This is ridiculous. Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery NEVER stated a rock in a hat was used to translate the plates. Read JSH in The Pearl of Great Price and Oliver Cowdery's testimony in the footnote which corroborates that the Urim and Thummim was used. Both were accused when they were alive of using a rock, and if they had they would have said so. In 1834 an anti-book, "Mormonism Unvailed." [sic or actual spelling] was published accusing Joseph Smith of using a rock and "talking through his hat." That's a satirical phrase to describe someone doesn't know what they are talking about or are talking nonsense. Because of that book, Joseph Smith asked Oliver Cowdery to write a history of the Restoration - which he did in Eight Letters - a series of letters he sent to W.W. Phelps who published them in the Church paper, Messenger and Advocate. His first letter is the footnote. Oliver Cowdery was also allowed to translate as noted in Doctrine and Covenants 8 & 9 - which states the translation process was a revelatory process and has always been used on how to receive personal revelation - the burning in the bosom or a stupor of thought - to help determine truth. To learn more, read "Oliver Cowdery's Letters" which can be found online. The groups today promoting the rock in the hat nonensense, are "Book of Mormon Central or ScripturePlus," "Interpreter Foundation." and "FAIR." These are creepy organizations with weird scholars who can't tell truths from lies from historical documents about Joseph Smith.

Elder Holland was correct. The "Gospel Topics" essay is misleading, written by church bureaucrats based on very unreliable sources. Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery, the two primary eyewitnesses to the Book of Mormon translation, consistently testified that the translation came from the plates using the two Jaredite/Nephite interpreters (sometimes referred to as the Urim & Thummim) which came with the plates for that purpose (JS-H 1:35). For a full up-to-date discussion see the new book "By Means of the Urim & Thummim: Restoring Translation to the Restoration."

For me, it all came down at once. For the most part. I feel like I have always been a somewhat nuanced Mormon so I was always trying to do everything I could. I was taking my kids to early morning seminary everyday. I never missed Church on Sundays. All that jazz. I never had a Mormon family. My Mom would take us to church. My stepdad never went and forbid missionaries to even be at our house. So I always felt really different at church. I had a similar situation as you two in high school doing things. I shouldn't have felt insanely guilty about it, really tried my best to get back on the path. Last year My 18-year-old son, told a friend in a car on their way to the temple that he was gay. I was then asked to not bring him to church anymore and to leave him at home which I told them was absolutely ludicrous and didn't even make sense to me. So I went home and started looking at the church's stance on gay people. This is after last falls general Conference. That was when the prophet made a statement that was very contradictory to what he had said in the spring conference. He said something to be effective. We needed to not listen to or take advice from non-members. I started with the gospel topic essays and then found letter to my wife. I remember sitting in bed and having that epiphany of oh my gosh. It's a huge fraud. I was the activity day leader. I instantly stopped going to church and only went on week nights to activity days. Asked to be released with the end of the school year. It has been 8 months.

I think the focus should be to dress however you want to dress but also try to be respectful to whoevers in front of you. I remember this concert of Twice(i think) in Malaysia and they were dressed modestly to respect cuture. But they were also stylish despite not wearing their usually skin showing attired for certain songs. You're right. I think it's our own biases, reinforced stereotypes, and where our eyes fixate makes it wrong.

While I probably don’t have to point out that apologists for the church would also point out that this story has two levels of hearsay about what one of the apostles said… I also served a mission in the late 90s and had similar conversations with Christian pastors who tried to own us with our naïveté of the church’s history. I never encountered this specific bit of information, but I remember rejecting everything that I heard as “anti-Mormon lies.” Only to find out several years after the GTEs came out (I was slow to read them) that those “lies” were actually true, by the church’s admission. I was even told by my mission president - a religion professor at BYU specializing in church history - that those things were lies. Apparently he was lied to as well. (At least, that’s what I want to believe. I like my mission president.)

this mentality is actually harmful to men too though. It teaches 2 things to men struggling with the counsel to not lust. 1st is that some of the blame goes to women like you mentioned, and second by stating that exposure of the body causes sexual thoughts, the body is now viewed as only sexual. this makes the teaching to not lust feel impossible. It is the reason I no longer believe in the church I've had deep self hatred for being attracted to women feeling like I'm evil and out of control.

Though intended to uphold virtue, the concept of modesty actually sexualizes girls by fixating on their bodies. This harmful focus, deeply ingrained in patriarchy, places undue responsibility on girls for maintaining “gospel” standards, often blaming them for the harmful and even violent behavior of men. And have you ever stopped to consider how early this starts in a young girls life? In some church cultures even four and five-year-old girls are taught to be modest. Think of why that is 🤯 Not to mention: purity culture teaches that a girl’s worth is linked to her adherence to strict dress codes and behaviors. In most cases this will inevitably lead to body shame, reduced self-esteem, and an unhealthy perception of personal value. Instead of protecting innocence, it burdens young girls with the responsibility of men’s thoughts and behaviors and diverts attention from their intellect, kindness, and achievements. I encourage those who are deconstructing to rethink these constructs and promote environments that value and empower young girls and women . True empowerment lies in fostering self-worth, respect, and genuine personal growth, and has ZERO to do with what we wear.

@Faith.unraveled men might not have a "modesty" issue or to the framework explained here in your post. But, we have an issue that has a certain standard to how we are supposed to look, behave, and conduct ourselves to whatever standards are in proximity, or those that are in a "universal baseline." Women have their expectations of how a man is supposed to be in those characteristics, especially for what is attractive in the current social time and place. This isn't anything new for my age group; before, during, or after. So does it matter what we wear to be seen or noticed? That to a man is kind of important. On the other note, for men who do get attention... does it mean that women who are swayed by their appearance should be so stricken that they think they can say and do certain things that might be unwarranted to what the man is even looking for? Some women are also very forward, sorry gals, it's true. I've had many girl/women friends and I've heard them tear men apart even worse than men can when they even think to have a conversation about women. AND since women are known to have more communication than men, women's conversations can go on and on about topics further than men's ever do for the most part. And again, I've heard them. They have tended to almost "de-ball" men with how they deconstruct them in every aspect, reassemble them, and come to a conclusion that if it's something they want for either the short or long term based on the man's resources, appeal in any physical aspect, and how they feel they can attempt to adapt or mold them. With that said, if he's good-looking enough, has a way of presence in appearance, and is seemingly confident, even if it might not be the type of confidence that actually matters, they stick around. Is this lust? Is he an accessory? Means to having resources? Place what your post is saying in each part of the framework to what I'm saying here. Because, and I might not be getting to everything on what in trying to say, but at least giving a glimpse into the struggles of the same thing men also have to deal with on one end of things. So does it matter what we "wear"?

I think there is a window of opportunity when someone feels like they have been duped, for them to wake up and make a change... But if left too long, 'HE COULDNT HAVE DONE THAT!' gets processed by the whole, 'God moves in mysterious ways' thought process, and becomes 'SO WHAT IF HE DID THAT?.'
@JSandLDS

But It's quite obvious when people that have gone through the 'God moves in mysterious ways' process, encounter a touchy subject that they don't like being discussed. They will say things like 'THIS HAS BEEN DISCUSSED A MILLION TIMES' or 'EVERYONE KNOWS ABOUT THIS' 'NOT THIS OLD STUFF AGAIN' 'THIS HAS BEEN DEBUNKED' etc. Any attempt to make it sound uncool and old hat (no pun intended) to be talking about this topic.

Sorry but this was 100% Brigham Young written as if Joseph Smith. Yes Joseph had a section on marriage and polygamy in D&C. Section 101 on monogamy and condemning polygamy. This was scripture until Joseph's being put out of the way. This can be found in D&C up to 1844. Funny thing that was the same year Joseph was forcefully removed by evil and conspiring friends. Then the new chief ruled in the way he wanted to. Go find the old section 101.

@@Faith.unraveled I have a ton. Just read Hyrums talk at conference 2 months before he was put out of the way. "Only the devil would teach such tings, only a fool would teach such things. Worth a good read. It was a coup because the secret society 12 who were doing wickedness including polygamy behind Joseph's back until finally eliminating him. The real issue was slavery though. Joseph gave the priesthood to black men and wanted to stop slavery. He was a threat to the south and the 12 who were behind Brigham and Heber totally for slavery. That was the basis of the war in Missouri too. Members plotting against Joseph so the anti slavery church would not settle there and change the state to anti slavery. Keep the Book of Mormon. I have to admit. Joseph smith was clever. The book of Mormon was custom designed to solve Two 19th problems. One being the justification of the Ransacking of the Native Americans culture and land.. The other that, American Christian denominations had become a bit unmoored and all over the shop since America severed ties with England. In that Context, BOM came in with a ready-made solution that tied it all up in a neat package.

Excellent delivery! Its a pattern of Joseph using Hell threats to get what he wants. He did it twice on Martin Harris. Once when he forced him to agree that he'd testify that he'd seen the plates, before he'd even seen them or he'd be condemned. And once when he'd go to hell if he didn't give up his property for the printing.. What a despicable man... It makes me cross and I 'm not even nor ever have been a Mormon.
