 3. The steering wheel used to come down further on the tilt adjustment. Still the best trucks in my opinion and I wouldn't trade it for anything!

Most 4x4 trucks with a rear locker only allow it to be used in 4Lo. Some trucks have automatic rear lockers that will kick in if wheel slip is sensed.

You don't SWIPE the handle to lock it. Just place you finger or thumb on the ridged part and it will lock. Probably, the ridges are on both the top and bottom because the same handle part is used on both sides of the vehicle.

Open your sunglasses up, pull the visor down slightly, and stick both arms above the visor (so the glasses are facing you). I've stored my glasses that way in several vehicles over the years, can't imagine it wouldn't work in the taco.

Nice truck. With the black decals going around the whole lower sheet metal on the body, the truck NEEDS a black rear bumper and it’ll look so much better. It’ll all flow together. Looks kinda strange with the nice black and bright ass chrome. My opinion. Your truck. Definitely one of the benefits of my 16’ sport over this is the sunglasses holder ha.

Most his “issues” are fixed by getting the 6 speed manual. No smart key unlock, no push button start, has a sunglasses holder, and more fun to drive. Also just run a single strap to hold both bikes down in the front. Should work just fine. Love my ‘18 trd off road 6 speed. Zero complaints whatsoever.

I'm assuming putting the 4WD selector above would create a possible reliability issue. Mission critical switches/selectors are better off being closer to what they actually control. I personallly prefer the old-style mechanical lever to an electric switch, because it's that much less likely to ever leave you stranded.

What's annoying to me in my 2017 taco offroad is my phone is not compatible with the wireless charging port and the USB. So I have to bypass it through Bluetooth and a charger through the cigarette lighter. I liked the idea of all the 4wheelin buttons all together.

The locker only works in 4wd low. The 2016 and up have automatic rear traction control so if one wheel slips the truck will apply the brakes on that side putting power to the non slipping side. That being said I agree it would be nice to be able to engage the locker in high range 4wd or 2 wd. But I bet they did not give that option for fear that people would engage it accidentally at speed on hard pavement. Engaging it at high speed or leaving it engaged on hard pavement would very bad and potential catastrophic for the rear diff. It may also be that the electronic locker isn’t designed to handle the shear loads that the mechanism would be subjected to at any higher than low range speeds. So they probably decided to reduce their warranty risk and leave it only as a 4wd low range tool. And FYI, the rear locker also only engaged in 4wd low range on the gen 2 Tacoma’s as well. It was not a Sandra’s feature at all on the gen 1 Tacoma’s. Even though it only can be used in low range, it’s still a valuable tool. It’s gotten me out of deep snow on more one occasion when I’ve gotten stuck even with 4wd engaged. Also has gotten me out of mud when I pushed that button as a last result. So it’s a valuable tool for sure.

How do you turn on the rear locker in what I assume has to be 4WD mode if you have your driving mode set on 2WD? I would imagine this is something that can only be done in 4H or 4L mode? I am also sure your manual will tell you to have it in N first, before putting it into the mode then start driving. Just a thought.

The rear locker only works in 4LO. It will not work in 2HI or 4HI. It's been that way since the 1st Gen Tacomas. And put your sunglasses in the center console. Also, touch the door handle to lock. Don't swipe it. All of this info is in your owner's manual.

JackDanielsCHS08 indeed it does. On first gen tacomas like mine the only way to bypass that is to do whats called the grey wire mod essentially grounding the circuit and fooling the computer into thinking its in 4LO when it isnt allowing you to lock the diff anytime

If one of your rear wheels is slipping, then half the torque is going to go to that wheel and it'll be the only rear wheel spinning. If you lock it, then the wheel with contact will take up all the torque: kzbin.info/www/bejne/naitdohtpZ6IaLM

At the dealer the said to lock the door with my finger. I had to hold my finger on the door handle not swipe, I've never had any problems takes 2-3 seconds.

Nice video ! Only thing that you did nt talk about is the engine!? I also have a Tacoma ,but 2018. Before i had a 2007 TRD,that i really loved. This 2018 is OK,and i got the full loaded model,leather seats ,sunroof ,etc What i hate the most,is the engin and transmission. We all know that when they switched engin,they made a huge mistake,why keep it on ?? Toyota.. To save gas,,i don t believe that we are saving cause it seems like the engin is always strugglin,or misses power on the accelaration,specially at 78 kilometers,,that bothrs me a lot!! My 4 liter in my 2007 was way more powerfull and smoother, no question about it.. Besides that it s a real nice truck,but the engin,again is what i don t like.... . Would i buy another one tomorrow,,probably not.

the space next to the crawl control is where the controls for the sunroof go. So Toyota won't move the 4wd selector there for those that don't have a sunroof. Too much rerouting of major controls.

Also, you can turn on auto limited slip by quick pressing the traction control button in the overhead controls. full tractional control is turned off for a limited slip type rear diff. long press the traction control button to turn all trac off. then a quick press to turn on full trac control again. available in all 4wd moves.

I have the same truck. But mine is a 6 speed. No complaints here bc I read the owners manual. You should feel blessed you are capable of owning such a vehicle, as I am....rather than being so petty. So many people dream of owning these trucks.

I got a manual transmission trd off-road and the constant engine vibration in the steering wheel from the Atkinson cycle engine on a long drive numbs my hands. Dealer said to push the ECT button to reduce the vibration, I said “I have a manual transmission” they said oh.

i had 2012 fj the rear loker only activates when you are in LL (4wd low lucked central diff) and because all toyota rear locking diff are electric you need to move the rear diff a bit so it locks .... air activated diff like the one offered by ARB locks instantly
