My top two tips as someone who uploads daily would be: 1. Don't mistake "perfect" as an excuse to finish a video, perfect doesn't exist and it never will so I suppose learning to be able to say when a video is good enough, that's a big skill! 2. Don't spend so much time on music, geeez this one for me is a huge killer!! I would spend so much time on finding the "right" song for a video sometimes half an hour or more! This kills momentum and productivity and it so annoying. I've watched 2 videos of yours and I'm loving them, keep it up Jake! :)

variation on ‘keep rolling’: it’s possible to not have enough footage, it’s hard to end up with too much footage. Film more and film different things than what you planned. 2 things you can do to support this 1. Buy more memory cards and hard drives so you don’t have the worry of running out of space, 2. give yourself enough time to film more and also to try different shots or be spontaneous with picking what to film, even if you don’t end up doing it.

Gosh, Jake - this is such a great video. Anyone who has spent any time making videos and is honest with their own work can point out mistakes for sure. MISTAKE - seeing a great shot and knowing it is incredible and working too fast and lose sight of dialing in the camera. Taking those 3 seconds to see frame rate, speed, and F stop, and if camera is in manual or auto focus. Instead, I have just smashed the record button, only to look at it later and realize that I am not able to even use it. MISTAKE - Rushing out the door before going to record. Low battery on a camera, or going completely out without even checking the memory card slot, only to be in a location and flip on to vlog and suddenly you feel that sinking feeling as your face and neck begin to blush with embarrassment. NO. MEMORY. CARD. I could go on and on Jake... It takes courage to shoot a video like this and I am glad you did. Kudos.

Great tips Jake. One mistake I frequently make is being too focused on getting the right shot, rather than taking a breath in and enjoying the moment, especially with others. It's a balance. This only applies to personal shooting, not client shots for obvious reasons.

You're an inspiration jake...i guess the mistake i used to make is not taking a shot when i definitely should have. I would always think like "i could still stumble through the same stuff in the next times, be it a beautiful sunset, birds in the trees, the rustle of the wind with the bushes...i just have this...this I'll-do-it-next-time manner. And i always end up regretting. Thanks for your words. You're a life changer.

I think if there is one thing that I learned after daily vlogging, it is to plan before hand on paper or at least in your head before you go out to vlog something. This way you can focus so much better on thinking about the detailed shots while shooting the key shots. The minimum would be to decide beforehand, when the video will end. Thanks for sharing your mistakes with us. I learned a lot !

Stopping recording too soon is what gets me more than not. Ugh! I need to work on that. Fantastic video as always. You always tell a great story. So yeah other mistakes I make: when reading from a script I look up or look down too soon which then gives away that I’m using a script and I need to ensure I’m looking at the camera before I start talking and don’t look down at the end for the next line or topic. Makes it a bear to edit and at times something I have to do over.

Great video; so helpful! I think one of the mistakes I often make is overthinking and overdoing my charisma on camera. I forget that I don’t need to imitate the most animated vloggers out there, especially if it takes me too far away from my own personality. My reminder is to be just sincere and authentic enough to connect with your audience. They don't want your best impression of Logan Paul, they want you. This is something I appreciate about you, Jake. You’re not overly charismatic, honestly you’re pretty mellow but it’s evident that is your genuine personality and so it’s easy to connect with you.

Hi Jake! I really needed to watch this video! THANK YOU! :) As a small photography channel, I really want to do deliver knowledge with sick filming! I want to use a combination of both. However, as I'm still learning and I live alone (no creative friends either), it seems super hard to record myself. I would love more movement and cool b-roll of my London photoshoots, travels, vlogs etc. Seeing that you record yourself in many videos, it really encourages me. And the last thing you mentioned about the impostor syndrome.... well, u touched a good one there! I have been the whole week so demotivated comparing myself with big filmmakers. There is a very thin line between consuming content for inspiration and feeling totally discouraged... I love your channel! looking forward to seeing your next video! :)

Thanks for another great video. When I decided to start a KZbin Channel, I learned that posting at least twice a week on a specific schedule was really important in order to build a channel and subscribers. It's been challenging, but I think it's been really good for me. If I didn't have that self-imposed schedule I think I would spend a month on each video trying to get it "perfect". Instead, I get it done and try to make each video just a little better than the last. I'm trying to learn one new thing in each video.
@jaminlevan4 жыл бұрын
Hit the nail on the head. I think the biggest one I can personally reflect on is turning off that darn recording button too soon. Whether it is weddings that I am filming or just daily videos most times I just wish I would have another few seconds of that clip to be able to transition properly and make everything flow!
@SteveCoutts4 жыл бұрын
Great advice Jake! I think your last tip resonated with me the most. I kind of chuckled because I can be the absolute worst at over thinking and over complicating things to the point that I'm just paralyzed. To break out of it I typically just force myself to start shooting or start writing. Something, anything, just to break the paralysis. Even if I toss it out, at least it got me moving. I think one tip I would add is to not worry about perfection. It's pointless. I don't how many times I have thrown away or redone great shots because they were slightly out of focus or whatever. So much time and effort wasted chasing an impossible standard. Cheers!

This whole video is absolutely spot on!! 👏 I was literally practicing some editing and was thinking... why did I not getting a static shot of these waves, why am I not utilising a tripod and letting the waves actually be the prime subject of this shot. But learning by failure is a method we are often afraid to do.

Great advice, we struggle with a few of these as well. One other struggle that we sometimes deal with is dialogue in video. Using the right words to get a point across while at the same time not detaching the viewer from the video. Some people, like yourself seem to do a good job at that but its a learning curve for a lot of content creators out there.
