I am training my dog now to not run to other dogs. This lady walking her dog on a leash asks me if her dog can come and say Hi. But I said No because I am training my dog to not run to other dogs. She then asks "You're training your dog to not say Hi to other dogs?" I said I'm training my dog to not run away. And she still asks if her dog can come say Hi. I said "Nope" and walked away. She mumbled something but I ignored her LOL. Let me train my dog and respect my wishes.

My dog has the problem of running up to other dogs. Even worse when it's smaller dogs like Malteses and poms because she's a sheep dog and tries to round them up. I was kind of hoping for something useful to tell me how to fix this but still this was a very good video and thanks for uploading this!

Just happened to me today at the park where leashes are required. The dog first stood at a distance and barked. Then ran straight at me and my dog. When I yelled at the owner to call her dog she just said.. “he only wants to play, he’s friendly!” I was not having it. And shooed the dog away and told her she needed to keep her dog on a leash. I was told to “calm down, it’s fine”. They’ve obviously have never seen a dog fight before… They don’t seem to understand it’s for their dog’s safety too.

All dogs and dog owners are different the sooner you realise this the better. Everyone walks there dogs to the dogs best abilities. If you don't want any other dog in the world meeting your dogs YOU have the problem not everyone else. Dogs who don't have excellent recall who are friendly still have to be allowed to run and be social. Your idea that you have command of all the space you walk your dogs and everyone else should obey to suit you is rediculous. The solution is the sooner you learn how to meet other dogs and their owners in ALL situations the better. YOU NEED TRAINING NOT YOUR DOGS

I've had the same thing said to me!!! "If you're dog isn't friendly you shouldn't bring her out". We were waiting for Vince outside the grocery store and it was too hot for them to stay in the car.. The lady wanted her kid to pet my dogs.. I was like lady, this is not a petting zoo. I've also had people with out of control dogs charge up to us and same thing.. If you're dog's not friendly... Uhm no.. Control YOUR dog!! I hate it when that happens! :( I'm sorry you had to deal with that!

You need to differenciate between dogs being friendly and socialable wanting to meet other dogs which is a natural thing for a dog to do and dogs being out of control and aggressive.

Hi Kristin, Bet you didn't think when you posted this in 2015 that someone would be quoting it 6 years later! But I used it for a rant in a couple of doggy groups I moderate on Facebook about a similar incident that happened to me this morning in Queens Park (Sydney, Australia). I thought you might like to read the rant! 🐶 ^Robert Sometimes I despair walking Jet in Queens Park - like this morning. On our circuit around the outside of the park, I saw a mid-sized, high energy dog running up to other dogs at the lower end of the Waverley Playing Fields. My black lab Jet is reactive and does not "like" these type of dogs. So I chose a route to give the dog a wide berth. But of course, the dog and Jet sensed each other - reactive dogs seem to have neon signs above them flashing, "Come and check me out, I dare you!" And the dog made a beeline for Jet. I picked up my pace to avoid the dog and called out to the other dog walker, "Please call your dog." Three times! He gave me a dumb look as if I was speaking a foreign language and eventually said, "Your dog's the problem, not mine. This is a dog park." There followed the usual hairy-chested hurling of insults back and forth as I picked up my pace again and distracted Jet with treats. The other dog walker carried on walking, oblivious as his dog stared at Jet and considered his next move. Thankfully, the dog followed his owner, and the ugly (and potentially dangerous) moment passed, although the adrenaline coursed high in me for the rest of the walk (and I can still feel it now!). Jet calmed down with the treats but remained on a heightened lookout for other dogs. In case anyone thinks this is another case of "old man yells at a Queens Park dog walker", watch this dog training tips video. The situation described by the dog trainer is precisely what I endured this morning. And as she says (and I've experienced!), it can end "horrifically". Oh, and by the way, just to correct the dog walker's assertion, Queens Park is NOT a "dog park". It is a recreational and sports park, managed by Centennial Parklands, where we have the privilege of letting our dogs run off-leash. As Centennial Parklands states on its website: "Dogs are welcome in the Parklands, however we ask dog owners and professional walkers to be considerate of other visitors and make sure that their dogs are under control at all times." In short, as dog walkers and owners, we are responsible for controlling our dogs. And this includes not letting them run over to other park users and dogs! (Rant over.)

Thank you! Unreliable off leash dogs are one of my biggest pet peeves. I've had many off leash dogs run up to my dogs while on and off leash. With one dog I had who was not dog friendly, I had on a long line for training, a small dog came running full speed towards my dog whom I'm trying to keep distracted, I see the owner and say, " please call your dog back, mine is not friendly" she replied with, "oh its okay, he's nice" her dog runs up to mine and lunges for her face! Needless to say my dog was not accepting of that and I ended up have hold back 60+ lbs of reactive AmStaff! The owner of the small dog, after having to chase him around us to get him leashed again, had the nerve to look at me and say, "You really shouldn't have that kind of dog out like this."

OMG, just had the same thing happen with my Amstaff and my terrier pup. Both of them were on leashes and an English bulldog pup just ran at them straight from the owner's car. Who got the blame when Amstaff grabbed this pup's jowls? My dog. Lucky for them my Amstaff is all about holding dogs off and won't bite in or this innocent pup with its idiot owners would've ended up dead. I am so angry. I said, "you must learn to Control your dog - have it leashed if you can't call it back." Nope, they weren't listening. I was told I had an aggressive pitty and sworn at. Sick of people like this.

This happened to me twice today, and it's so frustrating. I have a leashed, muzzled grey with an injury that I'm walking, and despite seeing him leashed, and me clearly trying to avoid them, they let their dogs approached, and then got angry with me when I called them out and told them they don't know if the other dog is receptive, so they should control their dogs away from leashed dogs. They never take responsibility. One guy didn't think it was an issue for his small, fluffy puppy to approach my ex racing greyhound, because 'it's a puppy, and if I knew ANYTHING about dogs, I'd know that adult dogs never hurt puppies'. Yeah, well mate, I'm glad you're certain of that, but I'd rather not take any chances, thank you, given my grey is looking at your puppy as if it's a chew toy. Why people would let their dogs approach a muzzled dog is beyond me.

If you can't control the dog, you need to either A) give space when you see a dog and work on control from a greater space, this is where obedience classes can work wonders B)have equipment that is humane but can help you control the dog until you can train the right behaviour. Usually I only opt for option B if I feel the owner will lose control of the dog physically, not due from "surprise or out of the blue" moments. Teach him to ignore dogs when he sees them. This can work well if you play with your dog while other dogs are around (ball or tug toy), so he habituates to the other dogs and realizes it's way more fun to be with you and pay attention to you.

I do exactly that, if my dog it's off leash, I call him back, put the leash and walk away. However, the other day I was walking around my neighborhood, when I spotted my neighbor's husky. His husky start the fight and I was the only one trying to break them, she (my neighbor) just stood there in complete silence. I HATE WHEN PEOPLE JUST WON'T TAKE RESPONSABILITY FOR THEIR DOGS My dog wasn't friendly with other dogs, and after that, he is even less

I've been in situations like this, and it is on of the most frustrating things to experience as a pet owner. It is even more frustrating when owners purposefully allow their dog out in public off leash and do not even stay to supervise. I have had to fend off dogs who were rushing towards me and my dog (who never goes out without a leash) and the owners were no where in site! There definitely needs to be an increase of awareness and enforcement proper etiquette to prevent situations like this.
@rodsreel
@rodsreel 5 жыл бұрын
Proper etiquette is the answer but its not I'm right and your wrong, most of the time owners scream at me get your dogs away from my dogs. They have to learn how to allow other dog owners time to get to there dogs and then take the situation from there. People walk dogs off lead and some dogs just love to meet other dogs it natural dog behaviour. I feel sorry for these dogs which are kept away from all other dogs its not natural for the dog and 99% of ther time the dogs are looking to meet the other dogs but the owners say no their dog.

@@rodsreel No you are going to get your dog shot like that. That is why dogs run in packs, if you are a strange dog running up they are going to defend their pack, which is including their humans, THAT is their natural instinct. Not all dogs like eachother, just like humans. You are the annoying dog owner I see that expects others to control your dog and our own. Not all people like dogs either. If you don't have time to get to your dogs they are not in your control that is irresponsible on your part. How do you not know this?

My dog came from Romania (I’m in England) and he grew up on the streets with many other dogs, fighting for his food and his life. Until the Dog Shelter took him in and we adopted him. The problem we have is that whenever he is off the leash he will run and bark at other dogs he sees. Full speed and looking very aggressive, he has no aggressive intent and just wants to play as his tail is wagging. But people sometimes get scared. Could u help me train my dog to stop this?

Preach it! I have a dog selective dog, but he hates more dogs than he likes. He is one that will engage in a fight just because the dog is near. He is always on leash though, always. If we are on a walk he is on a 6 foot leash and stays in a heel by my side, we avoid other dogs, if another dog and its owner just appear around the turn we turn around and go the other way making it very clear we don't wanna interact with another dog. I have people complain that I shouldn't have my dog out in public if he doesn't like other dogs, my response? You shouldn't have your dog out in public if you can't control it and keep it away from unknown dogs.

+edward gomez Generally speaking aggression is not a breed specific trait and most dog LEARNED to be aggressive as their defense mechanism. The best way to prevent aggresion in dog is similar to how you would a child; treat him with love, punish if wrong, good behavior comes with praise and reward, etc. But keep everything balance don't overpraise or overpunish. Be consistent with your rules whatever you set it up; eg. the dog is not allowed to bolt out of front door then you stick it with that rule *WITH EVERY SINGLE DOOR.* Off course this is a very very generalized idea of raising a dog, and you'd quickly noticed that aggression in dog often triggers by a specific stimuli eg; men with beards and hat. It is important that you never force your dog out of it as your dog is trying to tell you "IM FREAKING OUTTT HELP MEE!!" again, refers back to the defense mechanism. To counter that reaction, whenever your dog see a man with hat and beard, praise and reward. If your dog is barking and lunging, move furthur away until he/she is calm then praise and reward. This process WILL takes months and is a crucial part of puppyhood, don't give up!! SOURCE: -2 yrs/o German Shepherd -7 m/o Australian Shepherd

+edward gomez aggressive nature yes, because they need to move stock and the only way to move stock is intimidate the poop out of them, if they don't move then, you bite them. Border Collies are very passive, gentle dogs but they are very controlling, they are like the friend that never wants you to have fun, lol. So are Border Collie's aggressive, no. Aggression is learned, some dogs prefer to use aggression right off the bat and realize "wow that worked", and some other dogs are forced to use it because of fight or flight response in a poor situation. Of course in terms of genetics you may have a dog that is more flighty compared to fighty, Luna has been fighty since 3 months, she is not a dog to back down, roll over and pee if attacked. Socialize your dog very well, avoid poor situations (dog parks in my case), keep a very close relationship with your dog and hope for the best. We can't control everything in life, I'm realizing that as time goes on with Luna. But we can make the best out of what life throws us

+edward gomez Important to take puppy obedience classes right away, OR basic beginner obedience. Sign up for a dogsport like a sheep herding class for dogs. Your BC will need to express lots of energy in a positive activity. Balance that with long walks or hikes (not stupid running like many owners do which destroys the dog). Exposure to other dogs and smells is super important to any dog. Walk your dog around the pet store on leash just for a few minutes, using gentle obedience commands, then leave the store and reward him with treats. Do lots of one-on-one play time with your dog. If you don't find an activity, a dog will get pent-up frustration and express it in a negative behavior. Not its fault.

This happened to me twice. Though, my border collie is only a 5 month old puppy and very friendly. I still don't like that other people just let their dog run to other dogs. The first time, we were walking my pup on leash, when a woman unleashed her two dogs. The smaller dog ran up to us and started barking and the bigger dog walked in circles around us. My puppy was nervous and backed up towards us. Of course, the lady didn't have a reliable recall. All we did to avoid this situation was walked as far as we could. And be prepare to grab our puppy, if anything happens. The second time, we were at a festival, when someone just loosen up their leash and just let their dog come up behind my unaware puppy and husband. It startled both of them. My husband moved away from them and that girl with her dog kept following them until she noticed that we didn't like that. Seriously, you never know how the situation is going to end up. Puppies can get into fights too.

I can't believe this isn't common sense. My dog and I have a spot we have always gone to in winter. Now that a few nice days have arrived, we went to our spot and someone had their dog off leash and perfectly under control. I know my dog will charge her dog so I had him on a long line. First thing I see is he takes his toy then fixates on the dog and takes off. It's really hard for me to imagine that someone would think it is okay to just let their dogs go flying off without a care in the world. I agree 100% with you.

Some people say that dogs have to meet off leash or its aggressive.. Which I don't like. Once I was walking with my dog in the woods and both my dog and approaching dog were leashed... Well the owner decides to take it into her hands and mentions something about off leash and then drops the leash. This dog charged up to my dog and I think my dog got a little annoyed because she was leashed and that can be very alarming as a dog to be confined to a space with an unconfined dog charging you! This actually really pissed me off. There was no fight but if this had happened a couple months later after my dog was attacked on the leash from an off leash dog two days in a row, she probably would have been really reactive to an unknown dog charging her on leash.

Of course dog will react different when they on leash they know they are disadvantage .. When there are off leash dogs they get triggerd by this and see them as pray .. Animals are not stupid and it's just nature .. That's why in off leash areas I would never put my dog on a leash when I see dogs run up to him ..

It annoys me too, but my dog isn’t aggressive. He’s completely under control off-leash and I’m trying to train him as he’s still a puppy. He is trained to ignore other dogs and focus on me at all times. If a dog runs up to him (it just happened) he loses focus and disrupts training! It’s not fair...

Marg McManus - Long-leash and whistle recall! The long-leash helped me test him and feel comfortable, I rarely use it now. It would help me stop him even getting close to a dog and pulling him back and then I would praise him. He soon got the idea. Also, the whistle was very good. If he started to run off to a dog I would blow the whistle and it got his attention straight back to me and he would come running back. Then I would praise him again! I also tell him “leave it” and use the “look at me” command which helps him get his focus on me. I also play with a toy or do something that can entertain him when other dogs are around, this makes me seem more interesting than other dogs. You could of course use treats too, I would’ve, but mine isn’t interested in them while outside... Good luck! 💕

+Kristin Crestejo Thank you Kristin, for calling out this important issue that I wish more dog owners were aware of but unfortunately many are clueless. I have a 2 year old female border x aussie who, like Luna, doesn't really care much about other dogs and would quite happily bypass all dogs (except those she knows), in favour of playing with people. She takes serious issue with dogs that run at her and invade her personal space, especially if we're on the other side of the park playing with a ball and minding our own business. I've lost count of the the number of times another dog has intercepted her ball and disappeared with it for 10 minutes while their owner struggles to retrieve it from them, much to our irritation. She recently began resource guarding when dogs run at her (only with toys), which she never used to do but of course, it's my dog who has accusations of anti-social behaviour hurled at her. Ummm...excuse me, my dog was bothering no one before your dog charged her! And the response is always the same; "They were just being friendly/wanted to play/say hi. If your dog's not friendly, they should be kept on leash" ARGGHHHH! I started training her from 9 weeks old (thanks to your brilliant videos, THANK YOU!!) and since then, she's been taught constantly through trick training, obedience, agility, one-on-one training sessions and tracking, so it makes me furious when other people try to deflect blame for THEIR utter lack of understanding. I even had one experience where I was sitting outside a coffee shop and my dog was sitting quietly beside me on leash. As I was talking to someone, I noticed a lady in my peripheral vision dragging her small dog toward my dog (despite her dog pulling backwards on the leash in protest). I heard her say "Come on...come and say hi to this dog! Come on, come on sweetie pie." Knowing my dog would prefer not to interact with small yappy dogs in general, I was about to tell her to keep away but before I had a chance, my dog reacted and lunged toward the other dog barking, startling the other dog. Next thing I know, the woman's screaming at my dog "NO! BAD DOG!!!! YOU'RE BAD! THAT'S NOT NICE! SHE WAS JUST TRYING TO SAY HI!!!" before laying into me about how my dog needs to be "socialized" because her dog's socialized and is an angel! Not sure what she thinks socialization is but forcing dogs to interact who clearly have no interest is just stupidity! Sadly, my attempts to calmly inform her that she was in the wrong and should have asked before assuming my dog would wanted to "say hi" fell on deaf ears. I'd also like to extend this pet peeve to parents who don't teach their children appropriate behaviour around dogs. It's not uncommon for them to be anxious around children and with good reason since they can be unpredictable and rush toward them limbs flailing, screaming with excitement! My dog's never had any bad experiences with kids but her body language tells me everything I need to know. She's fine with kids she knows but is nervous around kids she doesn't and has a look of panic and stress when they approach. Now I just tell them she's scared of kids so it's best not to pet her which, to my astonishment, has even drawn frowns from some parents as if to say "What do you mean they can't pet your dog? They just want to say hi!" or "why is your dog out in public then?" What is this weird sense of social entitlement some people feel they need to impose upon others? Having said that, I've met some really sweet children (with smart parents), who have asked if it's okay to pet my dog first and I praise those guys and thank them for asking. Thanks so much for all your great training videos Kristin!! I look forward to seeing more!!

hi. i have got my dog in a sticky situation. my dog was bitten as a pup and it traumatized him. scared him for life. so when we walk him to a field to let off leash, frankly he was cooped up all day. he needed a bit of freedom. but the field was full off dogs. we walked him along the brook to play in the water off leash. there was no dogs around at all. suddenly two dogs out of no where off leash approached our dog. he sniffed one but he was nervous. i knew it wouldn't go well but he seemed unitrested because the dog was calm. but the other dog started barking and acting aggressive towards our dog. he started to cower away but held his ground. he wanted to playfully fight the dog because we don't let him near allot of dogs. the dog growled by this time i had to run across the river. it was not pleasant.but we got him off of the woman's dog. the lady was very rude to us saying she was taking her dog to the vet and press charges. her dog was not injured at all and said there was no bite mark but bruising? tbh bruises don't even form within an hour it takes 1-3 day to. dogs cannot form bruises easily as their skin is much thicker than ours. if our dog bit hers there would be a bite mark. she is trying to press charges as i speak this but she cannot as there is nothing to press charges about. she started accusing him as biting her as well when the owners where miles away. we were very saddened when we found a Facebook status accusing our dog of agressiveness. our dog is a Rhodesian Ridgeback and are also bred for protecting. i was surprised loads of people were against us as it was not our fault in that case. she stated her dogs were both on leads which is a lie. i cant believe people sometimes. accusing something that never happened. it has over 200 shares and comments. i just want to clear things up. i can't tolerate people who lie like that. please if you find this status it is incorrect and falsely accused.

100% agreed with this if dogs wants to meet owners should come to a simple agreement and it should be a slow n control environment, matter of fact I just had an encounter with my new neighbor's dog not sure what it was but the doggo was size of a computer tower and it was off leashed and seemed nice but I had a 95lbs german shepherd that was ready to rip n tear that dog apart. had a choke chain on him and immediately turn the other way to avoid gruesome outcome, hopefully neighbor didn't think I was rude not to stop and have a conversation for a bit, I was occupied trying to stop my dog from killing her's.

How do you expect other dogs off leash not to greet your dog? I am very conscious of other owners and will pull my dog out of a bad situation, I hate when other owners are not paying attention to their dogs, not correcting their dogs. I don’t let my dog engage if the dog or owner are not comfortable and I ask them are they comfortable? I don’t mind if a dog approaches, what bothers me is other owners not paying attention when I want them to pull their dog away. I get aggressive, yell back off, or whistle loud, saying hey take control of your dog. I watch the tails, if I see tucked tails I intervene, separate the dogs. When the owner is no where to be found it pisses me off.

He was tied outside because we were going to a nearby field to play and I had gone to get his water bowl and when I returned I saw 5 off leash dogs attacking him. He was tied and helpless and the owner didn't even call his dogs off! It was so ridiculous the owner was just staring and not stepping in to break the fight! I had to go and pry the dogs away from him and I had to use a stick to scare the Dalmatian away because it was so aggressive and refused to let go of my dog. He was rushed to the vet and he had hurt 3 of his paws and there were slashes all over his body. Thankfully he fully recovered without any scars and I managed to modify his fear and aggression towards other dogs after the incident but he doesn't care about other dogs anymore. People should have control over their dogs especially when they are off leash and if they aren't extremely tolerant and friendly towards other dogs.

i have to deal with the same shit every single time i walk my dogs my dogs are not friendly at all but there not barking and showing teeth at everyone and everything only when other people let there dogs come over and 90% of the time there dog is trying to pick a fight with mine. so as usual it escalates in to a fight now i judge whether there dog is trying to really hurt my dog or just trying to dominate either way it wont work so if there dog does not fuck off i will drop the leash and let my boy defend himself and he usually gives them a good fucking hiding, never life threatening but he does the job i think if there dog is off the leash and mine is on the leash and it comes over and tries to fight my dog i have the right to allow my dog to defend itself because i am not going to allow my dog to get injured for no reason by pulling on the leash and restricting his ability to defend himself. so if there dog is wounded that is no longer my fault it is the owners it should be illegal to have a dog off the leash around other peoples dogs.

Some of the comments on here, listen up people, it doesn't matter if the leashed dog is aggressive or not, DON'T LET YOUR UNLEASHED DOG RUN UP TO OTHER DOGS PERIOD! Maybe your dog is friendly, maybe it has never attacked another dog, but... They're DOG'S! Anything can happen with it's next encounter, maybe it liked the first 100 dogs it ran up to, but it didn't like the 101 dog and a fight occurs, put it this way, I'm human, but there's been times when I've met someone and for some reason...... I just don't like them, AT ALL, and my body language shows that I don't want anything to do with them, dogs are the same way except they have zero hesitation to enter conflict, I've had people's unleashed dogs run up to my dog several times and it pissed me off every time, I yelled at the owner "GET YOUR DOG!" they said oh he/she's friendly, THAT'S NOT THE DAMN POINT! Several times these "friendly dogs" attacked my dog and what did the owner say? Duhhhh, uhhhhh, oh boy oh my gosh, he never did that before, bad Mr scruffy, (LAME) Would you like some big muscle bound tattooed guy running up to you because "he's friendly?" How would you react? Ready to fight? Flee? But he's running up saying "I'm friendly", You don't know their intentions and they don't know how you're going to react to them, dogs are more unpredictable than humans, DON'T LET YOUR DOG RUN UP TO OTHER DOGS.... PERIOD!

@@rodsreel you make absolutely zero sense, did i say i have an aggressive dog? I have a puppy and i have had dogs my entire life so i understand their behavior, have you ever been to a dog park and seen a dog fight erupt? Why? Cause dogs react based on all kinds of scenarios and also if the other dog is fixed or not, dogs challenge for breeding rights, territory etcetera. Have you ever walked a dog and a strangers dog ran up and started fighting your dog?

Agree, well said. It's unfortunate that so many dog owners are unaware of dog manners and etiquette, or neglect it. What they don't take into consideration is that other dogs may not want to be approached, may be rescues that are being rehabilitated, older dogs that may be vision impaired and may be startled by dogs rushing up to them, or with arthritis or other painful condition and don't want to be bumped or jumped on, etc. It is frustrating when owners take their dogs off leash when they should be on leash and can't control them. I stopped going to dog parks because of other dogs behaving poorly. However, when leashes must be worn, respecting personal space which applies to dogs too, would avoid many situations.

I had a guy get mad when I pushed his aggressive pit bull away with my foot like I kicked it, which I didn’t. He replied they are just playing. It is so funny to see, that some people searches for the training tips in this video and can't find, bcs the tips don't apply to dogs. Yes these training tips apply to humans. :) Ps: all the good training is based on how WE have to be changed in order to modify our dogs' behavior. :)

Every time I walk my dog this happens 😩 When Roxi is off leash and I spot a dog I will call her back and put her on the leash She is more or less freindly but around small dogs she isn't very good She was attacked as a puppy so this is why she isn't good around most small dogs 🌸

+Kristin Crestejo (Modern Canine Training) this is exactly why I put Roxi on the leash! She is more scared than aggressive! She has also been challenged by another dog while she was off leash and I didn't notice it was there It ran straight up to her and showed very aggressive behaviour towards my dog,she submitted and I put her on leash. It could have been a very bad situation 😬 this dog is also the one known to attack people because the owner has trained it to do so! The dog was a staffy and previously she hadn't been agressive until her owner trained her to be after the male dog died Now this dog was off leash and I saw her a few hours after when taking Roxi out on another walk This very aggressive staffy was being walked by small child (6-8 years old) now I'm 13 and I can handle my dog I look at your videos and they have helped me train my dog I have always put her on a lead when another dog is spotted as I know my dog is not very good with them People just don't get it

First of all no dog is the same. And In my opinion if your dog doesn't get used to playing with toys in an early age it won't feel the urge to play with any. My family has this elderly dog who didn't play in her entire life. (There wasnt any toys for her.......) Sadly No matter how much I encourage her it just won't happen. :/ An idea: If your dog likes food and can be motivated by it then try wrapping rope arround some chicken and maybe it will chase it :D That might be fun.

This happened to me today, I was at the off leash park with my 3 month old gsd and some woman with a a dog that clearly didn't belong off leash at the off leash park yet was there with a dog that was clearly wearing and e collar to be there and that didnt even work for her, it ran an charged my dog from across a huge field TWICE and sent him over, knocking him hard, the wind blown right out of him and yellping. Luckily hes not traumatized yet but that could have been a huge set back for me and she just ever so nonchalantly tried calling her dog back (which surprise it didnt listen)... I was upset but kept to my self and ended up cutting our park time down to just 10 mins then had to leave.. what should I have done otherwise???

Yes! Yes! Yes! Couldn't agree more! I have an off leash reliable dog that doesn't like other dogs so we go to a private field to play. Not a dog park! And we've had this happen to us before. When the guy yelled at me and said that I shouldn't bring my dog there we got into a shouting match. I had my dog called back to me in leash and his dog came up and started reacting to my dog! And my dog doesn't belong there. I think not. Teach your dog to listen before you allow it off leash!

These people make me so mad as a reactive dog owner. My dog LOVES other dogs. She wants to play, but reinforcing her reactivity is undoing weeks of training because someone thinks their dog is special and should be allowed to greet any dog they want. Have they no regard for their own dog's safety? You have NO idea if the other dog is friendly. Don't ever assume that another dog is friendly just because yours is.

I totally agree with you! I love going to the dog park (so does my dog) and it is a strictly off leash park. I have control of my dog....that is why we can go there, but too many people don't and it makes me crazy when people let their dog run up or be right at the gate while we are trying to come in. I have left multiple times because I will not bring my dog into a park when she can't even get inside without all the excitement and dogs being rude (to a dog like mine it is rude....she just doesn't do that). I would never and I mean never let my dog off leash if there are other dogs on leash, you are just asking for trouble. Dogs make mistakes and do stupid and unpredictable things sometimes, you are right....say sorry and learn from your mistake!

i had something similar happen to me at a park where leashes are mandatory for dogs. i had my smaller dog who is socialized with my sister and a large dog that is not well socialized with me. both were on leashes and had harnesses. some guy had his dog off leash and when the dog saw us he ran over to my smaller dog first but she stayed put and they just sniffed each others muzzles then the dog ran over to me and the larger dog and the situation became aggressive. it turned into me going in circles to keep both dogs from getting a bite into the other. in the middle of that and trying to push the other dog, my dog nipped my hand. i had so much adrenaline pumping i didnt know how else to react in that moment. the guy finally ran over after like a minute of trying to call the dog back. he barely managed to apologize. i was so furious because im doing my job to try and keep my dog safe by having her on a harness far away from other people and just letting her enjoy the park but thats interrupted by irresponsible people. im sure i have fault in that as well but your situation reminded me of that time.

All the mansplainers in the comments here 🙄 we have neighbors who let their dogs off leash and our new rescue has reacted badly to their charging us to "say hello" and I just know in their minds our dog is the "bad dog" bc he barked and lunged to warn them to stay away. I think a lot of good would come from dropping the good vs bad dog stuff and acknowledging dog social behaviour is way more than black and white or good and bad

I've had this happen in non-pet friendly stores with my SD. Most recently, I was standing at check out and saw something moving behind me, and turned to see a dog trotting towards us, head down, silent. Nothing about that looked friendly. I turned my boy behind me to protect him, and that made the other dog freeze. Owner didn't call it back and just smiled over from other line, "We just never get to see an actual working dog. She wants to say hello." Uh, no. Lucky dog didn't try to pass me. I've had huge dogs pin mine and there was nothing I could do. Staff is afraid to interfere in stores around here, so I now carry pepper spray.

I think you are right in saying this but just locking up the dogs will make things worse this is how most dogs become agressive they have one bad encounter and there owners stop them from socialising which makes the problem worse. I think if you know your dogs aggresive then it should be your responsibility to muzzle it though you may not want to it prevents dogs getting hurt that only want to say hello.
@gentlebrit
@gentlebrit 7 жыл бұрын
This is my opinion, if you know your dogs are not friendly and your smart enough to know that dogs can run up to your dogs because they may wanna smell and greet your dogs then it's your dog or dogs that should be muzzled, for the safety of other dogs. You are aware your dogs are not friendly so if your dogs were to attack, it's your dogs in the wrong and you could be prosecuted.
@chescarino
@chescarino 5 жыл бұрын
muzzled or not it stresses the dog out and when the other dogs doesn't leave because the owner has no control over, it creates a pretty difficult / negative situation for everyone. these types of interactions are the cause of anxiety and aggression around other dogs and their owners. i didn't let mine off lead until i had a practically flawless recall, for a number of reasons. i've never muzzled my dog and it is constantly off lead, but it has been taught since a puppy, that it doesn't interact with other dogs, their owners and children, without checking in with me first

Actually, you're wrong on the last part. Animal Control, in cities where there are leash laws, say that if your dog is on a leash and another dog runs up to it, off leash and starts a fight, it's the fault of the owner of the loose dog because they failed to keep their dog under control, either by leash or by command.

hi. i have got my dog in a sticky situation. my dog was bitten as a pup and it traumatized him. scared him for life. so when we walk him to a field to let off leash, frankly he was cooped up all day. he needed a bit of freedom. but the field was full off dogs. we walked him along the brook to play in the water off leash. there was no dogs around at all. suddenly two dogs out of no where off leash approached our dog. he sniffed one but he was nervous. i knew it wouldn't go well but he seemed unitrested because the dog was calm. but the other dog started barking and acting aggressive towards our dog. he started to cower away but held his ground. he wanted to playfully fight the dog because we don't let him near allot of dogs. the dog growled by this time i had to run across the river. it was not pleasant.but we got him off of the woman's dog. the lady was very rude to us saying she was taking her dog to the vet and press charges. her dog was not injured at all and said there was no bite mark but bruising? tbh bruises don't even form within an hour it takes 1-3 day to. dogs cannot form bruises easily as their skin is much thicker than ours. if our dog bit hers there would be a bite mark. she is trying to press charges as i speak this but she cannot as there is nothing to press charges about. she started accusing him as biting her as well when the owners where miles away. we were very saddened when we found a Facebook status accusing our dog of agressiveness. our dog is a Rhodesian Ridgeback and are also bred for protecting. i was surprised loads of people were against us as it was not our fault in that case. she stated her dogs were both on leads which is a lie. i cant believe people sometimes. accusing something that never happened. it has over 200 shares and comments. i just want to clear things up. i can't tolerate people who lie like that. please if you find this status it is incorrect and falsely accused.
