A new study suggests adding salt to your food increases your risk of dying. Sounds scary, right? But hold on. As we dive closer, we see the risk is minimal, and likely due to "unhealthy user bias." Plus, the study may be more evidence that adding potassium is more important than limiting sodium.

In my country they banned salt from being on restaurant tables (you have to ask for it) BUT they serve you a huge basket full of white bread while you wait for the food, ironic. High salt intake actually cured my chronic headaches a while back, since then I have had a high sodium diet, my blood preassure is perfect and everyhting else is too

My Mother just developed very low sodium - year's of salt restriction and bland diets. All cause oof some Heart Doctors who said so 😢

I've been eating a high salt ketovore diet for the last 2.5 years. I'm 53, lean, on no meds, BP 116/80, walk every day and my doctor has just said I had the best triglycerides/HDL ration she'd ever seen. The allopathic system is corrupt.

Same - and I eat a LOT of sodium to my diet, because on keto you pee it out (it isn't stored in kidneys on keto). My BP is 90/60 or 100/70.

On the contrary, if you are prioritizing your health and salting your food while not eating highly processed foods, I've seen enough studies to show it decreases your morality. These low salt, restrict meat, eat your fruits and veg types, always always seem to be forcing their assumptions and conclusions into the headline and hiding mitigating data in the small print.

The answer is simple: if your kidneys are not working properly due to hyperinsulinemia then don't add salt to your food because you are already retaining too much sodium. But if you don't have hyperinsulinemia eat as much salt as you want.

Since the huge PURE study, we can see mortality almost world-wide in terms of salt consumption. Looking at the curve in their study we have to consume well over 10g of salt per day to get any significant increase in mortality. On the other hand, going less than 3g of salt per day results in mortality increasing rapidly. As Dr Malcolm Kendrick once mentioned, when people are put on a saline drip for 24 hours they receive 18g of salt with no harm whatsoever. Also, note that a high sugar intake requires extra water retention, which will drive up blood pressure, and is (almost) always blamed on sodium. As Dr David Unwin said "Don't blame salt for what the sugar did".

Another link between smoking and "excess" salt consumption is that smokers have less sensitive taste buds and so they may add more salt than their bodies really need. Non-smokers know when they have had enough salt because it stops tasting good. Smokers tastebud feedback is obscured.

Since going keto/carnivore I have eliminated all processed foods, resulting in a dramatic decrease in my salt intake. If anything, I am probably deficient in salt even though I salt my food to taste.

Salting to taste is the way to go, your body will tell you how much salt it wants.

@Anthony Stewart I agree. I salt my food recklessly to taste and my muscle cramps have decreased significantly. Of course, I've done other things that could have contributed to that like, stopped using my statin, lowered my carbs, increased use of certain supplements and vegetables, etc. My blood work shows my sodium well within the acceptable range despite excessively salting my food. Lastly, though I do drink water, but I'm not fanatical about it. I drink enough to feel hydrated, nothing more.

Low carb 13 years. Make everything and was always more of a pepper person. I was not getting enough and have learnt to make sure I add salt.

And as always .. have they checked with people on KETOGENIC eating? No, they have compared salt or not to regular high carb junkies. Salt is vital and completely healthy to taste with keto/carnivore eating.

Just got through eating a 70/30 beef patty with lots of salt, butter and bacon grease. Ate ribs and all of the chewy bits (collagen) before that. Ate it all with a pickle and 20 ml of apple cider vinegar. I've lost 90 lbs over the last 5 months.Thanks to this channel and also Dr. Ken Berry's channel! (KenDBerryMD) :)

Any study that does not differentiate between regular refined table salt and real salt (ancient non-contaminated) is not worth listening to, table salt will kill you, real salt will not. The best way to know how much salt to use is to salt your food to taste, the human body is an incredible machine and will tell you exactly how much it needs. Do not be afraid of real salt, it is healthy and necessary for optimal human health. Carnivore (no fruit or veg) + real salt is the way to go.

I eat 5-7 grams of salt per day it is Celtic sea salt or Redman salt with a lot of minerals in the salt my blood pressure went from 160-180/90-110 down to 105-115/55-70

Thank you. Black salt is high in potassium. I refrain from using refined table salt. Either Himalayan salt or black salt or rock salt are my choices.

My jar of Celtic salt says 1/4 tsp (1.2 gm) has 420 mg of sodium. So I decided to do the math to see how much salt it takes to equal 2300 mg/day. 2300/420 = ~5.4 (1/4 tsp) / 4 = 1.3 tsp (6.5 mg) minimum. Which is hardly anything in MHO. So I measure out 2 tsp every morning and use it my coffee & food & water (DIY electrolytes). I also use No Salt (1/4 tsp = 690 mg potassium) every time I use salt in everything to help keep the balance. Getting enough Potassium does seem to be the key since you need about twice as much (4600 mg) as you do sodium. I also take a minimum of 200 mg of Magnesium glycinate and sometimes add 250 mg of Magnesium citrate at night which helps with sleep and constipation (if needed) along with adding calcium lactate to my electrolyte water. It is hard to even find the amount of potassium on veg food labels except on salad greens where 1.5 cups has only 230 mg potassium; so I don't rely on veggies as a source for that but they can be a good source of bio-available calcium as well as dairy.

A number of enzyme reaction rates are affected by distributions of cations. For example, some enzymes are inhibited by calcium alone but are advanced when calcium is combined with zinc or magnesium or other which allows displacement of calcium from inhibitory sites and structural rearrangements of the active sites. So you are right that it isn't at all simple.

I compare salt use to Inuit sled dogs and running. Dogs can run for hours on end in the winter but are limited when the weather gets warm. So I consume more salk in the heat of the summer to retain water and less in the colder seasons.

I have added sodium that comes in the keto electrolyte blend that I consume in the day before I break my 16:8 fast. Also I notice sodium is in BHB exogenous ketones. But in both these instances, the sodium seems to be with other minerals. Also these are consumed in the content of a high fibre plant low carb diet. I wonder what your thoughts are on this?

Since adopting a ketogenic lifestyle over 2 years ago, my heart palpitations (PVCs), that I had experienced every day for nearly 2 decades, stopped. It happened within 3 days and has never come back. I had no idea keto would help with my PVCs and I still don't understand the mechanism behind it. One thing I have done since I've been keto is eat more salt. I also have very low blood pressure and when I felt dizzy the first few days of keto, I ate a stock cube and felt almost instantly better so continued to make sure I ate more salt. Could it actually be salt that is keeping my PVCs at bay?

I started keto almost 4 months ago and about two weeks into it realized I needed more salt or else I'd have headaches. For one, I was no longer eating salty fatty snacks at night, so my salt intake was decreasing and it was also summer and I was sweating outside a lot, and the keto also made me pee more. I have had heart palpitations for a long time. Not going to say they have totally gone away, but the better I balance my sodium, potassium and magnesium - the less I notice them. I had to get out of the mindset that salt was bad. We need it and we need a balance with the other electrolytes. My BP and pulse have lowered to better levels since keto and making a conscious effort to balance electrolytes.

Also, until very recently, plant foods would have contained much greater concentrations of nutrients, including sodium, than today. Likewise animals and water.

I salt my food excessively to taste and drink just enough water to feel hydrated. My bloodwork shows my sodium well within normal limits. All my other labs and vitals are near perfect for a man in his thirties....I'm sixty-two. Keto & I.F. rocks!

@@gabrielgaidos7015 Half the people who have heart attacks or strokes have total cholestrol below 200. I had a situation in my life a year and a half ago where I thought I was having a heart attack. I went to the hospital and had one of those tests done where they shoot you up full of dye and put you inside a machine to see whats going on in your arteries - totally clear, no blockage or build up. I was having a panic attack. And this was b4 I began my health journey! Now I weigh almost a 100lbs less - 40lbs more to go!!

@@gabrielgaidos7015 I cant change the bad things I ate for the last 55 years but, going forward, I can give my body the nutrition, activity and sleep it needs to repair the damage I did during that time. It seems to be working: 12/20 Resting pulse: 102 Now: 67 12/20 BP 145/95 Now: 117/76 12/20 A1c: 6.9 (w/RX) Now: 5.6 (no RX) 12/20 3X nitely urination Now: Can sleep 6-8 hrs strait. 04/21 Weight: 360lb. Now: 266lbs ( 50lbs to go). 04/21 Fatty liver - extreme discomfort on my right side, had to use 4 aleeves daily to relieve the pain and function somewhat normally. Now: No pain or discomfort, seldom use any pain relief medication for anything. 04/21: had to stop to rest after walking thru the walmart parking lot on the way to pick up my RXs. Now: Can walk non stop for an hour or so without needing to stop and rest and not on any RXs! This is all after just about a year of K.I.F.E.S. (Keto, Intermittent Fasting, Exercise, Supplementation) and learning new stuff and refining the system along the way.

My 19 month old daughter has eaten unrefined salt mixed with potassium since she was 6 months old. She’s doesn’t like sweet food or fruit. Loves cauliflower fried in lamb dripping and you guessed it salt.

Salt can only increase BP by one point. If you have healthy kidneys blood sodium is a constant, as the digestive system only uptakes what it can use, and excretes the excess. This can happen very quickly, so any increases in BP are temporary.

I use 2 teaspoons a day of Lo salt to season 60% potassium /40%Sodium = 10g...which amounts to 6grams of Potassium Chloride and 4g of Sodium Chloride...take away the chloride (50%) and that leaves 3g of potassium and 2g of Sodium (Potassium for adult male is 4700mg a day) so i am getting enough salt and the other 1700mg of potassium i get from bananas peppers watermelon and vegetables....improved my Afib greatly

Most folks do lack iodine. Pretty sure I read that most pocessed foods use regular non-iodized salt. If I feel like I need iodine I use a couple of drops of Lugol's in water or tea, or add it to my electrolyte drink.

People on Keto need to be aware that the goal of Keto is not Ketosis. It's a rather unfortunate name in that way. The goal of Keto is eliminating exogenous carbs, not staying in Ketosis 24/7. Every day you should get kicked out of Keto from one of your meals using higher amounts of protein to ensure you absorb the Electrolytes in it. If you're constantly in Ketosis you will lose too much Potassium and Sodium, leading to electrolyte deficiencies. This is why Inuits have a gene the makes it harder for them to obtain Ketosis. Their diet is so rich in fats over Protein that it's harder for them to escape Ketosis the usual way.

I add salt to all my meals when cooking. If my heart doesn't like me being thirsty, I'll have a drink afterwards. That's what happens when you have too much salt, you get thirsty.

So... Might not be useful to everyone, but I really recommend not listening to people saying salt is bad for you, unless it's your MD and you have a condition, or that you over indulge in junk food. I've had extremelly painful migraine episodes since I was 18, to the point of saying awake full nights, banging my head against a wall and crying sometimes. I've had one this summer after trying to reduce my food intake. Had to be prescribed opium to lessen the pain. You know what change that ? Taking Electrolyte supplements once a day and eating less carbs. Being overweight and sweating a lot, I had no idea that I was missing salt/potassium. I even drank up to 5L of water a day. So if like me you have salty sweat, and sweat a lot, don't give up on salt.

I suffered with migraines from my teenage years up until going through menopause. I feel for you. It is horrible, nausea inducing pain. Back then I would have never thought I was low on electrolytes or dehydrated. Low carb and balancing electrolytes is key. No doubt too much water without electrolyte balance can make it worse. Salt gets a bad rap because the standard american diet lacks potassium and magnesium.

Craving salt is also a symptom of zinc deficiency, which is definitely a serious problem, and may be common since so many things deplete it, like caffeine, stress, smoking (as shown in the study), refined carbs, alcohol, many meds and chemicals, and excessive exercise. But Diet Doctor's diet keeps us supplied with zinc, which is fantastic!

One reason that this discussion goes nowhere is because it ignores patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). One reason that CHF is easy to ignore is because the statistics are misleading; about 1% of the population worldwide. HOWEVER, CHF is the leading cause of hospitalization in people over 65, and is frequently undiagnosed. Many docs who tell patients to eat less salt do so because the patient either has CHF or is a candidate for it (diabetic, overweight, sedentary, aging, smoking, alcohol, heart disease). Is it fair (or even safe) to tell patients at risk for CHF to freely eat sodium (salt)? Perhaps worse, is it reasonable to tell those patients to ignore their physicians?

There is always a problem with epidemiology . Confounding causes are always a problem. Generally people who always salt their food tend to be non compliers. In other words they tend to be people who do not follow advice. This tiny higher mortality could be due to a host of other things such as smoking or drinking, and nothing to do with the salt.

A 1.28 hazard ratio is not small. What that means: You have a 28% increased risk of dying over the course of the study as compared to the control group. That's quite significant. That's almost on par with not exercising.

It's like what the good doctor says in the end... as long as you're "eating a healthy diet, taking care of yoursself and prioritizing your health and you're adding nicotine while you're eating your vegetables, while you're eating minimally processed food, there's really no evidence that adding nicotine in that scenario is harmful".
