K9 not strictly an alien and he had nowhere to take Leela. He couldn't take Leela back to sevateem after all she's see and it would probably be very difficult to get back there and I think after Leela settled down on Gallifrey they changed the no aliens law, so Nyssa could stay

The reason Mary Tamm left is because her character went from calm and collected to the archetypal 'scream' type. It really did do a diservice to her character. Lala Ward seemed too eager to copy the Doctor. Leela I enjoyed because her character ... evolved. She went from believing the Doctor was Xoanon an evil God and had magic, to at least understanding how to interact with the Tardis. (thats not to mention that some of her stories were the best Doctor Who has ever produced). She interprested the world through less primitive eyes. If you have noticed Doctor who has generally had companions from either the future or the present day. THose that understand technology we cannot to those that understand what we have now (and I think personally its a bit of a waste on the show to keep doing this). Its rare they introduce a companion from a more earlier part of history or from a Society that had devolved.. this makes Leela great!
