This movie is great because of the correction to the problems of WandaVision. The first 5 or 6 episodes of that are so good, Nick said it’s a nuanced character story that doesn’t have to rely on fighting, but that show devolves so far into big unnecessary fight scenes of characters flying around with energy blasts, I thought it totally lost it’s way in the end. And worst of all, it has no consequences. This is the fallout that we were missing from the end of WandaVision. She IS the villain of that story, she tortured thousands of people for months on end to the point they want to kill themselves. There is no way for her character to come back from that, so I love that they make her this ominous villain here and it lends itself to the horror vibes here so well. Stephen’s story fits in a little wonky but I think they keep it moving well enough to tie it all together.
@Alex_Logan222 жыл бұрын
The fighting was really just in the last episode. The show was just a fantastic character study, it didn't need more consequences, she sacrificed everything and isolated herself from everyone, going to jail would've potentially endangered others. What she did to Westview was outside of her control and will, done within a severe and blinding depression, and once she realized it she fully rectified it and sacrificed the things she's now hellbent on obtaining because of a cheap plot device she's only reading to better understand her powers just happens to be corrupting her. What happened to Westview's residents sucks yes, but Wanda's persona isn't to blame for crazy powers/circumstances and she can't be killed anyway.
@michaelpduggan2 жыл бұрын
@@Alex_Logan22 Wanda absolutely knows what’s happening. When Monica starts to question her, she violently blasts her out of town. She is aware pretty early on that she is hurting people and keeps doing anyway for selfish reasons. If we had never seen this person before and we watched this show through Monica’s eyes, we would absolutely see her as a brutal villain. Yeah she’s been through things, but that doesn’t mean you’re allowed to create your own personal Guantanamo Bay just to feel better. All of these things are very interesting angles to explore in a show, which is why it’s all the more disappointing that they abandon all that momentum for stupid comic book magic shit and crappy fight scenes
@Alex_Logan222 жыл бұрын
@@michaelpduggan Monica herself vouched for Wanda as she understood why she was doing this and didn't blame her for it. Wanda also protected her from harm as she blasted her away. Wanda was subconsciously responsible for doing the things she did yes, but Wanda herself wasn't cognitively aware of what was even really going on or how any of it started, she was just enjoying her happiness while her mind blocked/protected her from the truth. And even then her subconscious grief was never a murderous psychopath anyway, Vision and Monica was able to reason with her and get through to the real Wanda even as she was trapped under blinding grief. Once she woke from her reality and became aware of everything, she put everything back to how it was, sacrificed all her happiness including her kids' lives, and isolated herself from everyone to study herself. As a person, she really didn't do anything wrong of her own fruition. She was like a drunk person who never drank, she's no different from Bucky as far as bad luck circumstances go.

I think one of the problems is that they didn't into enough detail about Chthon's corrupting influence. Yes Wanda did sort of resolve her story arc in Wandavision, but reading from the Darkhold destroys people's minds. We get like one mention of that from Sinister Strange and an off-hand mention of Chthon from Wong, but that's it. Like it does not take much exposure to that book to drive someone completely insane. Read the Darkhold comic event if you're curious. Start from 'Darkhold Alpha Vol 1' with Dr. Doom on the cover.

She's never really been to blame for anything she's done though, it would be like saying Bucky is irredeemable. The Hydra brainwashing was just a much better storytelling device than the Darkhold. The problem isn't that it wasn't believable, but that it was a bad creative decision, or bad execution at least, after all the nuance and care taken with WandaVision. I expect Wanda to be a villain but I don't want storytelling to go backwards. A very easy work around would've been to just have a variant Wanda be the villain, and our Wanda would've still been much weaker without the Darkhold knowledge plus her holding back, so that the villain Wanda still has the same affect. It would've also been a good duality of a Wanda who just sacrificed her kids versus one who's doing everything she can to have them.

@@Alex_Logan22 Wanda has always been to blame for her actions. She knew full well what she was doing in WandaVision and her grief doesn't excuse her. She completely broke after the events in Westview and Darkhold is merely amplifying her feelings.

@@MikeAvoo She didn't break after Westview, she broke when seeing the property Vision bought for them. Wandavision did NOT have a true resolution and neither did Wanda. Her character needs this movie and her arc is still far from complete.

A very middle-of-the-pack movie to me. Elizabeth Olson as Wanda was the standout character. The movie is a little messy and the CGI is pretty bad for way too long. The movie's last third (once Wanda arrives in universe 838) is awesome. Captain Britain's and Marvel's death were really cheesy and I really didn't understand why everyone completely dismissed Wanda's powers (literally being able to bend reality), but the chase scene had some great horror vibes. Unfortunately, this movie contained way too much cheese and often reminded me of why I dislike most of Spiderman 1-3. It had some standout moments (music fight, dream walking the corpse of other Dr.Strange, Wanda's arc in the other universe), but the rest was just not good or consistent. And the ending being solved by the typical "believe in yourself"...rolled my eyes to the back of the head. 7/10. Solid movie and entertaining, but that's it.

Forget the fact that this is a horror film. Forget the mass murder and demons. The scariest thing Raimi does here is make you look inward and ask yourself, “are you happy?” I’m sorry, but the fucking guitar riff with Zombie Strange using demons as his cape is the coldest thing ever. Holy shit, Raimi took Disney’s “family friendly” studio money and made a horror film. This film gave me Michael Myers Wanda, and I’M ALL FOR IT. That was amazing in every way possible. I think it could’ve used 15 extra minutes in the runtime to allow some breathing room, but that’s all I can really complain about in terms of structure. This movie is all gas and no breaks. Raimi is a madman. God I missed his style, soul, and heart so much.

100%. You can make a Perlmutter-era MCU film that adheres to a formula and I forget the next day. Or you can just let Raimi go off the reservation, risk dividing the audience but ultimately end up with something crazy, soulful and weird. I’m all for it. I want Raimi to do Strange 3.

Its just kinda hard to believe that he would go through the effort of willingly corrupting himself and in his desperation, that's his plan that he fully believes is going to work. Nick is literally the first person I’ve seen complain about Wanda’s role. I think she’s clearly the best part of the film, and her motivations are, for me, clearly built with a through line of desire for her family.
@Alex_Logan222 жыл бұрын
The problem is it goes against the sacrifices she would make, which they established, so it felt like a cheap plot device was used to turn her into a villain, and WandaVision was all about clever/compelling writing so it was a huge drop for her and her arc. Olsen still did an amazing job working with what she had, but it was significantly weaker than what she just had prior.

Wanda was my big issue in this movie. We had one glimpse of her with the dark hold in the WV post credit after all that character development and she went FULL heel this movie and was killing indiscriminately. Did not like that massive shift, she basically proved Agatha right.

Nah, it’s the second most common complaint about the movie (after Raimi’s style).
@AlexLove6312 жыл бұрын
I don’t understand the complainants because the turn was strongly hinted at during the final wandavision scene with her creating a hex with an illusion of her for the outside world while she was really studying the dark hold. Her turn and motivation made complete sense, and it was awesome to see Elizabeth Olsen be absolutely terrifying. And you could see during Charles’ visit in her mind that she’s still there deep, deep down. But clearly the dark hold was corrupting her.
@Alex_Logan222 жыл бұрын
@@AlexLove631 It was hinted at that she was using Astral projection to study the book while laying low, not that she created an exterior illusion for Strange or others. The Wanda Xavier was trying to save was the one from his universe, to free her from evil Wanda’s control.

I just rewatched both Wandavision and Doctor Strange and I am sorry Nick is so wrong, I feel like Sam Raimi style fits perfect for this. You get the weird trippyness of Doctor Strange, you get the quirkiness and weird humor of Wandavision, and you have Wanda with these weird powers acting as the Villian (which reminds me of the start of Age of Ultron) and thus the horror elements. And if you watch Wandavision right before this, you will understand why she is doing what she is doing. It feels like Nick has goldish syndrome here, just forgetting what all this stuff was like and how it built to this. There is some Sam Raimi style that you either like or don't like, the specific camera movements and music cues, but the overall tone and pacing works really well to combine all these elements.

It's obvious now how Spider-Man: NWH would have been different. America was learning magic at the end of this. So I think the spell in NWH would have just been a "forget me" spell cast by America, who screws it up and accidentally uses her multiverse power at the same time. I imagine the thing with Wong disappearing from the Sanctum was originally both Strange and Wong having to quickly leave to fight a monster or something, leaving Peter in the Sanctum with America. It's such a shame because that whole section of NWH with Strange acting out of character is pretty weak, but America doing it makes perfect sense. It would be good if we eventually get an optional "America cut" of NWH but I know that will never happen. Also, that whole thing with snow being in the Sanctum - I would put money on that being there because there was supposed to be set up for her powers for people who hadn't seen MoM and she would accidentally open a portal and let the snow in that way. I bet that's where those shoveling interns came from - that was meant to be her.
