Does Sonic Colors Work 10 Years Later?

Hey everyone, thanks for all the support! I've never had a video grow this fast so I'm not too aware of the proper channel of communication for update type stuff! Know that my rate of uploads is pretty slow since my content is normally a lot longer, and this is something I can only work on during my free time. Even though I was pretty turned off from the game while it was new (and I still am to some extend). I can't help but miss the decently positive attitude the sonic fandom had between 2010-2012. It really did feel like we were going to get consistently good games again.

Having you talk so positively about Sonic being back after Colors gives me joy. I think it's true. Colors brought a lot of good for the franchise back when it released, and even if it may have been the start of an era people don't like nowadays, it was still exactly what was needed at the time, and it still carries its positive qualities from back then.

I do feel bad for Sega; the fandom being as divided and wishy-washy about, well...everything, doesn't make their job easy. I just hope they can pull through for the 30th, or it might be curtains for the blue blur. I'm not saying it as a definitive thing: but after everything with Forces and all else, I'd be seriously questioning the continued viability of a property that put me and my company through all that. I love the Adventure 1 style of hub worlds (the 10-minute emerald-hunts are a pain, that I agree with!) and varied gameplay with other characters. I also enjoy what colors, and some of the better boost formula games like it brought to the table: The speed, the exploration, all of that is euphoric...but to restricted to "just Sonic." (Heck, I'll even say I don't mind the werehog!) My point, and to Nova's point, is: We need to agree to disagree. If we don't let up, Sega might just give up...and then we all have nothing of our favorite fastest thing alive.

I do actually like the emerald hunting stages legitimately. I just don't think they were needed in 2010, and going forward I won't cry if they're missing. I did a video about them a while ago going more into the treasure hunting stages, but my editing style was still new and I don't entirety agree with everything I said anymore

Sega will never give up on Sonic, he’s their flagship property, and unlike the Capcom/Mega Man situation, even though he’s not the most lucrative he’s still the most publicly acknowledged and recognizable. Worst case scenario, they’ll keep failing until the sun goes out.

Like I said, I'm much more of a "Don't stop, just go" kinda guy in Sonic. But my instinct says they're cool and that's my usually my best measurement fo Sonic games 😅.

I'm Sorry but NO! Colors is a decent game in my opinion but Sonic Unleashed is WAY better. First of all, Unleashed was one of the last mainline sonic game that had a great story. One of the last times Sonic and everyone else was portrayed with RESPECT! No BaLdY mCnOsE HaIr jokes. Even the jokes Unleashed had was actually funny and charming and not cringy and painful like Colors. The tone of the story of Unleashed was a perfect mix of ligharted fun and serious moments. Something that Colors and especially lost world and Forces got wrong. The daytime stages are way more fun and exlerating than most stages in Colors. Even the 2D sections in Unleashed were less boring to go through than Colors. The thing about the Werehog is it wasn't nearly as bad as people made it out to be. Even at the time. The werehog in my opinion was good and a nice change of pace from the fast paced day stages. Unlocking new combos was neat. Making the combat more interesting and fun each time I come back to it. The exploration in the night stages is so rewarding with finding collectables and the Sun medals. Speaking of the Sun and Moon medals I do agree that's only part of Unleashed I really don't like. Could've handled a bit better but at least rewards players of exploring the levels both day and night stages (night stages preferably). Unleashed was the best game to do Hub Worlds. Not too big, but still immersive and speaking to the NPCs can be really interesting. I just feel like Sonic Unleashed was one of the last games that had passion and love made into it. Sure the early 2010s quality of gameplay is better than some of the mid late 2000s sonic games. No arguing that but SERIOUSLY, the awful writing, the cringy meme humor, and the just sonic gameplay mentality really makes me dislike almost ALL of the 2010s sonic aside from Mania. I rather play Sonic 06 than Sonic Forces or even COLORS. At least the level design and some of the ideas of that game was actually interesting.

@@NovaZoneTV Its not really just me, there are people who dislike Colors and the other games in the 2010s. I'm never saying the dark age was perfect either. NO WAY. Honestly NO era of Sonic was perfect even in the 90s. But there are some things the Adventure era and even the dark age did better than the 2010s. Especially when it comes to the charization of Sonic and everybody else. I'll say this, Colors and Generations were good games and and fresh at the time. The early 2010s of Sonic were great. But 2013 and onward is what I feel is when the whole "Sonic is back" started to fall apart. Especially with boom.

Hey thanks man! I'm just gonna list all the tracks I used for anyone else with the question for the future since this video's doing better than my usual content. Intro: Planet Wisp Hub World 01:28: I accidently used a remix of Aquarium Park from my hard drive instead of an in-game track. I guess I'm not the only one who's made the mistake with this track because "BlackBlur7", who's known for posting only in game music, uploaded said song as "Aquarium Park Act 4". My favorite Sonic game ever, though granted, I've only played a handful of these so far, but god wasn't this one fun to play through. I knew I was gonna have a blast the moment the intro started playing - a song I still cherish to this day. I'm really glad Colors got a new chance with the upcoming remaster, and I'm happy to see a lot of people thinking the same.

I was a bit more excited for Colors, but Sonic 4 was definitely in my mind more. I checked the now defunct website daily. Though I was also in the group of denialists about it until Generations released and I kinda accepted "wow, Sonic 4 is the peak of mediocrity".

@@NovaZoneTV I was a part of a Sonic Forum around that time that's now defunct. We were somewhat unique in that we thought there were plenty of good and bad games in both major eras of Sonic, but we definitely veered more towards Pre-Heroes being the good part, but not to the point that it was on some golden pedastal, so seeing Sonic 4's wonky physics, blatant pandering, and ugly pre-rendered assets was an instant write off. Colors meanwhile just kinda... didn't do anything wrong in its reveal? Like it was just clean, and colorful, and fun. Sonic, great looking worlds, the good part of Unleashed, looked like a good time.

4:35 I've played Dragon Road in Unleashed Project and, at least with those controls from Generations, I don't find the 3D platforming segment here to be that big of a deal tbh. It slows the level down quite a bit, but the shadows are also very pretty IMO. As for Colors, big huge positive of course that it does not have the Werehog and not so great hubworld and mandatory medal hunting from Unleashed and in its place the Wisps are a pretty solid *optional* exploration system. It's a good looking game too, especially on the Wii. Very colo(u)rful, I might add! But compared to the daytime stages of Unleashed or to Modern stages of Generations (both of which themselves have separate approaches for how to handle boost gameplay), I always found the level design to be rather shallow and overly reliant on blocky 2D platforming sections. This is especially the case in the two or three 'extra' Acts of each zone, but most of the main attractions are still IMO the weakest level design of the three games. There are some standouts, like Asteroid Coaster Act 1 and Aquarium Park Acts 1/4 (have a cool Generations stage mod that combines these into one and redesigns to play without Wisps, with my only complaint being that the red rings weren't put in), but for the most part these aren't levels I return to if I'm looking for peak boost gameplay in either 2D or 3D. That said the game is still completely serviceable in 2023 and did satisfy the needs of the time after 06 crashed and burned and Unleashed still suffered from all the 'padding' gameplay plus performance slowdowns on its original hardware, so I can see why it was successful and could be recommended. And the Wii limitations were...maybe a bit tight for too much more. In the end though I'm much more lukewarm compared to either Generations or Unleashed Project however. 5:20 Agree about red rings. Actually wish Mania had added these! In similar way to Generations where you can find them all across multiple playthroughs. Oh and nice sorta mini review of Sonic 4 Episode 1. This game is awful. Nuff said.

Dragon Road: I meant I hate medal progression with the text. Although i do prefer the physics from Gens over Unleashed. Not sure if you had an Unleashed physics mod on while playing. And for that area specifically, I actually REALLY love the cyberspace level that redid it a tad. Level design isnt as memorable as Gens though honestly, I've started liking Colors a bit more since making this. This video was never my "every single Colors related thought" type thing but you can probably tell from the length compared to my usual. Eventually I'll come back for a new Colors vid, but thats a few years down the road

(Replying to previous here) Do you like Colors more than Generations, or simply more than you did when you made this video? Just clarifying what you meant there; in general Colors vs Generations is a somewhat split opinion in the community though I personally prefer the more exciting (in both 3D and 2D) level design of Generations even though there's less of them and no special powers like the Wisps for exploring. (Other than in Planet Wisp of course, which is my least favorite level.) And I get what you mean now in Unleashed, thankfully in Unleashed Project it's just the Generations format of five optional ones to find per level. In terms of my mod loadout, I do what is pictured on the screenshot for 'Unleashed Project: The Complete Addon' over on GameBanana, though I do NOT change the Homing Attack to the Boost button (it's still on Jump, just as in vanilla Generations).

I like Gens more than Colors. I mean that I of today like Colors more than I did about 2 years ago. Most of my 3D Sonic opinions fluctuate rank wise but Generations as my favorite boost entry is for sure. Yeah, homing attack onsharing Boost is one of the things that makes base game Unleashed turbo annoying. Crazy how it took them over 20 years to give homing attack a dedicated button.

I did have a lot of fun watching my buddy, who's also a big Sonic nerd, have fun playing the game on PS4. Though the credits were insane. We added Hatsune Miku music during the silent part
