If you ever want to rescue or raise a dobie from a pup to adult... you're in for a wild ride!! Intelligence and a big❤ is a trait that makes it all worth it! I highly recommend you adopt not one but two!! Male and female you'll never regret it 🤔!

@Vincent Mitchell - Sorry for your loss Vincent, our dogs become part of the family and it really hurts when they leave us. I just lost my G-shepherd in August too, she was 13 yrs old. I know this is a video about the characteristics of the Doberman but John pretty much described my dog too, she was a very loyal and loving girl. I realize that a considerable amount of time has passed but sometimes when I see flashback photos pop up on my iPhone featuring my shepherd, I either smile or cry depending on my mood, I still miss her. I’m researching Dobie’s right now bc my sister has always wanted one but I needed to know if they are family friendly and by the description in this video, they truly are. It’s not my objective to make that girl cry on her birthday but who doesn’t get emotional over receiving a new puppy! LoL I’m thinking I might like to own a Dobie myself, we’ll see. 😊🌻

Anytime I come home from being out, he is right there to greet me with a squeaky tou in his muzzle! Every time. Now the big dog has learned that and she started doing it too!!! So cute. I’m happy to say my 18 month old rescue Dobie exhibits most of these behaviors! He came to me a hyper, fearful and reactive 1 year old. I cracked the code about 3 months ago (lots of exercise, structured home environment, basic e-collar training), and he’s becoming a calm, affectionate, playful and confident companion. As I expose him to more adventures (swimming last weekend, above tree line hiking this weekend, car camping over the 4th), our bond deepens, and he becomes more calm and affectionate. While we are still working on a few problem areas, he now approaches most new people, dogs and situations with inquisitive calm while looking to me for guidance.

I survived being stalked, taken against my will and raped 12 years ago. The person was caught and convicted, went to prison for only 11 years. I didn't get my Doberman till a year after. He was 2 and rescued from a bad situation. I had to earn his trust, and love. Once I did, he was everything you showed and more in your Videos. We worked hard to train a Dobie who lived in a 4x6 kennel and under weight by 15 lbs. Oh my Gosh. Best dog I ever had. I have been Broken Hearted since. I don't feel safe and the PTSD keeps happening. Now the person who attacked me is out of prison. I look at Rescues and Puppies always, but don't have the funds to buy one yet. My American European Dobie that passed was exactly like this but my European Dobie I got at 8 weeks who turned 20 months old 2 days ago, well she's a monster. She's swallowed a stuffed animal whole that after 6k surgery looked like it was brand new. She's always getting dinged up with cuts and bruises and scratches and once a big cut across her chest. And she does all this living inside the house and in our backyard she fell in the pool twice. She has had 2 great trainer's over months and she is stubborn. That said a ball, any and every ball she will play with around the clock. If I'm tired from throwing the ball, she'll run around the yard or inside and play with it by herself. She does love massages, she does put everything in my lap, she does sit with her back to me to let me massage her back and neck and face. Yes, she's loved and spoiled but gee.... help!

Thank you so much for sharing this video. I grew up learning from the early childhood about how „dangerous“ dobermans are. Your videos show us, that it’s not that simple. A couple of years ago a stray pup of no distinct breed showed up in my yard and refused to leave. I spent a lot of time with her, especially during the first two years. Today, while watching your video about how a doberman shows his love, I was reminded of her, because she used so many of those „doberman“ ways to show her love. Thank you for making us love dobermans. You clearly are making this world a better place!

I can honestly say that I have experienced every one of the topics you mentioned with each of my 4 Dobes over the years. Two scenarios come to mind from my most recent boy, Enzo, where first, he loved my wife dearly so much so, he would literally eat her pantyhose when she was away (thank god he was always able to pass them naturally) and second, I woke one evening in the middle of the night in a mass of sweat, having a nightmare of a tremendous weight bearing down on me and not being able to move only to find my 110lb Enzo passed out on top of the covers and in between my legs literally causing me to be pinned to the bed! Just watching your video, with Arlo, just takes me back to all my treasured memories of my darling boy Toby, who I lost on the 27th of December 2018. Lymphoma, aged nearly 11. There isn't an hour that goes by of any day when I don't think of him.

OMG I am so happy I stumbled upon your videos and website John! I've never owned a Doberman before and here I've been worried about his seemingly excessive eye contact and sensitivity to my every emotion, action, word, move lol and omg you nailed every sack of cement move my Doberman has to show me loves me. I honestly was thinking I was doing something wrong and raising/training an overly dependent whiny dog! He is extremely focused and alert with what is going on around me in the home environment checking out window activity while close to me etc but at the same super relaxed with me. The leaning on the legs, the need to stick like Velcro, his super in-tune awareness and emotional state was really making me think I was failing as pack leader. I am starting to understand the protective nature of these dogs and how their high alertness/awareness is not synonymous with 'tense' or headed to 'hyper`aggressive' lol. I've owned GS before and all I can say is that Dobermans are just wow. Your articles and videos are so appreciated!

My son had a red Doberman, living with us. I would sit in a raised bar type stool in the evening and he would run by jump up and bump my ear. Of course treats would follow, how could they not?

My Dobe loved to roughhouse with me. Her favorite was when I went and sat on the grass out in the yard. She would run all the way around and hit me full force, biting my arms. She would get more and more excited until she opened up my arm. Then I would say 'no more' and we would walk back inside, me showing her my bleeding arm on the way in and explaining 'no more, Boss is bleeding.' She was a good sport about it!

Yes! Mine is my little shadow! I know she loves me because she copies me and we have a mutual understanding of boundaries and needs. We take turns making decisions on walks (which way to go, when to stop) and she often understands rules because of how close we are. Behaviorism aside, this dog learns from a social learning theory approach.

Thank you so much for all the videos you make. They are so informative. I live in Norway and have a Dobermann that just turned 1 year. He does all of the things you've mentioned, but I haven't understood that it's all coming from love. No I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes and feeling very much ashamed. Because I've felt he's been A LOT sometimes. Thank you fso much for making me understand him better!! Dobermans are really different from many other breeds.

Great Video! Sooooo true! Bella is a year old. She does all of the behaviors you mentioned. Her eye contact and constant looking back at me when she is playing or fetching is amazing. Coco is a bit older and was a rescue. Although I got him as an adult Doberman, he engages in most of the behaviors you accurately described. I'd say this video must be in the top five of all the videos you have done. 🙂

Also, I've heard that (from a professional dog trainer on KZbin) you should not let your dog get in the bathroom with you or get in your way in the kitchen while you cook or worse, follow you everywhere (too often, at least). That might cause separation anxiety, which means that, more often than not, when the dog will be left alone for too long, he's going to get extremely anxious and you might end up coming home to a wrecked house. It's important to set boundaries with your pooch and teach him that it's not the end of the world to have his "alone time." A great tip is to never make a fuss over you leaving, like telling your dog "goodbye, don't worry, I'll be back soon, etc." Leave treats in his bed or something that will allow him to associate his "alone time" with something pleasant, like treats, etc.

Picking up my first doberman on Monday morning. I got her from my local pound on Thursday and the vet is fixing her right now. Pound says she's been there 3 months and nobody wanted her. She appears to be a fawn with yellow eyes. About 9months to a year old. Wish me luck, my elderly labrador picked her so hopefully they become good friends

Good to see your back, and with a beautiful baby as well as Arlo. As always your video is "SPOT ON"! I had to put down my almost 11 year old blue girl, Leanah at the end of April. Still bawling! As you can see from her name ... Lean... ah... yes she was a Leaner/Velcro girl. My heart is still ripped in half the other half is left for my 2 1/2 year old blue boy... who is still a puppy brain. He is also spot on with your video. So much so that it is a wonder my arm is still on the keyboard as I am typing this. He is not a Warlock/or King but he is 33 inches from floor to shoulder and weighs 149 pounds! As a puppy he was always totally off the charts (growth charts). Not fat just a very large boy and being 5'1 he is totally on voice commands as there is no way I could ever hold him back. He is a huge lover boy and yes I am his protector! LOL Thank you once again for making me smile.... great video... love Arlo!

I have a German Pinscher (one of the breeds that helped create the Dobie), and this is every single bit my boy. Absolutely every one of these traits in a smaller package. He's my true momma's boy, super affectionate and attached, loyal, protective and playful, handsome and smart, and best boy and lovie. There aren't many videos that explain German Pinscher behavior so I watch many doberman videos because so many traits have cascaded. Thanks for another terrific video!
