Dolly once said, "when I sang it, I got a little bit of money. When Juice Newton sang it, I was able to open a bank account. When Whitney did it, I was able to buy the bank!" 3 great women putting their best into an amazing song. I loved each version.

Too bad the Colonel wouldn't let Elvis sing it unless she gave up all rights (he wanted to record it). She was disappointed, but a shrewd business woman & always knew the residuals were where the money would be on her original songs. This was her signature song fans know her by & how she used to close her variety show while sitting in a swing. Love this lady & blessed to see her in person! God bless Dolly! ♥😊🦋⚘

I wish you could see the entire clip. She ended up pulling over because it was so different. It took her a bit to get used to it. She maintained the rights to the song and thanked Whitney for breathing new life into the song (not the exact words). The royalties help build her office in an area that was underprivileged or something like that. She gives back a lot. People just don't know about it.

@@laurabooth6752I didn't say she shouldn't make money off of it. I was just offering up an anecdote that i heard & clarifying that she didn't 'give' Whitney the song. She gave her permission to cover it, which is still nice because you have to trust the other artists won't screw it up.

I remember the neighbor kids coming to me to share Whitney Houston’s new song, which was I Will Always Love You and when I heard it I said this is not a new song, I remember this song from when I was a kid, the girls next door insisted that it was a brand new song that was just released but I knew I had heard it before so I looked into it and found that it was Dolly’s and I smiled because I’ve actually met Dolly, my dad used to tour with her and a few other bands before he passed away, everybody called him Watermelon 😂 and he was getting very popular right before he died, I even remember being upset seeing him on TV, I was upset because we (my brother and sister) were left at home with a baby sitter and I wanted my daddy home with me😢
