I am an African American and as a young man, Don Rickles made me laugh when he held up a mirror and showed us all how absurd racism really is. I loved that he could make fun of everyone yet you knew he loved and respected all of us. I cried when he passed away he was my all-time favorite comedian. RIP Mr. Rickles thank you so much for making me laugh during times of racial unrest in the country.

To me, the most striking thing about Don Rickles is the contrast between his act in front of a crowd and his real personality. He was one of the nicest people I've ever met. In contrast, his stage persona was one of the most or THE most abrasive person in show business at that time. It doesn't seem so bad today but in the 1960s it made some people cringe. Oh, and if you heckled him when he was doing stand-up, God help you. You'd regret it. I believe that his greatest talent was empathy. In real life, he was super nice because he had empathy. That same empathy is also what enabled him to identify the most abrasive thing he could get away with saying about you. Same skill used for different purposes. He could see right through you. There's never been anyone like him since.

LORD TWIGO so because people at the time found it funny, it’ll always be funny? Times change. Those black people laughing might have found it offensive, who knows? I don’t find it funny because I think it’s racist, and if you tell that joke to a modern black person, I can guarantee they’ll find it racist too. Attitudes change.
@theguy60375 жыл бұрын
@@hal560 exactly, attitudes changed. We now live in a more sensitive society where people are too sensitive and whine and complain when even the slightest offensive words send people enraged. Don Rickles may have made some race jokes but he allways assured his audience that he had no ill will against anyone. Don was not racist, in fact I believe he was making fun of racism. Most of humanity's humor originally came from things that were horrible. Like for many years people made jokes about Nazis. I understand how feelings changed but frankly I believe they changed for the worst. People are more sensitive to race then ever before. Dosen't racism end when everyone realizes how stupid it was and treat everyone equally? I saw more equality in this roast than anything today. Media today likes to put minorities on a pedestal like they're more special than White people and in return they spit on white people like they did something wrong. I'm white, but I have no Ill will towards anyone because of race, but if I joke about a black person I'm suddenly racist? Something needs to change!
@michaellawrence98395 жыл бұрын
Hal Harris I agree with you. Anybody who Rickles roasted would seemingly laugh out of embarrassment and discomfort. I also agree with you about the racism. This was funny back then because racism was more common and used more loosely. We’ve progressed a lot. Why can’t we progress and say “wait a second, this wasn’t funny and should be left in the past”? Also, insult comedy is such low form of comedy. Wow so you can make fun of people’s imperfections and build some kind of act around it? “Talent”

@purplemonkeydishwasher42416 жыл бұрын
I don't agree at all. Martin was clearly funnier, Lewis's comedy does not age well at all. His comedy was mainly zany antics while Dean was extremely quick witted in sketches, interviews etc.
@purplemonkeydishwasher42416 жыл бұрын
Dean Martin was among the funniest, wittiest comedic personalities in show business, Jerry Lewis was not. Lewis relied on goofy voices and antics which have, Jim Carrey took his own act and improved upon it.
@purplemonkeydishwasher42416 жыл бұрын
I'm being completely honest, Martin is in an entirely different league than Lewis. After they separated you could easily tell that Martin is the naturally funnier person out of the two. Lewis relied heavily on doing outrageous antics, while Martin actually said funny things off the cuff. The Dean Martin Show actually does hold up, it's a sketch show. . . Why wouldn't it hold up? Most of it is just funny, quick witted ad-libbing as opposed to Jerry Lewis doing some high pitched voice and falling down. And Martin wasn't a drunk, that was a part of the act. Everyone who was around him said he had apple juice in his glass and Martin himself said the same thing. And yes the name is from the simpsons teacher strike episode.
@purplemonkeydishwasher42416 жыл бұрын
Dean Martin had the ability to be funny in any situation . . . a sketch, an interview, during a performance, movie . . . it didn't matter. He was effortlessly funny and quick witted. Jerry Lewis was not quick witted and humor came much harder to him. He completely relied on doing outrageous antic to be found funny and many people such as myself do not find him funny regardless of the scenario.

Dean, Don and a great group of stars. These shows are classics, and have kept me laughing for many years
@josephfitzhenry2455 жыл бұрын
Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Ronald Reagan, Milton Berle, Don Rickles, Dean Martin, Neil Armstrong, General of the Army Omar Bradley, Jimmy Stewart, Sugar Ray Robinson, Nipsy Russel, I think that was Ginger Rogers that flashed past, Billy Graham, And was that Tony Orlando? Wow! All in one spot! Today's stars would make this such an expensive and legally complicated process to get them all on the same stage it could never happen. Especially with the same level of talent and class as this group. And nearly everyone of them is gone now. I sure do miss them!

Last only true Hollywood stars. After the 80s all dwindled and faded away. Only living legend and with true star power of Hollywood is Mr. Clint Eastwood.

No words of discription , comments, discussion, or analysis, can define this kind of art. We just sit and enjoy it in awe....today we people saying you cant laugh about that. Thats the real danger!

Unfortunately the country has turned so PC, that if those jokes were said in 2015, they left would be calling for an apology and a boycott of Don Rickles.
@dragonaffliction236 жыл бұрын
Jeff C. Except for the fact that comedy central roasts still exist and the left hasn't demanded any apologies be made. I do seem to recall a lot of upset conservatives after Ann Coulter was roasted.
@annetteduval42896 жыл бұрын
Do not reckon that it would be A liberal. Them conservatives are calling for the firing for everyone in America except those on Fox and friends.

If anyone wanted to be insulted, they would want it to be by him, no one else but him and at the end of it feel truly honored that he chose you! What an incredible comedian; insult but not offend. A true genius! RIP DR
