It's worth looking up the rest of the Doctor's instructions for Martha. The bit that Martha fast-forwarded through includes The Doctor telling her that he hates pears and she should never let him eat one, uttering the phrase "bingle bongle dingle dangle, yickety-do, yickety-dah, ping pong, lippy-tappy-too-tah," and breaking character and then rambling as Tennant about one of his favourite bands.

Oh yeas!!! Also for anyone who still hasn't seen it, just type in 'Doctor Who Strange Noises with My Mouth - deleted scene' and you'll get 91 seconds well spend with The Doctor/David Tennant.

When telling Joan about his life (John's life, not the Doctor) he talks about his parent's Verity his mother and Sidney, his father. Sydney Newman was the BBC Head of Drama who commissioned Doctor Who back in 1963, and Verity Lambert was the woman he chose to be the first Producer/Showrunner, they are essentially The Doctor's parents

This episode as well as the next are based on a 7th Doctor novel called “human nature”. The episodes are actually written by the original novel author, Paul Cornell, who rewrote it for the 10th Doctor and Martha. He also wrote the series 1 episode “Father’s Day”. Speaking of the 7th Doctor his face and several other of the classic Doctor’s are drawn in mr smith’s diary. This is the first time in the new series they’ve shown the classic who incarnations of the Doctor. Likewise the 8th Doctor from the American tv movie is among the faces which marks the first time he’s been pictured in a tv episode of Doctor who. You can find a slowed down version of the Doctor’s instruction video online. He goes over a couple of more rules before talking about needing to keep talking about nothing for a bit longer for the rest of the fast forward part and then immediately jumps into the last instructions we get to see in the actual episode.

I had - still have, in fact - all these seasons in the BBC DVD box sets. This episode, and the two after it, are all on one disc, and I believe it's the greatest DVD I own - Doctor Who firing on all cylinders, infinitely rewatchable, wonderful storytelling, out of this world acting. Just brilliant stuff.

The Family are a set of Doctor Who villains that really stood out in my memory. Also, the Doctor being human, and poor Martha having to direct everything behind the scenes because he's out of order...ugh, this was such a good episode! Can't wait for the second half. I genuinely don't remember what the deal with the little boy turns out to be: I somehow didn't even remember him being in this story, which is odd, since that actor went on to be in other things that I've enjoyed.

Few can imagine my unbounded glee when I learned a guest character was named "Redfern" in this story. That is actually my family name. And the credits revealed it's even spelled the same way! (Some Britons spell it "Redfearn".) I freely admit it's a ego trip, a "Redfern" in "Doctor Who"! Unrelated, this two-parter was adapted from a novel published during the "wilderness years". That version featured the 7th Doctor and "Ace" as they were the latest characters at the time, 1995.

There is so much to love about it - and the stakes are so high, because we can't see how it's going to be resolved! The Time Agents were only mentioned once in classic Who and even then it's very vague. It was a 4th Doctor story called "The Talons of Weng Chi-ang" which was the finale to Season 14. The villain basically feared the Doctor was a time agent, seemingly a bit of fugitive from them. The villain also comes from the 51st century just like Jack. As you might guess from the title it's erm... Not aged so well in certain regards, but that aside as story it's typically well regarded by fans.

This is a great 2-parter. With the Doctor-assistant romances, it was originally a big no, like a teacher-student (he's 1000, they're normally in their 20s). The US movie tried to force it, which is (part of) why it flopped. There was a lot of controversy when Ecclestone-Rose kissed, but a lot of people allowed it due to the plot line. Old-Who was mainly derisory or patronising about humans, so it was never really an issue So it's a very polarising opinion, which they occasionally play on!

I would defiantly say Martha's relationship with the doctor is a unrequited love story, she loves him as someone would love a celebrity crush but he see's her as just a good friend, because the doctor is still in-love with rose so he can't focus on loving someone else in that same way. I think Martha thinks she can sift the love he has for rose to herself, but considering the way the doctor behaves around her it doesn't look like it is going to go her way. This part one and part two are two of the most popular episodes of new who.

Romance for the Doctor is a bit controversial among some fans myself included. I dont "hate" it to any silly degree - its a show, whatever and all that, but as a classic who fan which had only 2 instances of "there is definitely some flirting going on here" with companions over 26 seasons, I do find New Who leans too much on it. You put your finger on the heart of the matter immediately: Its ultimately pointless beyond the immediate moment due to the nature of the show itself. Also I just prefer a more "alien" Doctor over the "romantic hero" approach in general.
