Mentioned in today's episode:
Recovering Agency: Lifting the Veil of Mormon Mind Control : amzn.to/3KpahSQ
The Program: Cons, Cults, and Kidnapping: www.netflix.com/us/title/8157...
In this episode of Faith Unraveled, we discuss the difficult dynamic within high demand religion of replacing your own identity with the church's. For this episode we refer to a chapter from Luna Lindsay Corbden's transformative book 'Recovering Agency.' In this discussion, we explore how religious indoctrination, particularly within the LDS church, affects personal identity and decision-making and how the church's influence and demand for conformity can impact it members, particularly those who don't naturally identify with the church's ideals.

I think a big part of it is that I never even had the opportunity to ask myself what I wanted. Now trying to figure that out at nearly 50 😭

yeah women have been so undermined by these doctrines and there's so many like you. For me I tried to tie my likes and dislikes often to conform around my faith and be inline with which caused a lot of internal cognitive dissonance. So, I'm 39 just now feeling like I can try to embrace who I am without it constantly being under this approval of a church lens or doctrinal filter. But for women I think it's been way more intense than for myself - even though I have been just so incredibly confused at this point in my life after starting to deconstruct as of last year.

I started watching your podcast because I left the church in 2011 (age 54) and I needed to understand why I am still so angry that I was raised Mormon. I was raised in Idaho with many relatives that were pioneers. It never occurred to me that the church was not true until I started researching. Where were my critical thinking skills? How could I not understand and leave earlier. I didn’t want kids and wasn’t sure I wanted to marry, but I did all the things like a robot. I love my kids and grandkids but didn’t feel like I had a choice. Thank you so much for this podcast!!! At 67 I can figure out and deconstruct now! Thank you again!

This discussion touches on a profoundly important topic that is very raw to me. Increasingly we are seeing GAs telling members to subordinate their conscience to the institution. It’s just so dangerous. People need to read up on the Stanley Milgram experiment and stand by their conscience.

I wish we lived closer so we could go out and be “wild” together. 😅 My husband also never felt like he “fit” in the church and that was always a struggle for us. I wanted him to try harder and was always applying pressure for him to be a better priesthood holder. He always wanted to do all these crazy things like have sex in public places, in the car, etc. and I shut that down real quick. Now that we’re out he definitely feels more free to just be himself and I feel free to love him as he is instead of always trying to make him conform. Our marriage has improved a hundred fold. ❤ I would also like to add that he is not a podcast listener but he always lets me know when another episode of yours drops. ❤

This should be called deconstructing from religion/cults, not faith.

Thank you for the encouragement, it’s been about 18 months since I started deconstructing and I’m really hitting the emotional difficulty now..and in a place where there’s not many momos around here in eastern Canada (blessing and a curse maybe) ..these online resources like your podcast are so helpful to hear we’re not alone.
