I have to agree with Adam on the 3 exercises he chose but I appreciate Sal’s reasoning on why he chose his three. The explanation of the importance of the “squat” movement, “split stance” movement and “hip hinge” movement are why your programs have been so effective in my fitness gains. Your programs are so balanced and structured with the different functions of the body parts so you hit every movement pattern to stimulate the body in the most effective and functional way possible!

Love the question on the tight muscles. I suffered from pain in my upper back on the right side of my spine for years. No massages, rolling out, etc. helped. Saw a chiro & personal trainer who both told me it was tight pectoral muscles. I started rolling out my pec with a lacrosse ball and almost instantly had relief. Now working on strengthening pecs, traps, and rolling out my pecs consistently.

My strength training has got even better in my 40’s. Primarily deadlifting, squat, bench but definitely also regularly adding in box squats, hip thrusts and sledding. The list is long that I use for variety (split squats, zerchers, good mornings, snatch grip deadlift, step ups).

I love that y’all argue on air- it’s a healthy debate and even with the “interruptions” 😂 , it was a model of how to debate in a respectful way with people you trust. That’s important imo. You’ve taught us so much about lifting, nutrition, fitness, science, parenthood, happiness, and good relationships. I think it was very important to weigh in on real issues right now, and I’ll support seeing more of that. You don’t do it often and your podcast is always balanced. But, as a parent who tried to keep her head in the sand for a few years and couldn’t believe “they’re teaching that in schools” and “they’re not really that locked down”, etc, i finally had to open my eyes when moved from Florida to a different state and i saw that the rest of the country does NOT operate in the same way i thought. Freedom seems like a myth now, i fear for my kids at school and the increasing DEI push at work. As parents, it’s important to shed light on. If y’all got James Li ndsey on the podcast that would be so incredible!

Re: moving to Florida, it is happening. A LOT. We still own a home in the panhandle and our tenants are a family who moved from Colorado to take a teaching job. They absolutely love it. I’ve lived in both the panhandle and south Florida and several years ago it was a LOT of New Yorkers moving in, but in more recent years it’s just all California, Colorado, Oregon, Washington. We have kept our residency there (we’re military) as many people do, the tax benefits are phenomenal.

Really solid advice - as you get older even if you want to squat and deadlift, it is hard to do it with the frequency you need. These alternatives can really help you to get the volume in without the same amount of wear and tear and will develop those lifts when you can only do it with less frequency.

Okay, my top 3 lower body, and this is considering my husband in my mind, and his back problems, these affect his back the least. 1. Hip Thrust 2. RDL’s 3. Dumbbell Sumo Squat He can adjust the weights depending on he feels, and I can go hit the 100lb dumbbells. We both win. 😄
