I appreciated Kevin's, for lack of a better word, pushback. It made for good a discussion/debate. I think he always takes into consideration what the intent was of the writers, even if he didn't necessarily agree with it. A lot of times people get so caught up in their own ideas and wants for a show or character that they kind of neglect to thoroughly analyze what is shown on the screen, and trying to discern from that what the point of those choices was. He can agree or disagree with it, but he still makes an effort to completely understand where those choices came from. It's a good balance of being subjective AND objective. Always appreciate his takes!

I appreciate Kevin’s defense of Karli and the Flag Smashers but I completely disagree. If this was a two hour movie, fine, I’d be okay with the fact that they just moved the plot along. But in a multi-episode series, there’s no excuse. Karli should have been way more compelling than she was. I think a flashback of her during the blip, and seeing her lose her home would have gone a long way in making her sympathetic. Show don’t tell.

Question for Andy and the rest of everyone: for the "buddy" relationship between walker and bucky, I didn't see that at the end. I saw bucky run after walker when walker went on his own to go after the flag smashers to make sure he doesn't do anything wrong like he did before. The app capture was all Buckys plan and the antagonistic remarks between bucky and walker was consistent throughout the show. I don't see the buddy relationship there at all

It was just too quick of a "water under the bridge". I think the main complaint (at least IMO) is that John walker and his downward spiral was so compelling, and the payoff was meh...not even meh, just non existent. I respect all different opinions, and in regards to the flagsmashers I agree with a majority of the criticisms about that storyline. But Andy and Greg are way too down on the more important parts of the finale (and nitpicking the smaller stuff too much), like for example, the Speech. I'm just gonna reiterate everything Paris had to about it, in the finale review. It needed to happen out in the open like that. There wasn't any reason to have Sam wait to give that speech in front of a podium. For what? What would it have accomplished any differently? Because he'd just be speaking to a crowd of blank faces. Not to mention, we've seen Steve give impromptu speeches like that, and those instances are actually less realistic. If anything it makes more sense for it to happen in front of the cameras, where people are gonna actually stop and listen. And even then, it's not a fully uninterrupted speech. He has a dialogue with those people, that just happened to be caught on camera, that those people actually make several attempts to walk away from. Like I said, I appreciate these reviews and discussions, I just wish they were more balanced. There could be a wider variety of opinions on this show, instead of yall just echoing each other all the time and nitpicking the smaller stuff. That's why Paris was such a breath of fresh air. He brought a fresh and interesting perspective that was really missing on this show. He should definitely be on more often.

My favorite aspect of the Flag Smashers and John Walker is that even with one representing anti government sentiments and one representing nationalist sentiments, Sam still finds himself agreeing with their separate causes but disagreeing with their separate approaches. It paints quite the unbiased truth: it’s not that governments are inherently evil or that rebellions are inherently good; it’s way more case by case than that, and Sam has the time and patience to take on these issues “case by case,” just like Steve.

@@X5J2UY That's a fair point but I don't think I would call it lazy, it just seems like a very logical way to close out his character. Idk I just seem to agree and enjoy a lot of what Nick brings to the discussion, after all he did study film (as far as I'm aware from shows etc) and seems very in to the medium. That's a good thing about the medium, is that it can and is often supposed to be interpreted differently by the individual viewer.
@X5J2UY3 жыл бұрын
@@evanjones6657 Idk. I guess, I just don't see why it would align with his development. Why should he be broken at the end of the series in your opinion? Yes, he lost his best friend but was also sensible and honorable enough to face his friends family. Loss should not break a man like him, who was in many wars and surrounded by death. What somewhat broke him was losing his title as Cpt America and military honors, but he was clearly not a bad guy. Selfish, big ego and less emphatic, but not bad. That became even more clear, when he decided to not go through with his revenge and saved the senators in the truck. He clearly can somewhat prioritize others over himself or his own desires. And killing one man doesn't make you a monster right away in the Marvel universe. Tony Stark was literally at fault for the destruction of Sarkovia and thousands of lives, yet we don't blame him. Walkers ending was quite fitting to me (even though it could have been shot on a better set). His whole life he was in service and controlled by his country which he criticizes in ep. 5. Then he was forced out of it, just to return to this position as US Agent and probably being controlled even more by Madame Hydra (or whoever he is). I mean, why should his wife leave him? Because he killed a terrorist? He has definitely killed a lot of people in other warzones as well.
@evanjones66573 жыл бұрын
@@X5J2UY To be clear I don't think he should have necessarily lost his wife or anything I just think he should have ended up in a darker place, both mentally and physically (scene didn't look great), given his trajectory in the past few episodes. He seemed to make a pretty swift turn in character, which to me didn't feel totally believable, especially for someone with such strong traits, heigthened by the serum. I just think he should have been more broken at the end of the season as it may have made for an even greater set up going in to a second season (or movie plot point), setting him up to be a great antagonist or third character in a triangle of conflict. Also did he not pretty much lie to Lemar's family, not very honorable in my eyes. Anyway, just my opinion and like I said that's what is great about the medium, everyone gets to have their own interpretation and thoughts on it. It is a form of art after all!

I think you're assessment of the John Walker lacks a reference point 1 in terms of his anger/character change ( or growth) maybe this is due to comics or other media in the way they portray the "bad guy" in a maniacal, hysterical "this guy must be evil" way. Which then takes away from the reality of how a character would be, especially in a live action portrayal, i.e even when you or I get angry we're not constantly in that state so I didn't understand why you expected him to be like that in every scene there after. I feel you should understand that he doesn't view himself as a bad guy because he's technically not. All the way up until that point he's done what he always has and been rewarded by his country for his actions. If you think all this time in the military and he hasn't killed numerous people you're deluding yourself. The only difference between that last kill & the ones before, is you didn't see them (the MCU worlds as well) but that board of council men and women that striped him of everything did, and they rewarded him every time. If you're ever been thrown under the bus at work times that by ten and add a couple of zeros 2 the motivation behind his actions. Some people are nurses some scientist, firefighters, carers...... he's a soldier this is what he's great at and it's the way he sees he can help the world, so obviously he would say something like ”I'm back” don't get me wrong it seems a bit cheesy however based on his character and he was around his wife (loved ones) at the time. You can't say cool shit 100% of the time (then it wouldn't be realistic 🤷🏾♂️)

We see them wrong Sam and Bucky by giving the shield and title to someone else without their input, them shifting all the blame to Walker when things didnt look good for them, they ignored Sharon's situation for years, they caused the Flag Smashers to form, and the final confrontation Sam had in the series was with them, not any of the other bad guys. for this reason, I personally feel it should have been higher on the list.

I know they had to edit out major story lines due to COVID that might have disrupted the flow but felt Watchmen delivered on these themes in a masterful way. I don't think these two can be compared. Watchmen did a good job of cataloging the past and dealing with the present. FATWS took a brief look at the pass through the eyes of the MCU but focused more on the present and where Black folks go in the future and how we define ourselfs in America given it's past. Race, particularly in America is so broad and complex that you can tackle it in many different ways. And for the MCU a property that doesn't do deep dives on the themes they tackle I thought this was crafted surface level look at race, capitalism, communism and imperialism and the conflict those things breed. All while having a dude with a metal arm and dude with wings become bros though out. Also factoring in the covid complication this pretty good job even though the ending was bad.

I think they both did really well, and there is something expected from Watchmen to hit on those kinds of subjects. But from Marvel and Disney, this kind of thing is not expected at all. As much as I loved this show, I wonder how the writing relationship is between each series/films' writers and Kevin Feige. I feel like we would have gotten a far more broken John Walker, a more satisfying conclusion to Bucky's arc, more humanizing of the flag smashers and their fight, a smarter reveal of Sharon as the power broker instead of the dumbed down reveal we got, and a more satisfying and "MCU" approach to Sam's speech at the end if Spellman had a little more say in the writing.

The speech works because it’s in the suit in front of the people. If it was switched to in congress you lose the suit and the senate gains control of the narrative they can interrupt him and he can’t interrupt them without looking hostile

I totally get all the criticisms in this, and for some of it I actually agree (Walkers ending, flag smashers, etc). But I think it's important to also have an equal amount of time dedicated to discussing the super awesome stuff that we are all pumped about. If we just focus on the negative it becomes a less enjoyable conversation I feel.

John walker in my understanding suffers with delusion of grandeur. All he wanted is to be a hero, and have a title, and in his mind he is and got it. When he gets discharged and his honers getting stripped off, he feels lost for a moment and then Contessa steps in reassuring him that he still can be a hero no matter what his actions were. That’s why he shouts “I’m back”, he gets his delusional title backend and the chance to be supreme. But, what do I know, I could be wrong

Just finished the opening 4 minutes and I'm so damn glad I couldn't listen to it at work and am watching it here. Holy shit, Greg.

Kevin really do be the minion of every antagonist in a Disney movie

I feel like them wanting a fully broken John Walker is a very short term mindset, in terms of character where JW can go from where he's at right now has a lot more potential then if he was already fully villainized. If you're gonna have deeper characters in the future of the MCU, you cant just have them be broken and typical bad guy by the 6th episode of the series they're introduced in

Also Kevin is legit on fire on his take of this show, it really seems like he understands the nuances and things the show was trying to do

I still think the John Walker story was too muddled. He got a super raw deal. So he killed a TERRORIST with the shield. Everything that followed that was so poorly done with him just to get him to the point they wanted him to be US Agent. A lot of the stuff in this show needed some good rewriting and editing.
@chrislopez53013 жыл бұрын
His story was definitely muddled when we watched all of the avengers straight up murder people on numerous occassions all bad guys just like the flag smashers

Was kinda hoping for a plot on this one ngl. I understand if it's an issue of length, it's just the like main thing I love from this show

1:11:11 - 1:11:13 should Greg cut his hair like Leon Kennedy’s? Just him getting up like that looked kinda like his hair but it’s be dope if there was more defined edge on the side. Thoughts?

Definitely thought The Falcon and The Winter Solidier was more of a Venus, good ranking though.

I honestly think when "Captain America and The Winter Soldier" came up at the end of the finale, it should have said "Captain America and The White Wolf" since Bucky finished his book and shed the winter soldier title from him just like falcon took on captain america.
@YourMarvelFan3 жыл бұрын
I’m glad it didn’t. The name White Wolf is so overused in media (Game of Thrones, The Witcher) and Winter Soldier just sounds so much better. Let Bucky reclaim the moniker like Natasha did with the name Black Widow instead.

@@YourMarvelFan Good point. I was wondering why White Wolf sounds familiar to me.

The whole series was going great until the finale. I was surprised to see episode 6 was one of the shorter episodes in the series. If they could stick the landing this could’ve easily been a top 10 MCU movie/show to me. Hopefully Loki is the one to tie it all together

Lmao at the time stamps, all we have is a long ass start and then haiku in review. 😂

I can understand people disliking the Sharon Carter transition. I understood it, but more of a technical point of view. She's not an Avenger, even though made her seem as capable as Black Widow. She helped them anyways. Working for the government (SHIELD, CIA) got her nowhere. And she remembers her Aunt Peggy saying this to her, "Compromise where you can. Where you can't, don't. Even if everyone is telling you that something wrong is something right. Even if the whole world is telling you to move, it is your duty to plant yourself like a tree, look them in the eye, and say, 'No, you move'." TO me that's defiance and rebellious. Now people automatically say she is a villain, which okay. But so is Howard Stark then. Whether she is a Skrull or not, I think they made Sharon way more interesting.

I think the lesson Disney should learn, from Mandalorian through Falcon and Winter Soldier, is however many episodes they think they need, just add one more.
@lexis44903 жыл бұрын
I don’t think that’s what they need to learn at all. I think they need to figure out how much are they really willing to spend. Because your just add one more episode can be 30 million dollars.
@JigInsane3 жыл бұрын
I dont think John Walker will become a goody two shoes. I truly believe he was selected because he can go to extremes that others won't. I see him becoming more a super-charged Punisher.

Holy fuck when did they add beats to the jingles. Haiku in review was awesome.

They should do the re-listing series and frame it as a multiversal reset in vein of Infinite Crisis or Flashpoint. 😂
