The thing that amazes me about this song is that even though the other kids laughed at her, her innate dignity showed through and she didn’t feel ashamed. She knew who she was and what she had going for her, even though she was poor. That confidence and grounding has served her well. She never lost herself.

I played this song for my classes in Appalachia where Dolly is a hero. A lesson here about humility and bullying.

I'm not a weak man but this song makes me tear up every time I hear it. You just don't hear real talent like this anymore.

To me the stronger men are also those who are beyond what others (especially men) may think of seeing them shedding tears. I lived in the countryside, no room for Consumerism, and been bullied so many times in my life... The bullying part on texts, lyrics, films, etc. , always gets me very sensitive. Kind Regards (from Argentina)

you just aren't looking. this is a very lazy statement that, for some reason, everyone thinks is the truth. it's not. open your eyes, explore. good music and talent is everywhere, you just aren't looking for it.

Hey. Tearing up don't make you a weak anybody. Tearing up is honest expression. Tearing up makes you a strong man not weak. Understand

I remember my Mom and Dad listening to this song on the Porter Wagner/ Dolly Parton show. My Mom had this album and even though Jolene was the big song I liked this song so much. Mindfull, I was listening to the Beatles, the Stones and Jimi Hendrix at the time but I also loved her songs! She's timeless and this my all time favorite song of hers.

Dedicated for my Grandma BC this was her raising six kids alone. Her husband suddenly died early with a stroke. Grandma took in laundry, sewing, anything she could to raise her kids during the Great Depression doing honest work as a poor widow that’s a good Mom and Christian would. Her sons joined the service as soon as they got out of HS to help back home. All the kids worked picking cotton for school clothes, shoes, coats. With a lil help from the ppl in town every Che ristmas Eveblate someone left a big bucket of coal on her front porch. Her sister worked in the grocery store n all family helped her. She wrote a poem n left it in her Bible called My Needle of Faith. They moved from a country community to town after his death in order to make it w her large family. Her lil home laundry mat using the wringer washer, hanging clothes to dry in freezing weather in a line upstairs to dry, every piece of clothing exceeded dry cleaners after the war was over type quality. She was the best Mom I’ve ever known. Her funeral was the nest message I’ve heard describing her and the church was full. Her life was over and her heart gave out. Her baby Don lived w her n he had a drinking problem. What a life she lived by faith in God while putting up with her grown baby had to be behind closed doors. Her kids visited every weekend till she died. It didn’t matter what her baby was currently doing in his escapades so she was used to him. She had enlarged heart n rushed via Amb two hrs away n Mom was given permission to ride in the back w her to Hosp. She lived about three days. Her baby tried to climb in the casket n has to be stopped. He knew he had to make it in his own. Things changed fir the better with him. She didn’t get to see all that. It’s sad but true in the 60’s small rural way of life.

My greatgrandmother was a singlemom during the great depression with 3 sons. My great grandfather died at 42. She lived until she was 97 years old, when I was young, she would give me dollar coins and 2 dollar bills from that era. I wish I saved those coins and bills. I was always told how she struggled during that time when single motherhood was very rare.

A woman of strength in herself and her faith , dolly has both. Those are qualities that makes a woman amazing , dangerous, confident, and non-fearful. I always loved this song for the reason it gave me to be just that kind of lady. I may not of had the luck dolly had but I'm just as rich and with no regrets even if I haven't gotten all I thought I would by now. I'm 57 single, raised 1 son alone I graduated high school worked in medical field food area until I retired. I'm proud of my self what I have accomplished and all the scars that have come with it. Although my greatest reward is my son. For he has been a gift to me from God, I became more stable, disciplined, and have learned so much. He has saved my life a couple times just being my son I knew I was worth something cause God sent him to me. He is now 33 never been in trouble or went to jail getting married in two years and lives life as it comes, I look at him now proud he's mine and thank God for him. I may of had those qualities before he was born , he is the one that helped me enhance them to become the mom lady and the person I am today.💯💪⛪☕🧑🍼💐💐

Dolly could tell stories like no one else, my first introduction of her was hearing Dolly and Porter singing if tear drops were pennies, it was on a 45, and at 6 yrs old, I was hooked on her voice......even in my teens i would play records of her found around the house....on an old hifi.....not sure what to think of her now......just not the same. Still sweet and pretty, but just not the same.
