Disappointing. From what I understand it is partly due that it is hard to cool a floating sensor (IBIS). But other companies can do it, so why not Canon?! How solid is the grip. Any play between the grip and the camera?

A $4500 overheating magnet is crazy You need the cooling grip and USB c power to make it keep up. its really a let down, in the grand scheme of things, and that problem with the door turning the cam off is ... . Imma skip, has to be set up like a tower of power to give its mundane performance

What will be interesting is Canon has a habit of quietly addressing these things via firmware as the months go by so it will be interesting to see if this gets some of those improvements like the original R5 did

I would pick the FX3 if it was strictly for video. The Panasonic S5IIX might be choice if you want something cheaper and it's a bit more usable as a photo camera too. But the best hybrid photo/video camera is the Canon R5II and Nikon Z8 hands down with the Z8 winning on specs and the R5II being slightly better in the field

You’re choosing between dedicated cinema cameras (FX3) and a hybrid camera (R5ii)… I’d more likely choose between the FX3 and R5C/C80.

@@learningcameras no chance they were going to release 4K60 over-sampled on this due to the overheating problems they already knew they had. The PR on it would have been horrendous. This grip looks like a cheap after thought from Canon. The absolute answer is the already years-old Nikon Z9: Everthing in one body. It's better than the R5 was at launch which is good but for whatever reason it falls short of where the R5 is today after firmware updates and the Nikon Z8. The Sony A7RV overheats pretty easily too but that's more of a photo camera so I doubt there are many people using it as a dedicated video camera or hybrid camera

So Canon is charging a premium, but can’t figure out overheating and they’ve had four years to do so? Meanwhile, the competition is like “hold my beer” lol Sony and Nikon have also had the same battery in their camera since what like 2018 with added features and stack sensors shooting 8K and 4k modes.
@learningcamerasАй бұрын
Definitely quite a few things it could be...maybe Canon's processor just puts out more heat, maybe the codec is less efficient, maybe the camera doesn't have ample cooling, maybe the battery is getting pushed more...who knows. The camera can record in the heat with this grip at least, it's just going to be a bit louder while doing it since the fan needs to be set to high. And keep in mind this test was with 8k oversampled so there are plenty of other modes that don't overheat, they just don't have the same level of detail
@kifley19Ай бұрын

… well, since I using the Sony FX 3 and FX 30 overheating is a issue of the past. 😏 Even my a9 III has no major problems. Interesting to see, that Canon isn’t able to learn. 🤔
@learningcamerasАй бұрын
I figured with this battery grip, it could be equal to the FX3 but it isn't quite if you're in hot outside environments. Keep in mind Sony has it easier with the FX3 by putting a non-oversampled 12MP sensor in the camera. The Canon R5II how I tested it was oversampled 8k so MUCH more processor intensive and much more detail than the FX3 can achieve
@77drisАй бұрын
Well, Canon did learn. He said the original R5 now actually lasts longer and does better with overheating than the best competition from Sony and Nikon. Canon will fix this too with some firmware updates. Though, to be fair, my friend has an R5 II and it never overheats or even gives a warning. He said it's better than his original R5 for where he lives.
@CTcoreytrevorАй бұрын
This is unreal. A professional videographer should never, ever, ever worry about overheating. I was actually considering this camera until I saw this video. Even if it only overheats a little bit, some of the time.....I would never even consider buying it.
@learningcamerasАй бұрын
I mean the grip essentially solves overheating, but it does mean using the fan at a noticeably high speed and is way louder at those speeds than the FX3 and S5IIX which are my other 2 cameras with active cooling. If you're indoors, you can get away with the slower fan speeds. So it does fix overheating, but it doesn't add any functionality and the implementation feels a bit 3rd party since it doesn't have an auto mode that just gradually increases fan speeds as needed to prevent shutting down or ability to change while recording. So it wasn't as good as I hoped but with this fan grip on high, the camera shouldn't actually overheat

I'm curious to see if they can improve it via firmware. The R5 was definitely worse when it first came out...even indoors it wouldn't last that long so while the R5II overheats faster than the R5 now, it's in a better starting place
