This could be an overall caloric issue. The types of foods that contain primarily glucose, but not sucrose (table sugar), are starchy vegetables, grains, legumes, dairy products, etc. Meaning the glucose containing foods are not as hyper-palatable as the sucrose containing foods. Therefore, I'd like to see what the overall calorie consumption was when we categorize a "high-sucrose" or "high-glucose" group.

That's right. Nobody knows what causes cancer outside of an immune system not doing its job. I asked 5 oncologist and they all said the same thing. Kids get cancer and they haven't had time to do much eating or drinking. Sugar is empty calories and a good enough reason to consume in moderation. Interesting findings you have there I wasn't aware of.

There is a correlation between people who play basketball and height. Taller people generally play basket ball. Once could reason that because of this association, playing basket ball makes you taller. But we know that’s not the cause. Just because two variables are related ( height and playing basket ball) doesn’t necessarily mean that one causes the other. In this case, tall people gravitate to playing basket ball because they get an advantage . Hope this helps.

@A V One issue with Rhonda Patrick, in my opinion: she emphasizes mechanistic research a lot, when mechanisms don’t always accurately represent outcomes. For example: you burn more fat on a LCHF diet than a LFHC diet, and logic would say that LCHF > LFHC based on that. However, LFHC diets are slightly better than kcal-equated and protein-equated LCHF diets for fat loss according to Hall et al 2017. Outcomes > mechanisms. I have a BS in chemistry, I have made the mistake of overhyping mechanisms in the human body as well. Outcomes > mechanisms.

@@biolayne1 I agree with your point that sugar intake has no "mechanistic" causation in cancer. But since you yourself mentioned that higher sugar intake is usually hand in hand with poor quality diet and excess calories,(which are factors in cancer occurrence), is sugar not indirectly a factor to consider? We know that it's not as simple as just telling a person to stay under a certain sugar consumption limit. Dopamine and pleasure centres light up like a Christmas tree with sugar so we're rarely in complete control to make a decision and just cut our intake off when we've hit that daily limit. Summary: Yes, sugar is not directly linked to cancer incidents but the knock on effects of sugar intake can be linked,(inflammation being another huge factor that I didn't mention above). So why wouldn't we take steps to remove sugar as much as possible if it has these potential "triggers" and very little, if any, positive impact, (other than a dopamine hit or mouth pleasure)? If someone had zero processed sugar in their diet and they came to you for coaching, would you encourage them to add some in? I thought I'd just drop my two cents here. Last December (2022) I overindulged on cake, desserts, sugary coffee shop drinks and ended up feeling my pants becoming tighter. Going back to my previous habits did not fix it, so I cut my sugar intake COMPLETELY, did very minute adjustments to my diet and made sure to put in my daily 10,000 step count. After six weeks I noticed that my belt started to feel a little looser and I could not eat a cookie without thinking "this is disgustingly sweet". After ten weeks I was wearing my belt at the next hole, one more than I was back in December. I did not measure myself before starting, but I believe that's about an inch of waist. Now is August and I enjoy the occasional sweet indulgent. I do put less than half the amount of sugar than before on my tea, I share a slice of cake with my wife when we go out of which I often don't finish it and hardly put any honey on my oatmeal. Overall I feel great, I'm happy and I enjoy the natural taste of food so much more.

I've always heard that sugar can feed an existing cancer, not that it causes cancer. So maybe there is some truth to that but maybe not. But it's likely more that lots of sugar tends to create fat people and being obese definitely puts one at risk for cancer. But again, it seems to be more of causing an already existing cancer to go from not being non threatening to something concerning.

Correlation != causation is an understatement here. My theory is that sugar, fructose, and everything else has absolutely no effect on the development of cancer cells. Due to the individual caloric requirements of cells in a cancerous tumor, quick carb substrates to be used by tumor to exist and grow (cellular multiplying), like sugars, does indeed worsen the problem by providing adequate fuel for it to get worse. In short, sugar does not cause cancer. Sugar, however, does promote its growth once the cells start to go rogue.
@VernCrisler Жыл бұрын
Only for certain types of cancers.
@theoreticalfitness7701 Жыл бұрын
@@VernCrisler This is an idea cultivated by doctors and missing a huge chunk of context. This is false as an absolute statement. Cancers begin using other substrates when sugar is unavailable or prefer glucose based fuel sources like lactate because it is sugar based and available as waste product from healthy cells . But sugar is always the primary source of energy, but not the only. It uses fat based stuff for other things. Then it moves on to other substrates that are convenient, like if fat is in the tumor's vicinity, or as the host begins to die. Also, a lot of this research is done on lab rats. So, this claim is a theory at best.

Cancer, above all other diseases, has countless secondary causes. But, even for cancer, there is only one prime cause. Summarized in a few words, the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar. - Otto H. Warburg.
@RunOfTheTrill3 жыл бұрын
Warburg was right. But the keyword in that statement is FERMENTATION, not sugar. That statement is more of an observation about excessive glycolysis than it is an indictment on sugar itself. The open question is why do these cancer cells rely predominantly on glycolysis instead of utilizing mitochondrial phosphorylation in the presence of oxygen. Warburg himself believed that the cells had "impaired" respiration capabilities which caused the excessive anaerobiosis and thus cancer.

You now have free circulating sugar, which gets stored as fat, and insulin, which has its own host of problems.
