My response to your comments on this video - • Do You Want A Malinois...
Part two of this series - • Do You Want A Malinois...
Have you thought about getting a malinois? While many owners of the breed try to put people off from owning one, and many people admire them in impressive training videos, what are they really like to live with? They can have an off switch with the right training. Do you have to be a super human to own one? NO, I don't believe so. If you're prepared they can make a fantastic dog as long as you put in the training, like any breed!

I never "trained" my malinois, but he will follow any command, including, "go to bed", and "go eat". As a pup, I told him to get off of the couch only one time, and he hasn't gotten on the furniture since. One time, and he gets it. The only word I need to control him is "no". He tells me when he wants to go out, and he used that signal to have me follow him only to discover my senior father in trouble on the stairs, or had fallen. When I see my father, he would lay down instead of going to the back door. He can jump, from a standing position, high enough to see over the neighbors 6 ft. fence. He only poops in one area of the backyard (his idea). Out of all the dogs, and dog breeds I've had, he's the only one to do that. Smartest dog I've ever been around, and I'd swear on a stack of bibles, that, by the look in his eyes, he understood me when I told him my father was dying, and later when I told him my father had passed. He had definite reactions. He used to come in and check my fathers'' chair to see if he had returned from the hospital. He stopped checking after I broke the news of his passing.

I had two Malinois 13 years back. 1 day prior to my motorcycle exam, I prepared everything I needed, including the piece of paper that proved that I passed the Theory. Needless to say the dogs shredded it. I taped all the pieces I found together and went into the exam with that... the examiner said.. What in hell is that ? I said.. my theory certificate, after my dogs had their way with it... Luckily he knew it was valid so I was allowed to proceed with my Exam and luckily I passed. Now I have a new Malinois, 3 months old and the gipper is recovering from Parvo as we speak. Matter of fact... going to pick him up from the Vet right now.

I got my female Malinois at 4 months old. She does not have an off switch and she acts just like your pup. My "Mel" is coming up on 8 months old. Is easy to train. Walks great both loose leash and heal. BUT then she turns into a Tasmanian Devil. She love to tug and retrieve toys. I'm 76 years old and she is the love of my life. If I were working I would not have bought her. I need a protection dog for my wife and me. I walk in front of the supermarket to teach her to behave around people. She is trained enough now that I leave her kennel open at night and she jumps on our bed and cuddles with me. Your video totally describes a Malinois. ThankQ for a great video.

My Malinois, Shadow, was at my side every day for almost 14 years. I was fortunate enough to be able to take him to work with me, and eventually went into semi-retirement. Did a LOT of hiking and camping in the Smokies, and in the Rockies. He never got tired or bored. And always let me know when there were bears about. 👍🏻 Very smart breed. Exactly. You don't *necessary* need to work him/her all day long or four hours and hours. Yes the Malinois is a working dog, not just a normal pet, and can excel in many things but you don't need to take that route if you don't want to. That's what I believe.

I have a malinois (terueren)/German Shepard mix and she's a mouthful. She's now eight years old and people think she's in her youth (so does she). She's a fantastic dog, to say that she's alert and eager to interact, and protect for that matter is an understatement. You have to be fast or otherwise she's ahead of you. She does need to feel that you're the leader, but you'll have to have a gentle touch. She wants to please if she knows what you mean.

Absolutely, I have just had a very traumatic time, that came to a head, 4 weeks ago. I have always wanted to own and train a Belguim Malinois, so I am now the proud owner of a 8 week Malli puppy and she is high octane, so so intelligent but wants to learn and play all the time. She is a huge investment of your love and time but she has helped me refocus my mind on her and pour my love and time into training her, due to her tenacity, to learn and love back. You only get back from your dog, what dedication and love you put in. ‘Juno’ has been my Saviour in so many ways. xx

Great video.... My Malinois, Mala will turn 2 this month. I didn't know a thing about Mals until I got her. There were so many times I regretted getting her and almost gave her away to police dog trainers. I persisted, she began to mind me, and we grew very close. I cannot image life without her now. One thing for sure you have to spend time with a Mal. These dogs do not do well being caged up for 8 hours while you're at work. In fact I believe they become even more rambunctious and harder to control if they are left alone and especially caged up for long periods of time. My Mal spends the day with me, sleeps with me, and most of the time rides with me in my truck. When I have to leave her I leave her with someone. Have I spoiled her..... YES... and she knows it!

She and I can be seen together just about anywhere one or another is at any given time. I have been stopped by Police canine handlers wanting to know what I did to make my Mal so calm... My reply is simple.... spend time with her and let her know that she is special. That and always let her know that I am Alpha in our pack! I am 61 no farm.... not a police officer, but have a calm and very social Malinois.

Absolutely. I watch this because there was an incident with a Belgian Schäferhund in my neighbourhood (I live in a German city, ca. 250 000 inhibitants, close to the centre) The dog escaped from his owners flat, once outside it headed right for the playground about 50 meters away, hurt 4 children and one adult women, got wounded by police shooting as they couldn't get hold of him. Then the wounded dog returned to the flat where the owner was able to put him on a leash and later agreed on putting the dog down, as the injuries were very bad. I don't want to blame the poor dog but this moron keeping him in a small flat on a street full of houses, kids, other dogs etc. Just to tell everything: The kids aged 4 to 11 had minor injuries as well as the woman. God bless.

Thank you for your answer! The problem I see with keeping these dogs in a city like mine is: Where do you go to train your dog? You need a car and you need to have access to some dog sport facility outside the city, and you don't get that for free. The dogowner i talked about did none of this. He took the dog out for a pee and a shit, and thats it.

There's some videos of her on my channel. :) My male is a working/showline cross and he's a lazy bum in the house so I think it's easier to find a GSD for a quieter lifestyle than Malinois. In general, there are some Mal's that have great off switches too and a lot of that is training.

First it was a bit of change in everydays life because of her insane energy and spirit but now that we've trained her (up to 3 hours a day - training and free play outside) shes the best dog in the world. Her willing to learn and work is just crazy but it keeps us going and being active everyday. To those wo are working in a 9-to-5 I wouldn't recommend getting a Mal - you should bring a lot of time otherwise this breed is going to get "psycho" and "chaotic" like you said in the video! FACT! My neighbors are just retired and took a Groenendael, which is also a Belgian shepherd, looks like the Tervuren in black. They have found something amazing. Every day at 2pm, after his long walk the dog takes his blanket and takes it in front of the TV. He's adicted watching Tom and Jerry, don't put on another cartoon, because he turns his head. He watches TV for 3 hours and that gives them the change to go shopping. Also if you ask him to go to the beach which he loves, he doesn't move, you can show him his favorite toy, but when he's watching TV he doesn't come. Amazing dogs, but they aren't suitable for someone who works a lot. They need a lot of affection and someone with them.

My wife and I have two just turned a year old - brother and sister. They are certainly a handful, I had forgotten what they are like as puppies. We lost our Malinois last July and my wife absolutely had to have a dog and I like a nut said we should get two. Well our lives have not been the same; they absolutely have to be kept active or they get into mischief. Everything belongs to the female, she scopes out what she wants to get into, collaborates with her brother to keep us distracted while she sets out to take what she wants. They are a beautiful breed, smart and are a lot of work. At 68 and 62 respectively, a little more that we bargained for.

A beautiful Malinois, but that dog is in charge. I'm almost 69 and have had mine for just over a year - he's almost 15 months. He really wants to be good and is smart as heck, but he doesn't need 24/7 attention. Like any dog they adapt, but I also don't leave him alone for hours at a time. A couple of walks, a couple of outside fetch games with some hard running, some play catch inside and some training (he knows about 18 "tricks" - I'm including come, wait, stay, leave it type commands along with shake, go around, high five type stuff and more words than I realize) each day and he is happy. We've done 3 obedience classes and 1 agility class, mostly to socialize with other dogs. I had two Bouviers before him and you just have to be in charge. He wants to please. Big personality!! But they do need attention, just not what some try to make it seem.

I agree that she does not give off a leader vibe in the video but nor does most of the population. Many people get dogs because "they saw them in a movie" and have no clue what living with a dog really means. Look at 101 dalmations, Bethoven, etc. Many many people went and got the dog without understanding their history or breed traits and as a result many dogs was put in shelters or put down. I personally own a cross breed German Shepard x English bulldog. I am still in contact with the seller of my now 3 year old dog and I am the only original buyer from a litter of 8 pups due to the other owners unability to handle the bulldog x shepard mix. The rest of them had aggression problems the owners could or would not handle. What I mean is that there are dogs not suitable for new dog owners that lack experience ad time to spend with them and train them. That along with lack of leader skills and you have a tornado waiting to blow. Resulting in more abandoned dogs...

This lady is right, I have a Mal as a working dog (K9 Blaze). K9 Blaze is everything she has explained. I throw, and throw, and throw, and throw a ball and this dog does not tire. They are EXTREMELY fast dogs. When dealing with them, it's quite certain you will be bit, HARD. I also have 2 Shepherds. As I have always said, The worse thing about a Mal and/or Shepherd is the best thing about them. Everywhere I go they are there (including but not limited to the bathroom). However if I ever need them, they aren't to far away. Do your research on the dog your getting, make sure if the animal fits you and your lifestyle.

I have a kelpie x also, she is a rescue i got her when she was 5/6 or 7 and now she is 15. She still runs ( canters) up our very steep 1km drive 1-3 times a day, big walk and hour of ball chasing and then she is happy. She also goes with me everywhere and never left alone. With these breeds if you cant do the exercise and mental stimulation they become depressed. No life for any working dog. People need to know this.

She’s strong, tolerant of cold and hot weather and a very durable dog.

We adopted what turned out to be a 4 year old Mal a little over 5 months ago (the rescue had her listed as a German Shepherd/Husky mix). She's very chill (a total couch potato) who doesn't play with toys. She's not a chewer either. She can be destructive (mostly food-oriented), so we have had to start crating her when we're gone and at night (I give her a frozen peanut butter filled Kong, which keeps her busy). She's incredibly well trained (thanks to whoever trained her!), and has decided that I am her person.

Envy is just beautiful and I am very, very glad she's YOURS. :) About five years ago I rescued a GSD/Heeler mix who was my first experience with a high drive dog. Your Envy makes me think of her. I'd had GSDs and even a Border Collie before and had done some training and tracking (hobby only). I've even had a Jack Russell/Dachshund mix (part dog/part wild thing). Story joined our house at ten weeks old--was a dream to housebreak, super easy to teach the basics. But she never, ever, ever, ever, ever slept. And she had to have something in her mouth all the time--on walks, in the house, etc. She destroyed bedding, ate socks, and chewed up all her toys. Story loved fireworks! The boys would take her outside with them on the 4th of July and had to hold her back to keep her from grabbing the bottle rockets. The more explosions, the happier she got. We are seasoned dog owners and love a challenge, but this? Good grief . . . My oldest son graduated from college, landed a dream job, and moved out. Story went with him. It turned out to be a perfect match. He gets her and is not put off by her complicated disposition. He tells me that at five years old, she's finally sleeping at night--sometimes. And she's stopped chewing up her toys--mostly.

I have a female mal I adopted out of the puppy program at Lackland AFB 15 years ago. I am pushing 70 and have had dogs all my life, and my mal is absolutely the smartest dog I've ever owned. She washed out of the puppy program after finishing all her basic obedience because she could not tolerate loud noises....like thunder, guns, airplanes, etc.....definitely a problem for a military working dog. So, we adopted her and she adapted to us right away. She had plenty of kids and grandkids to play with, a never-ending food bowl, and her own door to the yard so she could be in or out as she wished. Sadly, she probably won't last much longer. But, I can honestly say she's the best dog I've ever owned. Two things I would add to the video above: mats are very sensitive: a good scolding is all mine ever needed for discipline--go lightly. Second, they need room. Do not get one of these dogs if you live in an apartment or even a small house. Lastly, these are NOT get and forget dogs. They require you frequent and ongoing attention. If you can do that, I'll bet they are the best dogs you will ever own.

sad to hear that, I cannot imagine myself more happy without this dog :), If you appreciate this dog character and dynamic and start taking advantage of it you'll see the positive result. I know people that took GS/Malinois only for their great look (which is the worst thing you wanna do). If people on the street asking me about the breed I've got I'm not seeing that this is Belgian Malinois in order to avoid "bad breeding" in the future -> the same that happen to the GS - you know people wanna something -> marker make it cheaper -> no one care about the breeding and possible genetic defects. If you want a dog first thing you need to do is to search through the character if their match your need! and NOT how it looks like!.

Thanks for making this, but I am going to have to say that a dog that snatches something out of your hand needs one to train them. It is not the dog's fault, even less so the breed's. I own a male malinois and even at a year old, bursting with energy, he is well-behaved. He surely keeps me on my toes, but in a good way = to get his exercise. He is a quick learner and extremely attentive. Of course Malionois are not a golden retriever that will simply lay around wagging their tail 80% of the day. They do need their daily dose of good physical exercise (at least 3 hours), but they are not destructive if the owner put in time and effort to train them and to exercise them.

i agree with alot of dogs this would apply, but super smart dogs sometimes not. I had a very smart rotty/shepard who was very highly trained. In work mode he never made a mistake, was perfectly behaved off lead in any and every situation , but free time we played hard included tug and snatch and chasey and he needed it. feed it raw and get in hands with your butcher. Get lamb/beef offcuts of spine, neck and ribs. Give according to the dogs intake of daily food a neck to chew on. It occupies them aswell as draining their chewing needs and also keeps their teeth clean. Chewing paper etc will become less appealing and hopefully cure your problem. A bone a day saves your furniture hurray!😁

I am my Malinois’ 3rd owner. And she’s trained!!! If that tells you anything. They are a lot of work. I dedicate many hours a day to exercise, training, structure, boundaries and routine. And I work! I also have a Vizsla which I thought was a lot of work. Wrong! My day revolves around the Malinois. Everyday! Her first two owners could not put the work in and thought they were just getting a regular service dog. Wrong. They were not active enough for her. I take her almost everywhere and pretty much never leave her alone. I’ll have to say my Vizsla is helpful with draining the Malinois’ energy though. They are both close to 3 years old so they both are still very energetic and playful with each other. But there are so many factors with a Malinois. Their prey drive is intense. Every animal in my neighborhood is in danger. If she is not in heel position or a command she will chase and kill. She’s also mouthy. I have to warn my son’s friends not to play with her and get her too excited because she will nip. She wants to herd anyone running. I don’t recommend a Malinois for anyone who does not have the time to train them and put in the work. They are not your average dog. But I love mine and my Vizsla more than anything!

Good video - we just adopted what appears to be a Malinois pup from the HS here in Grand Cayman. He is 3.5 months. Will be a handful but look forward to training him

What a ball of energy! I'd LOVE a dog like that if I had a countryside house and a woods/fields, where to train it. But in the city setup - it would be a nightmare for both of us.
