Let's be honest, those who may be bothered by having an introduction like we've got in SQ42 are probably not going to enjoy SC as a whole considering the rest of the game is essentially the same thing in sandbox form, so people will either have to get used to the idea of actually appreciating slow moments for what they are or look elsewhere for their next adrenaline fix.

A little bit I’m not sure what people expected, with CR’s dev pedigree and the pressure on s42 from years of waiting it was always going to load up on cinematics and story and worldbuilding.

I loved it. I have rewatched it maybe five or six times now. I don't think I have ever watched or played a prologue that often.

I'm glad that CR learned that longer intros are not always better for the game. Wing Commander 3 was crazy long, then WC 5, then WC 4, then SQ42, then WC 2, and the shortest was WC 1 likely due to file size and what computers could do back then.

It feels like the turret section went on a wee bit too long, but it may have only felt longer to *watch* because the enemy ships were moving so slowly with virtualy no evasive maneuvers... which makes sense because it's a tutorial. That being said, it DOES create a sort of... tonal dissonance? Like, this opening is EPIC; it feels almost like a finale to game, not an opener, which I loved... buuuut it *does* make the switch to gameplay feel that much more jarring when the enemy ships then liesurely float by your turret so that you can pour nonstop, uncontested fire into them as if they couldn't care less if they die.

Right in the middle at 3rd place feels correct to avoid the restrictive character interaction movies.

Secret word was more cryptic with the back ground noise cheering away. But challenge excepted for the third time! Keep up the great work!

Danny, love your work, man, but I just couldn't hear your words clearly around the 22:00 minute mark. So, it's no secret for me this time. Having said that, you left out Wing Commander:Privateer and Privateer 2. Even though 2 was done by Erin instead of Chris, I found the game very engaging. In fact, while I played 1, 2, and 3, I only really remember Privateer 2 and Freelancer. It could be said that Freelancer wasn't part of the franchise, being published by Microsoft, but it was started by Chris and we have the Freelancer ship in game. Anyway, glad you gave us your insights on the Con. I appreciate a more seasoned approach to gaming as I am slightly seasoned myself. GT

I'm kind of surprised that SQ42 is the third shortest intro, only beaten by the games that came on floppy disks... But then, it never looked excessive in the demo.

The 4th longest being SQ42 is surprising, and I have a feeling if CR had his way he would have prolonged it even more considering how long that intro section went. But if anything, I'm surprised CR made WC 4 so short compared to 3 when he had so much more space to play with on the disc. But I guess he realized he had so much to play with when he got to his next iteration.

Thanks for the inadvertent WC nostalgia trip ... ahh those heady days of having to swap CDs between missions in Wing Commander 3 ;) I think playthroughs always feel longer when you're watching someone else rather than engaging with it yourself (especially the first time - which is why I am now avoiding watching the Sq42 prologue again)

I think the intro teeser is awesome and sets up the story well. As long as I can skip cut scenes after I have seen them.

I’m happy with it, it will play like a more FPS version of Detroit become human which was massively highly rated, and we only get to experience something once for the first time so I’m pumped with it.

I played all the games as they came out. I was more excited SQ42 even 3 years ago, but now I'm getting old and feeling it. I don't know that I'll be able to really enjoy it now.

I'm expecting a lot more actual gameplay from Squadron 42 compared to Wing Commanders. Those were basically interactive movies with a bit of space combat in between while Sq42 will have you both flying and walking around.

the prologue has to establish the setting for a world no one really knows, the prologue has to establish the who, what, where, why and how (lots of why and how)

knowing the attention span of most people today, i get why some say it’s too long. sometimes you just want an adrenaline rush and not just eye candy. for those players i hope there’s a skip option especially for replays of the game since i imagine the feel of combat will greatly appeal to them and that's probably mainly what they want.

I remember playing Wing Commander 1, and loved it along with Privateer. I don't remember why, but I never played 2, maybe it had system requirements that I didn't meet at the time. 3 was amazing when it came out, I remember trying so hard to save the behemoth in the third one, and the intro having Malcom McDowell, Mark Hamill, and John Rhys-Davies was so cool. I think the story in 4 was probably the best, at least from what I recall. 5 was fun, but it felt like a letdown that you weren't playing as Blair any more. Also, not shown here, but Starlancer was a really fun game as well, I know a lot of people didn't like chasing torpedoes, but those were some really intense moments.

Fun idea for a video... but WC5 isn't actually a CR project. It was done at Origin after he left to form Digital Anvil to make Freelancer and The WC Movie. Also, to an extent, I think the full intro to WC4 would be a better comparison for this purpose. The short mission after Blair takes off from the sand planet isn't quite a tutorial but it's short and sort of a refresher to get a feel for combat. After that the FMV long intro continues on for quite a while, so in a way that first mission is a bit like that initial turret sequence in the SQ42 intro

I'm having a hard time imagining what people thought SQ42 was going to be. Several of the other games had just movies you were watching while SQ42 at least you're walking around. You do have several cut scenes in SQ42 which probably bring the total intro time up out of 3rd place, but it fits pretty well with the rest of the content and serves to excite rather than drag on like a lot of intros.

I'm not sure that 12:22 is totally fair, since I'm not sure the turret calibration sequence really counts. The first true combat isn't till 24:15, Which instead of fourth would make it the longest, though if the player sped up the walking a bit, maybe could shave off 2 minutes and come in third.

"How long is the SQ42 intro" is actually not an easy question to answer. At what point during that do you cut it off and say "intro done, this is now gameplay"? It's ... actually quite subjective. I think the people complaining are counting ALL OF IT as intro -- i.e. to them it's no longer the intro when you get to fly your first fighter, which ... we never saw, so it's like an hour and a half of "intro". By this metric, it's a very distant six out of six. Your "When we get into the turret" was ... probably a reasonable point to pick, as we're clearly in tutorial territory at that point. Arguably some of the walking around is tutorial too -- teaching you about movement, equipment, and so on, and a "When we get control of the character" metric would give us a much shorter time -- still third position, but much closer to #1 and #2. It could easily have been fourth position also, if "when we shoot our first real enemy" was the benchmark rather than arriving in the turret. But all of that just goes to show how unusual that first chapter of SQ42 really is, with introduction, narrative, exposition, tutorial and gameplay all woven together like that.

ah the Kilrathi. Hobbs was the most memorable character. don't remember Prophecy really. the branching story was great for the time. funny that it was the 3rd shortest, right before all the live action filmed ones

wing commander 3 and 5 intro, WOW i think i would have taken it back to the shop and asked for a refund lol. reason for refund sir? i can make a cup of tea and toasted cheese sandwich and then pop to the shops 5 miles away and come back and im still in the intro. that's way way to long to wait to get into the game. i hope that came with a big skip intro button? i would rather learn the hard way than sit and listen to 23 mins of those intros to be fair but thats my dyslexia attention of a dead amoeba ha ha. but SQ42 seems to have nailed the just the right amount of time to give you the information, and the very much needed interactions and freedom to just look around, which the wing commanders desperately would have needed to keep my attention held for that long. This is also the first time seeing the SQ42 video so thank you for this, it looks interesting.

I think it's fine, it's a bit long to watch but I don't think it's too long to play. The experience will be different when it's interactive.

Well, i timed it and it was 38 minutes of gameplay and the rest was "cinematic" and the menu part. But i am not complaining. If, after all this time, it's gonna have long epic prologue, then i'm all for it. And i didn't even pledge because of SQ42, as i don't really care about single player games that much. But it's a nice "lore dump" for the Star Citizen players (and it came with the pledge.) :D

interesting observation. The thing is .. old games had cinematics seoperate to the in engine gameplay - now it blends, I would not feel the long cinematics if it was not for the crashes durring citcon

Yeah, the "intro" to SQ42 was sorta split into 3 long cutscenes interspersed with gameplay. Only counting to the first time you can do something doesn't seem super accurate.

Personally I didn't feel like the intro was too long and coming in third out of the 6 games seems to support that. Three and Five did feel too long.

Can you do a video on all the consumer laws that seem to be broken and the possibility of class-action against CIG? Know any lawyers in the crowd?

lol, good luck with that one. If there has not been a class action by now there wont be one related to the kicskstarter or the much less after. They are well protected by the buyers acknowledging that they are not buying a game or anything but concept art. Talk to any lawyer and they'll tell you the same. If you paid CIG any amount you should have read the fine print.

@@SpaceDad42 Unfortunately what we paid for is conceptual. Ideas for a game and some jpegs. Games can make ads that are very different form the actual game as long as they include something like the ad in the game. If Ebony and Hero Wars can get away with extremely deceptive ads CIG can get away with making the game somewhat different than its original pitch. Squadron 42 and Star Citizen are still within the scope of the original pitch. If actual lawyers are buying into the game and no one has successfully sued after 12 years that should clue you in.

Fine print doesn’t mean shit in certain circumstances. Can I out a sign on my store that says no blacks or gays a,lowed, or do you think there may be some laws to protect against that? Idiot.

Imagine being bothered by just over an hour of insane sci fi space battle bombastic awesomeness. MGS: Phantom Pain had roughly the same sort of length for its prolgue and wasnt nearly as engaging.

In the presentation the amount of in game cinematic cutscenes felt a bit excsessive which is fine if the rest of SQ42 has a lot of gameplay and % wise game play trumps clip scenes overall.

Wow Wing Commander 3 is long (WC3). I am still only about 9 months into SC and I have never heard of WC until now or at least never understood people were talking about whatever this is lol.

Brother, first of, it is very hard to follow you when your voice competes with the audio in the background. Secondly, SQ42 is the prequel to SC. If I understand the clues right, like the ship the player will serve on, the Stanton, SQ42 will set the stage of the PU and how it got there. It makes total sense using the full potential of cinematics because later in the MMO part there will be none. So if they play that part right SQ42 sets a wonderful foundation for players that start with SQ42 and then join the PU. Of course people who can't wait and want to play right now even if its unfinished can hardly be fully satisfied. That's why I am not playing, just peeking in once in a while. And I backed 2013. Totally fine with the progression overall.

Honestly, if the cutscenes, interactive narrative story telling is too much for somebody, they shouldn't be playing a story game in the first place. This is a linear story game that you are playing, not a COD deathmatch lobby, you should be enjoying the high-quality narrative experience while playing and complaining that you can't "shoot ships" right away has to be some rather shallow reviewers, thats why Arena Commander was made.
