Regarding Eric's question: Yes, there absolutely would have been black Romans, even black legionnaires. At its peak the Roman Empire pretty much encapsulated all the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, so that includes most of North Africa, not to mention the Egyptian heartland and most of the Middle East. While immigration into the Roman territories in Africa from further South was rare, it wasn't impossible, and Roman society didn't really have any kind of officially mandated racial policy that would preclude black people from citizenship or service in the military. It was still very rare though, so statistically it's not very likely that, in a group of like 7 Roman survivors, two of them would be black, but it's definitely not impossible either. Though having said that, I wouldn't want to make it sound like everything about the Romans in this episode is 100% truthful. The most obvious fuck up is that the survivors are all supposed to be Centurions, even though the oldest one among them is only 18. A centurion was a very senior ranking officer in the legion, and it would be EXTREMELY rare to be promoted to it before the age of at least 30 (which was, I believe, the official minimum age requirement, though occasional exceptions were not impossible). One 18 year old centurion would be very unusual, but 7 of them at once makes no sense at all, these guys would basically be the command staff of the entire Ninth legion. No idea why they decided to make them all Centurions, except maybe that they wanted to use the cool helmet with the plumes on top. Also, while the moment where the Romans just casually accept Bill's sexuality and imply that most ordinary Romans are bisexual is sweet, it's also not really true. While it's true that Roman society generally didn't judge people on their sexuality, that's only because they didn't even really have a concept of "sexual orientation", and simply judged people by their actual role in a sexual encounter. In ancient Rome, it wasn't really a question of gay or straight but a question of penetrator or penetrated, and it was expected that proper Roman men would be sexually dominant, ie, penetrators. They didn't didn't really care who you went to bed with, they just cared that you weren't the "submissive" one when you did it, because that was considered weak and improper. That uh... Was probably more of a summary than was necessary honestly but oh well lol, gotta use that miscellaneous knowledge somehow lmao

BUT the reason for having a black Roman soldier was NOT out of reverence for history. It was out of the need to be SJW TV activists. To shoehorn in POC whenever possible even if it doesnt fit. This is waterboarding of the public to accept the view of the progressive sjw. We all know its bad to not hire POC, but hire them for parts that they fit. If its right to place the wrong race anywhere, then I suggest we change Madea to Kevin James in a dress add a cpl Asians, some Mexicans and if the normally all black cast complains, call them filthy racists 🤣

It might have been Moffat’s usual self deprecating thing, but he said he was surprised she returned his call. She’s a very respected, award winning playwright now and needs the headache of writing a ‘Doctor Who’ episode like she needs a hole in the head, but to his surprise she was game. She said writing on the old show was a fun gig, especially for that point in her career, but weird because the BBC did not give two shits about the show by the time she did her thing so they were sort of left to their own devices, especially once the decision had been taken to end the show - sort of, insofar as they did actually make the decision.

I think the question of what history is too raw to touch is an interesting one, and might be worth re-visiting in 6 to 7 weeks time. As a bit of a marker, Classic Who didn't set a story during WWII until it's final season, which was 1989, 50 years after the war first began. Even that story was set in Great Britain and did not feature any Nazis. In terms of recent British history, I think if they did anything on the death of Diana, Princess of Wales the media's howls would be deafening. That was 1995, so 25 years ago. Also,, anything relating to the history of Britain in Ireland. It's still relevant, so would still be too much to tackle.

The Doctor already went back to see the Kenedy assassination. It was the 9th Doctor and we see it in "Rose" when Rose is talking to the conspiracy theorist who has pictures of the Doctor from different times. He is seen standing in the crowd. It probably took place sometime after "Rose" so it is likely that Rose was with him at the time and we just didn't see that story. But on the point of 9/11 I think it is a bit different. Like what story could you tell that involved the Doctor in those events? Like we know what happened. Are they gonna try and say it was Aliens that caused it because that would be a bad idea, or are they just going to have the Doctor in the buildings trying to escape? He would just have to do what he done in Fires of Pompeii then and let everyone die. But I dunno why the Doctor would be there. Like if the TARDIS landed in one of the world trade center buildings then surely he would just leave the second he realised where he was because if you are there it is most likely you will be killed. Who would wait in a skyscraper when they know a plane is about to fly into the side of it? Pompeii was different because at least you could see the Volcano erupt and have some time to escape to the TARDIS. Maybe the Doctor has watched the incident from a far out of curiosity, I dunno. I feel like they could get away with Pearl Harbor more easily as you could just have the Doctor deal with some alien threat or what ever but the setting could be a the time of the Pearl Harbor attack. But also think about the fact Doctor Who is a British series. I am from England and I understand most of what happened involving 9/11 but I know less about Pearl Harbor. I know the Japanese bombed it, it killed a lot of people, it was what convinced America to join the war and it is in Hawaii, that is like the extent of what I know. 9/11 is more culturally impactful here than Pearl Harbor as Pearl Harbor to us was just another of many tragedies in a War we were already involved with, London was going through the Blitz at the time so we had other things to worry about plus Japan was way to far for us to really get involved. After 9/11 the UK joined the US to go after Al Quida.
@hannahmerlino24624 жыл бұрын
TheZebbga RE: Kennedy Assassination It is to be believed that the photos that Clive (the conspiracy theorist) showed to Rose, happened due to to the several second gap between the Doctor asking Rose to go with him. If you remember, the first time he asks her to travel with him, Rose says no, and the Doctor leaves. He then returns a few seconds later to say, “and did I mention, it also travels in time.” Where she actually joins him. It’s believed that during those two, that’s when he went on all of the adventures alone and he realized that it’s much more enjoyable to have someone with him. So he goes back. This is backed up by the scene where the Doctor is in Rose’s flat and he looks in the mirror like he’s never seen himself before. Because he was newly regenerated.
@TheZebbga4 жыл бұрын
@@hannahmerlino2462 I don't think that was what the writters intended but I quite like that idea. Even series 11 (which had one or two high points and a boatload of lows) which had uniformly BAD ratings, was in the top 5 watched shows on it's broadcast day - there simply aren't as many people watching TV as there used to be, certainly not in the traditional sense. Doctor Who remains the BBC highest international import - like it or not, it's here to stay (for at least another 3 years if the industry chatter is to be believed). I have very little faith in numbers - they can be manipulated and presented in ways to suit pretty much any purpose, and often are by tabloids looking for stories. I have much more faith in the actual end product - Series 11 was not good (despite one or two reasonable high points), but Series 12 seems to be a huge step in the right direction. Now...If they could just give Jodie an honest to goodness "I am The Doctor" moment...

Definitely my least favorite episode of Doctor who. Although Tsundra and Girl who died come close.

Ward Junior I blame the placement, it would have been better if we didn’t just have the big cliffhanger of Missy showing concern for the Doctor.

No one noticed an ultra rare black Roman soldier? 4 guys who notice everything ? Diversity bs! Would you notice if a White Zulu warrior showed up in the middle of the Mini Series Shaka Zulu? Or a Mexican soldier in Mulan ?

The Roman Empire controlled much of northern Africa. There absolutely would have been black Roman soldiers. Maybe not a lot, but definitely some.

@@TheMoonRover Indeed, some black Romans are named in the historical record, and Roman soldiers from North Africa are attested to as far north as Scotland/Hadrian's Wall: www.historyextra.com/period/roman/how-ethnically-diverse-was-roman-britain

@@markmorris7123 As if everyone stayed in their own countries back then. Of course there were black people in Roman occupied territories. I don't spread false narratives, but I'm heartily sick to death of those who do, just to suit their own prejudices.
