I was prescribed 40 mg/day of Atorvastatin to treat an elevated cholesterol level. I was asymptomatic at the time and the blood test showed only the elevated cholesterol and a vitamin D deficiency as things out of the ordinary. After about 3 months I started having severe and painful cramps in the calves of both legs with odorous urine that foamed significantly. A subsequent blood test revealed that I was in stage 2 renal failure, to my utter shock. There was no change to my diet or lifestyle during this period, so I could attribute this change in my kidney function to no other cause than the medication I was taking. I immediately stopped the drug and adopted a low saturated fat diet with adequate fiber intake and limited protein and salt. The symptoms did lessen and I am feeling better, but I never went back to the doctor, at the VA clinic, and decided to not pump myself full of drugs and play Russian Roulette with my health. I'm also getting more cardiovascular exercise, which is also helping things out.

I know a couple of people who have been given statins and had serious side effects. My sister was one, she ended up walking with a stick because her legs kept giving way. mrbigshotfancypants has a very good point: Statistics show that people with heart problems and/or family histories of same benefit tremendously, even with some unpleasant side effects. However, I stopped taking statins and am so glad I did. People not in that situation are shown to benefit very slightly, but still have to deal with those unpleasant side effects. As to the “very slightly“ claim on my part, statistics that counter what I just said cite relative percentage results, not absolute percentage. Research the difference between the two.

This is simply an educational style video outlining why and how you take this medicine, plus side effects to be aware of. Doctor, what’s the best way to confirm familial hypercholesterolemia? Should a genetic test be done? For those of us who have a healthy lifestyle but consistently high cholesterol levels nevertheless
@gerardine9675 Жыл бұрын
High LDL doesn't need to be lowered. Statin is needed only when HDL is lower than transglycerides. Also doctors massively overprescribe, that's why they cause so much misery to their patients unnecessarily. If they think statins will benefit their patients, they should prescribe one tablet per week, or two at most. The cause of cardiovascular heart disease is not saturated fat or LDL but alcohol, sugar and transfats. Patients should be told to stop eating processed carbs and everything with sugar and artificial sweeteners. A natural human diet is what people need, not meds where the painful and even dangerous side effects don't justify the supposed benefits.

I'd been in them 4 to 5 years. She said I could come off them for 3 months as an experiment. Sure enough the brain fog lifted within a few days! I turned that 3 months into at least 5 years. As I have always had an MOT annually, they kept an eye on my cholesterol etc. Good doctors surgery. Had a call from their specialist dietitian last November, who found out I had familial hypercholesterolemia, meaning risk is higher for fatalities. I've got to work harder with diet and exercise.

#DoctorO'Donovan - There are several videos here on KZbin created by doctors which talk about the relative result versus the absolute result of taking statins and that the latter shows that the benefit is not that great and suggests that the side effects are not worth the small absolute risk of taking them. What is your view on this please?

It is very important to know how many Mg of Statin are you taking per days. Doctor give me 40mg / days after my heart operation with 2 stain. My side effect is muscle pain and lost of weight mostly Muscle. after one years .i stopped the dedication . my serious muscle pain goes away immediately. I am now taking just 10Mg of simvastatin per days. So far no muscle pain or weight lost.

Hi, my mom's doctor double the dosage of atorvastatin (from 20 to 40mg) now she's having headaches, is it normal? What medicine can she take for the headache to go away without having problem in taking it? Thank you very much.
@charlieleonardo Жыл бұрын
Yes, I’m prescribed 40mg atorvastatin daily & I’m experiencing headaches frequently. Towards this, I’m actively carrying out lifestyle changes that will improve my cholesterol & blood lipid profile & accordingly I’ll stop taking this medication under the guidance of my doctor!

I was on simvastatin for two years. No issues. Then my new doctor switched over to atorvastatin. I’ve noticed a decline in short term memory. It’s really bad some days. I can’t remember what I did a few minutes ago. However, my long term memory is exceptionally strong.

Well I've been on 80mg in the evenings since 2nd of August after OHS and been having shoulder neck and collar bone aches since really thought it was because of the OHS but still getting these aches and have had quite some pain in my left shoulder for about 7 weeks now following just 1 session at the local hospital physio dept cardiac rehabilitation course and its still bugging me I had just thought these aches were just an after effect from such a big operation but because my shoulder is still not ok wondering if its the statin

Could well be. I've been on Avortistatin for just 2 months, 40ml cos I have familial hypercholesterolemia (Google it). Now down from 7.3 to 5.3 in 2 months. I've experienced intense aching in both shoulders and both arms at the same time, sometimes one shoulder. Mine comes suddenly and takes me by surprise. Makes my arms feel heavy.
