Wow someone that tells it how it is. I have my nose opperation over five years ago and said to my surgeon only weeks after that I could still nor breath through my right nostril, only for him to look up it and say well its open. Still suffer today, but listening to this I very much believe it allergy related.

I've had two septoplasty surgeries one when I was younger at like 14 and then just recently as of August 17th and I'm 37 now. My nose was really crooked this last time due to an which I think I know what it was from when I was younger I have my other surgery but I can't confirm just because I never went in to get checked to see if my nose was actually broken or fractured. The doctor told me I definitely fractured my nose at some point and I would have been the only time is when I fell on it and it was bloody. My nose is definitely straighter and then they took out the tubes and I'm healing pretty nicely. I know it's still a little bit early but most of my nose has healed pretty well. But I'm still having issues with my nose breathing. The problem is that in the upper part of my right side of my nose still kind of pinched off. When I breathe in on the right side it kind of presses or collapses together even more reducing even more the amount of air coming in. Same for breathing out of my right side of my nose it's not as bad as breathing in but I still noticed it I have a little hard time breathing out. But if I take my finger and put it next to the right side of my nose and pull my skin by my cheek away from my nose I breathe so much better. Hence why I know that using the Breathe Right Strips would cause me to breathe better just because it's pulling my nose away from the inner part of my nose and opening up the Airways to breathe better. I mean I might have a little bit better relief then before the surgery and this past week my doctor even said oh yeah definitely it's open more than what it was before. I'm also grateful that my nose is now much straighter before but I'm just disappointed in the outcome to be able to breathe better didn't really do anything. I don't know if there's any hope for my nose or if there's someone else to come to seek out for any options. Like I said this is the second time I've had this done I don't know how much more they can do with my nose.

Hi Dr Park, I’m 4-weeks post-op (septoplasty, turbinate reduction) and I need to take a 2hr flight soon. My surgeon says stay off for 6-weeks with the risks being nose bleed or cerebral fluid leak but hasn’t given exact details and appears to hold strong to not doing anything for 6-weeks, including smoking or drinking. My recovery has been great and I feel fine. Aside from that I’ve never suffered from nose bleeds and didn’t during recovery. Have you ever had a patient fly on or before 4-weeks post op? Please let me know. Thank you!

I've had patients fly even a few days after surgery with no problem after septal and turbinate surgery. Since I don't use nasal packing, all they need is one quick cleaning 2-3 days post-op and they're good to go. Officially, however, you should follow you doctor's advice.

Unfortunately, nasal surgery generally doesn't help with sleep apnea. However, it does allow all the other snoring and sleep apnea treatment options (such as CPAP or mandibular advancement devices) to work better. Talk to your ENT about your next possible options. Good luck!

Question: Years ago- roughly like 5-7 years? I forget exactly but I had a septoplasty operation, during the operation they discovered a newly formed bone spur that grew after the x-rays, apparently it was the biggest naturally forming bone spur and it had to be chizzled out before the septoplasty was completed- the surgeons said the operation got my nose straightened about 98%, recovery was terrible long and eventually I came back for turbinant rebirth (cauterization) to help heal/restore my congested nose, my nose although alot better it still tends to operate one nostril at a time and congestion is still an occasional issue. I have had used many sprays, water pumps and such to help but nothing seems to fix this issue, what else can be done?

@doctorstevenpark
@doctorstevenpark 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear. It's odd that water will give you temporary relief since water will tend to swell your nasal turbinates. Whereas saline (salt water) will shrink your nasal turbinates, giving you better breathing. It's hard to say exactly what the problem is without looking inside your nose. Did you go back to your surgeon for a follow-up visit? Your surgeon is the best person to see what's going on. The reason for your persistently clogged nose is likely one of the things I mentioned in this video.
@michellemooresings

@@doctorstevenpark that's so interesting. I have found the same temporary relief. I use 2 prescription nasal sprays, flutocasone and azelastine (sp.?). I also bought an over the counter saline spray I use. I had Septoplasty for a deviated septum and bone spur about 20 years ago. I thought it may have helped a little for a while. Nothing ever worked as well as afrin, but I had to stop taking it. They accidentally nicked an artery when doing the procedure and the whole experience ended up being a bit traumatic. My ENT says I have a deviated septum and bone spur again! Do they grow back or what? He's done some deep nose sprays on me while in his office. Two times this seemed to help. The 3rd time it didn't seem to make much difference. Then Covid hit. I HAVE to do something now. I can't sleep if I can't breathe through my nose and I get stressed now at bedtime over it. In the middle of the night, I've gone to the bathroom on occasion and put have patted the inside of my nose with water. It's helped for a few minutes. I take pepcid for GERD. But it's like when I lay down my nose just stops up. Lastly, I have thin skin that does seem to collapse when I breathe in deeply. I also have thin skin at the bridge. I don't want to go through what I went through again! It was not pleasant. I feel like I had a nice nose that they made look like I'd had a bad nose job. Grrr. The middle of my nose isn't in the middle anymore. It goes to the right. I'm wondering if i have scar tissue as well. :( I'm definitely going to buy your book. Thanks.

@@michellemooresings Thanks for sharing. Your story goes to show how important nasal breathing is for optimal sleep. And that a septoplasty operation alone won't fix your stuffy nose problem long-term. Did you try one of the nasal dilator devices such as Breathe Right strips or any of the internal dilators? Once you're breathing better through your nose, consider adding mouth taping. Good luck!

Maybe there's underlying issue such as inflamed andednois or sinusitis, rhinitis....maybe should have these things properly examined and esp contact your ENT. The results won't happen immediately can take time esp depending how many yrs you lived with the issue. Also wanna take look at your diet, environment and lifestyle which all play a major role too. I'm not a medical expert just speaking from personal experience but you definitely should speak with your doctor and have your sinuses examined. Acupuncture treatment can be of great benefit too.

I had a septoplasty with turbinate reduction on 1/4/23 and my breathing is actually worse. In my left nostril on the inside wall where my septum is there's a huge bump that's getting bigger. It's white looking almost like what you called a spur. Will this go back down? It's blocking most of the air through my left nostril. I was hoping it's just swollen because of the incision. I realize I just got the surgery, so I'm hoping I will recover and be able to breath better. Just an update on this: the recovery was very painful, but I'm glad I got the surgery. I had septoplasty on my right side 24 days ago . The ENT surgeon removed my tamponade after 30 hours, because I didn't want it anymore, then i started to breathe free and very clearly :) , yes first week i had little bit blood and nasal collection - that's okay, but the biggest problem is before 4-5 days ago ... my right side started to block again, i.e 20 days after surgery... D-r Steven Park, do you know more about this :( , what's the reason, my right side to be blocked again, 20 days after surgery, but in the beginning was really free ? 😢

I’m on day 13 since I broke my nose and letting it heal at home. The only thing making me feel stuffy in my left nostril is because I can feel mucus up there still and I’m not sick and never had allergies in my life. Is this mucus a result of my broken nose or a results of a deviated septum? I’m really hoping the mucus goes away when my nose is healed and I don’t have to get surgery. My nose feels healed completely is why I’m worried about this mucus stuffy feeling still??

Hey when I was really young I broke my nose septum too and had a surgery idk if it went well but i had a sinus endoscopic surgery 13days ago and I'm facing the same problem rn there's alot of mucus in my nose and up my throat it feels disgusting but i do a saline cleanse twice a day i should be doing thrice ig but yes and yet helps to let out the mucus and I'm really hoping I get rid of the mucus, so basically the mucus must be stuck in your nose prior to your accident? And it's coming out now? Cause in my case it's all the coagulated mucus which is coming now. I hope you recover well🌷

breast feeding is very important. research has shown baby fed on bottle teets underdevelop their mouth opening causing resulting knock on effects to the whole mouth pallat structure ongoing to the nasal passageway.. basically as the child tries repeatedly to suck on the breast this causes great excersize and expansion through early development years of the whole breathing process.

Hi Dr. Park, I recently had a septoplasty and turbinoplasty 5 days ago and I am concerned about the stuffiness in one of my nostrils. I am able to breath clearly out of my right nostril which was fine prior to the surgery, but my left nostril (which my septum was pushed towards making it difficult to breath) still feels plugged during the recovery process. Is this just inflammation/swelling as a result of the surgery? When inhaling and exhaling through my nose, it makes a strange “bubbling” noise in the plugged nostril. I was instructed to manually take the packing out of my nose the very next morning after my surgery and most of the bleeding has subsided so I don’t really know what else could be going on here. I would really appreciate your insight.

Slim, Please be patient. You can have accumulation of blood and mucous after septoplasty for up to 1-2 weeks, even without packing. Use lots of nasal saline irrigation to loosen the secretions. Talk to your surgeon if you're still congested. Did you have your post-op visit yet?

@@doctorstevenpark I understand, thank you very much. I have my post-op follow up in about 6 weeks so it is quite a while until any further assessments. I have also noticed quite a bit of yellow mucus coming out from the back of my throat from what seems like nasal drip. I am hoping that I have not developed an infection over night because it is quite yellow, even though I have been taking Rhinaris (Nasal Spray) as instructed and is the only post op care I am doing other than cleaning the inside of my nostrils with q-tips and hydrogen peroxide.

Do you think it fails due to people only having septoplasty and not turbinate reduction? Also, do you think endoscopic septoplasty offers better results than conventional septoplasty? I had the surgery 4 days ago, I can still only breathe through the same workifn nostril
@doctorstevenpark
@doctorstevenpark 2 жыл бұрын
In most cases, both septoplasty and turbinoplasty is done together. As far as I know, there's no study showing that endoscopic septoplasty leads to better results. It's purely surgeon's preference. I performed septoplasty with the naked eye mainly because it takes 1/2 the time to finish, and I can see the field in 3D (endoscopic is 2D). If it's only been 4 days, it's much too early to worry at this point. The points I make in this video apply a few weeks to months after surgery. Follow-up with your surgeon for your next visit and relay any concerns you may have, if any. Good luck!

Can you also talk about the connection between taking blood dilators ( l Arganine, Viagra etc) and then getting a stuffy nose shortly after?
@doctorstevenpark
@doctorstevenpark 2 жыл бұрын
Many different medications can cause nasal congestion, including high blood pressure meds, erectile dysfunction (ED) meds, NSAIDS, sedatives, and antidepressants. The most common types are alpha and beta blockers used for high blood pressure. Viagra is an alpha-blocker. Think about this situation: Silent undiagnosed sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure and ED, and taking meds for both conditions can aggravate nasal congestion, which can make sleep apnea worse. Plus various prescription medications can also cause weight gain.

Prior to 500 years ago, there were no crooked teeth. Its boils down to chewing 4 plus hours a day. This back and forth chewing expanded the mouth and thus affected the frontal skull and jaw. Dried meat, roots seeds and nuts were the only diet, and some fruit. So the end result was a wider face, stronger jaw and larger mouth volume which in turn resolves the spetum and expands the airways. That is the clinical historical view point in 2024. Now you know. The antithesis of this is soft mushy food in density. Aka what we eat today. Think outmeal and avacados. Soft steak. Ect.

I was 17 years old and had a constant nasal blockage issue and my doctor recommended me a useless septoplasty. after the surgey my blockage got worse and I realized my septum was never the problem it was the hypertrophy of turbinates. But unfortunately I live in a third world country and in my country doctors only know how to do cautery of turbinates which is the most useless technique to fix the turbinates. I just dont know what to do. my life has become miserable. I have constant blockage, huge turbinates blocking my airway.

wow man. reading this almost brought me to tears. its 2:56am for me and i cant sleep as im recovering from a septoplasty from this morning. now though my doctor says my deviated septum was 80/20, i have a feeling your issue is mine as well. i constantly find myself pulling my cheek just to breathe in or to clear out one side of my nose and it doesnt ever feel like my bone is the issue. i sometimes feel debris in my nose even if i clean it out completely, so im wondering if i have enlarged turbinates. im scared to see how my nose will feel after recovery, especially since it effects my sleep so heavily. if i went through all the complications and discomfort of this surgery, all the while having a completely separate issue, will be unexplainably frustrating. it saddens me to see you dont have an opportunity to fix that problem for yourself as i know just how inconvenient and frustrating it can be to deal with permanently/indefinitely. i hope you can find a way to fix it.

Septoplasty in my opinion is the most useless procedure for 90 percent of the people. very rarely someone has a big deviation and can be seen in city scan then only it makes sense to do septoplasty. Most of the time the nasal blockage issue is because of only turbinate hypertrophy and unfortunately 99% of the doctors use some of the most outdated and useless methods to fix it such as cautery, radiofrequency and other thermal damage techniques. An in office submucosal resection with microdibrider can give a new life to patient. But most doctors take patients to operating room and do unnecessary septoplasties and aggressive turbinate reduction
